An unmanned mine-countermeasures (MCM) mission needs a complete system of systems, not simply an underwater drone. The essential package combines an unmanned surface or underwater vehicle, a launch-and-recovery platform, mine-detection sensors, identification or neutralization payloads, command-and-control software, communications, data processing, and trained operators and maintainers. The exact mix depends on the mine type, water depth, mission objective, host platform, and required standoff distance.

What the equipment has to accomplish

Mine countermeasures normally involve several distinct tasks: finding suspicious objects, classifying them, identifying a mine, neutralizing it or sweeping an area for influence mines, and proving that the route or operating area is clear. One sensor or vehicle rarely performs all of these jobs effectively. An unmanned MCM force therefore uses interchangeable vehicles and payloads that can be matched to a particular threat and environment.

The U.S. Navy’s Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) MCM Mission Package illustrates this approach. Its unmanned surface vehicle (USV) can tow a minehunting sonar or a minesweeping payload, while an MH-60S helicopter provides airborne detection and neutralization modules. Mission software, communications, shipboard computing, and post-mission analysis are part of the package rather than optional accessories.

Naval Sea Systems Command described the package in May 2023 as “an integrated suite of unmanned maritime systems and sensors” intended to counter mines in littoral waters while increasing the host vessel’s standoff distance from the threat area.

Core equipment categories

1. Unmanned operating vehicle

The vehicle carries, tows, or deploys the sensors and payloads. A USV operates on the surface and can tow equipment while keeping a crewed ship farther from a suspected minefield. An unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) travels below the surface and can conduct close surveys with its own sonar and environmental sensors.

The vehicle must provide enough endurance, payload capacity, navigation accuracy, and sea-keeping for the assigned survey. A modular payload bay is valuable because the same craft can be configured for minehunting on one sortie and influence minesweeping on another.

2. Launch, recovery, and host platform

Unmanned systems still need a way to reach the water and return safely. Depending on the architecture, that support can come from an LCS, another vessel of opportunity, a shore facility, or small boats such as Navy rigid-hull inflatable boats (RHIBs). Handling equipment, deck space, fueling, batteries, cranes or davits, and recovery control stations are all part of the deployment system.

The host platform determines how far the crewed force can remain from the mine threat and how many vehicles can be operated at once. A ship-centered package can support helicopters and multiple unmanned vehicles; an expeditionary detachment based on RHIBs has a smaller footprint but may be easier to move between austere locations.

3. Mine-detection and localization sensors

Minehunting sonar is the primary detection tool for underwater mines. The LCS package uses the AN/AQS-20 sonar, towed by an MCM USV. Towing the sonar separates the sensor from the surface vehicle’s own acoustic and electromagnetic signature and allows the sensor to search the water column and seabed along a planned track.

Near-surface mines may require an airborne sensor. The LCS package uses the MH-60S helicopter with the AN/AES-1 Airborne Laser Mine Detection System to detect and classify near-surface moored mines. An airborne system can cover shallow or cluttered areas that are difficult for a ship-towed sensor, but it adds aviation fuel, maintenance, weather, and flight-control requirements.

UUVs can carry their own side-scan sonar. The Mk 18 Mod 1 Swordfish example uses dual side-scan sonar frequencies, allowing operators to collect imagery for detecting and classifying objects on or near the seabed. The choice of frequency, altitude, speed, and track spacing affects resolution and area coverage; those settings are mission-planning decisions rather than universal equipment specifications.

4. Environmental and navigation sensors

Sonar performance depends on the local water environment. The Mk 18 Swordfish fact sheet describes sensors that record current speed, temperature, salinity, bathymetry, and depth. These measurements help operators understand sound propagation, maintain a safe survey profile, and interpret sonar returns in changing conditions.

Accurate navigation is equally important. An unmanned vehicle needs inertial and position-referencing equipment, depth control, obstacle awareness, and a way to synchronize sensor data with its track. The exact navigation suite varies by vehicle and is not specified in the cited Navy descriptions, so it should be treated as a design requirement rather than a fixed model list.

5. Identification and classification capability

Detection produces contacts; classification determines whether a contact resembles a mine; identification supports a confident decision about what the object is. High-resolution sonar imagery, repeat passes, environmental data, and analyst tools are used together. The equipment must preserve raw and processed sensor data so analysts can review ambiguous contacts after the vehicle has returned.

Classification is not the same as neutralization. A system that finds and labels a possible mine may require a separate vehicle, payload, or aircraft to deal with it. Treating the detection sensor as a complete MCM solution is a common planning error.

6. Neutralization payloads

The LCS package’s Airborne Mine Neutralization module uses the MH-60S helicopter with the AN/ASQ-235 Airborne Mine Neutralization System. The Navy describes this system as countering moored, volume, and bottom mines. The cited program material establishes the capability at the system level; it does not provide operational employment instructions, firing procedures, or target-specific tactics.

A neutralization element requires more than the payload itself. It also needs an aircraft or vehicle able to deliver it, a mission-planning system, communications with the control team, safety procedures, and a method for confirming the result. Those supporting elements should be included when estimating the equipment footprint.

7. Influence-minesweeping payloads

Influence mines are designed to react to a magnetic, acoustic, or other signature rather than a direct physical contact. The Unmanned Influence Sweep System (UISS) combines an MCM USV with a sweep payload carrying a magnetic sweep cable and a towed acoustic generator. The system produces the relevant signatures while the crewed ship remains at a safer distance.

UISS reached initial operational capability in 2022, according to the Navy announcement. Minesweeping is a different task from minehunting: the sweep attempts to trigger or defeat a class of influence mine over an area, while minehunting seeks to locate and identify individual objects. A force may need both capabilities for one route-clearance mission.

8. Command, control, communications, and processing

Operators need a control station, vehicle-management software, mission-planning tools, and communications links that remain usable at the operating range. The LCS mission package includes mission-specific software, a mission-package computing environment, mine-warfare decision aids, a multi-vehicle communications system, shipboard computing, and post-mission analysis tools.

Communications bandwidth and reliability determine how much data can be reviewed while a vehicle is at sea and how much must be stored for later recovery. Underwater vehicles generally cannot maintain the same continuous link as surface vehicles, so they may execute a preplanned mission, surface or approach a relay point to transfer data, and then continue surveying. The detailed communications method depends on the vehicle and operating area.

9. Personnel, maintenance, and logistics

An unmanned vehicle does not eliminate people. Operators plan missions, monitor vehicle health, interpret contacts, manage communications, and decide when a sortie should be aborted. Maintainers handle batteries or fuel, propulsion, sonar, navigation, payload interfaces, corrosion control, software, and recovery equipment.

The 2016 Navy description of Mk 18 UUV platoons includes sailors, support equipment, small boats, and an air-mobile shelter. It also identifies post-mission-analysis and data-fusion functions. In a deployed package, planners should additionally account for spares, transport cases, test equipment, secure work areas, power generation, environmental control, and procedures for handling a damaged or unrecovered vehicle. These are planning needs whose exact quantities depend on the system and mission.

A documented ship-centered architecture: the LCS MCM Mission Package

The LCS package is a useful example of how the pieces fit together. It is a U.S. Navy architecture, not a universal bill of equipment for every country or threat scenario.

Mission-package element Named system or platform Primary function
Remote minehunting MCM USV with AN/AQS-20 sonar Towed sonar search and minehunting from an unmanned surface vehicle
Near-surface detection MH-60S helicopter with AN/AES-1 Detection and classification of near-surface moored mines
Airborne neutralization MH-60S helicopter with AN/ASQ-235 Countering moored, volume, and bottom mines
Unmanned minesweeping MCM USV with UISS payload Magnetic and acoustic influence sweeping
Mission management Mission software and mission-package computing environment Planning, vehicle management, decision aids, and system integration
Communications and analysis Multi-vehicle communications, shipboard computing, and post-mission tools Control, data movement, interpretation, and reporting

The Navy fact file lists the MCM USV as 38.5 feet long with a modular payload bay. It also describes a plan to procure 24 MCM mission packages. That figure is a dated program plan, not a statement that 24 complete packages were operational at the same time.

The Navy declared initial operational capability for the MCM Mission Package and AN/AQS-20 sonar in March 2023. In a fact-file update dated July 2, 2025, the Navy said four packages had embarked and were supporting LCS deployments in the Fifth Fleet area. The same update described follow-on packages intended to support Seventh Fleet operations by the end of fiscal year 2027. Fleet status can change, so those dates should not be treated as a permanent inventory count.

An expeditionary underwater architecture: Mk 18 Swordfish

The Mk 18 Mod 1 Swordfish example uses UUVs deployed from Navy RHIB boats rather than an LCS mission package. The 2016 fact sheet describes four UUV platoons, each composed of 10 sailors, deploying with two to five UUVs, support equipment, small boats, and an air-mobile shelter.

Each vehicle’s dual-frequency side-scan sonar supports seabed surveys. Environmental sensors collect current speed, temperature, salinity, bathymetry, and depth so the survey data can be interpreted in context. Post-mission-analysis and data-fusion personnel turn the collected imagery and measurements into contact reports and route-clearance assessments.

That fact sheet reflects the Unmanned Warrior period in 2016. It is useful for understanding an expeditionary equipment architecture, but it should not be read as a 2026 readiness or force-size statement.

How the equipment works together during a mission

  1. Define the threat and task. Planners identify whether the priority is detection, classification, identification, neutralization, influence sweeping, or a combination. Mine type, expected depth, seabed, currents, traffic, and required clearance standard determine the payload.
  2. Select the host and launch method. An LCS, another surface vessel, a shore site, or RHIBs provide different endurance, aviation, handling, and standoff options. The host must have the deck space, power, communications, and recovery equipment required by the vehicle.
  3. Configure the vehicle. The USV or UUV receives the sonar, sweep payload, environmental package, navigation equipment, batteries or fuel, and software configuration for the assigned sortie.
  4. Plan the survey and communications scheme. Operators define tracks, depth or altitude, speed, overlap, abort conditions, data-storage settings, and the periods when the vehicle can exchange data with the control station.
  5. Launch and monitor. The control team checks vehicle health, navigation, payload status, and communications. A mission may be paused or recovered if weather, traffic, sensor quality, or vehicle condition falls outside limits.
  6. Analyze and act on contacts. Analysts review sonar and environmental data, classify contacts, and determine whether another pass, a different sensor, or a neutralization asset is needed. Detection data alone does not prove that a route is clear.
  7. Recover, maintain, and document. The vehicle is recovered, inspected, recharged or refueled, and prepared for another sortie. Data is archived, fused with other reports, and used to update the operational picture.

Choosing between a USV, UUV, and airborne element

Decision factor USV-centered approach UUV-centered approach Airborne element
Launch and recovery Ship, shore, or vessel of opportunity Small boats, ships, or shore support Airfield, ship flight deck, and aviation support
Typical sensor position Surface vehicle or towed payload Below-surface vehicle-mounted sonar Airborne sensor or neutralization system
Key advantage Can tow large payloads and remain separated from the crewed host Can survey underwater areas without a surface signature at the sensor Rapid access to near-surface or difficult shallow-water areas
Main support burden Deck handling, control links, fuel, and recovery Battery management, recovery, data retrieval, and underwater navigation Flight operations, weather limits, aviation maintenance, and aircrew

These categories are complementary rather than mutually exclusive. A force may use a UUV for a detailed seabed survey, a USV-towed sonar for broader remote hunting, and an aircraft for near-surface detection or neutralization.

Planning checklist for an unmanned MCM capability

  • Define the mine types and water-column locations the mission must address.
  • Separate detection, classification, identification, neutralization, and sweeping requirements.
  • Select a USV, UUV, aircraft, or combination that provides the required standoff and coverage.
  • Match sonar frequencies, tow bodies, environmental sensors, and payloads to the seabed and water conditions.
  • Provide launch, recovery, transport, power, fueling or charging, and safe handling equipment.
  • Provide control stations, mission software, navigation aids, communications, cybersecurity, and data storage.
  • Staff operators, sonar analysts, maintainers, data-fusion personnel, and safety roles.
  • Stock spares, batteries or fuel, test equipment, recovery aids, and repair facilities.
  • Define how contacts will be rechecked, neutralized or swept, and how clearance evidence will be recorded.
  • Verify the date and status of any program numbers before using them as current fleet claims.

What is not a credible substitute

Consumer drones, hobby UUVs, generic fish-finding sonar, or a commercial camera do not constitute an MCM capability. They generally lack the navigation accuracy, controlled acoustic performance, payload integration, secure communications, environmental sensing, data-fusion workflow, safety controls, and trained support staff required for military mine countermeasures. Substituting them would confuse an illustrative component with an operational system.

The most defensible answer, therefore, is an integrated package tailored to a defined threat: unmanned vehicle and host platform, detection and environmental sensors, mission-specific neutralization or sweep payloads, command-and-control and analysis systems, and the people and logistics that keep the package operating.
