For a basic physical-media system, you need a player that supports the discs or records you own, a TV for movie pictures, and an audio path that ends in speakers. A turntable handles vinyl; a CD-capable player or compatible Blu-ray player handles audio CDs; a DVD or Blu-ray player sends movie video to the TV. Sound can come from powered speakers, or from a receiver/amplifier driving passive speakers. Two speakers are sufficient for stereo. Surround sound adds a multichannel AV receiver, center and rear speakers, and usually a subwoofer.

Build the system around your collection first. Then check every device’s formats, terminals, amplification, and phono requirements before buying cables or adding components.

Choose equipment from the formats you actually own

Physical media is not one universal standard. Vinyl records, audio CDs, DVDs and Blu-ray Discs each require a compatible playback mechanism, and support can vary between models in the same product category.

What you want to play Player required Other equipment
Vinyl records Turntable Powered speakers with a suitable input, or an amplifier/receiver plus speakers; a phono preamp may be required
Audio CDs CD player or a Blu-ray player whose manual confirms audio-CD support Powered speakers, or an amplifier/receiver plus speakers
DVD movies DVD player or compatible Blu-ray player TV and an audio system if you do not want to use the TV’s built-in speakers
Blu-ray movies Blu-ray player that supports your disc type and region requirements TV, usually connected by HDMI, plus stereo or surround audio equipment

A player’s name is not enough proof of compatibility. Check its operating manual for the exact disc formats, recordable media, audio files and regional restrictions it supports. Sony’s Blu-ray compatibility guidance, last modified March 21, 2023, lists examples such as CD-R and CD-RW music support, but support still depends on the individual model.

Three setups that cover most homes

1. Simplest music setup

For vinyl, connect a turntable to powered speakers or to a stereo receiver/integrated amplifier connected to two speakers. For CDs, use a CD player or a compatible Blu-ray player in the same audio chain.

  • Vinyl source: turntable.
  • Digital-disc source: CD player or confirmed CD-capable Blu-ray player.
  • Amplification: built into powered speakers, or supplied by a stereo receiver/amplifier.
  • Speakers: one left and one right speaker for normal two-channel stereo.
  • Connections: analog RCA audio is common, but use the terminals actually provided.

This is the smallest useful system because it supplies both a source and a proper amplification path. If you already own powered speakers, you may not need a separate receiver. If you own passive speakers, they must connect to an amplifier or receiver; connecting them directly to a player will not provide the required power.

2. Movies with stereo sound

Use a TV, a compatible DVD or Blu-ray player, and two speakers powered through a receiver or amplifier. The player sends video to the TV and audio to the receiver, or the receiver can sit between the player and TV as a switching hub.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Connect the player’s video output to a compatible TV input. HDMI is Sony’s recommended connection for optimum picture quality when both devices have HDMI terminals.
  2. Connect the player’s audio output to the receiver or amplifier, unless your chosen HDMI arrangement sends audio through the receiver.
  3. Connect the receiver’s left and right speaker terminals to the passive speaker pair, observing polarity.
  4. Select the player input on the receiver and the corresponding input on the TV.
  5. Set the player’s audio output according to the receiver’s capabilities and confirm that a disc produces both picture and sound.

An AV receiver can simplify this arrangement by accepting the player and other sources, then forwarding video to the TV and powering the speakers. A basic stereo receiver is more focused on two-channel audio and normally provides a two-channel amplifier, speaker terminals and inputs for sources such as a CD player.

3. Optional surround sound

Surround sound requires more than connecting a Blu-ray player. You need a multichannel-capable AV receiver and the additional speakers that match the receiver’s layout. Typical roles are a center speaker for dialogue, left and right front speakers, rear or surround speakers for effects, and a subwoofer for low-frequency effects.

Sony’s surround guidance, dated November 1, 2024, notes that a Blu-ray connection alone does not create surround sound unless the receiver supports multichannel audio. Confirm that the player, receiver and disc audio track can use the same format. A two-speaker system will normally reproduce a stereo or downmixed signal even when the disc contains a surround soundtrack.

What each component does

Turntable and phono preamp

A turntable reads the analog signal in a record groove, but many turntables output a signal that is too low for a normal AUX or line-level input. The receiving system therefore needs either a PHONO input or a phono preamp.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sony’s support guidance states: “If a PHONO input is not available, the turntable must have a built-in amplifier or an in-line amplifier must be used to connect to another input on the stereo system.” The preamp may be inside the turntable, inside the receiver, or a separate box placed between them.

Some turntables have a PHONO/LINE switch. Audio-Technica’s instructions for one such design specify PHONO when connecting to a receiver’s PHONO input and LINE when connecting to AUX or another high-level input. Treat that as model-specific operating guidance: follow the manual for your turntable. Using LINE into PHONO, or PHONO into AUX without a preamp, can produce distorted, extremely loud or extremely quiet sound.

CD player or Blu-ray player for music

A dedicated CD player is straightforward if your collection is primarily audio CDs. A Blu-ray player may combine Blu-ray, DVD and CD playback, reducing the number of boxes, but only if the exact model supports your discs. Check whether it accepts standard audio CDs, CD-R or CD-RW discs and any other formats you use.

DVD and Blu-ray player for movies

The movie player reads the supported disc and outputs video and audio. HDMI is generally the simplest modern connection because one cable can carry high-definition video and digital audio. Sony notes that available ports vary by model, region and country. Older equipment may offer composite video, but that connection is limited and requires the TV to have the matching input.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Stereo receiver or integrated amplifier

A stereo receiver selects among sources and amplifies a left/right signal for passive speakers. An integrated amplifier performs the amplification and input-selection functions without necessarily including radio reception. Check for the inputs you need: PHONO for a turntable without its own preamp, AUX or another line input for players with a suitable output, and speaker terminals that match your speakers.

AV receiver

An AV receiver is a source hub and multichannel amplifier. Denon describes this role as bringing together devices such as Blu-ray or DVD players, CD players, turntables and other sources. It can route video to the TV while decoding and amplifying audio for stereo or surround speakers. More functions do not automatically make it better for a small music-only system; choose it when you need its video switching or multichannel capability.

Powered and passive speakers

Powered speakers contain their own amplifier. They can connect directly to a suitable player or line-level source, subject to the speakers’ input options. Passive speakers need power from a stereo receiver, integrated amplifier or AV receiver.

For basic stereo, a left/right bookshelf-speaker pair is a complete speaker system. Surround layouts add speakers only when you need their specific roles. A center speaker can anchor dialogue, surround speakers add directional effects, and a subwoofer handles very low frequencies; none is mandatory for ordinary two-channel listening.

Compatibility checks before you buy

Check Question to answer Why it matters
Disc or record format Does the player explicitly support the media you own? A DVD player will not play Blu-ray Discs, and a turntable cannot play CDs.
Inputs and outputs Do the two devices have matching terminals? Connector names, not product categories, determine whether a direct connection is possible.
Amplification Are the speakers powered, or does a receiver/amplifier need to drive them? Passive speakers require an external amplifier.
Phono handling Does the turntable have a built-in preamp, or does the receiver provide PHONO? Vinyl output must be raised to the correct level before a line input.
Channel count Do you want two-channel stereo or multichannel surround? Surround requires a multichannel receiver and additional speakers.
Video connection Do the player and TV share HDMI or another usable video input? HDMI is preferred when available, while older composite connections require matching legacy jacks.

Connection and cable guide

Buy cables only after checking the terminals on both components. Common requirements include an HDMI cable between a compatible disc player and TV, stereo RCA cables for analog audio, and speaker wire from a receiver to passive speakers. Yamaha’s AVR setup guidance lists speaker wire and RCA cable among typical supplies, but the exact quantity and type depend on your equipment.

  • HDMI: player to TV, or player to AV receiver and receiver to TV.
  • RCA analog audio: player or turntable with a line-level output to AUX, CD or another matching input.
  • Speaker wire: receiver or amplifier speaker terminals to passive speakers.
  • Subwoofer cable: only if your receiver and powered subwoofer provide the corresponding outputs and inputs.

Do not assume that a cable bundle is correct merely because it is marketed for “home theater.” A component may lack the advertised jack, or a turntable may need a preamp rather than a different cable.

Step-by-step setup procedures

Connect a turntable to powered speakers

  1. Read the turntable manual and identify whether its output is PHONO or LINE, and whether a built-in preamp can be switched on.
  2. If the speakers accept a line-level input, set the turntable to LINE or place an external phono preamp between the turntable and speakers.
  3. If the speakers or receiver provide a PHONO input, use PHONO output from a turntable configured for that mode.
  4. Connect the left and right RCA plugs to the matching inputs.
  5. Select the input, start a record at low volume, and verify clean sound from both channels.

Connect a turntable to a stereo receiver

  1. Use the receiver’s PHONO input if the turntable does not have an active built-in preamp.
  2. Use an AUX, CD or other line input only when the turntable is supplying a line-level signal through its internal or an external phono preamp.
  3. Attach the turntable’s ground wire to the receiver or preamp ground terminal when the equipment provides one, following the turntable manual.
  4. Connect the receiver’s speaker terminals to the passive left and right speakers.
  5. Select PHONO or the chosen line input and check for hum, channel imbalance and distortion.

Connect a Blu-ray player, TV and stereo receiver

  1. Confirm that the player supports the Blu-ray, DVD and CD formats you intend to use.
  2. Run HDMI from the player to the receiver if the receiver supports the required video and audio signals, then run HDMI from the receiver to the TV.
  3. If the receiver is audio-only, run HDMI directly from the player to the TV and connect the player’s separate audio output to the receiver.
  4. Connect the receiver to the left and right passive speakers, or connect its line output to powered speakers if that is the receiver’s intended arrangement.
  5. Select the correct source on both the receiver and TV, insert a disc and test picture, dialogue and music.

Expand to surround

  1. Verify that the AV receiver supports the desired number of channels and the audio formats used by your discs.
  2. Connect the player to the receiver, preferably by HDMI when supported.
  3. Connect front left, front right, center and surround speakers to the receiver’s labeled terminals.
  4. Connect a powered subwoofer if your design includes one.
  5. Run the receiver’s speaker setup and level calibration, then play a known multichannel disc to confirm each speaker’s role.

Common problems and fixes

No sound from a turntable

Check the signal path first. A turntable set to PHONO will be too weak for AUX without a preamp; a turntable set to LINE should not normally feed a PHONO input. Select the correct receiver input and confirm that the RCA plugs are fully seated.

Loud hum from vinyl playback

Verify the turntable ground connection if one is provided, keep signal cables away from power cables, and confirm that the selected input matches the turntable’s output mode. If the hum remains, consult the turntable and preamp manuals rather than adding random adapters.

Picture but no movie sound

Check whether audio is routed to the TV, receiver or another output. Confirm that the receiver accepts the player’s selected audio format and that the TV is on the matching HDMI input. Optical, coaxial or analog outputs may have different format limits from HDMI.

Only stereo from a surround disc

Confirm that the receiver is multichannel-capable, the player is sending bitstream or another compatible output setting, and the disc actually includes a surround track. A Blu-ray player connection by itself cannot create surround channels.

One speaker is silent

Check balance settings, source-channel connections and speaker-wire polarity. Swap the left and right inputs or speakers briefly to identify whether the fault follows the source, cable or speaker.

How to decide what to buy

Use this order so that you do not pay for equipment your collection and room cannot use:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Inventory your media: list vinyl, CDs, DVDs, Blu-ray Discs and any recordable discs.
  2. Reuse working equipment: an existing TV, receiver, speakers or player may already cover part of the system.
  3. Choose stereo or surround: two-channel music needs two speakers; surround adds receiver channels and speakers.
  4. Resolve vinyl amplification: identify the PHONO input or built-in/external phono preamp before selecting a turntable.
  5. Map terminals: write down each device’s inputs and outputs, then select HDMI, RCA and speaker wire accordingly.
  6. Confirm model documentation: check the manual for disc compatibility, regional behavior, audio formats and connector availability.

Room size, listening distance, preferred volume and budget influence speaker and receiver choices, but there is no single correct configuration for those personal factors. The reliable baseline is format compatibility, a complete amplification path and connections that match the hardware.

Bottom line

Start with a compatible player for each physical format, a TV for movie video, and either powered speakers or an amplifier/receiver with two speakers. Add a phono preamp when the turntable and receiver do not provide the needed one. Choose an AV receiver and additional speakers only when you specifically want surround sound, and verify every format and terminal in the exact device manuals before purchasing.
