Gemini on a Pixel Watch is a voice-controlled assistant for quick watch tasks, workout controls, live health readouts, timers, alarms and selected settings. Google documents starting, pausing, resuming and ending activities; asking for current heart rate or step count; and, on Pixel Watch 5, performing a small set of actions without an internet connection. It is not a medical adviser, and it does not turn every Pixel Watch into a fully independent phone.
What works depends on the watch generation, Wear OS and Gemini versions, paired-phone setup, Google Account type, language, region and connectivity. The instructions below describe the capabilities Google currently documents, and actual availability depends on those requirements.
What Gemini is on Pixel Watch
Gemini is Google’s digital assistant on supported Wear OS watches. On a Pixel Watch, it is designed for short spoken requests that are practical while your phone is in a pocket or you are exercising. You can ask it to control an activity, read a current metric, set a timer or perform another supported watch action.

Google’s general Wear OS guidance says Gemini is available on select watches running Wear OS 4.0 or later. That does not mean every watch with Wear OS 4 has every Gemini function. Offline Gemini is a separate capability limited to Pixel Watch 5, and Raise to talk has its own Pixel Watch 4 and 5 requirements.

How to start Gemini
Before trying any launch method, set Gemini as the digital assistant on the connected phone, sign in with a personal Google Account, use a supported language and region, and update the watch’s apps. Google lists several ways to open Gemini:
Hold the button above the crown
Press and hold the physical button above the crown. This is the most direct method when you do not want to use a hotword or change the watch face.
Say “Hey Google”
With the watch screen active, say “Hey Google,” then wait for the listening state and speak your request. The hotword method depends on the watch being awake and on the relevant voice-assistant settings.
Tap the Gemini complication
Add the Gemini complication to a compatible watch face and tap it whenever you want to speak. The complication is useful if you prefer a visible on-screen control instead of a button press.
Use the Gemini tile
Google’s help instructions also describe a Gemini tile. Add the tile to the watch’s tile carousel, then choose a recommended action or configure a custom action where available. Tiles are suited to repeatable tasks because they reduce the number of spoken words needed.
Raise to talk on eligible models
Pixel Watch 4 and Pixel Watch 5 can use Raise to talk when all of its requirements are met. Raise the watch toward your mouth; a visual indicator shows when it is ready to listen. This is not a general feature of every Pixel Watch, and it is stricter than the ordinary button, hotword or complication methods.

Tasks Gemini can perform while you are online
Control a workout
Google documents voice commands to start, pause, resume and end an activity. Natural examples include “start my run” and requests to stop or continue the activity already in progress. The command controls the workout session; it is not a promise that Gemini can configure every sport-specific option or replace the watch’s normal workout controls.
Read current health metrics
You can ask “What’s my heart rate?” or “What’s my step count?” for current values from Google Health. These are live or current watch readings, not a clinical assessment. Google’s documentation does not establish that Gemini diagnoses a condition, interprets symptoms, evaluates training readiness or substitutes for medical advice.
Set timers and alarms
A request such as “Set a timer for 15 minutes” is an example in Google’s documentation. Timers and alarms are also among the basic actions supported by Offline Gemini on Pixel Watch 5, subject to the offline requirements described below.
Perform other supported assistant actions
Depending on the watch, software and connection, Gemini can handle assistant requests that the watch and its installed apps expose. Availability is conditional: an action may require the paired phone, an LTE connection, a particular language or a supported account. If a request fails, try the same task through the watch’s standard app or controls rather than assuming the watch is defective.
Offline Gemini: what Pixel Watch 5 adds
Google identifies Pixel Watch 5 as the only Pixel Watch with Offline Gemini in the documented feature set. The watch must have Google Gemini on Wear OS version 1.36 or later. Offline mode is intended for basic device operations, not the full range of cloud-backed questions and answers.
For the offline scenario described by Google, enable Airplane Mode and make sure Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are off. Those settings prevent the watch from quietly using a network while you test an offline command.
Rank #3
- The Google Pixel Watch 3 is designed for performance, with advanced fitness from Fitbit[1,2]; the 45mm screen is twice as bright and 40% larger than before, making it easier to see your stats and info[1]
- Maximize your performance with advanced running features; build custom run workouts and get real-time guidance and advanced form tracking[3]
- Enhance your run routine with Fitbit Premium; Google AI uses your goals, past runs, and readiness to power personalized run recommendations[3]
- Know what your body is ready for each day with readiness; it uses sleep, resting heart rate, and heart rate variability to show if you’re ready to take on a workout or prioritize recovery[3]
- Cardio load measures how hard your heart works so you can see how hard you’ve pushed; compare trends to see if you’re under- or over-training[3]
Examples of documented offline actions
- Set timers and alarms.
- Toggle Water Lock or Wi-Fi.
- Open apps such as Keep Notes or Maps.
- Turn on the flashlight.
- Start a run.
- Skip a song or change the volume.
Google cautions that results can vary and recommends checking responses for accuracy. Offline Gemini should therefore be treated as a constrained command layer. It is not evidence that the watch can answer arbitrary factual questions, perform cloud searches, send every kind of message or provide the same capabilities as online Gemini.
Raise to talk: requirements and situations where it may not work
Raise to talk requires all of the following conditions in Google’s documentation:
- A Pixel Watch 4 or Pixel Watch 5.
- Wear OS 6 or newer on the watch.
- A compatible Google Pixel phone paired with the watch.
- Gemini enabled as the phone’s default assistant.
- The watch held close to your mouth while you raise it.
After the visual readiness indicator appears, speak normally. Raise to talk may not trigger when the watch is off your wrist or locked, in Bedtime or Theatre mode, during a phone call, when another function is using the microphone, or shortly after fall detection. In those cases, use the button, an active-screen hotword or the complication instead, provided the ordinary assistant prerequisites are satisfied.

| Capability | Documented requirement | What that means |
|---|---|---|
| Gemini generally | Select watches running Wear OS 4.0 or later; Google Account; internet through the paired phone or an LTE provider | Gemini is not guaranteed on every Wear OS watch, and some functions can be unavailable on LTE. |
| Offline Gemini | Pixel Watch 5; Google Gemini on Wear OS 1.36 or later | Basic commands can work with Airplane Mode on and Wi-Fi and Bluetooth off. |
| Raise to talk | Pixel Watch 4 or 5; Wear OS 6 or later; compatible Pixel phone with Gemini as default assistant | The watch must be raised close to your mouth and show the ready indicator. |
| Pixel Watch Gemini account | Personal Google Account | Google’s Pixel Watch Gemini instructions do not support work or school accounts for this setup. |
| Google Assistant fallback | Select watches running Wear OS 3.0 or later | A watch may support Google Assistant even when it does not meet the documented Gemini requirements. |
This is not a complete model-by-model compatibility matrix. Google’s public guidance does not establish that every individual Pixel Watch generation supports every Gemini feature, so do not infer offline or Raise to talk support from the watch name alone.
Set up Gemini on a Pixel Watch
- Check the watch software. Open the watch’s settings and install available system updates. For Offline Gemini, verify that Google Gemini on Wear OS is version 1.36 or later; for Raise to talk, the watch must be on Wear OS 6 or newer.
- Update watch apps. Use the phone’s watch-management app and the watch’s app store to update Gemini and other Google components. Google specifically directs Pixel Watch users to keep watch apps current.
- Confirm the account. Pair the watch with the phone using a personal Google Account. A work or school account does not meet the Pixel Watch Gemini instruction.
- Make Gemini the phone assistant. In the connected phone’s assistant settings, select Gemini as the default digital assistant. This is required for Pixel Watch Gemini and for Raise to talk.
- Check language and region. Gemini availability varies by country and language. If the option is absent, verify that both the phone and watch use a supported combination before changing other settings.
- Add a launch control. Choose the button, active-screen “Hey Google,” Gemini complication or Gemini tile. On Pixel Watch 4 or 5, enable Raise to talk if the watch and phone satisfy its requirements.
- Test a documented command. Try “What’s my heart rate?”, “What’s my step count?” or “Set a timer for 15 minutes.” These examples test the assistant without relying on an unsupported custom workflow.
Connectivity, LTE and account limits
Online Gemini normally needs internet access through the paired phone or an LTE provider. Google warns that some features may be unavailable when the watch is using LTE, even if the watch shows a cellular connection. A connection can also be affected by airplane mode, Bluetooth or Wi-Fi settings, phone distance and carrier support.
Language and region are separate gates from hardware. A supported watch can still lack Gemini or a particular action if Google has not enabled it for the selected language, country or account type. Availability can also change as Google updates the watch app and server-side services.

What Gemini cannot reliably do on a Pixel Watch
It cannot provide a universal offline assistant
Only Pixel Watch 5 is documented for Offline Gemini, and the offline action list is deliberately basic. Older Pixel Watch models should not be assumed to gain offline Gemini merely because they can run another assistant or receive a software update.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIt is not a medical interpretation tool
Heart-rate and step-count requests return watch data. The documented capability does not include diagnosis, emergency assessment, treatment recommendations or professional interpretation. For a concerning reading or symptom, use appropriate medical care rather than asking Gemini to decide what it means.
It does not bypass hardware and mode restrictions
Raise to talk cannot listen when its documented blocking conditions apply, and Gemini cannot control a feature that the watch, installed app, account or current connection does not expose. A spoken request is not a guarantee that an action will complete.
It does not make every model equivalent
Google’s support pages describe requirements by feature rather than publishing a complete matrix for every Pixel Watch generation. Treat “Pixel Watch” as a family name, then verify the exact model and Wear OS version before relying on a feature.
Troubleshoot a failed Gemini request
Gemini does not appear on the watch
- Confirm that the watch is a supported model with Wear OS 4 or later.
- Update the watch and Gemini apps.
- Check that Gemini, rather than another assistant, is selected on the connected phone.
- Sign in with a personal Google Account and verify the language and region.
The watch says it is offline
- For ordinary online Gemini, restore the phone connection or an eligible LTE connection.
- For Offline Gemini, confirm that the watch is Pixel Watch 5, Gemini on Wear OS is version 1.36 or later, Airplane Mode is on, and Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are off.
- Use only a basic offline action such as a timer, alarm, flashlight or workout start; cloud-dependent questions may fail.
Raise to talk does nothing
- Verify Pixel Watch 4 or 5, Wear OS 6 or later and a compatible Pixel phone.
- Make Gemini the phone’s default assistant.
- Raise the watch close to your mouth and wait for the visual readiness signal.
- Unlock the watch, leave Bedtime or Theatre mode, end a phone call and wait if fall detection has just activated.
- Try the button or complication to distinguish a Raise to talk restriction from a broader Gemini problem.
A health answer looks wrong
Check the reading in the watch’s health or activity app and make sure the watch is being worn correctly. Gemini reports the available watch data; it does not independently validate the sensor measurement.

Useful requests to try first
- “Start my run.”
- “Pause my workout.”
- “Resume my activity.”
- “End my workout.”
- “What’s my heart rate?”
- “What’s my step count?”
- “Set a timer for 15 minutes.”
These phrases mirror Google’s documented examples and keep the request within capabilities explicitly described for Pixel Watch Gemini. If one fails, shorten the command, check connectivity and try the watch’s native control.
