Friend.py is a beginner-focused Python learning app that brings lessons, an AI chat tutor, quizzes, code writing and execution, and hints for failed solutions into one learning flow. Its author, Ankan Mahapatra, says he built it for a friend who was just starting to learn programming. The features and setup described here come from Mahapatra’s DEV Community post, published October 4, 2026; they have not been independently verified.
How Friend.py is meant to help a beginner learn
Instead of separating instruction from practice, Friend.py is described as combining several activities in one app. A learner can study a Python topic, ask the tutor to explain a concept, check understanding with a quiz, write and run code, then get hints if a solution fails. The author characterizes the tutor’s explanations as simple and beginner-friendly.
- Topic-based lessons: A structured curriculum introduces Python concepts.
- Chat tutor: Learners can ask questions and request explanations.
- Quiz generator: The app generates questions for practice.
- Code editor and runner: Learners can write and execute code within the app.
- Solution feedback: When code does not work, a reviewer is described as offering hints.
That combination may be useful to someone who wants to move between explanation and hands-on exercises without switching tools. The project description does not establish how broad the curriculum is, how accurate the tutor’s answers are, or whether the feedback reliably identifies mistakes.

How the local and hosted setups differ
Mahapatra describes Friend.py as a Streamlit app with two model-provider paths: local inference through Ollama, or a hosted deployment on Render that uses Groq. These are the configurations reported in the October 4, 2026 post, not a confirmation of what is currently deployed or supported.
#1 Best Overall
| Setup | Model connection described | Internet and privacy boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Local | Ollama through an OpenAI-compatible endpoint. The post names llama3.1:8b for tutoring and quiz generation and qwen2.5-coder:7b for code review. |
The author says local use can work offline and characterizes sessions as staying local. Data handling has not been independently audited. |
| Hosted demo | Render deployment using Groq, configured with a GROQ_API_KEY. |
This is a hosted path, not an offline mode. The post does not establish how prompts, code, or other session data are handled by the deployment or provider. |
The model names and deployment details are the author’s reported configuration at publication, not a guarantee that the same versions, providers, or endpoints remain available. The post links to a project article on DEV Community, which also points readers to a demo and source repository; their current availability and contents have not been independently confirmed.
What to know about code execution and safety
The author says the code runner uses subprocess execution, a short timeout, and blocks unsafe imports. The post does not specify the timeout duration or provide an independent security review. Those safeguards should therefore be understood as design measures described by the author, not a guarantee that running untrusted or harmful code is safe. Avoid putting sensitive information into a hosted coding session unless you have checked the deployment’s data practices.

What is not established about Friend.py
The project description gives an overview, but does not independently confirm current access or provide enough information to assess the app as a complete learning environment. It does not establish the repository’s license, setup requirements, supported Python versions, accessibility, feature reliability, or the app’s learning outcomes. Beginners should treat it as a potentially useful practice companion rather than a proven substitute for a complete course or trusted reference material.
