Four-winged dinosaurs show that some close relatives of birds carried long feathers on both their forelimbs and hindlimbs—and that feathered animals explored more than one body plan as flight evolved. They do not show that these species were direct ancestors of birds, or settle whether they glided, flapped, or did both.
What does “four-winged” mean?
It describes feathered limbs, not four separate arms. In Microraptor, long feathers formed wing-like surfaces on both the forelimbs and hindlimbs. The Natural History Museum (NHM) describes this small feathered dinosaur as about 77 centimetres long. Its four-limbed feathering is a striking example of the anatomical variety among bird relatives.
Feathers themselves did not begin simply as flight equipment. The NHM notes that feathers in living birds also provide insulation, display, and camouflage, and that such functions were more likely early drivers before flight feathers evolved. Many feathered dinosaurs could not fly.

What can fossils tell us about flight?
Preserved anatomy is evidence, not a record of behavior
Fossils can preserve feather arrangement and limb proportions, but they do not record how an animal moved through the air. Researchers infer flight-related ability from anatomy, comparisons with living birds, and aerodynamic experiments. Those lines of evidence can support an interpretation without making it certain.

The NHM reports evidence relevant to Microraptor’s aerial ability, including anatomical features and lift experiments, while noting that whether it could achieve powered flight remains debated. It is therefore too strong to call it certainly a powered flier or certainly a glider only.
Feather shape and wing proportions add another test
A 2024 Field Museum report describes work by Yosef Kiat and Jingmai O’Connor comparing 346 living bird species and examining 65 fossil specimens representing 35 feathered dinosaur and extinct-bird species. Their approach used feather shape and primary-feather counts to infer flight-related traits.

Under the researchers’ criteria, Archaeopteryx and Microraptor had wings that looked flight-ready. Caudipteryx shows why one trait cannot decide the question: it had a primary-feather count associated with flight, but its near-symmetrical feathers and wing proportions did not fit a flying animal. The report presents the suggestion that dinosaurian flight originated once as preliminary; early feathered wings remain an active area of study.
Did early flight begin in trees or on the ground?
Two broad hypotheses propose different starting points, and a mixed route is also possible. The NHM presents the debate this way:

Palaeontologist Xu Xing, quoted by the NHM, argues against treating gliding and flapping as mutually exclusive: “I believe that early flight was likely gliding dominant, but with some flapping behaviour.” This is an interpretation, not a settled account of exactly how flight began.
Were four-winged dinosaurs ancestors of birds?
Not necessarily. Microraptor was closely related to birds, but the NHM explicitly says it was not on the evolutionary lineage leading to them. Its value is as evidence that close relatives of birds experimented with feathered limbs and aerial movement—not as a missing link that directly connects dinosaurs to living birds.

Anchiornis is another feathered dinosaur with feathers on its arms and legs. Its position on the evolutionary tree has been debated. The NHM says experts think its feathers were too short for true flight, though it may have glided between trees. Both its locomotion and the broader significance of its anatomy should be treated as interpretations.

The Field Museum reports that the specimen preserves only part of an arm; long feathers on both front and back limbs are inferred from its microraptor relatives, rather than all being directly preserved in this fossil. Researchers have proposed that Jian may have glided and may have preyed on early birds at the fossil site. These are hypotheses based on the specimen and context. Jingmai O’Connor, the Field Museum’s associate curator of fossil reptiles, said: “Jian and the other microraptors probably weren’t capable of true, powered flight, but they could probably glide like a flying squirrel.”

Where does Archaeopteryx fit?
The NHM dates Archaeopteryx to about 150 million years ago. It combined bird-like traits with teeth, a long bony tail, and claws on its hands. Whether to call it a bird depends partly on how “bird” is defined; it is a reminder that evolutionary changes do not arrive as a neat package that cleanly separates one familiar group from another.
As palaeontologist Daniel Field puts it in the NHM account: “Exactly when something is sufficiently ‘bird-like’ to be called a bird is very subjective.” Feathers and other bird-like traits evolved among theropod dinosaurs before modern birds appeared, so the boundary in the fossil record is gradual and definition-dependent.
