A Starlink installation normally needs five kinds of hardware: the satellite terminal (dish), a power supply, cables, a base or kickstand, and—on many models—a Wi‑Fi router. The exact box contents are model-specific. For example, the Standard 4 X package includes Router 3, while Starlink lists the Mini, Performance, Performance (Gen 2), and Enterprise kits as not including a Wi‑Fi router.
Choose the installation site with the Starlink app’s Check for Obstructions tool before making a permanent fixing. The terminal needs a clear view of the sky as satellites move overhead; branches, poles, roofs, and similar obstacles can interrupt service. A base is enough for a ground-level test, but an elevated roof, pole, or wall installation may be appropriate when the ground view is blocked or when you want a permanent, protected setup.
What comes in my Starlink Kit?
Starlink publishes a general kit description, but it is not a universal packing list for every product. The broad list is a terminal, power supply, cables, a base, and a Wi‑Fi router. The same support page states that router hardware is excluded from the Mini, Performance, Performance (Gen 2), and Enterprise kits. A router may therefore need to be purchased separately, depending on the model you ordered.

General equipment categories
| Component | Purpose | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Starlink terminal | Communicates with satellites overhead. | Confirm the terminal model matches the setup guide and any mount you plan to use. |
| Power supply | Provides power to the terminal and, where supplied, the router. | Use the power unit supplied for that kit and follow its connection diagram. |
| Starlink cable | Carries the terminal connection to the indoor equipment. | Check the supplied length and connector path before deciding where to place the router. |
| Base or kickstand | Supports the terminal for a ground-level installation or an initial test. | It is not automatically a permanent roof or pole mount. |
| Wi‑Fi router | Creates the local wireless network and connects household devices. | Included on some kits, but not listed as included with Mini, Performance, Performance (Gen 2), or Enterprise kits. |
Concrete example: Standard 4 X
The Standard 4 X setup guide lists these contents:
- Standard dish (terminal)
- Kickstand
- Router 3
- 15 m (49.2 ft) Starlink cable
- 1.5 m (4.92 ft) AC power cable
- Power supply unit
Those lengths and the Router 3 inclusion describe the Standard 4 X package only. They should not be presented as specifications for every Starlink product.
Standard 4 X connection order
For the Standard 4 X, the guide instructs you to connect the supplied Starlink cable from the dish to router port 1, then connect the AC power cable and power supply as shown in the guide. A different kit can use another cabling or power arrangement, so do not force the Standard 4 X sequence onto a Mini, Performance, or Enterprise installation.
Why the installation location matters
Starlink’s stated requirement is a clear view of the sky so the terminal can remain connected as satellites move overhead. The obstruction tool is more useful than a generic diagram because it evaluates the actual trees, buildings, poles, and rooflines around your proposed location. Starlink specifically identifies tree branches, poles, and roofs as examples of obstructions that can cause service interruptions.
Run the check at the exact place where the terminal would sit, and repeat it at each candidate location. A point that looks open from a window can still have a blocked sector when viewed from the terminal’s height. Treat the app result as the deciding evidence for the site rather than relying on a universal distance or clearance number; the official guidance does not provide one.

Ground-level setup versus elevated installation
| Choice | Best use | Advantages | Limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Included base or kickstand on the ground | Initial test, temporary placement, or a site with an unobstructed sky view at ground level | No extra mount purchase; quick to assemble and move while you test the connection | May have a blocked view from nearby vegetation or structures; the cable needs a safe route to the building |
| Roof installation | Ground view is obstructed and the roof provides a suitable open position | Can raise the terminal above nearby obstacles and provide a permanent location | Requires a mount compatible with the exact terminal; cable routing and safe access must be planned |
| Pole installation | A pole can provide the required height or a useful position away from a building | Flexible placement when a roof or wall is unsuitable | Needs a correctly sized, model-compatible mounting solution and a stable installation |
| Wall installation | The wall offers a clear direction and a practical cable entry point | Can avoid roof work while keeping the terminal elevated | Wall position, bracket fit, and cable protection all depend on the site and kit |
Starlink describes the included base as suitable for ground-level installation or a quick test. Permanent mounting is an optional approach associated with performance, cable protection, and long-term reliability; it is not a requirement for every customer.
How to choose the exact spot
1. Start with several candidate positions
Consider an open part of the yard, a roof section, a pole location, and a wall position if those are available. Do not purchase a mount before you know which position passes the obstruction check. The terminal’s eventual height and nearby objects can change the app’s result.
2. Run “Check for Obstructions” in the Starlink app
Stand at each proposed terminal position and use the app’s obstruction feature. Compare the results rather than checking only the most convenient place. If the ground-level position shows branches, a roof edge, or another obstruction, test a higher location before committing to a permanent installation.

3. Plan the cable route at the same time
The Standard 4 X example includes a 15 m cable, but another kit may supply a different length. Measure the route from the terminal to the indoor router or power equipment, including the path around walls and through the entry point. A location that passes the sky check is not practical if the supplied cable cannot reach without a hazardous or exposed run.

4. Check the mounting surface and hardware fit
Use the supplied base for a test where appropriate. For a roof, pole, or wall, verify that the proposed mount is designed for the exact terminal model and that the mounting surface can accept it. Starlink’s installation guidance does not say that one mount fits every kit, so compatibility must be checked before purchase.
How do I set up Starlink?
- Identify the kit. Read the model name on the order or hardware and open that model’s setup guide. Record whether a router is included, which cable is supplied, and how the power unit is arranged.
- Inventory the box. Match the terminal, base or kickstand, cables, power supply, and router—if present—to the guide. If an expected part is missing, stop before mounting and confirm the kit contents with Starlink support rather than substituting an unverified cable or power unit.
- Test possible locations. At each candidate site, open the Starlink app and select Check for Obstructions. Use the location with the clearest result, or move to a roof, pole, or wall position if the ground-level view is blocked.
- Assemble the supplied base. Follow the model guide to place the terminal in its included base or kickstand for the test. Keep the unit stable and route the cable so it is not a trip hazard or sharply bent.
- Connect the terminal. Follow the kit-specific cable diagram. On Standard 4 X, connect the supplied Starlink cable from the dish to router port 1. Do not assume that another model uses the same port or sequence.
- Connect power. Attach the AC power cable and power supply exactly as illustrated for the model. Use the supplied power arrangement; the equipment list and connection order can differ between kits.
- Complete alignment. Follow the alignment instructions in the app or guide. Starlink notes that some models automatically level themselves, while others use an app alignment tool, so the terminal’s behavior is model-dependent.
- Wait for the app’s status. Keep the terminal at the tested position while the app completes its connection and obstruction assessment. If the app reports interruptions caused by obstructions, return to site selection instead of treating the warning as a software fault.
- Decide whether to make it permanent. Leave the terminal on the base if the ground position remains clear and suitable. If it is blocked or exposed to avoidable cable and access problems, select a compatible elevated mount and repeat the obstruction check from the final position before fixing it.
When an elevated mount makes sense
A separate mount is a site-dependent accessory, not a universal requirement. Consider one when the app shows that branches, a roofline, a pole, or another object blocks the ground-level view; when the only clear point is on a roof, wall, or pole; or when a permanent installation would protect the cable and keep the terminal in a stable position.
Do not describe a roof mount, pole mount, or wall bracket as included unless the guide for your exact kit says so. The general kit description includes a base, and Starlink’s installation guidance presents permanent mounting as an option. Before buying, check all of the following:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- The mount is specified for the exact terminal and kit generation.
- The terminal can be secured to the mount using the hardware and method shown in the model guide.
- The final position passes the Starlink app’s obstruction check.
- The supplied cable can reach the indoor connection point without unsafe slack, tension, or an improvised connector arrangement.
- The proposed surface and access method are appropriate for a permanent installation.
If any of these checks fails, keep testing locations rather than assuming that a different mount will solve an obstruction or cabling problem.

Common installation problems and the correct response
The app reports obstructions
First identify what the app is seeing: branches, a pole, a roof edge, or another nearby object. Move the terminal to another open point and run the check again. If every ground-level point is blocked, evaluate an elevated roof, pole, or wall position. Do not promise uninterrupted service by quoting a fixed clearance distance; the official guidance uses the site-specific obstruction tool instead.
The kit has no router
That can be normal for the Mini, Performance, Performance (Gen 2), and Enterprise kits, which Starlink lists as excluding router hardware. Reopen the exact model guide and confirm the equipment list before assuming the shipment is incomplete. A Standard 4 X customer, by contrast, should find Router 3 in the listed contents.
The cable does not reach the intended indoor location
Reconsider the terminal position and the router or power-equipment location together. The 15 m cable in the Standard 4 X guide is not a general Starlink cable length. A different model may provide another length or arrangement, so use its own guide rather than extending the run with an unverified accessory.
The terminal is connected but the site still suffers interruptions
Run the obstruction check again from the terminal’s final position, including after moving it to a roof, pole, or wall. A location that looked clear during a quick visual inspection may still contain a blocked portion of the sky. If the app identifies an obstruction, correct the physical location before changing software settings.

The alignment instructions do not match another model’s behavior
Use the model-specific instructions. Some Starlink terminals automatically level, while others require alignment through the app. The difference is expected and is one reason Starlink provides separate setup guides.
Ground test or permanent installation: a practical decision
A ground test is the quickest way to confirm that the chosen area has a workable sky view and that the equipment powers up. It is appropriate when the included base gives the terminal a stable position and the cable can be routed safely. Keep it temporary if people, vehicles, animals, or weather exposure could disturb the equipment, or if the app shows an obstruction that a higher position would remove.
A permanent installation is justified when the app confirms a clear elevated position and you need a stable, protected cable route. Choose the roof, pole, or wall only after checking mount compatibility and the cable path. The installation page’s distinction is important: the included base supports basic ground use or a quick test, whereas a permanent mount is an optional site decision.
