There is no single safest filament for every part inside a computer. For a functional component near electronics, start with a product that has a specific flame-retardant rating—such as a documented PC-FR, PETG V0 or PC-ABS FR grade—then verify its heat-deflection data, mechanical strength, printer requirements and test scope against the exact location in your computer.
“PC” here means a personal computer. The safest choice depends on whether the part is a cable guide, fan duct, sensor mount or load-bearing bracket, how hot the mounting point becomes during sustained workloads, and whether the part could interfere with airflow or exposed electrical contacts.
What “safe” means inside a computer
Filament safety is not one property. A part inside a PC must remain dimensionally stable, resist ignition or flame spread where required, perform its mechanical job and avoid creating electrical or airflow hazards. The material also has a separate printing-environment risk related to particles, volatile compounds and additives.
Flame resistance is not heat resistance
A UL 94 V-0 result describes flame behavior under a defined laboratory method. It does not tell you that a printed bracket will never soften at a lower temperature. Heat-deflection temperature (HDT) is measured under a stated load and indicates when a specimen deforms; it is not a universal maximum service temperature. A material can have useful flame behavior yet be unsuitable for a hot, continuously loaded mount, or tolerate heat while lacking a documented flame rating.

A material rating does not certify your finished part
Ratings generally apply to specified specimens, thicknesses, colors and test conditions. Printed wall thickness, layer orientation, infill, voids, geometry and post-processing can change performance. A product page claiming V-0 does not automatically certify every shape printed from that spool, nor does it certify installation in a particular computer. Treat the certificate or test report as a starting specification and check its scope.
Best starting candidates
The following products have documented evidence in the manufacturers’ or standards-related material information. They are examples for comparison, not a guarantee that any one is suitable for your computer.
| Candidate | Documented evidence | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| ELEGOO PC-FR | The manufacturer states that its PC-FR is certified to UL 94-2023 V-0 and positions it for electronics and mechanical applications. | An enclosed printer is required; the manufacturer advises drying and recommends a hardened-steel nozzle of 0.4 mm or larger. Verify the current datasheet and certificate scope. No HDT value was established in the reviewed product information. |
| Prusament PETG V0 | Prusa says the product was tested under IEC 60695-11-10 and achieved UL 94 V0 for both colors, with electronic housings and insulation parts among its intended uses. | PETG is hygroscopic. Prusa recommends drying for six hours at 55°C when the filament cannot be kept dry. |
| UltiMaker Method PC-ABS FR | UltiMaker identifies a UL-94 V0 rating and heat deflection of 104°C for this Method-series material. | It is a Method-series material. Confirm printer compatibility and the test conditions behind the 104°C figure before designing a part around it. |
| FormFutura Premium PETG Flame Retardant | The technical data sheet issued January 15, 2025 reports UL 94 V0-equivalent testing and HDT B of 63°C at 0.45 MPa. | The manufacturer explicitly says it is not certified by Underwriters Laboratories and has no UL number. Describe this as an equivalent laboratory result, not UL certification. |
These figures are product-specific. They are not statistics about computer failures and do not establish a universal safe temperature for parts inside PCs.
How to choose for the actual part
1. Measure the installation point
Measure the temperature where the part will sit while the computer performs its heaviest realistic workload. Idle temperature is not enough: graphics workloads, sustained CPU rendering and restricted airflow can produce a different result. Record the highest stable temperature and whether the part is continuously loaded. The reviewed material information does not provide a universal internal-PC temperature limit, so your measurement must be compared with the exact filament datasheet.

2. Define the mechanical job
Classify the part before choosing plastic:
- Light-duty routing: a cable comb or tie guide may need dimensional stability and adequate toughness but little structural strength.
- Air-management: a fan duct or shroud must hold its shape, maintain clearance and avoid obstructing the fan or heatsink.
- Positioning: a sensor or small electronics mount may need accurate fit and electrical clearance.
- Structural loading: a bracket supporting a radiator, pump, drive or heavy cable bundle needs strength, creep resistance and impact tolerance in the printed orientation.
Do not select a filament solely because its polymer name sounds familiar. Ordinary PC, PETG, ABS, ASA and PLA family labels do not establish a particular flame rating or thermal capability for a specific spool.
3. Compare heat-deflection data correctly
Read the HDT method and load alongside the number. FormFutura’s 63°C value is HDT B at 0.45 MPa; it should not be compared as if it were a no-load service limit. UltiMaker’s 104°C figure is tied to its Method-series PC-ABS FR material and its own test conditions. If a datasheet omits HDT, mark it as not stated rather than substituting a value from another brand or from the generic polymer family.
4. Check flame-test scope
Look for the exact standard, rating, specimen thickness, color and certificate holder. Prusament PETG V0’s reported V0 result applies to both listed colors after IEC 60695-11-10 testing. The PC-FR claim from ELEGOO is stated as UL 94-2023 V-0. FormFutura’s sheet distinguishes an equivalent test from UL certification. Those distinctions matter when a project, employer or safety review requires a traceable certification.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems5. Verify printer and drying requirements
A material can be appropriate on paper but impossible to print reliably on your machine. Confirm nozzle temperature range, heated-bed requirements, enclosure requirement, build-surface compatibility and maximum chamber temperature. PC-FR manufacturer guidance calls for an enclosed printer and a hardened-steel nozzle of at least 0.4 mm. PETG V0 requires moisture control; if it cannot be stored dry, Prusa recommends six hours at 55°C. Wet filament can produce weak, porous or dimensionally inaccurate parts even when the dry material has a useful rating.

6. Design for clearance and airflow
Keep the printed part away from exposed conductors, connector contacts and moving fan blades. Provide clearance around heatsinks, vents and cable bends. A flame-retardant filament does not make it acceptable to block an intake, trap dust against a heat source or allow a loose part to fall into a fan. If the design could contact a circuit board, use a material datasheet that addresses electrical insulation or other required properties; do not assume a carbon-fiber-filled filament is electrically insulating.
PLA, ordinary PETG, ABS and ASA: when they are not enough
Common materials are often easier to print than engineering or flame-retardant grades. Prusa’s general filament guide lists their broad printer conditions, but a family guide cannot assign a flame rating to every commercial product.
PLA
PLA can be convenient for a cool, lightly loaded prototype or a temporary cable guide. Ease of printing does not prove that it will retain shape near a warm graphics card, voltage-regulator heatsink or exhaust path. Unless the exact PLA product supplies suitable thermal and flame data, do not treat ordinary PLA as a safety choice for a heat-exposed permanent part.
Ordinary PETG
PETG generally offers more temperature tolerance and toughness than PLA in many desktop-printing setups, but ordinary PETG is not automatically flame retardant. The FormFutura FR PETG example demonstrates why exact product data matters: its sheet gives both a flame-test result and an HDT under a stated load, while a generic PETG label gives neither.

ABS and ASA
ABS and ASA can be useful engineering plastics, yet polymer family names do not establish UL 94 behavior for a particular formulation. Their printing fumes, shrinkage, enclosure needs and mechanical properties also vary by product. Use them only when the manufacturer supplies data that matches your thermal, flame and mechanical requirements.
Ordinary polycarbonate
Polycarbonate is often selected for strength and heat resistance, but “PC” on a spool is not the same as a documented PC-FR grade. Confirm flame behavior, HDT, print conditions and electrical requirements from the exact product documentation.
A practical selection procedure
- Document the part: write down its location, dimensions, load, nearby heat sources, moving components and required clearances.
- Measure temperature: monitor the mounting point during a sustained workload and record the highest stable reading.
- Shortlist documented grades: start with PC-FR, PETG V0 or PC-ABS FR products whose datasheets state the relevant flame test and thermal data.
- Check the rating scope: verify specimen thickness, orientation or color limitations, certificate number and whether the result is a certification or an equivalent test.
- Check machine fit: confirm enclosure, nozzle, bed, chamber and drying requirements before buying filament.
- Design conservatively: increase wall thickness where appropriate, avoid unsupported overhangs near fans, maintain electrical clearance and prevent the part from becoming a loose object.
- Print and inspect: dry the filament as directed, use the manufacturer’s process window, inspect for delamination and voids, and verify fit before installing the part.
- Recheck under load: after installation, confirm that the part remains clear of fans and conductors and does not deform during the same workload used for temperature measurement.
Printing-environment safety
The finished part’s behavior inside a computer is separate from the hazards of making it. UL 200B, dated May 8, 2023, discusses particle and VOC emissions from material-extrusion printing and directs users to the specific material safety data sheet (SDS). Flame-retardant formulations can contain additives with their own health hazards.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Read the exact filament SDS, not just a generic polymer SDS.
- Use the ventilation, enclosure and temperature controls specified for that material and printer.
- Do not infer that a printed part is toxic or safe merely because the filament is flame retardant; the SDS addresses the composition and printing exposure.
- Keep the printer away from occupied sleeping or working areas when the material instructions call for controlled ventilation.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Choosing by polymer name alone
Problem: assuming every PETG, PC or ABS spool has the same flame and heat performance. Correction: use the exact product datasheet and certificate scope.
Best Value
- High Performance & Strength: PETG filament combines the strengths of PLA and ABS. It offers low shrinkage, high impact resistance, excellent temperature resistance, and high elongation at break, models can bend repeatedly and remain firm and sturdy
- High Transparent & Glossy: PETG has a high degree of transparency. The finished product has a fine surface with exquisite details. This makes PETG material ideal for making transparent parts and models, such as lampshades, display boxes, and more
- Non-toxic Material: Creality CR-PETG 3D printing filament has excellent wether resistance and chemical resistance, no odor, and non-toxic, green environmental protection
- Wide Compatible: CR-PETG filament is wildly used in FDM 3D printers on the market.Compatible with most popular 3D printers such as MK3, Creality Ender series/CR series, ELEGOO, Anycubic, and more
- Creality Support: Creality provides 12-month & 24 hours after-sales service. Note: Please place this product in a dry and ventilated environment, not in an environment of high temperature, sunny or humid conditions
Calling an equivalent test “UL-certified”
Problem: describing FormFutura’s reported equivalent V0 laboratory result as a UL certification. Correction: state that the manufacturer reports an equivalent test and no UL number.
Using HDT as a universal operating limit
Problem: treating 63°C or 104°C as a guaranteed service temperature for every geometry. Correction: retain the test load and method, then apply a design margin to your measured temperature and actual load.
Assuming a V-0 spool certifies the printed assembly
Problem: overlooking wall thickness, print orientation, infill and hardware. Correction: treat the rating as material evidence and validate the finished design.

Problem: printing hygroscopic PETG or PC after it has absorbed water. Correction: follow the product’s drying and storage instructions; Prusa’s PETG V0 guidance specifies six hours at 55°C when dry storage is not maintained.
Which option is the safest default?
For a permanent functional part near computer electronics, a specifically documented flame-retardant grade is a more defensible starting point than ordinary PLA, PETG, ABS, ASA or generic polycarbonate. Choose PC-FR when its printer requirements and thermal data fit the measured location; consider PETG V0 where its documented rating, moisture control and mechanical performance are sufficient; and consider PC-ABS FR when the Method-series material and printer are compatible and its 104°C heat-deflection figure matches the application.
Do not rank these products by a single number. The correct decision combines flame-test scope, HDT under its stated load, strength and impact needs, measured PC temperature, print reliability, drying, ventilation and the consequences of a failed part.
Bottom line
The safest filament is the exact, documented flame-retardant product that remains stable at your measured installation temperature and performs the part’s mechanical and electrical-clearance duties. A product-level V-0 claim is useful evidence, not blanket certification of every printed geometry or computer installation. Measure first, compare the complete datasheet, print according to the material instructions and keep the finished part clear of heat sources, conductors and airflow paths.
