Enterprise networking services are the connectivity and network-operating capabilities an organization uses to link people, devices, and applications across offices, branches, data centers, and cloud environments. They can cover internet access, private connections, wireless networking, security, and ongoing network management, delivered by an internal IT team, an outside provider, or a cloud-based service model.
What the term covers
Enterprise networking services are a portfolio of capabilities, not one device or circuit. They support several connected but distinct parts of an organization’s network: campus and branch access, wide-area connections between locations, and data-center or hybrid-cloud networking. Cisco defines an enterprise network as infrastructure used by midsize and large organizations to connect users, devices, and applications (Cisco: What Is an Enterprise Network?).
- Campus, branch, and IoT connectivity: connects wired and wireless users and devices at offices, sites, and facilities.
- WAN connectivity: links locations, remote workers, data centers, suppliers, and cloud resources across geographic distances.
- Data-center and hybrid-cloud networking: connects applications, workloads, and data within and between data centers and cloud environments.
The specific services included depend on the organization’s requirements and provider or operating model. Common examples include internet and cloud access, private or virtual connectivity, secure connections to cloud resources, and network monitoring or management (Cisco: Networking Services).

A service can combine physical connections with software-defined controls and operational work. Depending on scope, it may provide:
#1 Best Overall
- GIGABIT ETHERNET PORTS: Features 5 x 1.0Gbps Ethernet ports for high-speed connectivity. Auto-negotiating ports detect the optimal speed for connected devices and work with existing Cat5e or Cat6 Ethernet cables.
- PLUG-AND-PLAY UNMANAGED NETWORK SWITCH: Simple plug-and-play setup with no software to install or configuration required.
- FLEXIBLE MOUNTING OPTIONS: Compact metal design supports desktop or wall-mount placement for versatile installation.
- SILENT & ENERGY-EFFICIENT OPERATION: Fanless design ensures silent performance, while IEEE 802.3az Energy Efficient Ethernet reduces power consumption without compromising high-speed network performance.
- REGIONAL COMPATIBILITY: Made for use in U.S. & CA only
- Wired or wireless access for users and devices.
- Traffic routing among offices, data centers, the internet, and cloud destinations.
- Monitoring of network health and performance, plus troubleshooting support.
- Policies that control which users or devices can reach particular applications or network segments.
- Security functions such as device identification, authentication, access controls, and segmentation.
Controllers and management platforms can translate business requirements into network policies, automate device operations, and help IT teams monitor and troubleshoot the environment (Cisco: What Is an Enterprise Network?). The equipment varies by design: routers and edge platforms can connect sites to carrier networks, the internet, and public clouds using options such as MPLS, broadband, cellular, or software-defined cloud interconnect. Wireless LAN controllers manage access points, while cellular gateways can provide 4G or 5G links (Cisco: What Is an Enterprise Router?).
How related terms differ
| Term | Meaning | How it relates |
|---|---|---|
| WAN | A network that connects multiple networks over a broad geographic area. | One part of enterprise networking, used to connect sites and resources across distance (Cisco: What Is a WAN?). |
| SD-WAN | An approach to deploying and managing WANs using virtualization, application-level policies, overlays, and software or devices. | A way to build or operate the WAN portion of an enterprise network; it is not a synonym for the full portfolio of networking services (Cisco: What Is SD-WAN?). |
| SASE | An architecture that combines SD-WAN capabilities with cloud-native security functions to provide secure application access. | An architecture for delivering network and security capabilities, rather than a general label for every enterprise network service (Cisco: What Is SASE?). |
| NaaS | A cloud-based model for consuming network operations without owning, building, or maintaining the underlying infrastructure. | A service and consumption model. Unlike SASE, which describes an architecture, NaaS describes how network capabilities may be provided and operated (Cisco: What Is Network as a Service?). |
| CDN | A distributed system of servers and storage that replicates content nearer to users. | Can improve content delivery and may include other network services, but is not the whole of enterprise networking (Cisco: What Is a CDN?). |
Who operates the network
The word “service” does not by itself mean an outside company runs the network. An organization’s own IT team may operate its network, or it may outsource some or all functions. A provider’s offer can range from basic connectivity, such as a leased line, to a managed service that also handles monitoring or other operations. Internet and cellular connectivity may also be part of a provider’s offer (Cisco: Networking Services).

When comparing offers, establish exactly which party is responsible for design, configuration, monitoring, incident response, maintenance, and user support. “Managed” is not a complete scope description: the service agreement determines which tasks the provider performs and what the organization retains.
How to assess an enterprise networking service
Start with the sites, users, devices, and applications that need connectivity, then compare service offers against the operating requirements. Useful questions include:

- REGIONAL COMPATIBILITY: Made for use in U.S. & CA only
- Coverage: Which offices, remote users, devices, and cloud destinations are included?
- Connectivity: Which access types and transports are supported, and are private links, broadband, or cellular options needed?
- Performance and availability: What targets, support hours, escalation paths, and remedies are written into the agreement?
- Security: Which identity, authentication, access-control, and segmentation capabilities are included, and who configures and maintains them?
- Operations: Who monitors the network, handles changes, diagnoses faults, and communicates incidents?
- Capacity and growth: How can bandwidth, sites, users, or cloud connections be expanded, and what approvals or costs apply?
- Commercial terms: What are the recurring and one-time charges, contract length, renewal terms, and exit requirements?
Availability, security, scalability, user experience, and ease of operation are common goals, but actual service commitments depend on the provider, design, and contract. Evaluate the documented terms rather than assuming that a service label guarantees a particular result.
