Gemini in Chrome can read the page in the active tab when a new chat opens, because that tab is shared by default. You can add selected tabs—up to 10 recent open tabs across browser windows—but Gemini does not have documented, unrestricted access to every tab or to your entire screen. Shared tabs send their full page content, media, and URL to Google. A shared Google Workspace page is a special case: Google says Gemini may access the Workspace account to refer to the whole document, including material not currently loaded in the tab.

The privacy answer in one minute

  • Current tab: In Gemini in Chrome, the current tab is included when a new chat starts unless you remove it or change the default setting.
  • Other tabs: You choose additional tabs to share. Chrome Help documents a limit of up to 10 recent open tabs across browser windows.
  • Data sent: Chromium’s interface disclosure says a shared tab’s full content, media and URL are sent to Google.
  • Workspace exception: When the shared page is a Workspace page such as a Google Doc, Google says Gemini may access the Workspace account and refer to the complete document.
  • Not a whole-screen monitor: The documented design is scoped to the current tab and tabs you select. It does not say that Gemini continuously watches every tab, window or display.

These are product behaviors, not a promise that every account, page type or device has identical controls. Google’s labels and availability can change, so check the sharing indicator and the settings shown in your version of Chrome before discussing sensitive material.

How Gemini in Chrome gets tab information

The active tab is the starting point

When you open Gemini in Chrome and begin a new chat, Chrome Help says the current tab is shared by default. Gemini can then use that page as context for requests such as summarizing an article, explaining a diagram or extracting dates from a page. The default concerns the tab that is active at the moment the chat starts; it is not a declaration that every tab in the browser has been collected.

You can remove the current tab from the chat’s shared-tab list. The exact control is exposed in Gemini in Chrome through Show shared tabs, where the tabs contributing context are listed and can be removed.

Additional tabs are an explicit selection

If an answer requires more than one page, you can add other open tabs. Google Chrome Help describes sharing up to 10 recent open tabs across browser windows. “Recent” and the available tab picker are product terms, so the list may not include every tab that has been open for a long time. Only the tabs you select are added to that chat’s shared context.

Adding a tab is different from granting Gemini a permanent view of your browser. The practical check is the shared-tab list: if a tab is not shown there, it has not been selected through this control for the conversation.

What a shared tab contains

Chromium’s user-interface disclosure is unusually specific: “When you choose to share the current tab with Gemini, the tab’s full content, media and URL are sent to Google.” In other words, sharing is broader than copying the visible paragraph into a prompt. Page text, images or other media represented by the page, and the page address are covered by the disclosure.

The notice does not establish that Google receives every piece of browser state. It describes the content, media and URL of the tab you choose to share. Do not treat it as a guarantee about retention periods, training use or review frequency; those are separate policy questions that the notice itself does not answer.

What Gemini can see in common situations

An ordinary webpage

For a normal article, product page or web application, Gemini can use the shared page as context. Asking “What are the three requirements on this page?” gives it a reason to inspect the page content supplied with the tab. Media on the page can also fall within the shared-tab disclosure, so a page’s images, video or other embedded media should be treated as part of what is sent when sharing is enabled.

Several research tabs

You can deliberately share a small set of pages—for example, three policy pages and a spreadsheet viewer—and ask Gemini to compare them. The comparison is limited to the tabs selected in the picker and the information Gemini can process from those pages. Opening another tab does not, by itself, add it to the conversation.

A Google Workspace page

Google documents a broader behavior for a shared Workspace page such as Google Docs. Gemini may directly access the Workspace account to refer to the whole document, including content beyond what is currently loaded in the tab. That means a long document, collapsed section or material below the portion you can see may still be relevant after you share the page.

Because this exception involves account access, treat a shared document differently from a public webpage. Confirm that the signed-in Workspace account is the one you intend to use and avoid sharing a document merely to test a question.

Questions about the page itself

Gemini can answer questions using the shared context, but it can still misunderstand a page, miss content that requires an interaction, or produce an incorrect interpretation. Sharing gives the assistant data; it does not make its answer authoritative or guarantee that every dynamic element was available in the same form you see.

What Gemini in Chrome is not documented to see

  • Every open tab automatically: The documented workflow is the current tab plus additional tabs you select, with a limit of up to 10 recent tabs.
  • Your entire display: Tab sharing is not described as continuous screen sharing. A different window, desktop or application is outside the stated tab scope unless you provide its content another way.
  • A live feed of browser activity: The available documentation does not say that Gemini watches tab switches or continuously records what you do after a chat begins.
  • Unspecified private data: The reviewed product material does not establish precise rules for passwords, hidden page elements, extension panels, private-browsing tabs or other browser internals. Do not infer a categorical “yes” or “no” for those cases from the tab-sharing description alone.

The safest operational rule is narrower: assume that anything included in a tab you share—including its media and URL—can be sent to Google, and assume nothing about tabs or screens that you have not shared.

How to check and stop tab sharing

Remove a tab from the current chat

  1. Open Gemini in Chrome and look for the shared-tab indicator or the control labeled Show shared tabs.
  2. Review every tab listed there, including tabs from another browser window.
  3. Remove any tab that should not provide context.
  4. Start your question only after the list matches the pages you intend to share.

Use this check before asking about confidential mail, customer records, financial dashboards or internal documents. Removing a tab prevents it from remaining in the shared-tab list for that chat; it does not undo information already sent in an earlier exchange.

Stop automatic sharing of the active tab

  1. Open Chrome Settings.
  2. Go to AI innovations → Gemini in Chrome.
  3. Turn off Share current tab by default.
  4. In a later chat, verify the visible sharing indicator before sending a question.

Turning off this default changes what happens when a new chat starts. It does not necessarily remove the ability to share a tab manually. If the setting or wording differs on your device, use the controls currently displayed in Chrome rather than relying on an older screenshot or guide.

Use a pre-send privacy check

  • Read the page title and URL shown in the shared-tab list.
  • Look for a second window containing a sensitive tab that may have been selected accidentally.
  • For a Workspace page, confirm the account and document identity.
  • Ask whether the answer really needs page context; if not, open a chat without sharing that page.

Workspace documents require extra caution

For an ordinary webpage, the stated input is the shared tab’s content, media and URL. A Workspace page can trigger a different path: Google says Gemini may access the Workspace account to refer to the whole document. That can include text outside the currently visible viewport and material that has not yet been loaded into the tab.

This does not mean Gemini can browse every file in the account simply because Chrome is signed in. The documented condition is a shared Workspace page, and the stated purpose is to refer to that document. Nevertheless, the account-access possibility makes the permission more consequential than sharing a public article. Share only the specific document needed, then remove it from Show shared tabs when finished.

Gemini in Chrome versus the Gemini web app

Capability Gemini in Chrome Gemini web app
Uses the current Chrome tab as context Documented; the current tab is shared by default when a new chat starts. Google describes the web app as a separate experience and does not provide the same page-content sharing feature.
Adds other open tabs Yes, through the shared-tab picker, up to 10 recent open tabs across browser windows. Not the same Chrome tab-sharing workflow.
Live mode in the browser Advertised as part of Gemini in Chrome experiences where available. Google says the web app does not provide the same Live mode.
Workspace-page behavior A shared Workspace page may permit direct account access to reference the whole document. Do not assume the Chrome sharing behavior applies when you simply visit the web app.

Visiting Gemini’s website in a Chrome window does not automatically turn it into Gemini in Chrome. The in-browser feature has its own entry point, sharing indicator and settings.

Availability, accounts and device differences

Google’s product information says Gemini in Chrome requires a signed-in, eligible account and a supported location. Availability can vary by age, account type, country and rollout stage. The Chrome Help instructions cited for tab sharing are desktop instructions; Google also describes mobile experiences, but Android and iOS may use different screens, limits or controls. Do not assume that a desktop setting appears identically on a phone.

The current product FAQ states that Auto Browse is available to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the United States. That eligibility statement is volatile, so verify the current Google product page and the account’s own feature panel before treating Auto Browse as available. Auto Browse eligibility is separate from the basic question of what a shared tab sends.

What the privacy notices say about human review

Chromium’s interface includes a second disclosure: “Conversations about shared tabs may be seen by human reviewers to improve Gemini.” This is a direct product notice, not a statement that a reviewer will read every conversation. It does establish that human review is a possible use for conversations about shared tabs.

The notice does not specify a review rate, retention period or the exact deletion process. Those details should not be guessed from the tab-sharing control. If a page contains information that must not be exposed to a potential reviewer, do not share that page with Gemini in Chrome.

Practical examples

Summarizing one article

Open the article, check that only its tab appears under Show shared tabs, and ask for a summary. The page’s content, media and URL are within the disclosure, so avoid including confidential material in the same tab.

Comparing several sources

Select only the sources needed, staying within the 10-tab limit. Before asking for a comparison, remove unrelated tabs such as a private account page or an internal dashboard. The resulting answer is based on the selected pages, not on every tab you happen to have open.

Finding a clause in a long document

Share the Workspace document and specify the clause or section. Because Google says the assistant may access the whole document, check that the file and signed-in account are correct. Remove the document afterward if it should no longer be available as chat context.

Common mistakes and fixes

  • Mistake: assuming a tab switch is automatically shared. Fix: inspect Show shared tabs and add or remove tabs deliberately.
  • Mistake: disabling the default and assuming all sharing is impossible. Fix: understand that Share current tab by default controls automatic inclusion; manual sharing may remain available.
  • Mistake: treating the visible viewport as the whole data boundary. Fix: remember the full-content, media and URL disclosure, and the broader Workspace-document exception.
  • Mistake: confusing the web app with Gemini in Chrome. Fix: identify which product you opened and use the controls belonging to that product.
  • Mistake: relying on an old menu name. Fix: confirm the current Chrome settings path and sharing indicator on the device and account you are using.

A safe decision rule

Before you ask Gemini in Chrome about a page, decide whether you are comfortable sending that tab’s full content, media and URL to Google and with the possibility that a shared-tab conversation may be seen by human reviewers for improvement. If the answer is no, do not share the tab. If the answer is yes, select only the necessary tabs, check the indicator, and treat Workspace pages as a higher-scope case because the whole document may be referenced.
