For a normal household, Starlink requires two separate things: a compatible Starlink hardware kit and an active service plan registered to the place where you will use it. The Standard 4 X kit includes the satellite terminal, kickstand, Router 3, a 15 m (49.2 ft) Starlink cable, an AC cable and a power supply. You then activate a Residential plan for fixed home use. If you need to use Starlink at another address or while travelling, Starlink’s current guidance calls for a Roam plan instead.
The exact kit contents, mounting hardware, plan names, data rules and prices depend on the Starlink model, country and service address. Treat the equipment purchase and the recurring subscription as separate decisions, and verify both in Starlink’s order flow before paying.
What the Starlink equipment does
Starlink equipment is the customer-side link between your property and the satellite network. The terminal, often called the dish, communicates with Starlink satellites. Its power system keeps the terminal operating, and a router distributes the resulting internet connection to phones, computers, televisions and other devices.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The terminal and power supply
The terminal is the essential outdoor hardware. It must be placed where it can obtain a suitable view of the sky, using the installation instructions for that particular model. The kit also needs its matching power supply and power cable. Do not assume that a power adapter from another Starlink generation is interchangeable.
The router
The Standard 4 X specification includes Router 3, which Starlink describes as Wi-Fi 6 hardware. It is the normal indoor network gateway for that kit. It provides Wi-Fi to local devices and connects to the terminal through the supplied cabling.
Router inclusion is not universal. Starlink’s general kit guidance identifies Starlink Mini, Performance and Enterprise kits as exceptions that do not include a router. Before ordering one of those models, check whether you must supply a compatible router or buy one separately. The absence of a router changes both the equipment cost and the setup steps.

Standard 4 X includes a kickstand, a 15 m (49.2 ft) Starlink cable, an AC cable and a power supply. The kickstand may be sufficient for a temporary or ground-level placement, but it is not automatically a permanent roof solution. Cable length also determines where the terminal and router can be located.

Residential for a fixed home
Residential is intended for household service at a registered, fixed, land-based service address. Starlink’s support documentation says all Residential plans include unlimited data. The address matters: availability, plan labels, speed tiers and price are determined by the local market and the exact address entered during ordering.
Residential is not Starlink’s roaming option. Starlink says Residential does not support roaming, so it should not be selected with the expectation that you can regularly move the terminal between homes, campsites or other locations.

Roam for travel or another address
If you need service while travelling or at an address other than the one registered for a Residential plan, Starlink’s current guidance says a Roam plan is required. Roam allowances, in-motion rules and country coverage depend on the local offer. The fact that a terminal can be physically transported does not by itself grant permission to use a Residential subscription elsewhere.
| Use pattern | Relevant plan category | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| One household at its registered address | Residential | Designed for fixed home use; Starlink says Residential plans include unlimited data |
| Travel, seasonal moves or another address | Roam | Required under Starlink’s current guidance; allowances and in-motion availability vary by local offer |
Why you should not rely on a universal price
Starlink does not publish one worldwide Residential or Roam price that applies to every reader. Plan availability and pricing vary by region and service address, and the order page can show different currencies and offerings. A price seen for another country, city or date may not be available to you.
To see the applicable plan, enter the intended service address in Starlink’s order flow. Use the same address when comparing plan options, because changing the address can change eligibility and price. Treat any displayed amount as the current local offer rather than a global Starlink price.

Match the mount to the terminal and surface
Mount compatibility is model-specific. A mount designed for one terminal generation may not fit another, and a roof mount has different structural requirements from a wall or pole installation. Check the compatibility information in Starlink’s current accessory guide before purchasing.
- Use a wall mount when the building wall and the chosen model’s bracket specifications support it.
- Use a roof or ridgeline solution when the roof structure and the model-specific instructions permit it.
- Use a pipe adapter only when the existing pipe dimensions and the terminal’s approved adapter match.
- Use mobility or roof-rack hardware only for a model and vehicle installation explicitly covered by Starlink.
Do not buy a mount solely because it appears in a general accessories list. First identify the exact terminal model, then confirm that the accessory is approved for that model and installation surface.
How much cable and power planning is required?
Cable distance
The Standard 4 X package includes a 15 m (49.2 ft) cable. Measure the route from the proposed terminal position to the indoor router and power equipment, allowing for bends and a safe entry path. A straight-line measurement often understates the real distance.

Starlink lists 15 m and 45 m replacement or extension cable options for Standard 4 and Standard 4 X. These are conditional purchases: buy one only after confirming the exact terminal compatibility and the total route length. A longer cable can solve a placement problem, but it does not remove the need for a suitable sky view or weather-appropriate installation.

Electrical supply
For a normal house, use the supplied AC cable and power supply as specified for the kit. Keep the power equipment in a location protected from conditions for which it is not rated, and follow the current model-specific installation instructions.
Starlink also documents a DC-DC power supply for relevant Standard 4 X mobile installations, such as a vehicle, boat or battery pack. This is optional and model-specific; it is not a universal replacement for the standard AC supply. Confirm that the accessory is intended for your exact Standard 4 X configuration before connecting it to a vehicle or battery system.

- Decide the use pattern. Write down whether the terminal will stay at one household address or move between addresses. Fixed home use points to Residential; travel or another address points to Roam under Starlink’s current guidance.
- Enter the service address. Use the address where the service will initially be used. Review the plans and currencies shown for that location rather than relying on a price from another market.
- Identify the exact hardware model. Confirm whether the order is for Standard 4 X, Standard 4, Mini, Performance, Enterprise or another current model. The model determines the included router, cables, power equipment and compatible accessories.
- Read the box-contents list. For Standard 4 X, verify the terminal, kickstand, Router 3, 15 m cable, AC cable and power supply. For other models, check whether a router or equivalent base is omitted.
- Plan the installation location. Check the sky view, cable route, indoor router position and electrical outlet before buying a mount or longer cable.
- Add only compatible accessories. Select a mount, replacement cable or DC power accessory only after matching it to the terminal model and intended surface or power source.
- Review recurring service separately from hardware. Confirm the plan category, local price, data terms and any travel limitations before completing activation.
Common household and mobile scenarios
Fixed suburban or rural home
A typical fixed home needs a Starlink terminal, its matching power equipment, a router and a suitable base or mount. A Standard 4 X buyer receives those core items, including Router 3 and the 15 m cable. Residential is the relevant plan category when the service remains at the registered home address.
Home with a roof or wall installation
The same terminal and Residential plan may be appropriate, but the included kickstand may not be the correct permanent support. Select a compatible roof, wall, pipe-adapter or ridgeline mount after checking the model and surface. Measure the cable path before deciding whether the included 15 m cable is long enough.
Camper, boat or vehicle use
Portable use changes both the subscription question and the power question. Starlink’s guidance directs travel or another address to Roam, while in-motion availability and country coverage depend on the local offer. A Standard 4 X mobile installation may also use Starlink’s documented DC-DC power supply, but that accessory is optional and model-specific. Do not assume that a Residential plan, an AC-only setup or a random vehicle adapter is suitable.
Mini, Performance or Enterprise purchase
These kits are specifically named in Starlink’s general guidance as not including a router. Budget for the networking hardware and verify the power, cable and base contents before ordering. Their service eligibility and accessory requirements should be checked on the offer for your address rather than inferred from Standard 4 X.
What can go wrong before installation?
- Buying only the plan: An active subscription cannot replace the physical terminal and power equipment.
- Buying only the terminal: Hardware without an active plan does not provide service.
- Assuming every kit has Wi-Fi: Mini, Performance and Enterprise kits are named router exceptions in Starlink’s kit guidance.
- Using Residential while travelling: Starlink says Residential does not support roaming; use the applicable Roam offer for travel or another address.
- Ordering a generic mount: Mount compatibility varies by model and surface.
- Underestimating cable length: The Standard 4 X cable is 15 m (49.2 ft); measure the complete route and consider the documented 45 m option only when compatible.
- Assuming a global price: Plan names, currencies, availability and prices are market- and address-dependent.
- Using the wrong power accessory: The DC-DC option is documented for relevant Standard 4 X mobile installations, not as a universal accessory for every terminal.
Pre-purchase checklist
- Have you chosen a fixed address or a travel use case?
- Did you enter the actual service address in Starlink’s order flow?
- Which exact terminal model are you buying?
- Does that model include a router?
- Does the box include the base, cable and power equipment you need?
- Is the included base suitable for the intended temporary or permanent installation?
- Is 15 m enough for the cable route, or is a compatible 45 m option required?
- Does the chosen mount match both the model and the installation surface?
- If using a vehicle, boat or battery pack, is the documented DC-DC accessory applicable to your Standard 4 X setup?
- Have you reviewed the local plan category, price, data terms and roaming rules shown for your address?
For most stationary households, the practical answer is a Starlink kit with its matching power equipment and router, plus a Residential subscription at the registered home address. The Standard 4 X specification supplies the core parts many homes need, while other models can omit the router or require different accessories. Travel, another service address, unusual mounting and mobile power are the cases that require a Roam plan or additional model-specific equipment.
