FII/FPI and DII data shows how much these institutional groups bought, sold and bought or sold net in a specified market segment. Net value is calculated as buy value minus sell value: a positive number means purchases exceeded sales, while a negative number means sales exceeded purchases. The figures are useful clues about liquidity, sentiment and positioning, but they are not a mechanical forecast of where the Nifty or Sensex will move next.
To use the data correctly, first confirm the date, exchange coverage and segment, then read gross purchases, gross sales and net value together. Treat late-day figures as provisional, compare several sessions rather than one number, and test the flow signal against breadth, sectors, volatility, currency, interest rates, earnings and news.
What FII/FPI and DII data actually measures
Institutional-flow tables are activity summaries. They total the value of trades attributed to two broad investor groups within the report’s stated scope.

“FII” is the older term commonly used in market commentary. Official Indian market reporting increasingly uses FPI, or foreign portfolio investor. This group consists of investors based outside India that are registered to invest in Indian securities under the applicable regulatory framework. Their decisions can be influenced by global interest rates, the US dollar, emerging-market allocations, geopolitical risk, commodity prices, country risk and the relative valuation of Indian shares. Those are tendencies, not rules: an individual foreign fund can have a very different mandate and time horizon from the aggregate group.

Domestic institutional investors
DII means domestic institutional investor. The category covers Indian institutions such as mutual funds, insurance companies, pension-related pools and other regulated domestic investors reported within the relevant market data. Domestic flows are often discussed as being more connected to local savings, domestic policy, Indian earnings and investor subscriptions, but the aggregate also contains institutions with different objectives, liquidity needs and portfolio constraints.
Buy value, sell value and net value
Every table should be read across three related fields:
- Buy value: the rupee value of purchases attributed to the group in the stated scope.
- Sell value: the rupee value of sales attributed to the group in that same scope.
- Net value: buy value minus sell value. A positive result is net buying; a negative result is net selling.
Net value is a convenient summary, not a replacement for the two gross columns. Two sessions can have the same net buying figure but very different turnover and therefore different information about trading intensity. A small positive net number may result from light trading, while a large buy value and large sell value that nearly offset can indicate substantial repositioning.

The report’s scope controls what the number means
NSE publishes an NSE capital-market report and a combined report covering trades executed on the BSE, NSE and MSEI. The combined report is collated from FII/FPI and DII trades across those three exchanges. Before comparing dates, check whether you are looking at NSE only or the combined BSE/NSE/MSEI series. Also check whether the selected report is for the cash or another segment. A number from one segment cannot safely be compared with a number from a differently defined segment.
Why institutional flows can affect Nifty and Sensex without determining them
Large institutions place orders that can change demand and supply at the margin. If buying is concentrated in heavily weighted index constituents, it can support index prices; selling in those constituents can add pressure. Domestic buying can also absorb part of foreign selling, reducing the immediate effect of an overseas outflow. The market impact depends on order timing, liquidity, stock selection, derivatives hedges and what other investors are doing at the same time.

The Nifty and Sensex are indexes, not flow meters. The NSE explains that indices “reflect the changing expectations of the stock market about future dividends of India’s corporate sector.” Expectations about earnings and dividends can change because of company results, economic growth, inflation, taxation, regulation, interest rates or global events. Valuation changes, currency moves, sector rotation, retail activity and derivatives positioning can move an index even when the institutional-flow totals point in the opposite direction.
That is why a positive DII number does not guarantee a rising index, and a negative FII/FPI number does not guarantee a falling one. Flow data describes one part of the market’s positioning; the index reflects the price discovery of all participating investors and the changing value of its constituents.
What the official data includes—and what it leaves out
How NSE compiles the figures
NSE states that FII/FPI activity is compiled from PANs provided by NSDL. Its combined report aggregates trades executed by the relevant institutions on BSE, NSE and MSEI. The table therefore provides an exchange-trade activity total for the selected scope, rather than a complete account of every economic exposure an institution may have.
Why a late-day number is provisional
NSE’s report note says: “This trade data is provisional and subject to change, inter-alia, on account of custodial confirmation process, modifications etc.” A number displayed during or soon after a session can therefore be revised. Record the publication date and re-check the same report later if the exact value matters. Do not treat an unreconciled figure as a final historical fact.
Information the table does not reveal by itself
The aggregate does not identify which stocks were bought or sold, whether purchases were concentrated in a handful of index heavyweights, or whether selling in one sector was offset by buying in another. It does not disclose an investor’s time horizon or whether a transaction was a hedge. Unless the chosen report explicitly covers it, the table also does not tell you whether an exposure was created through cash equities, futures or another instrument. It cannot show whether an institution sold one security and bought a related security in a rotation trade.

Those omissions matter when interpreting an index. A fund can be a net seller in the cash market while maintaining or increasing market exposure through derivatives. Conversely, a net cash buyer may be reducing risk elsewhere. The flow total is a starting point for investigation, not an explanation of intent.
How to read a daily FII/DII table step by step
- Confirm the date and publication status. Note the trading date, the time you retrieved the table and whether it is marked provisional. Keep a record of later revisions.
- Identify the market coverage. Check whether the report is NSE-only or the combined BSE, NSE and MSEI report. Do not mix the series in a time trend.
- Check the segment label. Establish whether the table covers the cash market or another segment. Use the same segment for every day in a comparison.
- Read all three values. Inspect buy value, sell value and net value for both groups. Verify that the displayed net is consistent with buy minus sell, allowing for rounding.
- Compare the two groups. Mark whether FIIs/FPIs and DIIs are both net buyers, both net sellers, or moving in opposite directions. The sign alone is not enough; the size and gross turnover provide context.
- Extend the window. Review at least five sessions for a short-term pattern and, when making a positioning judgment, a window of roughly twenty sessions. A single session can reflect rebalancing, expiry, a block trade or a temporary hedge.
- Check index and market breadth. Compare Nifty and Sensex direction with the number of advancing and declining constituents, traded volume, volatility and the performance of major sectors. A headline index rise led by a few heavyweights is different from broad participation.
- Check cross-market drivers. Review the rupee, domestic and global interest rates, bond yields, major earnings releases, economic data, geopolitical news and index-futures positioning. These can reinforce or overwhelm the flow signal.
- Re-check the number. Because the report can be revised after custodial confirmation or modifications, update your record before using the figure in a longer-term analysis.
How to interpret opposing and matching flows
FIIs/FPIs selling while DIIs are buying
This pattern means domestic institutions bought more than they sold in the reported scope while foreign institutions sold more than they bought. Domestic demand may absorb some foreign supply, helping the index remain resilient. That outcome is conditional: the result depends on which stocks each group traded, whether orders arrived at the same time, available liquidity, derivatives hedges and other news.
For example, NSE data for 21 August 2026 showed DII net buying of ₹2,124.14 crore and FII/FPI net selling of ₹542.71 crore in the illustrative combined report. The opposite signs demonstrate that both groups can trade against each other on the same date; they do not prove that DIIs caused an index gain or that foreign selling was harmless. Check the report’s scope and provisional status when quoting the figures.
Both groups buying
When FIIs/FPIs and DIIs are both net buyers, their demand can reinforce one another. Look for evidence that buying is broad across index constituents and sectors rather than concentrated in a few stocks. Confirm whether the report is cash-market only and whether the index move is supported by volume and breadth. A simultaneous positive total can still occur during a volatile session if other investors are selling or if buying is offset by derivatives activity outside the table.
Both groups selling
When both groups are net sellers, downside pressure may increase because two large sources of demand are withdrawing at the same time. It is still not proof that flows caused a falling Nifty or Sensex. A market-wide risk event may produce both the selling and the price decline, while an index can also rise later if valuations attract buyers or policy news changes expectations.

One index rises while foreign investors sell
Several explanations can coexist: DIIs or retail investors may absorb supply; selling may be concentrated outside index heavyweights; foreign investors may hedge with derivatives; or earnings and macro news may lift the valuation of the companies that dominate the index. Examine constituent-level and sector data before assigning a single cause.
FII/FPI versus DII: useful comparison points
No category is always “smarter” or more accurate. The following distinctions help explain why their daily totals can diverge.
| Comparison | FII/FPI tendency | DII tendency | What an investor should check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Geography and mandate | Investors based outside India, with mandates that may span countries and emerging markets | Institutions based in India, serving domestic funds, policyholders, savers or other local mandates | The mandate of the specific institution is not visible in an aggregate daily total. |
| Sensitivity to global versus domestic drivers | Often sensitive to global rates, the US dollar, global risk appetite and international allocation decisions | Often linked more closely to Indian savings, domestic policy and local earnings | Both groups can respond to either global or domestic news. |
| Reported market scope | Included only within the segment and exchanges named by the report | Included only within the segment and exchanges named by the report | Confirm NSE-only versus combined BSE/NSE/MSEI and cash versus another segment. |
| Time horizon | May include long-term allocations, tactical trades, arbitrage or hedges | May include long-term portfolios, flows from fund holders, rebalancing or liquidity management | The aggregate does not disclose the holding period. |
| Sector and constituent concentration | Can be concentrated in large liquid stocks or a preferred sector | Can also be concentrated, depending on mandate and benchmark | Check sector leadership and index weights rather than assuming broad buying. |
| Ability to absorb the other group’s selling | Foreign selling can be partly offset by domestic demand | Domestic buying can be partly offset by foreign or other investor selling | Offsetting flows do not guarantee price stability. |
| Data status | NSE warns that trade data is provisional and subject to change because of custodial confirmation and modifications. | Use revised figures for historical comparisons. | |
Is FII/DII data a reliable buy or sell signal?
It is more reliable as context than as a stand-alone trigger. The cited official material does not establish a guaranteed rule that FII buying makes the Nifty rise or FII selling makes the Sensex fall. Daily totals can be revised and can conceal hedges, stock-level rotation and differences between exchange activity and final depository records.
Use confirmation instead of a binary rule
A stronger interpretation asks whether several independent observations agree:

- Are advances outnumbering declines, and are major sectors participating?
- Are volume and volatility consistent with accumulation, distribution or simply event-driven trading?
- Are index futures, options positioning and currency movements confirming or contradicting the cash-market flow?
- Do earnings, economic releases, interest-rate expectations and valuations support the same market direction?
If the answers conflict, reduce the confidence placed in the institutional-flow signal. A flow number can still help with risk awareness even when it does not provide a directional trade.

Distinguish correlation from causation
Institutions often respond to the same information that moves prices. In that case, selling and a falling index may be parallel reactions rather than a simple cause-and-effect chain. Conversely, a large order can affect prices briefly without changing the underlying earnings outlook. The table alone cannot separate those possibilities.
Putting the data into a Nifty or Sensex decision process
For a long-term investor
Use institutional flows as one portfolio-risk input. Review a multi-week or multi-month pattern alongside earnings growth, valuation, asset allocation and your own cash-flow needs. Do not replace a diversified plan with a response to one provisional daily number. If persistent foreign selling coincides with weakening breadth and deteriorating earnings expectations, it may justify reviewing concentration and risk—not automatically selling every holding.
For a short-term trader
Use the flow table as a sentiment and liquidity clue around known events such as index rebalancing, major earnings, policy decisions or derivatives expiry. Wait for price, breadth, volume and volatility to confirm the setup. Define position size and an exit level before entering; the institutional total does not reveal the next order or guarantee follow-through.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor someone monitoring market stress
Opposite flows can show that domestic demand is cushioning overseas withdrawals, while simultaneous selling can signal broader risk reduction. Track whether the pattern persists, whether volatility rises and whether the rupee and rates are moving in the same direction. A single day’s sign is not enough to classify a stress regime.
What broader ownership figures add to the picture
Daily flow data describes transactions; ownership data provides a slower-moving structural context. SEBI reported that DIIs recorded net inflows of ₹69,301 crore during January 2026. It also reported cumulative DII net inflows of ₹6.9 lakh crore during the first ten months of financial year 2025–26 and a DII share of 18.4% of the market capitalisation of NSE-listed companies at the end of December 2025.
These figures help explain why domestic institutions can act as a meaningful counterweight during sustained foreign-portfolio outflows and why their influence may grow over time. They do not predict the next session: a large ownership share does not mean every DII will buy on a down day, and cumulative inflows do not reveal the stocks, prices or timing of each transaction.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
- Using net value alone: Read buy and sell values as well, because equal net figures can hide very different turnover.
- Mixing report scopes: Keep NSE-only and combined BSE/NSE/MSEI series separate.
- Ignoring the segment: Confirm whether the number is cash-market data or another segment before comparing sessions.
- Treating provisional data as final: Revisit figures after custodial confirmation and exchange modifications.
- Assuming the group bought the whole market: Inspect sectors and index constituents; aggregate buying can be narrow.
- Assuming a trade was directional: Remember that hedges, arbitrage and rotations can produce a net number without a simple bullish or bearish view.
- Calling one day’s move a trend: Review at least five sessions, and use a longer window for strategic decisions.
- Attributing the index move to flows automatically: Check earnings, valuations, rates, currency, global risk appetite, derivatives and retail participation.
- Comparing unreconciled records: Store the date, report name, segment and provisional status with every historical observation.
A compact daily checklist
- Write down the trading date and whether the table is provisional.
- Label the geography and exchange scope: NSE-only or combined BSE/NSE/MSEI.
- Label the segment and keep it consistent with prior observations.
- Record FII/FPI buy, sell and net values, then DII buy, sell and net values.
- Classify the pattern as both buying, both selling or opposing flows.
- Compare the result with Nifty and Sensex returns, breadth, volume, sectors and volatility.
- Review currency, rates, futures positioning, earnings and macro or geopolitical news.
- Check the five-session and twenty-session direction before making a judgment.
- Re-check the official table later for revisions.
The practical conclusion for Nifty and Sensex investors
FII/FPI and DII tables answer a narrow but useful question: which institutional group bought more than it sold, and by how much, in a defined market scope? Positive net buying can support demand and negative net selling can add pressure, but neither sign is a guaranteed index signal. The most defensible use is to combine the flow direction and its persistence with breadth, sectors, liquidity, volatility, currency, rates, earnings and valuations, while preserving the report’s exact scope and provisional status.
