To connect a home to satellite internet, you normally need five things: a provider-compatible outdoor satellite terminal or dish, the provider’s modem/router or gateway, power and data cables, a base or mounting system, and at least one phone or computer to use the connection. The exact hardware is provider-specific; a dish, modem, or cable bought for one service should not be assumed to work with another.

Some services ship a self-install kit, while others supply or lease the equipment and send a technician. Before ordering accessories, confirm the contents of your exact kit, where the terminal can see the sky, how the cable will enter the house, and whether your installation needs a roof, wall, or pole mount.

The equipment in a satellite-internet setup

Outdoor satellite terminal or dish

The outdoor terminal is the part that communicates with the satellite. Traditional systems describe this as a dish and transceiver assembly; newer systems may call it a terminal. It must match the provider’s service and the terminal generation supported at your address. The outdoor unit is installed where it has a reliable view of the required portion of the sky.

Do not treat a satellite dish as a universal antenna. A dish supplied for one network may use different electronics, pointing requirements, cabling, or activation procedures from another provider’s equipment. The terminal is also normally paired with the provider’s account and network hardware.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Modem, router, or gateway

The indoor equipment converts the satellite connection into a home network. Hughesnet describes a dish connected to a Wi-Fi modem. Viasat lists a modem, and its Wi-Fi modem includes a router for new installations. A gateway that combines modem and router functions may provide Wi-Fi without a separate consumer router.

A customer-owned router can sometimes be added for expanded coverage or advanced networking, but it does not replace the provider’s modem, gateway, or required terminal. Check whether the provider supports bridge, bypass, or Ethernet output before planning a second router.

Power supply and connection cables

The outdoor terminal and indoor networking equipment need the correct cables and power adapter. In a typical arrangement, one cable runs between the terminal and the indoor router or modem, while the indoor unit connects to household power and provides Wi-Fi or Ethernet to your devices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the cables supplied for the exact kit whenever possible. Length, weather sealing, connectors, and power requirements can differ between terminal generations. A cable that fits physically may still be unsuitable for the required data rate, voltage, or outdoor exposure.

Base, bracket, or optional mount

A supplied base is adequate only for the installation positions and surfaces for which it was designed. A roof, wall, eave, or pole installation may require an additional bracket or mount. Starlink notes that extra mounts or accessories can be needed depending on the site. Viasat lists a secure pole mount among its installation options.

Mounting hardware is not interchangeable by default. Confirm the terminal model, bracket pattern, load rating, weather exposure, and provider compatibility before buying a third-party mount. If the mount must be attached to a roof or elevated structure, professional installation may be safer than improvising an adapter.

Your phone, computer, or other network device

You also need a customer device to complete setup and use the connection: commonly a smartphone for the provider’s app, then a laptop, desktop, television, game console, or other Wi-Fi or Ethernet device. These devices consume the internet connection; they are not satellite-receiving equipment.

Starlink’s general kit description lists a terminal, power supply, cables, base, and Wi-Fi router, but specifically says that Mini, Performance, Performance Gen 2, and Enterprise kits do not include a Wi-Fi router. Check the guide shipped with your model rather than assuming that every kit has identical contents.

How installation differs by provider

Self-install example: Starlink Standard

The Starlink Standard package is described as a self-install system. The setup sequence is to place the terminal on a suitable base, connect the supplied cable to the router, connect the router to power, and use the provider’s app to check for obstructions and complete activation.

The app’s obstruction tool is important because a terminal can appear to have a clear view from ground level while trees, poles, roof edges, or other objects block part of its field of view. The official Standard guide warns: “Objects that obstruct the connection between your Starlink and the satellite, such as a tree branch, pole, or roof, will cause service interruptions.”

Professional-install example: Hughesnet

Hughesnet describes a technician installing the outdoor dish, mounting the indoor modem, and running cable between them. Its standard installation description also includes connecting two customer devices. The technician’s work reduces the risk of an incorrectly aligned antenna, an unsealed cable entry, or a cable route that exceeds the equipment’s limits.

Professional-install example: Viasat

Viasat describes the customer as leasing the terminal equipment and says the installer brings the leased equipment and installation materials. The technician helps select a location with a clear line of sight to the southern sky, installs the dish and transceiver/bracket assembly, and connects the modem. For new installations, the Viasat Wi-Fi modem includes a router.

“Southern sky” is a Viasat installation description, not a universal rule for every satellite service or location. Other networks and orbital configurations can require a different view. Follow the instructions for the service you are actually ordering.

Question Self-install package Professional installation
Who provides the terminal? Usually shipped in the customer’s kit Provider supplies or leases it; installer brings it in some programs
Who chooses and prepares the mounting location? Customer, using the provider’s placement guidance or app Technician evaluates the site and installs the approved mount
Who runs the indoor-outdoor cable? Customer Technician, subject to standard-installation limits
Is a router guaranteed? No; it depends on the exact kit, and several Starlink kit lines exclude one Viasat says its new-installation Wi-Fi modem includes a router; verify the terms for your service
What can create extra work? Roof, wall, or pole mounting; long or difficult cable routes Non-standard mounting, unusual cable runs, or structural work beyond the standard installation

Plan the terminal location before installation

Check the sky view

Satellite signals can be interrupted by trees, branches, poles, rooflines, chimneys, and nearby structures. Use the provider’s placement tool where one is available. For a self-install system, walk the property with the app before permanently attaching a mount. For a technician-installed service, identify possible locations and let the installer confirm the required view.

Choose a stable, serviceable surface

The base or mount must remain stable in the weather and keep the terminal’s intended orientation. A location that is technically unobstructed but difficult to reach can make future cleaning, cable inspection, or replacement harder. Avoid placing the unit where falling branches, accumulated snow, standing water, or routine roof work could damage it.

Plan the cable route and entry point

Measure the path from the terminal to the indoor modem before drilling. Account for bends, drip loops, strain relief, and the position of the power outlet. Any wall penetration needs an outdoor-rated seal so water cannot follow the cable into the structure. Professional installers handle this as part of their standard work where covered; self-install customers must follow the kit’s routing and sealing instructions.

Self-install procedure

The exact labels differ by provider, but a self-install kit generally follows this order.

  1. Inventory the box. Confirm the terminal, power supply, cables, base, router or modem, and mounting hardware listed for your model are present. If the kit line excludes a router, identify the provider-approved replacement before beginning.
  2. Use the setup app or guide to survey the site. Check the proposed position for obstructions and confirm that the base or optional mount is appropriate for the surface.
  3. Place or secure the terminal. Use the supplied base on a suitable surface, or install a compatible mount according to its structural and weather requirements.
  4. Route the outdoor cable. Keep it away from sharp edges, moving parts, and standing water. Seal any building entry and leave appropriate strain relief.
  5. Connect the terminal to the indoor equipment. Insert the cable into the specified terminal and router or modem ports; do not substitute an arbitrary cable because the connector looks similar.
  6. Connect the power supply. Plug the provider’s power equipment into a suitable household outlet and follow the guide’s startup sequence.
  7. Complete activation and network setup. Use the provider app or account page to register the terminal, set the Wi-Fi name and password where supported, and install any required firmware updates.
  8. Test from more than one location. Verify that the expected Wi-Fi or Ethernet devices connect and watch for obstruction or alignment warnings before finalizing the installation.

Prepare for a technician installation

Professional installation does not eliminate the need for site preparation. Make sure the installer can reach the proposed roof, wall, attic, or pole location; identify the indoor room where the modem should sit; and provide access to a suitable power outlet. Ask what the standard installation includes and what counts as non-standard work, such as unusually long cable runs, masonry drilling, trenching, tree removal, or a custom structural mount.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the service account and a phone available so the technician can complete activation and test the connection. If you rent the equipment, document its condition and keep all provider-owned parts together for future service or return.

What not to buy as a universal solution

  • A generic satellite dish: it may lack the correct transceiver, pointing system, or provider authorization.
  • A generic modem: satellite networks commonly require a provider-specific modem or gateway.
  • A random Wi-Fi router: it cannot replace the required satellite modem or terminal and may not support the provider’s network mode.
  • An unverified cable extension: excessive length or incorrect electrical specifications can cause dropouts or prevent startup.
  • A universal pole or roof mount: connector spacing and load requirements differ by terminal. Confirm fit with the provider or terminal documentation first.

Troubleshoot the most common equipment problems

No power or no status light

Check the wall outlet, power adapter connections, and both ends of the terminal cable. Inspect for a loose connector or damage, but do not open sealed provider equipment. If another appliance also fails at the outlet, resolve the household power issue before blaming the satellite hardware.

Frequent interruptions after setup

Use the provider’s obstruction or diagnostics screen. A branch, pole, roof edge, or newly grown foliage can block the link even when the terminal is powered and online. Repositioning the terminal or changing to a compatible mount may be necessary.

Wi-Fi works near the router but not elsewhere

This usually concerns indoor coverage rather than the satellite link. Move the gateway to a more central permitted location, use Ethernet where practical, or add a provider-supported access point or mesh system. Do not move the outdoor terminal merely to solve an indoor Wi-Fi dead zone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The terminal connects but devices cannot browse

Confirm that the account is activated, the modem or router has completed startup, and the device received an IP address. Restart the indoor equipment using the provider’s documented sequence. If the service reports an account, signal, or terminal fault, contact the provider rather than replacing equipment with an incompatible model.

Pre-order equipment checklist

  • Identify the provider, service region, and exact terminal or kit name.
  • Read the current packing list and verify whether a Wi-Fi router is included.
  • Confirm who owns the equipment and who performs the installation.
  • Use the provider’s site tool or installation guidance to check the required sky view.
  • Decide whether the supplied base is suitable or whether a compatible roof, wall, or pole mount is needed.
  • Plan the cable length, indoor entry point, weather sealing, and nearby power outlet.
  • Ask about charges or approval requirements for non-standard mounting and cable work.
  • Have a smartphone or computer ready for activation and testing.
