Arc System Works is a Japanese developer and publisher best known for the Guilty Gear and BlazBlue fighting series. Its catalog is considerably broader, covering competitive fighters, belt-scrolling brawlers, action games, role-playing games, puzzle adventures, strategy titles, visual novels and licensed projects across console, PC, mobile and Game Pass.

If you know the company only for Guilty Gear -Strive-, that game is its current flagship, but it is one part of a catalog that also includes River City, Kunio-kun, Double Dragon, Under Night In-Birth, DNF Duel, Bubble Bobble: Sugar Dungeons, Code Shifter and newer original releases.

Arc System Works games at a glance

Arc System Works describes itself as a Japanese developer and fighting-game specialist. The company’s public catalog shows two overlapping identities: a creator of technically ambitious 2D and 2.5D fighters, and a publisher or developer with a long-running interest in arcade action, licensed games and experimental smaller projects.

  • The play feel has been revamped from previous games; It remains an easy-to-understand system while achieving greater depth than ever before

Guilty Gear: Arc System Works’ signature series

Where the series began

The original Guilty Gear first released in 1998. Daisuke Ishiwatari created the game, which introduced an original setting, a cast built around strong visual identities and a fighting system that included instant-kill attacks. Arc System Works identifies it as a 2D fighting game and lists itself as developer and publisher for the modern Nintendo Switch and PC release.

That starting point matters because Guilty Gear was not designed as a conventional tournament fighter with interchangeable martial-arts characters. Its world, music, character designs and risk-heavy mechanics were part of the appeal from the beginning. Later games expanded the story and presentation while retaining the idea that each fighter should play and feel substantially different.

Guilty Gear -Strive-

Guilty Gear -Strive- is the latest entry in the long-running series and the clearest introduction for most new players. It launched on June 11, 2021, using hybrid 2D/3D cel-shaded visuals rather than flat sprites alone. The result preserves the look of an animated 2D fighter while allowing dramatic camera movement and large-scale impact effects.

The official product description lists a roster of 32 or more fighters. It also lists ranked online matches, training, tutorial and mission content, arcade play and a story mode. That combination gives the game two distinct uses: a structured solo introduction and a competitive online game for players who want to keep improving after the tutorials.

Supported platforms listed by Arc System Works are Game Pass, PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S. Cross-platform features, downloadable content and edition contents can differ, so check the current platform listing rather than assuming every version has identical options.

Current support and player scale

In a May 15, 2026 release, Arc System Works announced a limited-time Blazing Pass feature and said that Guilty Gear -Strive- had surpassed 3.5 million players globally across packaged and downloaded copies. That figure is the company’s global cumulative player statement, not a measure of simultaneous users or a guarantee of current matchmaking activity in every region.

BlazBlue: the other core Arc System Works fighter

Arc System Works’ own company description names Guilty Gear and, more recently, BlazBlue as the series for which it is best known. The company highlights both franchises for innovative fighting systems and highly stylized 2D and 3D artwork.

BlazBlue is a separate universe rather than a continuation of Guilty Gear. It is generally the better fit for players who want a fighter with a prominent narrative framework, a large cast and mechanics that vary sharply from one character to another. You do not need to know Guilty Gear to play it, and knowledge of one series does not substitute for learning the other’s systems.

Because the catalog contains multiple BlazBlue releases and regional availability varies, identify the exact title, platform and online population before purchasing. A game’s age can affect whether ranked matchmaking is busy even when the series remains historically important.

Other Arc System Works fighting games

Under Night In-Birth

Under Night In-Birth is another fighting-game family in the official catalog. It is a useful choice for players who want an anime-styled competitive fighter outside the two headline franchises. Its inclusion also illustrates that Arc System Works’ fighting expertise is not limited to games it originated entirely in-house.

DNF Duel

DNF Duel appears in the catalog as a fighting game. It is based on the Dungeon Fighter property, so it is a licensed or collaborative project rather than another entry in the Guilty Gear or BlazBlue universes. Start here if you prefer a fighter whose characters and setting come from an established action-RPG property.

Code Shifter

Code Shifter is listed as an action fighter. It sits closer to a compact crossover-style action experience than to the long-form competitive identity of Guilty Gear -Strive-. Check its current platform listing and included modes before treating it as a substitute for a full tournament fighter.

Guilty Gear -Strive- Nintendo Switch Edition
  • Enjoy high-quality animation and graphics at 60FPS framerate.
  • Battle your friends anywhere, anytime, via handheld mode.
  • All Season Pass contents up to Season 3 included out-of-box.

HUNTER×HUNTER NEN×IMPACT

HUNTER×HUNTER NEN×IMPACT is a licensed project in the catalog. Its presence shows how Arc System Works applies its fighting-game production experience to anime and manga properties, where the appeal depends partly on recognition of the source characters and setting.

River City, Kunio-kun and Double Dragon

River City and Kunio-kun

The River City and Kunio-kun families cover brawlers and action games with a very different rhythm from a round-based fighter. Instead of selecting a character and learning frame-by-frame exchanges, you typically move through stages or areas, defeat groups of opponents and use movement, pickups or progression systems to shape your run.

The catalog also includes River City Saga titles. These entries are useful for players who like the series’ comic tone but want a broader adventure structure rather than a purely linear arcade beat-’em-up. The precise mechanics differ by release, so use the individual game description when deciding between entries.

Double Dragon

Double Dragon is the other major brawler family associated with the catalog. Its defining format is cooperative beat-’em-up action: two players can often work through enemy-filled stages together, combining basic attacks, grabs and environmental tactics.

Choose Double Dragon when you want immediate action and local or cooperative play, not when you are specifically looking for ranked one-on-one competition. The series’ arcade roots make the control priorities and progression structure different from those of Guilty Gear or BlazBlue.

Super Technos World

Super Technos World is another catalog family connected to the company’s action and arcade heritage. It is relevant to players exploring the broader Technos lineage behind several brawler properties, but it should be evaluated as its own release rather than assumed to be a compilation with identical content in every region.

Arc System Works games outside fighting and brawling

The official catalog includes projects that do not fit the company’s fighter-first reputation. Examples include:

  • Bubble Bobble: Sugar Dungeons: an adventure and puzzle-oriented title in the Bubble Bobble tradition.
  • Library of Ruina: a strategy and role-playing experience with a darker, systems-driven presentation.
  • Ground Divers!: an action-oriented project built around exploration and excavation themes.
  • Dear Me, I Was…: a narrative-focused title that demonstrates the catalog’s visual-novel and story-game range.
  • DONUTAL, DAMON and BABY: newer or smaller original projects listed among the company’s recent releases.

Other catalog entries may be tagged as RPG, puzzle, strategy, visual novel or action. If you are browsing without a specific franchise in mind, filter by genre first; the publisher name alone does not tell you whether a game is competitive, story-driven or suitable for cooperative play.

How to choose the right Arc System Works game

If you want… Start by looking at… Why
Ranked one-on-one competition Guilty Gear -Strive- or an active BlazBlue/Under Night In-Birth release These are built around deliberate character matchups and online fighting
A story-led fighter BlazBlue or Guilty Gear -Strive- Both series place more emphasis on fictional worlds and character identity than a generic arcade fighter
Fast cooperative action Double Dragon or a River City brawler Brawlers focus on clearing groups of enemies rather than winning individual rounds
An anime or manga license DNF Duel or HUNTER×HUNTER NEN×IMPACT The appeal includes characters and settings from an established property
Puzzle or adventure play Bubble Bobble: Sugar Dungeons or another catalog entry filtered by genre The objective is progression and problem-solving rather than combat mastery
A strategy or narrative experiment Library of Ruina, Dear Me, I Was… or the catalog’s strategy/visual-novel filters These projects use different pacing and decision-making from arcade games

Platforms, editions and solo versus online play

Arc System Works releases across several hardware categories. The catalog includes console, PC, mobile and Game Pass listings, but support is title-specific. Do not infer that a Nintendo release, PlayStation release or mobile version exists simply because another game from the same family has one.

Guilty Gear -Strive- is the clearest example of a multi-platform release: the official page lists PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and Game Pass. Its solo modes include training, tutorials, missions, arcade and story content, while ranked online matches provide the competitive route. That makes it the safest recommendation when one player wants practice tools and another wants online competition.

For older fighters, verify whether online functions, downloadable content and regional versions are still supported on your chosen storefront. A complete roster may require additional content, and a physical package can contain different bonuses from a digital edition.

Where to buy Guilty Gear -Strive- for PS5

The official Guilty Gear -Strive- page links to a GG 25th Anniversary Edition for PlayStation 5 through Amazon. That makes “Guilty Gear -Strive- PS5” a practical search phrase when you are looking for the physical anniversary product.

Before ordering, confirm the seller, region, disc condition, included downloadable content and whether the listing is the anniversary edition rather than the standard release. Retail inventory and prices change, so the official product page and the current retailer listing are the reliable checks for what is actually available.

What should you play after Guilty Gear?

If you want another competitive fighter

Try BlazBlue for another Arc System Works fighter with a separate setting and a strong story identity. Consider Under Night In-Birth if you want a different competitive system, or DNF Duel if an established action-RPG universe appeals to you. Compare platform, roster and online activity for the exact release rather than choosing only by franchise name.

If you want less competitive pressure

Move to River City, Kunio-kun or Double Dragon for stage-based brawling. These games still reward timing and movement, but they do not require the same matchup knowledge as a ranked fighter.

If you want something completely different

Use the official catalog’s genre filters to find puzzle, RPG, strategy, visual-novel or adventure releases. Bubble Bobble: Sugar Dungeons, Library of Ruina, Ground Divers! and Dear Me, I Was… demonstrate how far the catalog extends beyond fighting games.

Why Arc System Works is associated so strongly with fighting games

The association comes from both history and presentation. Guilty Gear established the company’s signature combination of original world-building, eclectic characters and unconventional mechanics. BlazBlue reinforced that identity with another internationally recognized fighting series. Later projects applied the studio’s combat expertise to original, crossover and licensed properties.

That reputation should be treated as a starting clue, not a complete catalog description. Arc System Works can publish or develop an arcade brawler, a licensed anime fighter, a puzzle adventure or a strategy game without making it part of the Guilty Gear design tradition.

How to check the newest releases

Use Arc System Works’ official catalog and filter by genre, platform or release category. Then open the individual product page to verify the edition, supported hardware, release date and available modes. This matters especially for downloadable content, Game Pass inclusion, regional storefronts and online features, all of which can change after a game’s original launch.

For Guilty Gear -Strive-, the May 15, 2026 announcement of Blazing Pass and the 3.5-million-player milestone confirms that the flagship game is still receiving official attention. It does not establish identical support schedules for every older fighter or brawler in the catalog.
