Archaeologists infer human occupation from converging evidence of human-made or human-modified materials and features in a documented context. Pottery, tools, hearths, pits, postholes, structures and middens are especially informative when they occur in patterns, can be related to soil layers, and are supported by independent survey, environmental, historical or dating evidence.

No single object or date automatically proves permanent settlement. Occupation may have been residential, seasonal, temporary, ceremonial or limited to activities such as tool production or food processing. The confidence of the interpretation depends on context, preservation, disturbance and the suitability and uncertainty of any dating method.

What archaeologists mean by “occupied”

In archaeology, an occupied site is a place where people carried out activities, not necessarily a place where they built a permanent home. The National Park Service distinguishes permanent settlements from seasonal or temporary camps, ceremonial places and locations used for specialized work such as tool processing. A short visit that leaves a hearth, discarded food remains or a manufacturing area can therefore be evidence of occupation even if nobody lived there year-round.

The practical question is whether human activity best explains the material and its setting. Natural processes can move stones, concentrate shells, stain soil or break objects, so archaeologists ask how probable a human explanation is compared with alternatives. They record the evidence, test several explanations and state the limits of what the surviving record can support.

Artifacts: portable objects made, used or modified by people

What counts as an artifact

Artifacts include pottery, chipped-stone and ground-stone tools, metal objects, ornaments, worked bone, bricks and other portable items that people made, used or deliberately modified. Their material, manufacturing traces and form can identify human action. A flake with patterned impact scars, for example, is more informative than an unmodified stone that merely resembles a tool.

Why a group is stronger than an isolated object

Archaeologists examine the type, quantity and distribution of artifacts. A cluster of production debris beside unfinished tools suggests a workshop; cooking vessels, animal bones and a hearth may indicate food preparation; repeated artifact types in several nearby units can reveal a larger activity area. These interpretations are stronger when objects were recorded where they lay and occur with related features.

An isolated object removed from its original setting supports a narrower conclusion. It may show that a person once passed through, that an object was traded or lost, or that later erosion moved it. It does not, by itself, establish how long people stayed, what they did there or whether other deposits remain.

Features: fixed traces of activity

Features are nonportable remains that must be documented in place. Common examples include hearths, storage or refuse pits, postholes, foundations, floors, ditches, soil stains and middens. A hearth may preserve charcoal, ash, fire-cracked rock and heat-altered sediment. A line of postholes can mark a structure even after its wooden posts have decayed. A midden may contain repeated layers of food waste and domestic debris.

Because a feature cannot simply be taken to a laboratory like an artifact, archaeologists photograph it, draw plans and profiles, describe its sediments and collect samples from identified locations. The shape, fill, boundaries and relationship to nearby deposits often matter as much as the contents. A pit cut into an earlier layer, for example, provides evidence of a later activity and helps establish a sequence.

Context and association: the setting that gives evidence meaning

Context means where an item was found, the deposit that contained it and its relationship to other finds. Field records normally include horizontal coordinates, depth, soil layer, feature number and the precise unit or grid square. These details let researchers ask whether artifacts were deposited together, whether a feature was cut into an older layer and whether later processes moved material.

Association is the relationship among objects and features. Pottery inside a sealed storage pit has a different evidentiary value from a sherd on a modern surface. Charcoal lying directly in a documented hearth may be suitable for dating that burning event; charcoal washed into a later ditch may instead date the wood or an earlier fire. Removing an object without recording its location can permanently erase these relationships.

Context also helps distinguish human activity from natural accumulation. A single shell could be natural, but repeated shells in a prepared depression alongside hearth ash and food-related tools are more consistent with people processing meals. Archaeologists still test that interpretation against local geology, animal behavior, erosion and other possible explanations.

Stratigraphy: reading layers and cuts

Stratigraphy is the study of deposits and their order. In an undisturbed sequence, lower layers were generally deposited before higher layers, so a tool in a deep layer is usually older than material above it. This is a relative relationship: it establishes order, not an exact calendar year.

Real sites are rarely perfect stacks. Burrowing animals, roots, plowing, construction, flooding, erosion and later pits can mix deposits. A later feature may cut down through several earlier layers, and an artifact can move downward through a crack or upward with soil. Archaeologists identify these disturbances by changes in sediment, cuts and fills, modern materials and mismatched artifact associations. They then interpret each context separately rather than assuming that depth alone gives age.

Site-scale patterns beyond excavation

Occupation is often evaluated before anyone opens a trench. Systematic surface survey records artifacts and features across a planned area instead of collecting only the most visible objects. The density and distribution of finds can identify activity zones, site boundaries and places that deserve testing.

Researchers may also consult archival maps, land records, historic documents, oral histories and previous archaeological reports. Aerial photographs, satellite imagery, lidar and other remote-sensing data can reveal terraces, earthworks, roads or building plans. Geophysical techniques such as ground-penetrating radar, magnetometry and electrical methods can detect buried walls, ditches, hearth-like anomalies or compacted surfaces without disturbing them.

Sampling provides a way to test whether a suspected pattern continues below the surface. Planned cores, test units or soil samples can check predictions about deposits, environmental change or buried features. The National Park Service notes that survey, remote sensing and limited testing often provide enough information to evaluate a place without full-scale excavation.

Dating: when activity happened, and what a date really applies to

Relative dating

  • Stratigraphic ordering: deposits and features are placed in sequence using their layer relationships.
  • Cross-dating: an object is compared with a type whose age is established elsewhere.
  • Seriation: changing frequencies or styles of artifacts are arranged into a relative sequence.

These methods can show that one activity predates another, but they do not by themselves produce a precise year.

Estimated calendar ranges

Absolute or chronometric methods estimate a date or range for a suitable sample. Radiocarbon dating is commonly applied to appropriate organic remains such as charcoal or bone. The National Park Service describes radiocarbon as effective for samples up to 50,000 years old; that is the stated scope for suitable samples, not a universal limit on all archaeological investigation. Tree-ring dating can provide highly resolved sequences when the wood is appropriate and can be matched to a regional chronology. Thermoluminescence can be used for some minerals, ceramics and burned features under suitable conditions.

A laboratory result dates the tested material, not automatically every artifact, layer or activity at the site. Old wood burned in a later hearth can produce an age older than the fire. A ceramic sherd may have been made years before it was discarded. Researchers therefore combine the result with stratigraphy, associations, sample history and the possibility of redeposition. Every chronometric result has uncertainty, usually expressed as a range or margin of error.

Evidence or method What it directly indicates Typical limitation
Artifact in recorded context Human manufacture, use or modification and its relationship to nearby deposits An isolated or moved object may show presence without proving sustained occupation
Hearth, pit, posthole or midden A fixed activity trace and, often, the kind of work performed Features can be truncated, reused or disturbed; interpretation depends on fill and relationships
Stratigraphy Relative order of deposits and activities Mixing, erosion and later cuts can disrupt the sequence; no exact year by itself
Survey, documents, oral history or remote sensing Site location, extent, buried anomalies or historical context Indirect evidence that normally requires ground checking or sampling
Radiocarbon, tree-ring or thermoluminescence result An estimated age or range for a suitable sample or event Sample suitability, old material, reuse and statistical uncertainty can limit what the date represents

How archaeologists investigate a suspected occupied site

  1. Define the question and area. Researchers review geology, land use, previous records and the kind of occupation being tested. A temporary camp requires different expectations from a masonry settlement.
  2. Gather non-invasive evidence. Maps, historic documents, oral histories, aerial imagery, lidar and geophysics can identify likely activity areas while preserving deposits.
  3. Conduct systematic survey. Teams walk or otherwise sample a planned area, record artifacts and features in place and map their density and distribution. Selective collecting of only unusual objects can create a misleading picture.
  4. Test predictions with samples or small units. Cores, shovel tests, soil samples or limited excavation determine whether surface patterns continue underground and whether deposits are intact.
  5. Excavate only when justified and permitted. Researchers establish a grid, expose deposits in controlled levels, map every find and feature, photograph profiles and retain samples with their provenience.
  6. Screen and analyze removed sediment. Screening can recover small artifacts, charcoal, seeds and bone that would be missed during visual digging. Laboratory specialists then study materials, soils, plants, animals and residues.
  7. Build and test a sequence. Stratigraphic relationships, artifact associations and appropriate dating results are compared. Conflicting evidence is investigated rather than averaged away.
  8. Report uncertainty and preserve records. Plans, photographs, catalogs, sample histories and conservation records allow other researchers to evaluate the interpretation. Excavation changes or destroys the original archaeological setting, which is why documentation before and during digging is essential.

How strong is the evidence?

Confidence rises when independent clues converge: a securely recorded hearth contains charcoal and cooking debris; nearby artifacts form a coherent activity pattern; the deposits are undisturbed; and a suitable sample produces a compatible date. Confidence falls when material is sparse, preservation is poor, the deposit has been mixed or the sample could have an age different from the activity being studied.

  • Directness: Human-made tools and constructed features directly reflect action; pollen, soil chemistry or an environmental change may be indirect and require interpretation.
  • Security of context: Sealed, documented deposits are stronger than exposed, redeposited or unrecorded finds.
  • Independent agreement: Multiple methods pointing to the same activity and period are more persuasive than one result.
  • Suitability and preservation: A method must match the material, and enough of that material must survive uncontaminated.
  • Disturbance history: Plowing, looting, construction, erosion, roots and animals can move or destroy evidence.

The National Park Service cautions that the tightness of a date range varies with factors such as artifact quantities and preservation, and that declaring a site’s date with 100% certainty is rare. A responsible conclusion therefore states both the supported inference and the remaining alternatives.

What one artifact can—and cannot—show

A documented artifact can support the conclusion that people reached or used a place. It may also identify an activity, technology or period when combined with its form, material and context. But the same object cannot automatically prove a permanent residence, a particular group, a single date for the whole site or uninterrupted use.

For example, a projectile point on a disturbed surface may indicate human presence in the area, while a cluster of points, manufacturing flakes, a hearth and animal remains in an intact layer supports a more specific interpretation of hunting and processing at that location. The difference is not the object alone; it is the pattern, provenience and independent corroboration.

If you find a suspected artifact

Leave it where it is, protect the location from further disturbance and record only non-destructive observations such as the general position and visible surroundings. Do not dig, clean, sell or remove it. Contact the appropriate local official, state archaeologist, museum or university archaeology department for advice and identification.

Rules differ by country, state or province, landowner and land status. On protected public land, archaeological studies generally require authorization or a permit; the National Park Service specifically limits archaeological work on its lands to authorized or permitted people. Even where collecting appears legal, removing an object can destroy the context that gives it scientific value and may violate heritage laws.

Why excavation is not automatically the best proof

Excavation can reveal buried layers and features, but it is not a neutral inspection: it alters or destroys the original arrangement. As the National Park Service puts it, “Excavation destroys an archeological place, so archeologists are very careful about how and where they dig.” Survey, geophysics, remote sensing and targeted testing can answer many questions while leaving deposits for future methods. Excavation is chosen when the expected information justifies that irreversible disturbance and when the work can be properly documented and conserved.

Putting the evidence together

The most defensible answer to whether a site was occupied is a contextual argument: people made or altered these materials; the materials occur in a meaningful spatial and stratigraphic pattern; the deposits have a documented disturbance history; and independent dating, environmental or historical evidence is compatible with that interpretation. Archaeologists then specify the kind of occupation and the period they can support, rather than treating “occupation” as proof of a permanent settlement.
