For a data-center room containing lithium-ion UPS batteries, an automatic sprinkler system is the most defensible starting point. A clean-agent or other gaseous system may be added for flame control or accepted as an alternative only when the adopted code, the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ), and test evidence support that specific design. A gaseous agent can knock down visible flames without cooling cells or stopping thermal runaway, so the label “battery room” is not enough to select an agent.

The correct system depends on battery chemistry, stored energy, cabinet and rack arrangement, room construction, ventilation, detection, the code edition adopted locally, and evidence from testing the actual hazard. Suppression must be designed with gas detection, thermal-runaway detection, ventilation shutdown, emergency power controls and responder procedures rather than treated as an isolated equipment choice.

Start with the adopted code and the room’s classification

Before choosing hardware, establish which rules are legally applicable. Ask the AHJ which editions of the fire code and referenced standards govern the project, and whether local amendments change the requirements. Model codes are not automatically law in every jurisdiction.

That technology- and configuration-sensitive approach matters in a UPS room. A lithium-ion cabinet with one arrangement of modules, ventilation and spacing is not automatically equivalent to another cabinet with different cell chemistry, energy capacity or enclosure construction. Requirements and design evidence must match the installation being approved.

NFPA 75: information-technology equipment areas

NFPA 75 is the Standard for the Fire Protection of Information Technology Equipment; NFPA listed its 2024 edition as current in the cited material. It addresses protection of IT equipment and areas from fire and associated smoke, corrosion, heat and water effects. A battery room serving a data center may therefore involve both IT-equipment provisions and stationary-energy-storage provisions. The project team must determine how the adopted code classifies the room and which sections apply.

International Fire Code pathway

The 2024 International Fire Code (IFC) provisions for electrochemical energy-storage systems reference NFPA 855. The exact obligations depend on the installation category and on whether that IFC edition, or a locally amended version, has been adopted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate 2024 IFC provisions for indoor lithium-ion and lithium-metal battery storage areas allow automatic sprinklers or an approved alternative suppression system. The design basis must be documented in an approved technical opinion and report addressing fire and explosion risks, with relevant full-scale testing or another approved method showing that the design is sufficient. Those storage-area provisions should not automatically be assumed to govern every UPS room; confirm the use classification and applicable sections with the AHJ.

Why water-based sprinklers are the baseline to investigate first

Water removes heat. That is the central reason sprinkler protection is a strong baseline for lithium-ion UPS rooms: cooling can help limit propagation beyond simply extinguishing flames in the room air.

An NFPA committee report reproduces proposed text stating that rooms containing lithium-ion battery UPS systems shall have an automatic sprinkler system installed in accordance with NFPA 1. The report is committee material, not proof of the exact requirement in the currently issued NFPA 75 edition. Use it as an indication of the direction of the technical discussion, then verify the published standard and locally adopted code before treating sprinklers as mandatory.

NFPA guidance reproduced in committee material also states: “Water is considered the preferred agent for suppressing lithium-ion battery fires.” The statement is guidance in the context of lithium-ion batteries, not a universal prescription for every battery chemistry or every room. Cabinet geometry can prevent water from reaching the cell of origin, so sprinkler layout, cabinet construction and fire-test evidence still matter.

What sprinklers can and cannot do

  • Cooling: Water provides a cooling mechanism that gaseous agents do not.
  • Propagation control: Properly designed discharge can help limit heating of adjacent modules, racks or cabinets, subject to the actual layout and test basis.
  • Equipment consequences: Water can affect energized electrical equipment and may create smoke, corrosion or outage concerns. Those consequences must be addressed in the facility’s continuity and shutdown plan, not used to assume that a gas-only design is automatically safer.
  • Access limitations: Enclosures, tight module spacing and obstructions can reduce water penetration. The design should document how the discharge pattern addresses those limitations.

Where clean-agent or other gaseous systems fit

A clean-agent or other gaseous system can be considered as supplementary protection or as an approved alternative where the adopted code permits it and the system is designed and approved for the actual battery hazard. It is not a universal substitute for sprinklers.

Dry chemicals, carbon dioxide and inert gases can extinguish visible flames without necessarily cooling cells or stopping thermal runaway. A battery may continue generating heat and flammable gases after the flame disappears. If the enclosure is reopened or ventilation resumes too soon, those gases can support re-ignition or create an explosion hazard.

Conditions for a defensible gaseous design

  • Suitable enclosure: The room or cabinet must hold the design concentration for the required period. Leakage, door operation, cable penetrations and pressure relief must be evaluated.
  • Ventilation control: Fans, dampers and exhaust paths need an intentional shutdown or control sequence so the agent is not immediately diluted.
  • Gas and thermal detection: Detection should identify off-gassing or abnormal temperature before a visible flame develops, and alarms should initiate the approved shutdown and response sequence.
  • Hold time and re-entry: The design must specify concentration hold time, atmospheric checks and safe re-entry procedures. A room that appears clear of flame is not necessarily safe.
  • Battery-specific evidence: Approval should rely on testing or an approved engineering analysis for the actual chemistry, energy, cabinet arrangement and room volume.

Gaseous protection may reduce water exposure to adjacent IT equipment, but that benefit does not demonstrate control of cell-level thermal runaway. The authority approving the alternative should see the complete hazard analysis, not only the agent manufacturer’s flame-extinguishing data.

Comparing candidate approaches

Approach Primary strength Critical limitation or condition Typical decision position
Automatic sprinklers Provides water cooling and is the strongest baseline to investigate for lithium-ion UPS rooms. Cabinet layouts may obstruct water; water can affect electrical equipment and create smoke, corrosion and outage consequences. Start here unless the adopted code and project evidence support another approach.
Clean-agent or inert-gas suppression Can suppress visible flame with little or no liquid discharge to nearby IT equipment. Does not inherently cool cells or stop thermal runaway; requires enclosure integrity, ventilation shutdown, concentration hold time and controlled re-entry. Use as supplementary protection or as an AHJ-approved alternative tied to battery-specific evidence.
Other approved alternative suppression May fit a particular installation when a documented technical opinion and report demonstrates adequate fire and explosion protection. Acceptance depends on the adopted code, installation category and relevant full-scale testing or another approved method. Consider only after classification, engineering documentation and AHJ review.

A step-by-step selection and approval process

  1. Inventory the hazard. Record battery chemistry, manufacturer and model, nominal and maximum stored energy, number of cabinets, module arrangement, rack clearances, enclosure ratings and whether batteries can be serviced while energized.
  2. Classify the room. Determine whether it is an IT-equipment area, an electrochemical energy-storage installation, an indoor battery-storage area or another code category. Document adjacent rooms, occupancy, fire separations and egress.
  3. Confirm adopted editions. Obtain the jurisdiction’s adopted fire code, amendments and referenced editions of NFPA 855, NFPA 75 and NFPA 1. Ask the AHJ in writing which provisions apply to the UPS room.
  4. Establish the design basis. For sprinklers, document the applicable installation standard, discharge arrangement, obstructions and water-supply assumptions. For a gaseous or other alternative system, document enclosure volume, concentration, hold time, ventilation controls, detection logic and the method used to demonstrate performance.
  5. Match evidence to the installation. Use full-scale fire testing or another approval method that represents the actual chemistry, stored energy, cabinet geometry, spacing and room or enclosure. Do not transfer a density, agent concentration or test result from an unrelated battery installation.
  6. Integrate controls. Define alarm thresholds, automatic shutdowns, ventilation and damper commands, electrical isolation, notification, remote monitoring and manual release or abort functions. Ensure the sequence is coordinated with the data center’s uninterruptible-power and generator controls.
  7. Submit for AHJ approval. Provide plans, calculations, test reports, technical opinions where required, cause-and-effect matrices, commissioning procedures and maintenance information. Approval should cover the complete protection strategy, not just the suppression cylinder or valve.
  8. Commission and maintain. Test detection, alarms, interlocks, dampers, agent concentration where applicable, sprinkler waterflow supervision and emergency procedures. Reassess the design after battery chemistry, cabinet count, room volume or ventilation changes.

Detection, ventilation and response are part of suppression

NFPA 855’s scope places suppression alongside detection, gas management, exhaust ventilation, explosion control and thermal-runaway measures. That combination reflects how lithium-ion incidents develop: abnormal heating and off-gassing can precede visible flame, and a suppression discharge does not by itself guarantee that heat generation or flammable gas production has stopped.

Detection and alarm logic

Use a documented sequence that identifies abnormal temperature, smoke or gas conditions and distinguishes an incipient event from a confirmed fire where the code and design permit staged actions. Alarms should reach the control room and responders, with clear indication of which cabinet or room initiated the signal.

Ventilation and dampers

For gaseous systems, ventilation shutdown and damper closure are essential to concentration hold time. For any system, exhaust and pressure-relief decisions must account for flammable gases and responder exposure. The design should state when ventilation is stopped, when it may be restarted and what atmospheric checks are required.

Emergency response and re-entry

Procedures should address electrical isolation, remote operations, evacuation, fire-department notification, atmospheric monitoring, cooling or overhaul, and the possibility of re-ignition. Do not authorize re-entry solely because flames are no longer visible.

Questions to put to the fire-protection engineer and AHJ

  • Which code edition and local amendments classify this UPS room?
  • Does the jurisdiction apply NFPA 855, NFPA 75, NFPA 1, the IFC provisions for electrochemical systems, or a combination?
  • Is automatic sprinkler protection required, or can an alternative be approved for this installation category?
  • What test evidence represents the installed battery chemistry, energy, cabinet arrangement and room volume?
  • How will the design cool cells and control propagation after visible flame is suppressed?
  • What are the ventilation shutdown, damper, gas-detection, hold-time and re-entry requirements?
  • How are alarms, electrical isolation, remote shutdown and fire-department notification coordinated?
  • What changes to battery cabinets, room volume or ventilation would require a new hazard review?

For most lithium-ion UPS rooms, investigate an automatic sprinkler system first, then evaluate any gaseous or other alternative against the same code, cooling, test-evidence and operational criteria. A final selection is defensible only when the adopted rules, the actual battery installation and the complete detection-and-response strategy all align.
