Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted Minecraft Java servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
To run a Minecraft Java Edition dedicated server, you need a compatible Java runtime, a server JAR, enough memory and storage, an accepted EULA, a configured server.properties file, and network access. A reliable setup also includes a whitelist and a tested backup routine. Follow the checklist below in order; it covers a server on your own computer as well as the decisions involved in renting one.
What this checklist covers
This guide is for a dedicated server running Minecraft Java Edition. It does not cover Bedrock Edition, Realms, or the control panels supplied by particular hosting companies. You can run the server on a computer at home or on a rented virtual or dedicated machine. The software steps are broadly the same; networking, uptime and cost are different.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
1. Gather the requirements before installing anything
Have these items ready before you download a server file:
- A Minecraft version: decide the exact release your players will use. The Java version must match that release’s requirements.
- A compatible Java runtime: a Java Runtime Environment (JRE) is sufficient for running a server. A Java Development Kit (JDK) also works, but its development tools are not needed at runtime.
- The server JAR: download the official Vanilla server build from minecraft.net, or choose a compatible alternative such as Paper when you need plugin support or its performance-oriented features.
- A dedicated folder: keep the JAR, world, configuration files and logs together in a folder used only for this server.
- Hardware headroom: reserve memory, fast storage and a processor that can sustain high single-thread performance.
- Network control: for a home server, access to the router and operating-system firewall is required. A rented server normally gives you a public network address without home port forwarding.
2. Install the Java version required by your server
Java compatibility is tied to the Minecraft server release, not simply to the year you installed Java. The Minecraft Wiki’s server tutorial gives this table:
#1 Best Overall
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
| Minecraft Java Edition server release | Latest Java line listed as supported | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 26.1 and later | Java 25 | Install Java 25 or the newer version explicitly supported by the release documentation. |
| 1.20.5 and later | Java 21 | Use Java 21 unless the exact server release documents a newer requirement. |
| 1.18 and later | Java 17 | Use Java 17 for releases in this range when the server documentation does not require a newer runtime. |
Some hosting guides describe a narrower Java 21 range for 1.20.5 through 1.21.x and older Java 17 ranges. Treat those guides as secondary advice: check the exact release on the Minecraft Wiki and the download information at minecraft.net before installing. Requirements can change with a new release.
After installation, open a terminal or command prompt and verify what the server will actually use:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
java -version
If the command reports an older runtime, install the required line or call the full path to the correct Java executable in your start script. Multiple Java installations are common on a computer, so checking java -version from the same account that will run the server prevents a misleading “installed” result.
3. Choose the server software and download its JAR
| Software | Use it when | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Vanilla | You want the official, unmodified server behavior. | Download the server JAR from minecraft.net and use the release that matches your players’ clients. |
| Paper | You want performance-focused server behavior and support for Bukkit-compatible plugins. | Plugins can change gameplay and may have their own version compatibility requirements. |
| Forge or NeoForge | You are running a modded server built for that loader. | A loader and a mod pack are separate from a Vanilla setup; every player generally needs the matching client-side mods. |
Do not mix a JAR, loader and client version casually. A server built for one Minecraft release may refuse a client from another release, and a Paper or modded installation has additional compatibility rules. Rename the downloaded file to a predictable name such as server.jar only if your start command refers to that name.
4. Size the computer for the players you expect
Memory (RAM)
The Minecraft Wiki recommends at least 2 GB of available RAM for a small server. A separate hosting guide recommends at least 4 GB free for a server used by a few friends, with more for larger or modded worlds. These are starting points, not guarantees: view distance, simulation distance, plugins, mods, entity counts and world generation can all increase usage.
| Server situation | Planning guidance from the available references | Why the figure can change |
|---|---|---|
| Small, lightly loaded Vanilla server | At least 2 GB available, as recommended by the Minecraft Wiki. | Exploration, high view distance or several simultaneous players can require more. |
| A few friends | At least 4 GB free, as suggested by a hosting guide. | This is a guide’s recommendation, not an official Mojang limit. |
| Large or modded server | More than the small-server figures; determine the requirement from the mod pack and load you plan to run. | Mods and plugins have different footprints, and allocating all system RAM can make the operating system unstable. |
Give the server enough memory without starving the operating system. Leave room for the OS, Java overhead, backups and other services. A server that begins normally but becomes unresponsive as players explore new terrain usually needs load reduction or more headroom, not simply a larger maximum value.

Processor
For the main simulation loop, single-thread performance is usually more important than a high core count. Guides from ValeByte and Metaprora make this point, although those recommendations are not official benchmark results. Extra cores still help the operating system, storage tasks and some asynchronous work, but buying many slow cores does not automatically make a Minecraft world tick faster.
Storage
Reserve at least 5 GB for the server installation and its initial world, then add space for world growth, logs, backups and multiple copies. An SSD improves chunk loading and reduces the pauses caused by reading and writing world data. The 5 GB figure is a floor for planning, not a maximum world size.
Upload bandwidth
One hosting guide gives rough planning tiers of about 5 Mbps upload for 1–5 players, 10–20 Mbps for 5–20 players and 50 Mbps or more for 50-plus players. The publisher of those figures was not confirmed, so treat them as unverified estimates rather than Minecraft requirements. Actual demand varies with player movement, view distance, world activity and whether other devices share the connection. Measure your real upstream capacity and leave margin for normal household traffic.
5. Create a clean server folder and perform the first launch
Do not run the JAR from a temporary downloads folder. Create a permanent directory such as MinecraftServer, copy the chosen JAR into it and open a terminal in that directory. A first launch creates the files the server needs.
Recommended Free Tools
- Confirm the required Java version with
java -version. - Place the server JAR in the dedicated folder and make sure your account can read and write that folder.
- Start it once without custom memory flags so it can generate its configuration and world files:
java -jar server.jar --nogui
The exact filename must match the JAR you downloaded. The --nogui option runs the console-only server and avoids a graphical window; omit it if you specifically want the graphical interface.
The first run normally creates files such as eula.txt, server.properties, a world directory and logs. Let the process finish or stop after it reports that it cannot continue because the EULA has not yet been accepted.

6. Accept the EULA correctly
If eula.txt does not exist, the server generates it with eula=false and exits. That immediate shutdown is expected until you accept the End User License Agreement. Open the file in a plain-text editor, change the line to:
eula=true
Save the file and restart the server. Setting this value means you have accepted the agreement; do not change it unless you have read and agree to the current terms. If the server still exits, check that the file is named exactly eula.txt, that the value is lowercase true, and that you edited the copy in the same folder as the JAR.
7. Configure server.properties after the first run
Edit this file only after the initial launch has generated it. It is a plain UTF-8 Java properties file: use one key=value pair per line, begin comments with #, and do not add rich-text formatting. Values are stored as strings, so preserve the spelling and syntax expected by each setting. A plain-text editor such as Notepad is appropriate.
| Setting | Example value | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
server-port |
25565 |
The TCP port on which the server listens by default. |
max-players |
10 |
Limits simultaneous player connections. |
difficulty |
normal |
Sets the world’s difficulty; use the value accepted by your server release. |
white-list |
true |
Requires players to be on the server whitelist before joining. |
motd |
Private survival server |
Text displayed to clients in the multiplayer list. |
Many servers run acceptably with their defaults. Change only settings you understand, save the file while the server is stopped, and restart so the server reads the new values. If a setting appears to do nothing, check for a misspelled key, an invalid value, or an editor that saved a second copy with an extra extension such as .txt.txt.
8. Set memory limits in the launch command
Once the basic installation works, put the memory limits in a repeatable start script. The common options are:
-Xmssets the initial Java heap size.-Xmxcaps the maximum Java heap size.
For example, this command starts with and allows up to 4 GB of heap:

java -Xms4G -Xmx4G -jar server.jar --nogui
The 4G values are an example, not a universal recommendation. Choose them after accounting for the operating system and other applications. Raising -Xmx cannot fix an incompatible Java version, a broken plugin or a saturated CPU, and allocating nearly all physical RAM can cause swapping or an operating-system failure. Keep the command in a Windows batch file or a Linux/macOS shell script so every restart uses the same settings.
9. Make the server reachable on your network
Test locally first
Join from the same computer with localhost. From another device on the same home network, use the server computer’s private address, such as its 192.168.x.x address, and the configured port if it is not 25565. This separates a server or firewall problem from an Internet routing problem.
Forward TCP 25565 for Internet players
The standard Minecraft Java port is TCP 25565. On the router, create a port-forwarding rule that sends TCP 25565 to the server computer’s private IP address. The server computer should keep the same private address; otherwise the rule can point to the wrong device after a DHCP lease changes.
- Give the server machine a stable private address, using a router DHCP reservation or a correctly configured static address.
- Open the router’s port-forwarding page and forward external TCP port 25565 to that private address and port 25565.
- Allow the Java server or TCP 25565 through the operating-system firewall. Windows Firewall blocks unsolicited inbound traffic by default, so a router rule alone is not sufficient.
- Start the server and test from outside the home network, for example with a player’s mobile connection. Testing from inside can produce a false result on routers that do not support NAT loopback.
Players outside your network use your public IP address, followed by :25565 only when a non-default port is in use. Never publish private addresses such as 192.168.1.20 as the public server address.
Plan for a changing public IP
Many residential connections change their public IP address. Ask your Internet provider for a static address or use a reputable dynamic-DNS service that updates a hostname when the address changes. Some connections use carrier-grade NAT and do not provide an inbound public address; in that case, ordinary port forwarding will not work and a rented server or another networking solution is required.
10. Turn on the whitelist before inviting players
For a private server, enable the whitelist in server.properties with white-list=true. Then use the server console to add approved player names:

whitelist list
Enter each command without a leading slash in the server console. The name must match the player’s Minecraft account name. Add the whitelist before sharing the address; otherwise an exposed port allows anyone who can authenticate to attempt to join.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.11. Build a backup routine before the world matters
A world copy made while files are being written can be incomplete. For a manual backup, stop the server cleanly and copy the world directory, configuration files and any important scripts to storage that is not the server machine. Keep more than one dated copy when the world has significant progress.
If you cannot stop the server, use the console’s save controls, then copy the world:
save-off
save-all
After the copy completes, re-enable saving:
save-on
Periodically restore a copy to a separate test folder to confirm that the backup is usable. An off-machine copy protects against disk failure, theft and a mistaken deletion on the host computer.
12. Decide between home hardware and a rented server
| Consideration | Home server | Rented server |
|---|---|---|
| Up-front cost | Uses hardware and Internet service you already have, but may require upgrades. | Adds a recurring hosting charge; the exact price depends on provider, region and resources. |
| Networking | Requires router port forwarding, a firewall rule and a stable public address. | Usually provides a public address and avoids home-router configuration. |
| Uptime | Depends on your power, Internet connection and whether the computer stays on. | Usually benefits from data-center power and connectivity, subject to the provider’s service terms. |
| Control | Full control of the operating system, files and hardware. | Control is mediated by the provider’s virtual machine or panel, with limits set by the plan. |
| Maintenance | You handle operating-system updates, Java, firewall rules and backups. | You still maintain Minecraft, Java, configuration and backups, while the provider maintains underlying infrastructure to the extent promised. |
Choose home hosting when you want hands-on control and can leave the machine and connection available. Choose a rented machine when avoiding home networking and improving availability is worth the recurring cost. Commercial hosting guides are useful for operational suggestions but naturally have a financial interest in rented hosting, so compare their claims with the actual service terms.
13. Troubleshoot the failures people see first
| Symptom | Checks to make |
|---|---|
| The server shuts down immediately | Confirm that eula.txt contains eula=true, that you edited the file beside the JAR, and that the Java version matches the server release. |
java is not recognized or the wrong version appears |
Install the required JRE, reopen the terminal, run java -version again, and correct the PATH or use the full executable path. |
| Players on the same network cannot join | Test localhost, verify the server is listening on the configured port, use the server machine’s private address, and allow Java through the local firewall. |
| Local players connect but Internet players cannot | Check the router’s TCP 25565 rule, the destination private IP, the operating-system firewall and whether the ISP uses carrier-grade NAT or changes your public IP. |
| The server lags when exploring | Check CPU single-thread load, available RAM, disk activity and upload capacity; lower view or simulation distance and remove problematic plugins or mods before simply increasing -Xmx. |
| Settings revert or are ignored | Stop the server before editing, use plain UTF-8 text, preserve one key=value pair per line, and check that your editor did not create a duplicate filename. |
| The world cannot be restored | Verify that backups were made after saving, stored off the server machine and periodically tested in a separate location. |
14. Pre-launch checklist
- Exact Minecraft Java Edition release selected and communicated to every player.
- Java runtime verified with
java -versionand matched to that release. - Correct Vanilla, Paper, Forge or NeoForge JAR downloaded and stored in a dedicated folder.
- At least 2 GB available for a small Vanilla server, with additional headroom for players, mods and plugins.
- Fast storage with at least 5 GB reserved initially, plus room for world growth and backups.
- First launch completed and the generated files are present.
eula=truesaved in the correcteula.txt.server.propertiesreviewed for port, player limit, difficulty and whitelist policy.- Start script tested with appropriate
-Xmsand-Xmxvalues. - Local connection tested before Internet access is attempted.
- TCP 25565 forwarded to a stable private IP and allowed through the operating-system firewall.
- Whitelist enabled and every intended player added.
- Backup and restore procedure tested, with copies stored away from the server machine.
When all of these checks pass, the server has the essentials: compatible software, a valid launch configuration, enough resources for its intended load, controlled access and a recovery path if the machine or world fails.
