Yes—fuel cells can work with catalysts that avoid platinum, and researchers have demonstrated PGM-free cells at meaningful laboratory scale. The clearest example in the supplied studies is an iron–nitrogen–carbon (Fe-N-C) cathode catalyst tested in a 50 cm² membrane-electrode assembly. That is a research-cell result, not proof of a commercially ready vehicle stack. “Without platinum” usually describes the catalyst, not every material in the complete fuel-cell system.

What does “without platinum” mean for a fuel cell?

Fuel cells produce electricity through electrochemical reactions. In the proton-exchange-membrane fuel-cell research covered here, a major target for replacing platinum-group-metal catalysts is the oxygen-reduction reaction at the cathode.

A catalyst described as PGM-free avoids platinum-group metals (PGMs) in that catalyst. It does not establish that every component in the cell or its supporting system is free of costly or scarce materials, or even that every catalyst in the system is PGM-free. Check which component a claim refers to.

Why Fe-N-C is a prominent research direction

Fe-N-C catalysts contain iron coordinated with nitrogen in a carbon support. They are a prominent PGM-free option under investigation for cathode oxygen reduction. Their performance depends on more than the catalyst’s activity in isolation: the catalyst layer must give oxygen, protons and electrons access to reaction sites while allowing water to move through it.

What have researchers demonstrated?

A 2023 Journal of Power Sources study reported gram-scale synthesis of a PGM-free Fe-N-C catalyst and tested it in 50 cm² membrane-electrode assemblies (MEAs). The study reported a peak power density of 670 mW/cm² with hydrogen and air (H₂-air) under its test conditions.

This is a cell-level research demonstration. It should not be read as a vehicle-stack rating, a field result, or evidence that a production system will deliver the same output. Test configuration and operating conditions matter when comparing power-density figures.

Are platinum-free fuel cells commercially available?

The cited evidence does not establish PGM-free fuel-cell systems as a routine commercial purchase for vehicles. The U.S. Department of Energy’s FY 2024 Hydrogen Program review says the PGM-free catalysts it reviewed remained far from light- and heavy-duty vehicle targets, with durability, scale-up and integration among the concerns.

A 2023 study also examined an alkaline direct-methanol fuel cell using commercial PGM-free cathode materials. That is evidence of research into a different fuel-cell configuration; it does not, by itself, establish a commercially available complete fuel-cell product. Catalyst, electrode and MEA development should not be conflated with a production-ready stack or system.

Why are durability and electrode design still difficult?

Durability depends on operating and test conditions

A 2024 Electrochimica Acta accelerated-stress study found that the degradation rate of Fe-based PGM-free cathodes changed with test temperature, cycling upper potential limit and relative humidity. The reported reductions below are comparisons within that study’s test context—not forecasts of service life. They cannot be added together or translated directly into years of operation.

Study condition changed Reported degradation-rate change Qualification
Temperature lowered from 85°C to 70°C 65% lower Fe-based PGM-free cathodes in the study’s accelerated-stress testing
Cycling upper potential limit lowered from 0.925 V to 0.9 V 41% lower Same study context; a test-protocol comparison, not a service-life estimate
Relative humidity lowered from 100% to 60% 43% lower Same study context; the result does not establish a general operating recommendation

The catalyst has to work inside a complete electrode

Cell output also depends on catalyst loading, the density and accessibility of active sites, porosity, gas and water transport, and the composition of the catalyst layer. Modeling work on PGM-free PEM fuel cells identifies these structural and transport factors as important to performance. A strong result from a half-cell or rotating-disk test is not interchangeable with an MEA or stack result.

Membranes and ionomers affect alkaline and AEM cells

Alkaline and anion-exchange membrane (AEM) fuel cells are relevant because their chemistry can support non-PGM catalysts. They are not a shortcut around materials challenges: alkaline membrane stability, including the stability of organic cation groups, can be an issue, particularly under dry conditions. Fe-N-C performance in gas-diffusion electrodes also depends on ionomer choice and catalyst-layer composition.

How to judge a claim about a PGM-free fuel cell

Before comparing a reported result with another catalyst, cell or product, check what was tested and how. Useful details include:

  • Cell chemistry: acidic PEM fuel cell or alkaline/AEM fuel cell.
  • Catalyst composition: genuinely PGM-free material such as Fe-N-C, or a low-PGM formulation that still contains a platinum-group metal.
  • Test level: rotating-disk or half-cell activity, gas-diffusion electrode, MEA, short stack or complete commercial system.
  • Operating conditions: active cell area, fuel and oxidant, pressure, temperature, humidity and catalyst loading.
  • Durability protocol: whether the test used a hold or cycling procedure, and its voltage limits, temperature, humidity, duration and degradation measure.
  • System integration: membrane and ionomer stability, electrode transport, water management and manufacturing scale.

These details determine whether two numbers describe comparable tests. In particular, do not compare a catalyst’s half-cell activity directly with a full-cell or stack power figure as if they were measured on the same basis.

Do not confuse fuel-cell results with electrolyzer results

A fuel cell converts chemical energy into electricity; an electrolyzer uses electricity to drive a chemical reaction. The DOE FY 2024 review reports an ElectroCat PGM-free AEM electrolysis-cell result above 2.4 A/cm² at 2.0 V. That is an electrolyzer result, not a fuel-cell output figure, and it does not demonstrate fuel-cell performance.
