Fossil bite marks are direct evidence that teeth contacted bone. When their shape, position and geological context fit a feeding explanation, they show that an animal worked on a carcass—sometimes revealing which bones or tissues it targeted. They can document feeding interactions that skeletons alone cannot preserve.

They do not, by themselves, identify the biter or prove that the bitten dinosaur was killed during an attack. The strongest conclusions come from separating the physical trace from the behavioral interpretation, then testing that interpretation against anatomy, timing, associated fossils and the way an entire bone assemblage was collected.

What fossil bite marks reveal about dinosaur behavior

They preserve a feeding interaction

A puncture, groove, striation or drag trace on fossil bone records tooth-to-bone contact. That is unusually direct behavioral evidence: muscles, teeth and a carcass interacted before burial, and part of that interaction survived as a modification of the bone. In a skeleton, scientists can infer diet from tooth shape or jaw mechanics; a bite trace adds evidence that an animal actually engaged with a particular carcass or bone.

The trace still represents only one moment. It does not preserve the whole encounter, the number of animals present, or what happened immediately before and after the bite. A mark can show feeding without showing whether the feeder was the animal that caused death.

They show which parts of a carcass received attention

Location matters as much as appearance. Marks concentrated on particular bones can indicate which portions of a carcass remained accessible or were preferentially exploited. A pattern of traces across a skeleton may suggest repeated access to a large body, while isolated marks may represent a brief feeding contact. Researchers therefore record the exact bone, surface and anatomical region rather than treating every mark as an interchangeable “bite.”

They preserve aspects of feeding mechanics

Different trace forms carry different mechanical information. Punctures indicate concentrated force; grooves and striations can record a tooth moving across bone; drag marks may preserve movement during a pull or scrape; and tooth wear can show that a tooth itself contacted hard material. These observations help reconstruct how a feeder handled bone, but the behavioral label—feeding, scavenging, prey selection or something else—remains an interpretation that must fit the broader context.

How paleontologists analyze a suspected bite mark

Scientists do not start by naming a dinosaur. They first document what is physically preserved, then build increasingly cautious interpretations.

  1. Describe the modification. They record whether the feature is a puncture, groove, striation, drag trace, chipped area or another form of damage. Surface preservation, breakage and weathering are noted because a poorly preserved feature can mimic a tooth mark.
  2. Map its position. The bone, anatomical region, surface and orientation are recorded. A mark on a limb bone may carry a different behavioral implication from one on a vertebra or a skull element.
  3. Assess timing. Researchers look for evidence that damage occurred while the bone still had fresh tissue properties, after burial, or after fossilization. Healed damage indicates that an animal survived the injury; an unhealed or perimortem modification occurred near the time of death. Neither observation alone identifies the attacker.
  4. Compare the trace with plausible teeth. Shape, repeated striations and tooth wear are compared with the teeth of animals known from the same formation. Several carnivores may have been present, and unrelated teeth can leave convergent-looking marks, so a proposed maker is usually expressed as a candidate rather than a certainty.
  5. Test alternative causes. Weathering, trampling, sediment abrasion, cracking and preparation damage must be considered. The available evidence does not establish a single universal diagnostic protocol that distinguishes every bite from every non-bite modification; confidence depends on the particular specimen and its preservation.
  6. Place the specimen in its assemblage. The frequency and distribution of marks across a quarry can reveal feeding pressure or carcass use, provided the sampling and collection history is understood.

Can scientists tell which dinosaur made a bite mark?

Sometimes they can narrow the possibilities, but a species-level identification is often not possible. The same bone can have been accessible to several carnivores, and a small subset of traces may preserve the details needed for attribution. A convincing match requires both a trace form compatible with a tooth and a plausible animal in the same place and time.

Example What is preserved Behavioral interpretation Limit on attribution
Mygatt-Moore Quarry, PLOS ONE (2020) At least one bite mark on 28.927% of observed bones in the sampled assemblage Frequent feeding or scavenging activity; the paper discusses possible Allosaurus cannibalism The percentage applies only to that sampled assemblage, and assigning individual traces to a particular actor is difficult
Morrison Formation survey, PeerJ (2023) Theropod bite traces cataloged on 68 sauropod bones Theropods fed on juvenile sauropods and likely scavenged large sauropod carcasses Multiple credible biters could have been present, making individual traces difficult to assign
Juvenile Centrosaurus frill, PLOS ONE (2018) Feeding traces on a juvenile frill A small-bodied theropod is the strongest proposed feeder The trace maker remains uncertain; the candidate is not a definitive identification
Junggar Basin, The Science of Nature (2020) Mammalian feeding traces on Late Jurassic dinosaur bone Gnawing at soft tissue still attached to carcasses; presented as the oldest direct fossil evidence of mammalian feeding behavior The marks need not have been made by a dinosaur at all

The Mygatt-Moore study illustrates why a high frequency does not solve the attribution problem. A quarry can record substantial feeding activity while leaving too little diagnostic information to decide which carnivore made each mark. Its discussion of possible cannibalism is a study-specific interpretation, not evidence that all Allosaurus populations cannibalized.

Do bite marks prove that a dinosaur was hunted?

No. They prove contact between teeth and bone, and they can support a feeding interpretation, but they generally cannot distinguish a kill from a carcass discovered after death.

Evidence that would support an attack near death

Perimortem damage, a pattern of injuries consistent with an encounter, and traces located where flesh would have been accessible can strengthen an argument for active predation. Healed wounds show that an animal survived an earlier attack or other injury, so they are evidence of interaction but not proof of the event that ultimately caused death.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Evidence consistent with scavenging

Marks made after death, repeated access to exposed bones and a lack of injuries showing an attack can fit carcass scavenging. In the Morrison Formation survey, the cataloged sauropod traces were not accompanied by evidence of perimortem bites or healed wounds. The authors interpreted the overall pattern as consistent with theropods scavenging large sauropod carcasses, while also documenting feeding on juvenile sauropods. “Consistent with” is important: the traces support that explanation but do not reconstruct every individual feeding event.

What the major fossil examples show

Mygatt-Moore Quarry: an unusually high observed frequency

The 2020 PLOS ONE study reported that 28.927% of observed bones in the Mygatt-Moore Quarry assemblage carried at least one bite mark. This is a result for the bones examined in that assemblage, not a universal rate for dinosaurs. The paper described the frequency as unusually high compared with other dinosaur-dominated assemblages and examined feeding, scavenging and possible cannibalism as explanations.

The number is useful because it measures how much of one sampled community bears evidence of tooth contact. It is not a direct measure of how often dinosaurs were attacked, how many carcasses were eaten, or how many bites occurred. One bone can carry multiple marks, while an unmarked bone may simply have escaped the relevant feeding phase or the collection process.

Morrison Formation sauropods: feeding on very large carcasses

A 2023 PeerJ survey of Morrison Formation material cataloged 68 sauropod bones with theropod bite traces. The documented bones include evidence interpreted as feeding on juvenile sauropods and likely scavenging of large sauropod carcasses. The scale of sauropod bodies makes this pattern important for understanding how theropods used carcasses that could not be consumed in a single brief encounter.

Theropod tooth wear adds another line of evidence about contact with hard material, but it does not automatically identify the exact individual that made a mark. Where several carnivores were plausible, the study treated attribution as difficult rather than forcing a species name.

Juvenile Centrosaurus: a frill as a feeding surface

The PLOS ONE case from 2018 concerns feeding traces on the frill of a juvenile Centrosaurus. A small-bodied theropod was considered the strongest candidate for the marks, yet the trace-maker identity remained uncertain. The specimen demonstrates why location can matter: a frill is a distinctive, relatively thin part of the skeleton, and damage there can reveal that a feeder reached a particular portion of a carcass without proving which carnivore did so.

Junggar Basin: mammals also left feeding traces

A 2020 study in The Science of Nature reported mammalian feeding traces on Late Jurassic dinosaur bone from the Junggar Basin. The authors interpreted the marks as gnawing on soft tissue still attached to carcasses and presented them as the oldest direct evidence of mammalian feeding behavior in the fossil record. This example widens the question beyond dinosaurs: a mark on dinosaur bone records the feeder’s action, not necessarily the identity of the animal that died.

How common are bite marks in a fossil assemblage?

A quarry-wide percentage can help compare feeding pressure and ecosystem interaction, but only when the samples were assembled in comparable ways. Collection methods influence which bones are found, retained and studied. Attractive or complete specimens may be preferentially collected, while heavily damaged fragments can be ignored; either choice changes the apparent frequency of marks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Sampling unit: clarify whether the percentage is based on bones, specimens, fragments or a different unit.
  • Preservation: determine whether surfaces capable of retaining marks survived equally across the assemblage.
  • Collection history: ask whether field teams collected systematically or selected conspicuous specimens.
  • Bone representation: check whether some skeletal regions are overrepresented and therefore dominate the result.
  • Counting rule: distinguish “at least one mark” from the total number of individual traces.

For these reasons, the Mygatt-Moore value should not be converted into a general probability that any dinosaur bone will bear a bite mark.

How to separate observation from interpretation

Level of statement Example wording What it supports
Physical observation “A striated groove occurs on the bone surface.” A preserved modification requiring explanation
Anatomical context “The marks cluster on a frill, limb element or sauropod bone.” Which carcass region was accessible or targeted
Process interpretation “The pattern is consistent with tooth contact during feeding.” A feeding interaction, with stated uncertainty
Behavioral inference “The assemblage fits scavenging of a large carcass.” A broader ecological scenario, not a complete scene
Actor attribution “A small-bodied theropod is the strongest candidate.” A ranked possibility, not automatic species identification

This wording discipline prevents a common error: turning a trace that demonstrates feeding into a claim that a named predator made a kill. The mark is the evidence; the behavioral story must remain proportional to what the bone preserves.

What fossil bite marks cannot tell you on their own

  • They cannot usually identify a species without a distinctive trace and a tightly constrained list of possible biters.
  • They cannot establish that the bitten animal was killed by the biter.
  • They cannot provide a complete sequence of feeding, movement and burial.
  • They cannot be generalized from one quarry to all dinosaurs without comparable sampling.
  • They cannot guarantee a dinosaur origin for the trace; mammals and other animals could feed on dinosaur carcasses.
  • They cannot turn an interpretation such as possible cannibalism into a universal behavioral rule.

A practical checklist for reading a bite-mark claim

  1. Identify exactly what is preserved: punctures, grooves, striations, drag marks, tooth wear or another modification.
  2. Note the bone and anatomical location, not just the animal’s name.
  3. Ask whether the damage is healed, unhealed, perimortem or post-burial.
  4. Check which potential feeders lived in the same formation and whether more than one is plausible.
  5. Look for the authors’ confidence level: “identified,” “likely,” “strongest candidate” and “consistent with” carry different meanings.
  6. For frequency claims, verify how bones were sampled and counted.
  7. Keep predation and scavenging separate unless the evidence specifically supports both.

Used this way, fossil bite marks are powerful but bounded evidence. They make otherwise invisible feeding interactions visible, reveal how carcasses were used and sometimes expose interactions involving mammals as well as dinosaurs. Their greatest value comes from combining the trace’s form and location with careful statements about timing, sampling and uncertainty.
