PlayStation gameplay data can include far more than your match result. Sony says it may collect in-game actions and progress, online activity, players you encounter, trophies, scores, rankings, console and peripheral details, software-use patterns, errors and load times. If automatic system-error reporting is enabled, a crash report may also contain screenshots or video captured before the crash. Offline play does not necessarily prevent collection: Sony says some game-use information can remain on the console until it reconnects.
On PS5, choose Limited Data rather than Full Data to reduce platform-level collection, inspect each game’s own privacy notice and settings, review automatic crash reporting, restrict what other players can see, and unlink authorized apps you no longer use. These controls address different data flows, and their availability can vary by country, console, game and release date.
What “gameplay data” includes
Sony’s privacy policy describes several categories of information connected with PlayStation games. The list is a description of data Sony may collect, not a claim that every title sends every field in every session.

For games developed or published by Sony Interactive Entertainment or another Sony Interactive Entertainment company, Sony gives examples such as which obstacle you jump over and which levels you reach. A PlayStation studio’s game-data explanation adds examples including how you use the interface, areas you visit, weapons you use, characters you interact with and errors you encounter. This is the in-game behavioral layer: it can describe what you did, not simply whether you launched a title.

Online play and players encountered
Sony says it may log activity on game servers, including account and device identifiers, online-game use and the players you play against. That can connect a session to your PlayStation account or console and record the social context of online play.
Trophies, scores and rankings
The policy lists trophies, scores and rankings among the information associated with PlayStation use. These records may be visible to other users depending on your profile and activity settings, while Sony’s internal collection is a separate matter.
Console, network and peripheral information
Related records can include console and other device identifiers, network identifiers such as IP and MAC addresses, current or recent location, connected peripherals, device configuration and information about installed software use. This context helps distinguish a game event from the hardware, account and network environment in which it occurred.

Sony also lists software errors and load times. When Report System Software Errors Automatically is enabled, detailed crash information may include screenshots and video captured before the crash. That is more revealing than a simple error code, so review the setting if you do not want those visual details sent automatically. Turning it off does not establish that all other diagnostics stop.
Information from linked services
Authorized third-party apps can receive some account data. PlayStation’s support guidance gives online status and gameplay information as examples. Sony’s privacy guidance also describes a linked Apple Music example involving a media library, ratings or listening activity. A connection you approved for convenience can therefore create a separate sharing path from the console’s own collection.
Does offline play stop data collection?
No. Sony says information about game use can be collected even when a game is used offline. In that situation, some data may be stored on the device and collected the next time the console connects. Disconnecting temporarily can delay transmission; it is not a guaranteed opt-out.
Offline behavior can also differ by title. A game may keep local saves or telemetry until a network connection is available, while another may ask about data collection during setup. Check the game’s notice rather than assuming that “offline” means “no data.”

Sony’s US privacy guidance describes two PS5 platform-level choices:
| Setting | What Sony describes | Who should choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Limited Data | Data Sony says is necessary to provide its services. | People who want to minimize optional platform-level collection while retaining PlayStation services. |
| Full Data | Allows additional collection for purposes such as improving the experience. | People willing to share more usage information for those purposes. |
Limited Data is the collection-minimizing choice documented by Sony, but it is not a promise that nothing is collected. Sony still describes necessary service data as collected. The setting also does not override a game’s own notice, a server’s operational records or information an authorized app receives.

How to reduce PlayStation gameplay-data collection
1. Select Limited Data on PS5
- Open the PS5 privacy or data-collection settings when prompted during setup or when reviewing your account and console privacy options.
- Choose Limited Data instead of Full Data.
- Read the accompanying regional notice. Sony may present different choices or wording depending on your country.
If you previously selected Full Data, revisit the same privacy area and change the choice. Menu wording can change with system software and locale, so follow the current on-screen labels rather than an old screenshot.
2. Read the game’s own notice and settings
Platform settings do not necessarily control every title. Sony says collection choices can depend on region and may be offered per game for games released after March 2018. A game’s first-run privacy or data notice is therefore important, especially for a title published by a company outside Sony.

- Launch the game and read its first-run privacy or data-collection notice before accepting.
- Open the game’s Settings, Options or Privacy section and look for labels such as Game Data, Analytics, Diagnostics or Data Collection.
- Disable optional collection where the game offers that choice, then save the setting.
- Recheck after a major update; a patch can add settings or restore a default.
Santa Monica Studio illustrates the kind of title-level control a game may provide: its official data-collection article says, “The Game Data settings allow you to control if Game data is collected or stored from your device.” That statement applies to the studio’s documented game settings, not universally to every PlayStation title.
3. Review automatic system-error reporting
On the console, inspect the setting named Report System Software Errors Automatically. If it is enabled, Sony says detailed crash information may include screenshots and video captured before the crash. Turn it off if you prefer not to send those visual crash details automatically, while understanding that the available evidence does not show that disabling it prevents every form of diagnostic or service data collection.
4. Limit what other players can see
PS5 provides four privacy presets, ranging from Social and Open to Solo and Focused, plus individual controls. Use them to manage profile and activity visibility, communications and who can interact with you. PlayStation also provides a way to hide games from the visible activity list.
These are audience controls. Hiding a game, trophy or activity from your profile does not disable Sony’s internal collection. Treat the two goals separately:
- Reduce Sony or a publisher’s collection: use Limited Data and any game-specific data controls.
- Reduce disclosure to other players: use privacy presets, activity visibility and communication controls.
5. Unlink authorized apps
Review apps connected to your PlayStation account and remove services you no longer need. PlayStation documents these routes:
- PS5: Settings > Users and Accounts > Authorized Apps.
- PS4: Settings > Account Management > Authorized Apps.
- PlayStation App: Settings > Authorized Apps.
- Web: use Account Management and open the authorized-apps controls.
Unlink an app you no longer recognize or use. A linked app may receive account information such as online status and gameplay information, so removing the authorization closes that sharing path. Unlinking does not erase records already retained by Sony or the app; deletion requests are a separate process.
6. Use regional privacy and data-access rights
PlayStation’s privacy guidance says people can access and delete personal information Sony holds, but the available rights depend on country. Use the privacy policy and the account data-access or privacy-request tools for your region. Do not assume that a request produces the same result everywhere or that deleting an account leaves service records immediately inaccessible.

What each control does—and does not do
| Control | Primary audience | Effect | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS5 Limited Data | Sony platform services | Chooses the narrower platform-level collection option Sony documents. | Necessary service data can still be collected; game-specific and server records may remain. |
| Game Data or privacy setting | The individual game or publisher | May control collection or local storage of title-level game data. | Availability and wording vary by game, region and release. |
| Report System Software Errors Automatically | Sony diagnostics | Controls automatic reporting associated with detailed system-error information. | Turning it off is not established as a complete diagnostic opt-out. |
| Privacy presets and activity visibility | Other PlayStation users | Controls profile visibility, communications, interactions and visible activity. | Does not disable Sony’s internal collection. |
| Authorized Apps | Linked third-party services | Removes an app’s current authorization to receive account data. | Does not automatically delete data the app or Sony already retained. |
| Data-access or deletion request | Sony’s privacy process | Can provide access to, or request deletion of, personal information where local law allows. | Rights and outcomes depend on country. |
How region, game and release date change the answer
There is no single worldwide PlayStation gameplay-data switch. Sony says choices may depend on your region. It also says that, for games released after March 2018, collection choices may be available on a device- or app-specific basis. A title can therefore offer a setting that another game does not, and a menu available in one country may not appear in another.

The documented authorized-app paths differ between PS5, PS4 and the PlayStation App. System software updates can rename or relocate controls. Use the current notice shown on your console and the privacy documentation applicable to your country when a label in an older guide does not match.
A practical privacy checklist
- Set PS5 platform data sharing to Limited Data.
- Read the title’s first-run data notice instead of accepting it blindly.
- Check the game’s own Privacy, Analytics, Diagnostics or Game Data menu.
- Review Report System Software Errors Automatically if crash screenshots or video concern you.
- Choose a PS5 privacy preset and adjust individual profile, activity and communication controls.
- Hide games from your public activity list when you do not want other players to see them; remember that this is not a Sony collection opt-out.
- Open Authorized Apps on every PlayStation device or app you use and unlink services you no longer need.
- For a formal copy or deletion request, use the privacy process for your country.
Common misunderstandings
“I never play online, so Sony cannot collect gameplay data.”
Offline use can still be stored on the device and collected after reconnection. Online play adds server activity and player-match information, but it is not the only source of game-use data.
“Hiding a game from my profile stops tracking.”
Hiding changes what other users can see. It does not change Sony’s platform collection or a game’s own telemetry settings.
“Limited Data means no data.”
Limited Data is Sony’s narrower PS5 choice, defined as information necessary to provide services. It is not zero collection.
“Turning off crash reporting blocks every diagnostic.”
Sony specifically connects the automatic-error setting with detailed crash information that may include screenshots and video. The policy also lists errors and load times separately, so do not treat one switch as proof that all diagnostics end.
“Unlinking an app deletes everything it already received.”
Unlinking prevents the current authorization from continuing. It does not by itself erase information already retained by the app or Sony; request deletion through the relevant privacy process.
Bottom line for privacy-conscious players
Start with PS5’s Limited Data, then work outward: inspect each game’s notice and settings, review automatic crash reporting, restrict visibility to other players and remove unused authorized apps. Keep the boundaries clear. Platform collection, a game’s own telemetry, what other players can see and what a linked app receives are separate channels. Because Sony’s options vary by region, console, title and release, the notice shown on your system is the final authority for the controls available to your account.
