The right apparatus depends on what you need to know. To measure only the total gas volume, use a sealed cell outlet connected to a water-displacement cylinder, buret, or suitable gas syringe, plus temperature, pressure, and time measurements. To identify and quantify hydrogen and oxygen separately, use a calibrated gas chromatograph (GC) with appropriate columns, detector, standards, sampling hardware, and controlled carrier-gas flow. To calculate Faradaic efficiency, add synchronized current or charge logging and, in a flowing system, a calibrated gas-flow measurement.
A volume reading alone cannot tell you whether the gas is hydrogen, oxygen, or a mixture. Decide the measurement objective before selecting hardware, because the simple collection setup and a composition-resolved or Faradaic-efficiency system answer different questions.
Choose the measurement you actually need
Water-splitting experiments commonly have three measurement goals. They should not be treated as interchangeable:

| Total collected volume | Sealed outlet, graduated cylinder or buret for water displacement, or a suitable gas syringe; timer; temperature and pressure readings | How much gas was collected during a defined interval | Does not identify hydrogen, oxygen, or other gases |
| Gas identity and composition | Gas-tight sampling path; calibrated GC with suitable column and detector; hydrogen and oxygen standards; sampling loop or syringe; carrier gas and calibrated flow control | Species-specific concentrations and, with flow and time, product amounts | Requires calibration, a suitable detection range, and protection against air contamination and excessive dilution |
| Faradaic efficiency or time-resolved production | Composition or volume measurement plus potentiostat/galvanostat or charge logger, flow measurement where applicable, temperature and pressure monitoring, and low-dead-volume plumbing | Whether measured product formation matches the amount predicted from electrical charge | Concentration or volume by itself is insufficient; electrical and gas measurements must cover the same interval |
The cell design also matters. A 2021 European Commission harmonized report covers proton-exchange-membrane, anion-exchange-membrane, and alkaline electrolysis and identifies temperature, pressure, gas-flow rate, and gas composition as relevant reference settings. Apparatus should therefore be specified with the cell type and operating conditions rather than presented as one universal setup.

Equipment for a volume-only demonstration
This is the least expensive and simplest tier when the question is “How much gas came out?” It is appropriate for a classroom demonstration or an initial production-rate estimate, provided you clearly report that the result is a volume measurement rather than a purity measurement.
Core apparatus
- Water-splitting cell: Use a cell with distinct anode and cathode outlets if you need to collect the two products separately. Separate gas paths prevent an aggregate reading from hiding which electrode produced the gas.
- Gas-tight outlet tubing and fittings: The tubing must connect the cell to the collection vessel without leaks. Keep the path as short and low-volume as practical.
- Graduated cylinder or buret: The ACS tutorial on electrochemical water-splitting measurements describes an inverted, water-displacement collection using a graduated cylinder or buret. A clamp, stand, and water trough or reservoir keep the vessel stable while it fills.
- Gas syringe: A graduated gas syringe is an alternative physical collector when its capacity, fittings, materials, and pressure rating suit the cell. It provides volume, not chemical identity or composition.
- Timer or data logger: Record the collection interval so that volume can be converted to an average production rate.
- Temperature and pressure instruments: Record gas temperature and the relevant pressure at collection. A water-displacement reading contains water vapor and is affected by atmospheric or system pressure.
Set up water displacement
- Fill the graduated cylinder or buret completely with water and invert it in the collection reservoir, keeping its opening submerged.
- Connect the selected cell outlet to the submerged opening with gas-tight tubing. Use separate collectors for anode and cathode streams when separate product volumes matter.
- Start the timer and electrical run at a defined point. Record cell current or charge as well if you may later calculate Faradaic efficiency.
- At the end of the interval, read the collected volume at a consistent meniscus position. Record gas temperature and pressure at the same time.
- Correct the reading for water vapor when reporting a dry-gas amount. The dry-gas pressure is conceptually the total collection pressure minus the water-vapor pressure at the measured temperature, written as
Pdry = Ptotal − PH2O. - Report the interval, vessel type, temperature, pressure, whether each electrode was collected separately, and any visible leakage or crossover.
Water displacement is accessible, but it cannot distinguish hydrogen from oxygen or detect an unexpected gaseous contaminant. The ACS 2026 tutorial presents the method as a simple volume approach, not as a composition analyzer. The same limitation applies to a gas syringe.

Equipment for hydrogen and oxygen composition
Use gas chromatography when you need to know which gases are present or need species-specific quantities. The 2022 PEC best-practices article identifies GC as the preferred method for hydrogen measurement and describes calibration with known hydrogen and oxygen concentrations delivered by calibrated flow controllers or meters.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteGC hardware and gas path
- Gas-tight cell and sampling line: Seal the outlet path from the electrolysis cell to the sampling point. Include fittings and tubing compatible with the electrolyte environment and expected pressure.
- GC column and detector: Select a column and detector that resolve and detect the gases of interest. The instrument configuration must be appropriate for hydrogen and oxygen rather than assumed to work for every gas.
- Sampling loop or gas syringe: A fixed loop supports repeatable injections. A syringe can work for discrete samples but requires consistent technique and leak-free handling.
- Carrier gas supply: Provide a clean carrier gas through a calibrated flow controller or flow meter. In a continuous purge arrangement, the carrier stream transports products from the cell or reservoir headspace to the GC.
- Calibration standards: Prepare or obtain known hydrogen and oxygen concentrations that bracket the expected samples. Verify that sample concentrations remain inside the calibration range and above the detector’s limit of detection.
- Flow measurement: A concentration is not a production rate. Measure the carrier or product flow when you need an amount of gas per unit time.
Calibrate before collecting samples
- Configure the column, detector, injection method, and carrier-gas path for the gases you expect.
- Run a series of known hydrogen and oxygen concentrations using calibrated flow control or metering. Record the instrument response for each concentration.
- Check calibration linearity and confirm that the expected sample range is neither below the detection limit nor outside the standards.
- Run a blank or carrier-gas check to identify background peaks and leaks before introducing electrolysis gas.
- Inject a repeatable sample volume through the loop or syringe, then convert the measured response to concentration with the calibration curve.
- Record carrier flow, sample timing, pressure, temperature, and any dilution introduced by the sampling train.
Manual syringe sampling can draw ambient air into the line, producing false oxygen or nitrogen signals and changing the apparent composition. A continuously purged, closed carrier-gas channel can reduce that contamination, but its flow must be selected carefully: excessive flow dilutes the analyte and can push the signal below the GC detection limit or reduce signal-to-noise.

Equipment for Faradaic efficiency
Faradaic efficiency compares the amount of a measured product with the amount expected from the electrical charge passed through the cell. H2Tools describes its “Measurement of Product Crossover and Faradaic Efficiency” page as a procedure for photoelectrochemical devices and notes that the general principles can be adapted to other systems.
Additional electrical measurements
- Potentiostat, galvanostat, or equivalent current logger: Measure current continuously or integrate charge over the same interval used for gas collection or GC sampling.
- Synchronized timing: Use a common start and end time for the electrical and gas records. A gas sample taken outside the charge-integration interval cannot support a clean efficiency calculation.
- Defined reaction stoichiometry: Convert charge to the theoretical amount of product using the electron count and stoichiometry for the specific half-reaction. State the convention used in the report.
Flow and environmental measurements
In a flowing carrier-gas system, GC concentration alone does not give product amount. Add a calibrated mass-flow controller or flow meter, and record temperature and pressure at the point where the flow is defined. Product amount then depends on concentration, flow, and elapsed time, with the gas conditions stated explicitly.

How to build each measurement tier
Tier 1: total volume
- Choose a pressure-compatible cell, tubing, and collector.
- Leak-check every connection with the cell isolated before starting electrolysis.
- Route anode and cathode outlets to separate graduated collectors if product separation is required.
- Record start time, end time, temperature, pressure, and collected volume.
- Apply water-vapor and pressure corrections appropriate to the collection conditions.
- Report the result as collected gas volume or volume per time, not as hydrogen purity.
Tier 2: composition
- Close the cell and sampling path so ambient air cannot enter during normal operation.
- Install the GC column, detector, carrier-gas path, and sampling loop or syringe.
- Calibrate with known hydrogen and oxygen mixtures delivered through calibrated flow control.
- Verify linearity, detection limits, and blank response.
- Collect samples at defined times or operate a controlled continuous purge.
- Combine concentration with measured flow and elapsed time when calculating product amount.
Tier 3: Faradaic efficiency or transient behavior
- Add a potentiostat, galvanostat, or equivalent current/charge logger and synchronize it with gas acquisition.
- Install calibrated flow measurement, temperature and pressure monitoring, and low-dead-volume lines.
- Use a repeatable sampling schedule or online GC/mass spectrometry.
- Track charge and product amount over the identical interval.
- State cell type, electrolyte and operating conditions, gas path, calibration, flow, pressure, temperature, and uncertainty in the result.
Common errors and how to prevent them
Water vapor and pressure errors
Gas collected over water is not automatically dry gas. Water-vapor pressure changes with temperature, while the collection pressure may differ from ambient pressure. Record both variables and apply the corresponding correction instead of reporting an unqualified volume.
Leaks, dead volume, and incomplete capture
A leak can lower the measured amount; dead volume can delay a response; and an incompletely submerged or poorly sealed collector can lose product. Inspect tubing, valves, septa, and fittings, and keep the gas path short. Describe any portion of the stream that bypassed the collector or analyzer.

Crossover and recombination
Hydrogen and oxygen can cross between compartments or be lost through recombination before analysis. The PEC best-practices article lists crossover, recombination, and other losses as reasons measured Faradaic efficiency may fall below 100 percent. Do not treat a result below 100 percent as an instrument error without examining the cell and gas path.
Air contamination during sampling
Manual syringe sampling can introduce air. Use a closed, purged path where possible, document the sampling method, and compare against blanks. Unexpected oxygen or nitrogen should trigger a leak and contamination check before changing the electrolysis interpretation.
Excessive carrier-gas dilution
Increasing carrier flow does not always improve an analysis. If the flow dilutes hydrogen or oxygen below the GC detection limit, the measured concentration can decrease even while production remains unchanged. Choose flow with the calibration range and detection limit in mind.
Overextending a calibration
Do not use a calibration curve outside its demonstrated concentration range. The recent online-GC work emphasizes calibration, linearity, and detection limits; its particular flow rates and plumbing belong to that experimental configuration and should not be copied as universal settings.
What to document with the result
- Cell type: PEM, anion-exchange membrane, alkaline, photoelectrochemical, or another design.
- Electrode and electrolyte arrangement, including whether anode and cathode gases were collected separately.
- Temperature, pressure, gas-flow rate, and gas composition or carrier-gas conditions.
- Collector or analyzer: graduated cylinder, buret, gas syringe, GC, online GC, or mass spectrometer.
- Sampling interval, timing synchronization, and whether the system was continuous or batch.
- Calibration gases, calibration range, linearity check, detection limit, and flow-meter or controller calibration.
- Corrections for water vapor, pressure, temperature, dilution, and dead volume.
- Observed uncertainty and any evidence of leakage, crossover, recombination, or incomplete collection.
That record makes a volume estimate, a composition result, or a Faradaic-efficiency value interpretable and reproducible. Without it, the same numerical gas reading can represent very different physical measurements.
