For surface steaming on beds, high tunnels, or a smaller farm, the basic setup is a steam generator or boiler, a water supply, reinforced steam hose, a steam-distribution line or woven nylon sock, a reinforced heat-resistant tarp, weights or chains to secure it, and soil-temperature probes. The right system depends on how much ground you need to treat and how deep the target is: deeper or open-field work may call for specialized injection or mobile equipment rather than a portable surface-steaming kit.
Start with the treatment area and target depth
Choose equipment only after deciding what soil area you intend to treat, how wide the beds are, and how deep the treatment needs to reach. A surface setup distributes steam under a tarp and is aimed at the upper 2–6 inches of soil. Mississippi State University Extension describes it as generally suited to smaller-scale applications such as high tunnels, greenhouses, or farms under 5 acres. That acreage is a guide to the method’s typical setting, not a guarantee that a particular generator can treat a given farm efficiently.
When the target is deeper, or the job involves larger open-field areas, look at specialized injection, subsurface, or mobile systems. These use different delivery arrangements—such as shanks that inject steam or pipes and hoses placed below the surface—and are not simply a larger version of a tarp kit. No one configuration fits every farm: bed dimensions, target depth, steam capacity, and the area to cover all affect the choice.
Match the delivery method to the job
| Approach | How steam is delivered | Best fit indicated by the sources | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|---|
| Surface steaming | Steam moves through a distribution pipe into a woven nylon sock beneath a tarp. | Upper 2–6 inches; smaller-scale settings such as high tunnels, greenhouses, or farms under 5 acres, according to Mississippi State University Extension. | Bed width, tarp fit, hose and distribution compatibility, generator capacity, and the ability to monitor soil temperature at the target depth. |
| Injection steaming | Specialized equipment injects steam below the soil surface; a field applicator may use shanks. | Deeper penetration and larger-scale operations. | Target depth, the applicator’s configuration, field conditions, steam capacity, and whether the system suits the crop beds and acreage. |
| Subsurface steaming | Steam is delivered through buried pipes or hoses. | Applications designed around a subsurface distribution system. | Pipe or hose layout, installation needs, bed dimensions, and the desired treatment depth. |
| Mobile field systems | A moving machine applies steam across open-field areas; some systems combine a generator with injection equipment. | Larger field-scale work. | Machine dimensions, travel and coverage needs, generator capacity, operating requirements, and evidence relevant to the specific use. |
The table describes method categories, not interchangeable accessories. A surface tarp, distribution sock, and small portable generator do not automatically provide the depth or field coverage of an injection applicator.

Equipment for a surface-steaming setup
Steam generator or boiler and water supply
The generator produces the steam; the water supply feeds it. Capacity matters because the steam source must suit the size of the treated area and the delivery arrangement. The available guidance does not establish a universal generator size, acreage-per-hour rate, or purchase price. Do not select a unit from its name or headline output alone: confirm the manufacturer’s specifications, fuel requirements, operating instructions, and compatibility with the hose and distribution equipment you plan to use.
Mississippi State University Extension’s Soil Steaming 101 gives one named example, the Sioux Steam-Flo SF-30, and reports a steam production rate of 308.4 kilograms per hour. That is the rate reported for the example in the guide—not a current availability statement, product recommendation, or proof that this model suits a particular farm.
Reinforced steam hose and distribution line
Reinforced hose carries steam from the generator toward the treated bed. In the Extension guide’s surface arrangement, reinforced pipe releases steam into a woven nylon sock laid under the tarp. The sock distributes steam over the area. Check that the hose, fittings, and distribution component are intended for the operating conditions specified by their manufacturers; ordinary garden hose or an improvised connector is not a substitute for purpose-suited steam equipment.

Reinforced, heat-resistant tarp and perimeter weights
A reinforced heat-resistant tarp covers the treatment area and helps keep steam from escaping. Secure its perimeter with chains, boards, soil, or other heavy objects. The tarp needs to cover the bed or treatment area in a way that allows the perimeter to be secured; a loose edge can let steam escape and undermine even heating. Confirm the tarp’s temperature suitability and dimensions for the planned setup rather than assuming any heavy cover will work.
Soil-temperature probes
Use probes to monitor the soil rather than relying on steam output or elapsed time alone. Mississippi State University Extension describes placing probes about 2–6 inches deep for its surface-steaming method. Positioning should reflect the soil layer you mean to treat; a reading at one depth does not establish that soil at another depth has reached the same temperature.
Transport and basic supporting equipment
A trailer can make a generator easier to move between work areas. It is a mobility aid, not a substitute for sizing the generator or choosing an appropriate steam-delivery method. The exact trailer, towing requirements, and fuel arrangements depend on the selected equipment and are not specified in the Extension guidance.

Equipment for deeper or field-scale treatment
For deeper targets, ask about injection or subsurface delivery rather than trying to adapt a surface kit. Injection systems may place steam into soil through shanks; subsurface arrangements can use pipes or hoses. Mobile systems move over open-field areas. These systems involve specialized machinery and should be evaluated as complete applicators, including the generator, delivery components, controls, and operating requirements.
University of Arizona Cooperative Extension described a prototype field-scale applicator in a report dated August 21, 2024. The prototype used a tracked 100 BHP steam generator and shank injection. The report discussed on-farm tests in Salinas, California, and identified its efficacy figures as preliminary while trials were underway. These details demonstrate a field-scale configuration; they do not establish expected results for other farms, crops, soils, or machines.
A second University of Arizona Cooperative Extension report, dated January 22, 2025, described a spinach demonstration using a self-propelled injector. It reported travel speed above 0.25 mph, cold soil around 50°F, and uniform bed temperatures in that demonstration. The report said further efficacy and profitability analysis was still to come. Treat those figures as observations from that demonstration, not as a general capacity or performance guarantee for equipment you might buy or rent.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
These examples make the scale distinction concrete: the field reports describe purpose-built tracked or self-propelled machinery, not a portable tarp system. They do not provide a general specification sheet or a universal way to convert generator output into acreage covered. Ask a supplier or service provider for details tied to the exact applicator and conditions, and distinguish demonstrated results from projections.
How to plan and run a surface-steaming job
- Define the treatment: identify the beds or area, their dimensions, and the target soil depth. Decide whether surface delivery addresses that target. If the goal extends deeper or across a large open field, evaluate injection, subsurface, or mobile equipment instead.
- Prepare the bed: tilling helps steam move through soil, according to Mississippi State University Extension. Account for soil moisture: excessively wet soil takes longer to heat. The source does not prescribe a universal moisture percentage or tillage depth.
- Set up the steam path: connect the generator and water supply to reinforced steam hose, then arrange the distribution pipe and woven nylon sock beneath the tarp as specified for the equipment.
- Cover and secure the area: position the reinforced heat-resistant tarp and weigh its perimeter down with chains, boards, soil, or other heavy objects. Check that the cover is secure before steaming so steam is not needlessly lost at the edges.
- Place probes: position soil-temperature probes about 2–6 inches deep for the described surface method, placing them where they can inform whether the intended layer is heating.
- Monitor temperature and exposure: select the target temperature and holding time for the organism and treatment goal. The guide gives a typical target of 160–180°F within a broader 140–180°F range, depending on pest and exposure time. It advises monitoring soil; it does not give one universal hold time.
- Adjust steam as the soil reaches target: the Extension guide says, “After the soil reaches the target temperature, the steam flow is adjusted to maintain the desired temperature for the intended duration.” Follow the specific equipment instructions for making adjustments.
- Shut down and handle equipment safely: follow the manufacturer’s shutdown, cooling, and handling instructions. Steam and hot equipment can cause burns, so do not treat the hose, fittings, or generator as safe to touch simply because active steaming has stopped.
Mississippi State University Extension says an organized surface-steaming setup may involve roughly three hours of preparation and around an hour of steamer operation. Those are contextual estimates from the guide, not a field-throughput promise: actual time depends on equipment, soil, weather, treatment area, and the target.
Choose equipment using these checks
- Area and bed width: compare the width and length of the actual beds with the tarp and distribution layout, not just total acreage.
- Depth: confirm that the delivery method can address the intended soil layer. Surface steaming is aimed at the upper 2–6 inches in the Extension guide.
- Steam capacity and fuel: match generator specifications to the system and job. Fuel needs and generator size affect cost and operation.
- Soil and weather conditions: starting soil temperature, moisture, wind, and ambient conditions affect heating and operation.
- Temperature monitoring and control: establish where probes go and how the system is adjusted to maintain the intended temperature for the required exposure.
- Compatibility: verify the temperature suitability and fit of hose, fittings, distribution line or sock, and tarp as a complete system.
- Labor and logistics: plan for preparation, moving equipment, securing the tarp, operation, and handling after use. Transport needs may favor a trailer for a generator, but a trailer alone does not solve delivery or capacity constraints.
- Maintenance and storage: ask the equipment supplier for maintenance and winterization instructions for the specific generator and delivery components; the cited guidance does not define a universal storage procedure.
- Safety provisions: confirm access to heat-resistant gloves and suitable clothing, and plan for burn prevention around the generator, hose, and steam release.
Temperature, safety, and common setup problems
Do not treat one temperature as a universal recipe
The Extension guide gives 160–180°F as a typical target and a broader 140–180°F range depending on pest and exposure time. The organism being targeted and the time at temperature both matter. Exceeding 180°F can harm soil structure and change soil chemistry, according to the guide. Select a protocol for the intended treatment rather than assuming that hotter or longer is automatically better.

Address uneven or slow heating systematically
- Steam escaping at the edges: inspect the tarp perimeter and secure it with the recommended weights or materials. A sound, secured cover limits steam loss.
- Slow heating: consider whether the soil is excessively wet, the initial temperature is low, or wind and ambient conditions are affecting the job. Generator size and steam penetration also matter; the guidance does not identify a single fix suitable for every cause.
- Uncertain treatment depth: use probes at the relevant depth. A surface reading is not evidence that deeper soil is at target temperature.
- Equipment or connection concerns: stop and follow the equipment manufacturer’s instructions rather than improvising a repair on a hot or pressurized system.
Protect people from steam and hot surfaces
Steam and hot equipment can cause burns. Mississippi State University Extension advises following equipment instructions, wearing heat-resistant gloves, pants, and closed-toe shoes, and using a face shield for additional protection. Keep people clear of steam outlets and hot components, and rely on the equipment’s safe operating and shutdown instructions for handling.
Costs and performance: what the available figures do—and do not—tell you
No universal price, return-on-investment figure, or local supplier list is established in the cited material. Cost depends on generator size, initial soil temperature, wind and ambient conditions, steam penetration, field size, fuel, and labor, according to Mississippi State University Extension. For a purchase, rental, or custom service, ask for a quote based on the intended area, bed dimensions, target depth, fuel, setup time, and the actual equipment configuration. The available reports do not support a general price-per-acre estimate.
The named capacity and field figures are useful as attributed examples, not a shopping comparison. The 308.4 kilograms of steam per hour figure belongs to the Sioux Steam-Flo SF-30 example in the Extension guide. The 100 BHP generator belongs to the University of Arizona’s prototype described in 2024. The speed above 0.25 mph belongs to its 2025 spinach demonstration. These measures describe different equipment and contexts; they cannot be compared as if they were equivalent productivity ratings.
