Official material about Gears of War: E-Day establishes that Marcus Fenix and Dominic “Dom” Santiago were already best friends before the Locust invasion, with their connection running through Dom’s older brother, Carlos. It does not identify or explicitly debunk the “20-year-old fan theory” in the supplied headline, so that claim cannot be confirmed from the available official sources.
What the official E-Day material says about Marcus and Dom
In a 2024 Xbox Wire interview, The Coalition described E-Day as the origin story of Marcus and Dom’s bond. The studio said they were best friends and connected through Dom’s older brother Carlos, who died on the battlefield with Marcus. The interview places the two characters in the early stages of forming a kinship shaped by that shared loss. Xbox Wire’s interview with The Coalition gives the relationship context, but does not name a fan theory or say that the game disproves one.

Matt Searcy, The Coalition’s studio creative director, described the game this way: “We’re telling the origin story of Marcus and Dom and their bond… this is the bond that defines the franchise,” Searcy adds. That is a statement about the story’s focus, not confirmation of an unspecified theory.

The available official interview and game information do not identify which theory the headline means. Without the theory’s exact claim and a source addressing it, readers cannot determine whether E-Day contradicts it, supports it, or simply adds relevant backstory. The responsible conclusion is narrower: official material clarifies Marcus and Dom’s prior connection, but does not establish that a particular fan theory has been debunked.
