Scientists infer what extinct animals ate by combining tooth and jaw shape, microscopic wear, and chemical traces in fossil tissues. These clues can reveal what foods an animal was equipped to process and what kinds of food it encountered, but they rarely identify every item on its menu. The strongest conclusions come from independent evidence interpreted against appropriate comparisons.
What can a tooth reveal about diet?
A fossil tooth offers more than one kind of evidence. Its overall form reflects how it could cut, crush, or grind food and may preserve a long-term evolutionary signal. Tiny marks on its surface can record use during the animal’s life. Chemical ratios preserved in fossil tissue can add evidence about broad food sources and the environment.
These clues answer different questions. Shape and jaw mechanics are most useful for understanding feeding capability; microwear can offer a more immediate clue about food texture and use; isotope chemistry can help distinguish broad plant-resource patterns. None is a literal record of every meal.

Put simply, scientists begin with what a tooth could do, then look for evidence of what it did and what broad resources the animal may have relied on. A tooth’s shape reflects adaptations accumulated over evolutionary time, while surface wear records interactions during the animal’s life. Isotopes offer a separate chemical perspective. When these lines of evidence agree, they can strengthen an interpretation; when they differ, researchers need to keep in mind that the methods answer different questions.

How tooth and jaw shape suggest feeding capability
Tooth shape and jaw structure help researchers reason about how an animal processed food. The form of a tooth can be consistent with cutting, crushing, or grinding, while the jaw provides context for how the teeth met and functioned. Together, these features can suggest what an animal was capable of eating.
Capability is not the same as a complete menu. Similar-looking features may reflect shared ancestry as well as adaptation to food, so morphology alone does not establish which foods an animal ate most often. Researchers interpret it as one line of evidence rather than proof of a specific diet. AMNH’s overview of what teeth can tell us explains the value and limits of tooth form.
This distinction matters because a structure that is useful for processing a food does not prove that the animal ate it regularly. Tooth and jaw form are best treated as evidence of possible feeding mechanics and evolutionary adaptation. To move from capability toward likely behavior, researchers look for evidence that reflects use, such as microscopic wear, and may add chemical evidence from fossil tissue.

What microscopic pits and scratches show
Dental microwear is the pattern of microscopic pits and scratches on a tooth surface. Because these marks form through interactions with food and other abrasives, they can provide evidence about the mechanical properties of what an animal encountered. They do not usually identify an exact food species.
Reading the wear pattern
In the American Museum of Natural History’s educational explanation, heavily pitted surfaces commonly indicate harder, brittle items. Scratches on shearing surfaces can indicate tougher foods, while intermediate patterns may fit mixed diets. These are broad interpretations: a mark is not a label for a particular plant or animal, and the pattern must be compared with relevant examples.

The useful distinction is often texture or mechanical property, not a precise food identity. Pits and scratches can help indicate whether an animal encountered relatively hard, brittle items or tougher foods, but they cannot ordinarily tell researchers which exact species of plant or animal was eaten. Intermediate wear may be consistent with a mixed diet, but it should not be treated as a direct inventory of meals. Microwear provides a closer-to-the-animal record than evolutionary shape alone, yet its interpretation still depends on context.
Why comparative baselines matter
Researchers compare fossil wear with reference samples from animals whose diets or feeding behavior are better understood. A 2006 study by Peter S. Ungar, Frederick E. Grine, Mark F. Teaford, and Sireen El Zaatari used living-primate and documented human-forager baselines to interpret microwear on early human relatives’ cheek teeth. In that comparison, more large pits were associated with hard-object specialists, while more striations and smaller features were associated with tough-food eaters. The study’s methods and findings show why microwear interpretations depend on comparison rather than a simple one-mark, one-food rule.
A comparative baseline gives researchers a way to judge a fossil pattern against patterns with known or better-understood feeding behavior. The comparison does not make fossil evidence identical to a modern animal’s evidence; it helps place the observed features in a meaningful range. That is why the choice of reference matters. A claim about food texture is stronger when the fossil wear is considered alongside appropriate examples than when a single pit or scratch is interpreted in isolation.
What isotope chemistry adds
Stable carbon-isotope ratios in fossil tissues can help distinguish broad patterns in plant resources. For herbivores, those ratios may help indicate whether an animal relied more on grasses or leaves, and they can contribute to reconstructions of past environments. Isotopes therefore add a chemical line of evidence that is different from the mechanical clues in tooth shape and wear.
A ratio is not self-explanatory: it has to be interpreted in biological and environmental context. The relationship between an animal’s diet and the isotope values preserved in its tissues is affected by the animal’s biology, so researchers need suitable calibration rather than assuming a single value applies to every species.

Isotope evidence is therefore most useful for broad resource patterns, not for naming individual foods. It can contribute to questions about an herbivore’s reliance on grasses versus leaves, while also informing aspects of the environment in which it lived. Because the evidence comes from chemical ratios, it complements rather than duplicates what the tooth surface says about texture or what tooth shape says about feeding mechanics.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe sloth example: calibration is not one-size-fits-all
AMNH’s June 27, 2018 account of isotope research on giant ground sloth Lestodon and related mammals describes a challenge to treating all herbivores with one constant isotope-enrichment value. Reported values differed among modern sloth species and extinct Mylodon; the account describes enrichment as generally increasing with body size and depending on digestive-tract makeup. The implication is methodological: isotope readings require calibration suited to the animal, not a universal numeric correction. AMNH’s account of the sloth research quotes Frick Curator of Fossil Mammals John Flynn: “Stable carbon isotope studies now are an essential part of our scientific toolkits, informing a wide array of paleontological and geological topics, from predator-prey interactions to ancient rainfall estimates.”
The sloth research is a reminder that a measured isotope value cannot be interpreted in isolation from the animal that produced it. A value used for one herbivore may not be suitable for another if body size or digestive-tract makeup differs. The reported pattern is a reason to calibrate carefully, not a universal correction that can be applied to every extinct animal. No single enrichment number should be generalized from this example to all herbivores.
A fossil example: early Homo cheek teeth
Ungar, Grine, Teaford, and El Zaatari examined preserved antemortem microwear on 18 cheek teeth from Plio-Pleistocene fossil sites in Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, and South Africa. The figure of 18 refers to that study’s sample, not to a general estimate of how many fossil teeth preserve usable wear.
Comparing the fossil teeth with living-primate and human-forager baselines, the authors concluded that none of the early Homo groups they studied specialized on very hard or tough foods. They also found more small pits on Homo erectus and Swartkrans Member 1 specimens than on Homo habilis and Sterkfontein Member 5C specimens. Those findings are bounded by the sampled teeth and comparisons; they do not establish a complete menu for every member of those groups.

The sample and the reference groups are essential parts of the result. The 18 teeth had preserved wear formed before death, and the team interpreted their patterns against living primates and documented human foragers. The conclusion is specifically that the early Homo groups examined did not show specialization on very hard or tough foods in this study. It is not a claim that the sample captures every individual or every food those groups consumed.
The differences in small-pit counts are also comparative findings, not a standalone menu. Homo erectus and Swartkrans Member 1 specimens had more small pits than the Homo habilis and Sterkfontein Member 5C specimens in the study. That contrast contributes to the interpretation of their wear patterns, but should be reported alongside the study’s broader conclusion and sample limits rather than turned into a claim about a specific food.

| Evidence | What it can help answer | Main caution |
|---|---|---|
| Tooth and jaw shape | What foods an animal could process and how its feeding mechanics worked | Shape reflects ancestry as well as adaptation and does not necessarily reveal the foods eaten most often. |
| Microscopic pits and scratches | Food mechanical properties and clues to recent feeding behavior | Interpretation depends on comparative baselines and can reflect more than a simple food category. |
| Carbon-isotope chemistry | Broad plant-resource patterns and aspects of past environments | Calibration varies among animals; a single enrichment value should not be applied universally. |
| Preserved gut contents | Direct evidence of particular consumed material, when preservation makes it available | Exceptional rather than routine evidence; it cannot be expected for most fossils. |
The most defensible reconstruction looks for agreement among methods while keeping each method’s limits visible. A shape may suggest capability, wear can indicate texture-related interactions, and isotopes can suggest broad resource patterns. If one clue points in a different direction, researchers need to consider whether the difference reflects distinct questions, biological calibration, preservation, or the limits of the sample instead of forcing a single answer.
Preserved gut contents, when they are available, can provide a more direct clue to particular consumed material. But such evidence depends on exceptional preservation and is not something researchers can expect to find for most fossils. For that reason, tooth form, wear, and isotope chemistry are valuable complementary tools: together they can build a supported interpretation even when no direct remains of a meal survive.

If the question is how an animal’s teeth and jaw could process food, morphology is relevant. If the question is what kinds of mechanical interactions left marks during the animal’s life, microwear is relevant. If the question concerns broad plant resources or aspects of past environments, carbon-isotope chemistry can contribute. Those clues can converge, but one method should not be made to answer a question it cannot resolve.

What the evidence cannot establish on its own
- An exact menu: tooth form and microwear are not usually specific enough to name every food consumed.
- A whole species’ diet from a small sample: a study’s conclusion applies to the teeth, animals, and comparison groups examined.
- A universal isotope correction: animal size and digestive-tract differences can affect enrichment.
- That every tooth mark came from food: microwear records interactions with food and other abrasives, so interpretation requires context.
Quantitative dental microwear analysis has also been applied to hadrosaurid dinosaurs to test hypotheses about feeding and jaw mechanics. That demonstrates the method’s use beyond hominins, but it does not by itself justify assigning a particular diet to those dinosaurs. The hadrosaurid study is an example of using microwear to test feeding hypotheses, not a basis for claiming an exact menu from an abstract alone.
The dinosaur example illustrates both the reach and the boundary of the method: quantitative microwear analysis is not limited to early human relatives, and it can be used to test ideas about feeding and jaw mechanics in hadrosaurids. However, knowing that a study tested those hypotheses is not the same as knowing its dietary conclusion. Without support for a specific finding, the responsible takeaway is simply that the method has been applied beyond hominins.
Frequently Asked Questions
How can scientists tell what an extinct animal ate from its teeth?
They combine several clues: tooth and jaw shape suggest feeding capability, microscopic pits and scratches offer evidence about food texture and use, and carbon-isotope ratios can indicate broad plant-resource patterns. These are indirect clues, so conclusions are strongest when independent evidence and suitable comparisons agree.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteCan fossil teeth reveal an animal’s exact menu?
Usually not. Tooth shape and microwear can suggest what an animal could process or what mechanical properties it encountered, but they rarely identify every food species it ate. Preserved gut contents can provide direct evidence of particular material, but that kind of preservation is exceptional.
What do pits and scratches on fossil teeth mean?
Microscopic pits commonly fit interactions with harder, brittle items, while scratches on shearing surfaces can indicate tougher foods. Intermediate patterns may fit mixed diets. Researchers compare patterns with reference samples, and the marks can reflect other abrasives as well as food.
What can carbon isotopes tell scientists about ancient diets?
Carbon-isotope ratios in fossil tissues can help identify broad plant-resource patterns, such as whether an herbivore relied more on grasses or leaves, and can contribute to environmental reconstruction. Interpretation depends on biological and environmental context, including appropriate calibration for the animal.
Why can’t scientists use one isotope correction for every herbivore?
Research described by AMNH found isotope-enrichment values differed among modern sloth species and extinct Mylodon. Enrichment generally grew with body size and also depended on digestive-tract makeup, so a value suited to one animal should not automatically be applied to another.
The Bottom Line
Fossil teeth can reveal feeding capability, food-related wear, and—when isotope evidence is available—broad resource patterns. None is a complete menu. Researchers get the most reliable picture by combining independent clues, comparing them with appropriate baselines, and keeping conclusions within the limits of the sample.
