Angelus appears in six key episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s second season: “Surprise” (S2E13), “Innocence” (S2E14), “Passion” (S2E17), “Killed by Death” (S2E18), “Becoming, Part One” (S2E21), and “Becoming, Part Two” (S2E22). Angel loses his soul at the end of “Surprise”; “Innocence” is the first episode in which Angelus functions fully as the antagonist; and the storyline ends with the season-two finale, “Becoming, Part Two.”

If you want the complete central Angelus storyline, watch those six episodes in season-two order. For the emotional and plot context that leads into the transformation, begin with “Surprise” rather than starting at “Innocence.”

Quick answer: the Angelus episodes in order

The following list covers active Angelus appearances in the main Buffy the Vampire Slayer narrative. It distinguishes the episode in which the change occurs, episodes where Angelus drives the conflict, and the brief appearance that takes place during another villain’s story.

When does Angel become Angelus?

The change happens at the end of “Surprise.” Angel and Buffy’s intimate encounter causes Angel to lose his soul. The episode functions as the threshold between the sympathetic Angel viewers know and the soulless Angelus who drives the next part of the season.

“Innocence”, which follows immediately as S2E14, is the first full episode with Angelus as the antagonist. Its opening position matters: the audience does not have to infer that the transformation occurred or wait several episodes for the new status quo to be explained. The episode identifies the change and makes Buffy’s new objective clear—she realizes that she must destroy Angelus.

Episode-by-episode guide

“Surprise” — Season 2, Episode 13

“Surprise” is the transformation episode. Angelus does not dominate the hour as an established villain; instead, the episode supplies the decisive event that creates him. Angel and Buffy’s intimate encounter threatens Angel’s soul, and the loss of that soul takes place at the end of the episode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a watch order, do not skip directly to “Innocence” if you want the cause-and-effect relationship to land properly. “Surprise” gives the change its dramatic context, while the next episode shows the consequences. Treat the ending as the handoff from the first phase of Angel’s story to the Angelus arc.

“Innocence” — Season 2, Episode 14

“Innocence” is the first complete Angelus episode. The episode guide describes the intimate moment as transforming Angel back into Angelus, and Buffy recognizes that she must stop him. This is the clearest starting point for viewers asking when Angelus becomes the season’s active antagonist.

Because it follows “Surprise” immediately, “Innocence” works as the pair’s second half: one episode establishes the loss of the soul, and the next establishes Angelus as the person Buffy now has to oppose. If you are making a short watch list, these two episodes are inseparable.

“Passion” — Season 2, Episode 17

“Passion” is one of the central Angelus episodes. The guide explicitly identifies Angelus as the Big Bad, and his campaign of psychological torment against Buffy and the Scoobies escalates here. The episode therefore represents more than another appearance: it shows the threat operating deliberately against Buffy’s circle.

There is a gap between “Innocence” (episode 14) and “Passion” (episode 17) in the focused list. That does not change the chronology. “Passion” remains the third listed Angelus episode and the point at which the conflict is described in explicitly Big Bad terms.

“Killed by Death” — Season 2, Episode 18

“Killed by Death” contains a brief Angelus appearance during its hospital storyline. Angelus is part of the continuing season-two arc, but he is not the principal threat of this episode; that role belongs to Der Kindestod.

This distinction is useful when building a rewatch. Include the episode if you want every active Angelus appearance in the core list, but do not expect it to function like “Innocence,” “Passion,” or the two-part finale. Its main threat is separate, while the Angelus storyline continues in the background of the season’s larger progression.

“Becoming, Part One” — Season 2, Episode 21

“Becoming, Part One” returns Angelus to the center of the season’s conflict. The episode guide explicitly lists him as the Big Bad. Buffy decides she must stop Angel, and Willow discovers a possible spell that could restore his soul.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The restoration spell creates a specific decision point for viewers: the finale is not simply about defeating a monster, but also about whether Angel can be returned. Since the spell is only described as a possibility at this stage, “Part One” is the setup for the conclusion rather than the resolution.

“Becoming, Part Two” — Season 2, Episode 22

“Becoming, Part Two” is the season-two finale and the endpoint of the central Angelus arc. Angelus remains the Big Bad as Buffy confronts the Acathla crisis. The episode completes the storyline that began with the loss of Angel’s soul in “Surprise.”

Watch it directly after “Becoming, Part One.” The two episodes are a single finale movement: the first establishes Buffy’s decision and Willow’s possible restoration spell, while the second brings the Acathla crisis and the season-two conflict to its conclusion.

How the Angelus storyline is structured

The six-episode list is easier to understand as three stages rather than as six identical villain appearances.

1. Transformation: episodes 13–14

“Surprise” and “Innocence” form the transformation pair. The first ends with Angel losing his soul; the second presents Angelus fully and makes Buffy’s response explicit. If a guide labels “Surprise” an Angelus episode, it is referring to the transformation at the ending rather than a full episode-long Angelus role.

2. Escalation: episodes 17–18

“Passion” establishes Angelus as the Big Bad during an escalating campaign of psychological torment. “Killed by Death” keeps him in the active storyline but gives the principal threat to Der Kindestod. Together, these episodes show why “Angelus appearance” can mean different things: one is a major antagonist episode, while the other is a brief appearance inside a separate threat narrative.

3. Finale: episodes 21–22

“Becoming, Part One” and “Becoming, Part Two” are the concluding pair. Angelus is again explicitly the Big Bad, Buffy commits to stopping Angel, Willow finds a possible restoration spell, and the Acathla crisis carries the story through the season finale.

What to watch if you only want the Angelus arc

Choose the watch plan that matches how much context you want.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Minimum core watch

  1. Watch “Surprise” (S2E13) to see the event that removes Angel’s soul.
  2. Watch “Innocence” (S2E14) for Angelus’s first full episode and Buffy’s realization that she must destroy him.
  3. Watch “Passion” (S2E17) for the escalation of Angelus’s psychological campaign.
  4. Watch “Killed by Death” (S2E18) if you want the brief active appearance during the Der Kindestod storyline.
  5. Watch “Becoming, Part One” (S2E21) for Buffy’s decision and Willow’s possible restoration spell.
  6. Finish with “Becoming, Part Two” (S2E22), which concludes the Acathla crisis and the season-two arc.

Context-first watch

Start earlier in season two and watch through the listed episodes in their original order. This approach preserves the buildup to “Surprise,” then lets “Innocence,” “Passion,” “Killed by Death,” and the “Becoming” two-parter arrive as developments in one season rather than isolated villain episodes. The season-two guide contains 22 episodes; the focused Angelus list covers episodes 13, 14, 17, 18, 21, and 22.

Finale-focused watch

If you have already seen the transformation and escalation episodes, the final essential pair is “Becoming, Part One” followed immediately by “Becoming, Part Two.” This skips the earlier stages, so it is best for a refresher rather than a first viewing.

Do you need every season-two episode?

No, not to see the core Angelus storyline. The six episodes above contain the active appearances identified in the season-two guide, including the transformation, the first full Angelus episode, the major escalation, the brief hospital appearance, and the two-part conclusion.

However, watching all of season two gives the arc more continuity. The Angelus episodes are distributed across the latter part of a 22-episode season, and the focused list does not claim that every other episode is an active Angelus appearance. If your goal is specifically “every time Angelus is on screen,” use the six-episode list. If your goal is to understand the season’s full dramatic progression, watch season two in order.

What this list includes—and what it does not

This guide covers active Angelus appearances in the main Buffy the Vampire Slayer narrative, using the episode-guide evidence for season two. It is not an inventory of every later flashback, dream, archival image, or retrospective reference to Angelus in Buffy or in the spin-off Angel. Those categories would require a separate, comprehensive episode-by-episode catalog.

The wording “features Angelus” can therefore describe three different levels of involvement in this list:

  • Transformation appearance: “Surprise” ends with Angel losing his soul.
  • Full antagonist appearance: “Innocence,” “Passion,” and both “Becoming” episodes place Angelus at the center of the conflict.
  • Brief appearance: “Killed by Death” includes Angelus while Der Kindestod remains the principal threat.

Using those categories prevents the common mistake of treating every listed episode as the same kind of Angelus story. The chronological answer is six episodes; the narrative weight varies from a final-scene transformation to the full season-two finale.

Bottom line for a first-time viewer

Watch “Surprise” and “Innocence” together to see exactly when Angel becomes Angelus. Add “Passion” for the major psychological escalation, include “Killed by Death” for the brief continuing-arc appearance, and then watch “Becoming, Part One” and “Becoming, Part Two” as the finale pair. Those six episodes are the focused Angelus watch list for Buffy the Vampire Slayer season two.
