Grand Theft Auto VI uses an updated version of Rockstar Advanced Game Engine (RAGE), Rockstar Games’ proprietary technology family. That is the most defensible answer based on RAGE’s documented use across Rockstar’s major open-world games and current technical reporting that identifies an updated RAGE engine for GTA VI.

Rockstar has not published a numbered engine release, so labels such as “RAGE 9” are speculation. The company also has not confirmed a complete rewrite, a specific renderer, ray-tracing modes, resolution targets or a frame-rate target. The official material does confirm that the extended trailer was captured entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5 and that the announced platforms are PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

What Rockstar has officially confirmed about GTA VI

Rockstar’s official Grand Theft Auto VI page places the game in the fictional state of Leonida, including Vice City, and lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S as the announced platforms. Those details establish the launch-platform family Rockstar is targeting, but the page does not identify a RAGE build number or publish an engine specification.

Rockstar’s Newswire described the extended presentation this way: Captured entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5, this extended look at Grand Theft Auto VI showcases the biggest, most immersive evolution of the series yet. The wording confirms that the material was captured from the game rather than being only a pre-rendered cinematic. It does not disclose whether the footage represents a final retail configuration, which visual settings were active, or what performance mode was used.

In a 4 December 2023 announcement, Take-Two quoted Sam Houser, founder of Rockstar Games: Grand Theft Auto VI continues our efforts to push the limits of what’s possible in highly immersive, story-driven open-world experiences. That is a description of the project’s ambition, not a technical claim about a particular graphics API, frame rate or engine version.

Why RAGE is the likely engine answer

RAGE stands for Rockstar Advanced Game Engine. It is Rockstar’s internally developed technology family, not a consumer product that Rockstar licenses in the way studios license a general-purpose engine. A documented history traces RAGE’s first game use to Rockstar Games Presents: Table Tennis, followed by major releases including Grand Theft Auto IV, Red Dead Redemption, Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2.

That continuity is the strongest reason to identify RAGE as GTA VI’s foundation. Rockstar has repeatedly extended its own tools and runtime technology for large, streamed open worlds, character systems, animation, physics, audio and online services. Nothing in the official GTA VI material suggests a switch to Unreal Engine 5 or another outside engine.

A current GTA VI technology reference describes the game as running on an updated version of RAGE and bases its observations on Rockstar-published trailers and screenshots. This is the clearest direct technical description available, although it is reporting rather than a Rockstar engineering document. It supports the wording “updated RAGE,” not a specific internal version number.

What “updated RAGE” means in practice

An updated engine does not have to be an entirely new codebase. Large studios normally preserve mature systems that already work while replacing or expanding subsystems as hardware, tools and game design change. A GTA VI-era RAGE could therefore share technology, file formats or development tools with earlier Rockstar games while introducing substantial changes to rendering, streaming, animation, lighting, simulation, networking and content creation.

Systems an engine like RAGE coordinates

  • World streaming: loading and unloading terrain, buildings, props, characters and audio as the player moves through a large map without relying on traditional level transitions.
  • Rendering: turning geometry, materials, lighting, shadows, reflections and effects into each displayed frame.
  • Animation and crowds: blending authored motion with runtime reactions for the player, pedestrians, vehicles and animals.
  • Physics and vehicles: handling collisions, movement, destruction and other simulated interactions.
  • Audio: positioning dialogue, ambience, music and effects in a changing three-dimensional environment.
  • Tools and pipelines: allowing Rockstar’s artists, designers, writers and programmers to build and test content at the scale of a modern open-world game.

These are the normal responsibilities of a proprietary open-world engine, not a list of GTA VI specifications. Rockstar has not published a subsystem-by-subsystem breakdown, so it is not possible to say which parts were retained, replaced or newly written.

Confirmed, well supported and unresolved claims

Claim Status What can responsibly be said
GTA VI uses RAGE Well supported The game is best described as using an updated Rockstar Advanced Game Engine, consistent with RAGE’s documented continuity and current technical reporting.
A numbered build called “RAGE 9” Unconfirmed Rockstar has not publicly supplied that label or any other numbered RAGE version for GTA VI.
Rockstar completely rebuilt the engine Unconfirmed The technology may have changed substantially, but no official statement proves a total rewrite.
Unreal Engine 5 powers GTA VI Unsupported Official GTA VI materials do not identify Unreal Engine 5; Rockstar’s established proprietary technology points to RAGE instead.
GTA VI is built on the Red Dead Redemption 2 engine Overly broad Both games belong to Rockstar’s RAGE technology lineage, but Rockstar has not said that GTA VI uses an unchanged Red Dead Redemption 2 engine.
Ray-tracing mode, resolution or frame rate Unresolved No authoritative specification has been published in the official pages and footage statements reviewed.

Is GTA VI using “RAGE 9”?

There is no official confirmation of a RAGE 9 designation. Online version numbers can arise from fan conventions, résumé descriptions, forum posts or attempts to count internal milestones, but an internal label is not established merely because it appears repeatedly online.

The safer description is “an updated iteration of RAGE.” It communicates that GTA VI is not expected to use the exact technology configuration shipped years earlier, while avoiding a number Rockstar has never announced. If Rockstar later names a version, that statement can replace the qualified wording; until then, a precise number would turn speculation into a false fact.

Did Rockstar rebuild RAGE from scratch?

Former Rockstar audio designer Rob Carr said he would be amazed if Rockstar had not rebuilt most of RAGE, because technology architecture had advanced significantly since Grand Theft Auto V. Carr’s comment is informed outside commentary, but he was not presented as a current GTA VI engineer. It explains why a major technical evolution is plausible; it cannot establish that every subsystem was replaced or that development restarted from a blank codebase.

In long-running engines, “rebuilt” can mean different things. A renderer may be replaced while editor tools remain familiar; streaming may be redesigned while asset formats are converted automatically; or old code may remain behind a new interface. Without Rockstar’s source-level documentation, readers should treat claims about a complete rewrite as interpretation rather than confirmation.

Is GTA VI made with Unreal Engine 5?

There is no evidence in the official GTA VI announcements that Unreal Engine 5 is the game’s engine. Unreal is a widely licensed engine, whereas Rockstar has a documented practice of developing and extending RAGE for its flagship open-world releases. The absence of an Unreal announcement does not prove what every internal tool uses, but it makes “GTA VI runs on Unreal Engine 5” an unsupported claim.

Comparing RAGE with Unreal is useful only when the comparison uses verifiable criteria:

Comparison axis Rockstar’s RAGE Unreal Engine 5
Ownership model Rockstar’s proprietary technology family, developed for its games and production teams. A commercially licensed general-purpose engine developed by Epic Games.
Rockstar open-world history Documented across Table Tennis, Grand Theft Auto IV, Red Dead Redemption, Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2. Not the documented engine lineage of those Rockstar flagship releases.
GTA VI platform evidence Consistent with the announced PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S targets. No official GTA VI announcement identifies it.
Public documentation for this game Limited: Rockstar confirms in-game footage and platforms but not a numbered build or full specification. Extensive public product documentation exists for Unreal generally, but that does not establish its use in GTA VI.

Neither engine is universally “better.” A proprietary engine can be deeply optimized for a studio’s asset pipeline and design priorities, while a licensed engine offers broad documentation and tools for many developers. The relevant question for GTA VI is what Rockstar’s updated RAGE can deliver on the announced consoles, not which engine wins an abstract feature checklist.

What the engine could mean for GTA VI’s open world

RAGE’s lineage matters because Rockstar’s games depend on continuous world simulation rather than isolated levels. The engine must coordinate a city and surrounding regions, traffic, pedestrians, missions, weather, audio and streaming while maintaining responsive controls. An updated version can improve those systems, but trailers alone cannot reveal exact memory budgets, simulation distances or internal scheduling.

Official footage can show that Rockstar is presenting the game as an in-game experience, yet it cannot by itself prove a particular rendering technique. A reflection that looks like ray tracing could come from several methods; a dense crowd could be a mixture of simulation and authored background activity. Without a technical presentation or performance analysis from Rockstar, describe visible qualities as presentation evidence, not as named engine features.

Will GTA VI run at 60 frames per second?

Rockstar has not published a target frame rate for GTA VI. The announced platforms are PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, but platform confirmation does not imply a 30- or 60-frame-per-second mode. Resolution, quality modes, dynamic scaling and ray-tracing settings are likewise unannounced in the official material covered here.

Do not treat trailer playback, video-player settings or social-media claims as proof of the retail performance target. A trailer may be edited, captured under a development configuration or presented without a frame-rate counter. A reliable answer requires Rockstar to state the target or provide a final technical specification.

How to evaluate new engine claims

  1. Look for a primary statement. Prefer an official Rockstar or Take-Two announcement, developer presentation or technical document that names the engine or version.
  2. Separate the engine from the renderer. A renderer, physics library or middleware package can change without changing the identity of the overall engine.
  3. Check the scope of the claim. “Uses updated RAGE” is different from “every system was rewritten” or “the game is RAGE 9.”
  4. Demand conditions for performance numbers. Any resolution or frame-rate figure should identify the console, mode, build and measurement method.
  5. Keep footage and specification distinct. In-game footage demonstrates presentation, not a complete list of technical settings.

What is known about platforms and editions

The official platform listing is PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. That means the engine work described publicly is aimed at current-generation console hardware rather than the older PlayStation 4 or Xbox One baseline. Rockstar has not supplied a full PC specification or announced a PC version in the materials summarized here, so readers should not infer one from the console listing.

For buyers, the practical distinction is platform-specific: a PlayStation 5 edition and an Xbox Series X|S edition are the paths Rockstar has identified. Edition names, release timing, regional availability and retailer details can change, so verify those particulars on Rockstar’s live product information before purchasing.

The bottom line on GTA VI’s engine

Call GTA VI an updated RAGE game. That wording reflects Rockstar’s proprietary-engine history and the clearest current technical reporting without inventing a version number. Rockstar’s own pages establish Leonida and Vice City, the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S platforms, and in-game footage captured on PlayStation 5. They do not establish “RAGE 9,” a total engine rewrite, Unreal Engine 5, ray-tracing settings, resolution or a 60-fps target.
