No evidence has yet established that life once existed on Mars. NASA’s strongest current candidate is a Perseverance rock called Cheyava Falls, sampled as the Sapphire Canyon core in Jezero Crater. It combines an ancient watery setting, organic carbon, and patterned mineral features that could be consistent with microbial activity. NASA also reports that the same minerals and chemistry can form without biology, so the result is classified as a potential biosignature, not a discovery of life.
To answer the question responsibly, separate three claims: Mars was once habitable; Mars contains carbon-based or otherwise suggestive chemistry; and organisms actually lived there. The first two have substantial evidence. The third remains unconfirmed.
What would count as evidence of past life?
A persuasive case would require several independent observations that fit a biological explanation better than any known geological, chemical, radiative, or contamination process. Scientists call a feature a biosignature when it could indicate life. “Could” is essential: a biosignature candidate is not automatically biological.

The material must come from an environment where liquid water, chemical building blocks, and an energy source could have existed together. Jezero Crater preserves an ancient lake-and-river system, and Gale Crater records an ancient lake environment. Such settings establish habitability—the possibility that life could survive—not inhabitation.

Preservation potential
Fine-grained sediments, clays, silica, and carbonates formed or altered in water can trap organic molecules, mineral textures, or other traces for billions of years. Preservation makes a signal recoverable; it does not show that organisms produced it. A well-preserved nonbiological reaction is still nonbiological.
Organic chemistry
Organic molecules contain carbon and are central to terrestrial life, but they also arise through meteorite chemistry, water-rock reactions, radiation, and other abiotic processes. Their presence becomes more informative when their distribution, structure, concentration, and geological setting are difficult to explain without biology.
Textures and mineral associations
Shape alone is weak evidence. A pattern gains weight when it occurs with minerals, chemistry, and sedimentary structures that have a plausible biological mechanism. Even then, researchers must reproduce the pattern through nonbiological experiments and models before assigning it a biological origin.

Life can preferentially use certain isotopes, leaving a measurable ratio in minerals or organic compounds. An isotope pattern resembling one produced by life on Earth is useful, but it is not unique to life. The strongest argument would combine isotopes with preserved morphology, organic chemistry, mineral reactions, and a setting that supports the proposed metabolism.
Alternative-explanation testing
Every candidate must be tested against water-rock chemistry, volcanic or hydrothermal processes, radiation, atmospheric reactions, meteorite input, instrument effects, and terrestrial contamination. The question is not whether biology is possible; it is whether biology explains the complete set of observations better than the alternatives.

Why Cheyava Falls is the leading current candidate
Where the rock came from
Perseverance encountered Cheyava Falls in July 2024 in the Bright Angel formation along Neretva Vallis, an ancient river valley that carried water into Jezero Crater. NASA describes Neretva Vallis as about a quarter-mile (400 meters) wide. The rock itself measures approximately 3.2 feet by 2 feet (1 meter by 0.6 meters). In July 2024, the rover drilled the Sapphire Canyon core from it.
The setting matters because a river-fed lake can deposit fine sediment, move dissolved chemicals, and create chemical gradients that microorganisms could theoretically exploit. It is stronger context than finding an isolated organic molecule in dust, but context alone cannot establish that life was present.

What Perseverance observed
NASA reports that the sedimentary rock contains clay and silt, organic carbon, sulfur, oxidized iron, and phosphorus. Small patterned reaction fronts—informally nicknamed “leopard spots”—are associated with signatures of vivianite, a hydrated iron phosphate, and greigite, an iron sulfide.
On Earth, similar minerals and reactions can occur where organic matter participates in chemical processes that release energy for microbes. That association gives the Cheyava Falls features biological relevance. The evidence is convergent: a watery sedimentary environment, ingredients used by life, preserved organic carbon, and a mineral pattern with a possible microbial analogue.
Why NASA still calls it a potential biosignature
NASA states that vivianite and greigite can also form without life. Proposed abiotic routes include sustained high temperatures, acidic conditions, or reactions in which organic compounds bind metals. NASA reports that Cheyava Falls shows no evidence of the high-temperature or acidic conditions invoked by some alternatives, but it also says abiotic explanations cannot be ruled out.

That qualification is the scientific dividing line. Katie Stack Morgan, Perseverance project scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, said: “Astrobiological claims, particularly related to the potential discovery of past extraterrestrial life, require extraordinary evidence.” She also noted that abiotic explanations appear less likely in light of the study but cannot be excluded.

NASA reported that a year-long peer-review process preceded publication in Nature on September 10, 2025. Peer review means other scientists examined the methods, data, and interpretation before publication. It does not prove that the minerals formed biologically. NASA’s September 2025 Mars Report says detailed study after the sample reaches Earth will be needed.
By that report, Perseverance had collected 27 rock cores since landing at Jezero in February 2021. The Sapphire Canyon core is therefore part of a broader geological collection, not a lone photograph interpreted in isolation.
Other observations that inform the search
Gale Crater’s ancient water and chemistry
Curiosity data indicate that an ancient lake in Gale Crater contained chemical building blocks and energy sources relevant to habitability. Those measurements show that Mars once offered environments where life-supporting chemistry was possible. They do not show that organisms occupied the lake.
Organic molecules in three-billion-year-old rocks
NASA reported organic molecules in three-billion-year-old Gale Crater sedimentary rocks. Curiosity’s measurements included thiophenes, benzene, toluene, and small carbon chains. In 2018, NASA reported more than 10 parts per million of organic carbon in Gale mudstone samples—about 100 times greater than earlier detections of organic carbon on Mars’ surface.

The concentration applies to Curiosity’s Gale samples, not to Cheyava Falls. NASA said the source of the Gale organics was not determined. They could have been made by biological activity, but nonbiological chemistry can produce the same classes of compounds.
Seasonal methane
Curiosity detected seasonal variation in methane at Gale Crater over nearly three Martian years. Methane can be produced by biology on Earth, but water-rock chemistry is another possible source on Mars. NASA said a biological origin could not be ruled out. Because the observations do not identify the source, methane is a research clue rather than a standalone biosignature.
A carbon-isotope pattern
Curiosity also found samples enriched in a type of carbon associated with biological processes on Earth. NASA’s 2022 report described three explanations that fit the measurements: one involving biologically produced methane and two nonbiological possibilities. More data are required to distinguish them. The isotope resemblance therefore raises a testable question; it does not uniquely identify life.
Jezero samples that may preserve evidence
Perseverance’s Bunsen Peak sample contains water-formed carbonate and silica considered promising for trapping and preserving organic material. This increases the scientific value of returning and analyzing such rocks. It still demonstrates preservation potential rather than ancient biology.
What the ALH84001 meteorite teaches about extraordinary claims
ALH84001, a Martian meteorite found on Earth, became famous after a 1996 claim that microscopic structures and chemistry might be fossil evidence. Later work reported by NASA Astrobiology concluded that its organic material was produced by geochemical interaction between water and rock.

The episode does not show that fossil life is impossible. It shows why a compelling-looking shape or organic residue needs a complete geological explanation. Andrew Steele, lead author of the later study, said that nonbiological geological reactions create a background pool of organic carbon that must be considered when searching for past life on Mars.
How scientists could turn a candidate into a stronger case
- Document the setting. Establish when and how the host rock formed, whether liquid water was present, and which energy sources and elements were available.
- Map the signal in place. Show that organics, isotopes, textures, and minerals occur together in a pattern tied to the rock’s original layers rather than to later contamination.
- Characterize the chemistry at higher resolution. Determine molecular structures, oxidation states, mineral phases, and isotope ratios with laboratory instruments more capable than a rover can carry.
- Recreate abiotic pathways. Test whether the observed features can form under the temperature, acidity, pressure, radiation, and fluid conditions recorded by the rock.
- Check independent samples. Look for the same relationship in nearby cores or separate formations. Repetition reduces the chance that an unusual feature is a local artefact.
- Control contamination. Compare the sample with spacecraft materials, Earth laboratory blanks, and witness samples so terrestrial carbon or handling products cannot account for the result.
- Require independent teams and data. A robust claim should survive analyses by researchers who did not design the original experiment and should make predictions that can be tested with new samples.

What would change the answer?
The decisive advance would be a returned sample that preserves the Cheyava Falls textures and chemistry while allowing laboratories to measure molecular structure, isotopes, mineral boundaries, and contamination controls in detail. Researchers would then compare the observations with realistic abiotic experiments and determine whether any nonbiological pathway remains plausible.
A strong result would not depend on one spectacular image, one molecule, or one isotope ratio. It would show multiple independent biosignature types locked into the same ancient environment, repeated where expected, and difficult to reproduce without biology. Until those tests are completed, the scientifically accurate wording remains “potential biosignature.”

Paul Mahaffy, former principal investigator of Curiosity’s Sample Analysis at Mars chemistry laboratory, summarized the position: “We’re finding things on Mars that are tantalizingly interesting, but we would really need more evidence to say we’ve identified life.”
