Etsy is not an acronym with an official phrase behind its letters. The name is tied to a founder-origin story, while the company today operates a marketplace connecting independent sellers with buyers. Its listings include more than handmade and vintage goods: Etsy’s current standards also cover seller-designed items and sourced craft supplies.
Is Etsy an acronym?
No. Etsy is not a recognized acronym or abbreviation, and Etsy’s official materials do not give the name an expansion. A reported account from co-founder Rob Kalin says he wanted a nonsense word that could become a brand from scratch and chose “Etsy” after hearing sounds while watching Federico Fellini’s film 8½. Some retellings connect the name to expressions such as “oh, yes” or “what if,” but those are part of Kalin’s reported explanation, not an established linguistic definition. CBS News’ account of the name’s origin is secondary reporting.
Etsy was founded in 2005 and is headquartered in Brooklyn, New York, according to the company’s About page.

What does Etsy sell?
Etsy is a marketplace for goods that fit its rules for being made, designed, handpicked, or sourced by sellers. That means “handmade and vintage” is useful shorthand, but it does not describe every permitted listing. Etsy’s Seller Policy, effective July 9, 2026, and its Creativity Standards distinguish four broad categories:

The policy asks sellers to describe accurately how an item was made, who made it, and where it ships from. Sellers must disclose shop members and production partners, and generally use their own listing photos or video, subject to stated exceptions. Relevant listings must also disclose when an item was created using AI. These rules define what sellers are expected to disclose; they do not guarantee that every listing complies.
How does Etsy work for buyers and sellers?
Etsy provides the marketplace and technology that help independent sellers reach buyers. Sellers manage their own inventory and orders; Etsy is not necessarily the seller of an item. For a question about a particular product or order, Etsy directs buyers to contact the seller through the marketplace. Etsy’s Help Center explains the buyer-seller relationship.

For sellers, Etsy is one route to market rather than an exclusive channel. Etsy’s 2025 Form 10-K says sellers may also sell through other venues, and identifies competition from large online marketplaces, national retailers, local consignment and vintage stores, social commerce, resale marketplaces, craft fairs, and other channels. A seller choosing where to list can weigh buyer reach and discoverability, category fit, fees and tools, and how much control they want over fulfillment and customer relationships. The available company data does not establish which channel performs best for a particular seller.

Etsy, Inc.’s 2025 Form 10-K reports 86.5 million active buyers and 5.6 million active sellers on the Etsy marketplace as of December 31, 2025, with more than 100 million items listed. Etsy marketplace gross merchandise sales (GMS) were $10.4607 billion in 2025. That figure is for Etsy’s marketplace, not the company’s consolidated GMS, which included other marketplaces during the reported period. Etsy’s SEC filings contain the annual filing.

The company says about $8.9 billion, or 85% of Etsy marketplace GMS, came from six leading categories in 2025: home and living; jewelry and personal accessories; apparel; craft supplies; paper and party supplies; and toys and games. These figures describe Etsy’s own marketplace, not the size of the entire handmade or vintage economy.
What do Etsy’s rules and fees mean for sellers?
Marketplace eligibility and fees affect the cost and effort of selling there. Etsy’s 2025 Form 10-K reports the following seller fees; they are company-reported figures from that filing, not a substitute for checking the terms that apply to a particular shop:

Because rules and charges can change, sellers should confirm the current applicable terms in Etsy’s fee policy and seller policy before listing or pricing products. The figures above come from Etsy’s filing, not a guarantee of a seller’s total cost: actual charges depend on the terms and circumstances that apply to the shop.

What impact does Etsy have on handmade and vintage markets?
Etsy’s documented role is that of a sizable marketplace for distinctive goods from independent sellers, including handmade items, original designs, vintage products, and craft supplies. Its scale gives shoppers a place to discover goods from many sellers, while its rules set expectations for eligibility and disclosure. The company describes search and discovery, human connections, and brand trust as parts of its differentiation in its 2025 Form 10-K.

Those facts do not show that Etsy caused a particular increase in seller income, expanded the handmade sector by a measurable amount, or changed the overall vintage market. Etsy’s reporting describes its own platform and strategy; it does not measure the marketplace’s causal effect on every business or on the sector as a whole. Sellers also compete and sell through other online and offline channels.
Etsy’s Q2 2026 shareholder letter, published August 5, 2026, says the company is working to make seller identity and craftsmanship more visible and describes creativity, craftsmanship, and connection as central qualities. It states: “At our best, Etsy stands for creativity, craftsmanship, and connection — it’s our core differentiation.” That is Etsy’s stated position, not an independent finding about buyer or seller outcomes. The letter also announced a $10 million Craft Catalyst Initiative with the Center for Craft to support American craft communities. Etsy’s quarterly results page provides the shareholder letter.
Marketplace enforcement is another part of Etsy’s role. The company’s 2025 Transparency Report covers policy enforcement, intellectual-property takedowns, order issues, and requests for member information during January–December 2025. Reporting on enforcement helps explain how Etsy manages trust and policy, but it does not establish that every item is authentic or every seller compliant.
