Short answer: Gemini in Chrome normally receives the content of the tab you are viewing when you open it. It does not automatically read every open tab. You can add other tabs (Google documents a maximum of 10), remove shared tabs, or turn off default tab sharing. Supported computers can also attach a region you select on the screen.

There are important exceptions. A shared Google Workspace page may let Gemini refer to more of the Workspace account, such as an entire Google Doc. Auto browse is a separate, broader mode that can visit websites, interact with them, and potentially share your information with those sites. Location, microphone, connected-app, and account controls further change what information is available.

What Gemini in Chrome can access at a glance

Access mode Information Gemini can use How it is controlled
Ordinary chat Content from the current tab when Gemini opens Remove the shared tab or change the default-sharing setting
Added tabs Other open tabs that you deliberately share, up to 10 Use the shared-tab controls to add or remove tabs
Screen selection A region you draw around on a webpage Available on eligible Chromebook Plus, Mac, and Windows computers in supported countries for users aged 13 or older
Shared Workspace page The page and, in some cases, additional Workspace account content such as an entire Doc Sharing a Workspace page and the account’s permissions determine access
Auto browse Websites Gemini visits and interacts with to complete a task; it may use connected-app information Review the plan, confirm sensitive actions, stop or take over the task
Public Google services Public information from Search, Maps, YouTube, and Google Travel Service-specific activity and permission settings apply

These modes should not be treated as one universal screen-reading capability. Google’s documentation describes specific sources and permissions rather than unrestricted access to every pixel, website, account, or open tab.

Ordinary chat: the current tab is shared by default

Google Chrome Help states: “When you open Gemini in Chrome, the page content from your current tab is shared by default.” That context lets Gemini summarize an article, answer questions about a product page, or compare information visible in the page. The shared-tab indicator in the interface shows that the tab is part of the conversation.

A new chat follows the same default unless you change the sharing preference. If a page contains private text, account details, an internal dashboard, or a document you did not intend to disclose, check the indicator before asking a question.

How to stop sharing a tab

  1. Open Gemini in Chrome while the tab is active.
  2. Look for the shared-tab chip or indicator in the Gemini interface.
  3. Open that control and remove the tab you do not want included.
  4. Start the prompt only after the unwanted tab no longer appears among the shared sources.

Removing a tab prevents its page content from being shared through that tab-sharing control. It does not erase information that you separately pasted into a chat or supplied through another permission.

How additional tabs work

You can deliberately add other open tabs when you need Gemini to consolidate information across pages. Google documents sharing up to 10 open tabs. The interface identifies which tabs are shared, and you can remove individual tabs later. This is different from saying that all tabs are automatically sent: the documented behavior is the current tab by default plus tabs you select.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google also describes tabs opened from a chat or from a shared tab as part of the relevant browsing context. Check the shared-tab list rather than assuming a newly opened page is either always included or always excluded.

Changing the default-sharing preference

Chrome’s Gemini settings include a control for sharing the current tab by default. Turning that preference off means a new chat will not automatically attach the current page through that setting. You can still share a tab intentionally when a prompt requires page context, so verify the indicator each time.

Selecting only part of a webpage

On supported Chromebook Plus, Mac, and Windows computers in supported countries, users aged 13 or older can choose Select from screen. Draw around the relevant region of a webpage and the selected content is attached to the prompt. This is useful for one table, a chart, a paragraph, or a particular image when the rest of the page is irrelevant.

Screen selection narrows the material you submit; it does not establish that Gemini can inspect every other pixel on your display. Eligibility is separate from other Gemini in Chrome entry points, and country, device, account, and rollout conditions can change. If the option is missing, use ordinary tab sharing or check whether your device and region are supported.

What changes on a Google Workspace page

Sharing a Workspace webpage has a documented exception. Gemini may directly access the Workspace account so it can answer about content beyond what is available in the visible tab—for example, an entire Google Doc rather than only the portion currently rendered.

This does not mean that every webpage exposes an entire Google account. The exception is tied to a shared Workspace page, the connected account, and the permissions available to that account. Availability also differs among Workspace apps. Treat a shared Doc, Sheet, or other Workspace page as potentially broader than an ordinary public webpage, and avoid sharing it unless that level of access is appropriate.

Auto browse is a separate, action-taking mode

Auto browse changes the access model from answering about submitted page context to carrying out a multi-step web task. Gemini can choose sites relevant to the request, navigate between pages, click controls, fill forms, and interact with websites. It can use personal information, including information from Connected Apps, to complete a task more accurately.

When completing an auto-browse task, Gemini may share your information with the destination site. That can include information needed to complete the request and details supplied through connected services. A site where you are already signed in can therefore receive information in the normal course of the interaction.

Reviewing and interrupting an auto-browse task

  1. Describe the outcome you want, such as finding an appointment or comparing travel options.
  2. Review Gemini’s proposed plan before it starts browsing.
  3. Confirm the task only when the sites, steps, and information involved are acceptable.
  4. Watch the activity and use the stop or take-over control if the task goes in an unexpected direction.

Google describes additional review or confirmation before actions such as sending communications, changing data, submitting forms, scheduling events, or visiting highly sensitive financial or health sites. Password Manager assistance requires a separate permission step before it helps sign in. Gemini can misunderstand a request or a website, so a plan review is not a substitute for checking the final result.

Where auto browse is unavailable

Google’s user guidance says auto browse is not available in Incognito, Live chats, or Gemini in Chrome on iPhone and iPad. The feature is also rolling out gradually, so an eligible account may not have it yet.

Other information Gemini in Chrome can use

Public Google service information

Google says Gemini in Chrome can automatically use public information from Google Search, Google Maps, YouTube, and Google Travel, including flight and hotel searches. Public Search information can be used even when Keep Activity is off. For public Maps and YouTube information, Keep Activity must be on. These are service-level sources, not proof that Gemini can read private content in every account.

Location

Chrome provides a precise-location control for Gemini. If it is off, Google says Gemini cannot access and use your precise location and can only derive an estimated location from your IP address. Turning off precise location therefore reduces precision; it does not make all location inference impossible.

Microphone

Microphone access is controlled separately from tab sharing and location. If you use voice input, check the microphone permission and the eligibility requirements for your device and account. A microphone permission does not itself grant access to every tab or screen region.

Connected apps

Some Workspace and other connected apps can supply information when you enable them, but availability differs by app. Connected-app access is distinct from the page currently shared in Chrome and is especially relevant to auto browse, which may use that information while visiting a site.

What Gemini in Chrome cannot access—or what Google has not established

  • Ordinary chat is not documented as automatically sharing every open tab. The stated model is the current tab by default and up to 10 additional tabs selected by you.
  • Removing a shared tab or disabling default sharing stops that tab from being supplied through the tab-sharing control. It does not revoke information you already provided elsewhere.
  • Screen selection does not prove unrestricted access to the rest of your display.
  • A regular shared webpage does not automatically expose every account associated with the site. The broader account example is specifically documented for shared Workspace pages.
  • Turning off precise location blocks precise-location access through that permission, but an IP-derived estimate may remain available.
  • The ordinary chat documentation does not establish access to every website, every account, or every pixel of a screen.

These boundaries are more useful than assuming that Gemini either sees nothing or sees everything. Identify the exact source attached to the prompt and the permissions active at that moment.

Availability depends on device, account, and rollout

Gemini in Chrome features can vary by age, device, country or region, language, Chrome version, sign-in status, Incognito mode, account type, administrator settings, and gradual rollout. Screen selection has its own Chromebook Plus, Mac, Windows, country, and age requirements. Auto browse has separate exclusions and may not yet be enabled for every account.

A managed Workspace account can also be governed by administrator policies that differ from a personal Google account. Do not assume that a control visible in one profile will appear in another, even on the same computer.

Privacy checklist before asking Gemini about a page

  1. Inspect the shared-tab indicator. Remove tabs containing secrets, personal records, or unrelated work.
  2. Check the default-sharing setting. Turn it off if you want to attach pages only on an intentional, per-chat basis.
  3. Use screen selection for narrow questions. Select only the table, paragraph, or region needed when the feature is available.
  4. Treat Workspace pages as potentially broader. Confirm which account is connected before sharing a Doc or other Workspace content.
  5. Review connected apps. Disable connections you do not need, particularly before using auto browse.
  6. Read the auto-browse plan. Confirm the destination sites and information involved, then monitor the task and take over when necessary.
  7. Review location and microphone permissions. Remember that disabling precise location still permits an IP-based estimate.
  8. Check account-specific terms. Personal and managed Workspace accounts do not necessarily receive the same data-handling protections.

Personal accounts and managed Workspace accounts are not interchangeable

Google administrator documentation for its managed Workspace service says administrators can allow Gemini to use prompts and current-tab context with user consent, and states that those prompts, context, and responses are not used to train generative AI models under the described managed-service terms. That statement is scoped to the managed Workspace environment; it should not be applied automatically to consumer accounts.

For a personal account, consult Google’s current Gemini Apps Privacy Hub and the terms that apply to that account. Retention, processing, human review, and connected-service handling can depend on the account and the feature, and the Chrome sharing controls alone do not answer every privacy question.
