Brave says Leo chats that use the open-weight GLM 5.3 Flash model are end-to-end encrypted (E2EE) as of October 15, 2026. Your browser encrypts each prompt and any webpage content you deliberately share before it leaves the device. An attested, hardware-isolated Trusted Execution Environment (TEE) is then the only component intended to decrypt the request and run the model. Brave’s AI Gateway relays ciphertext and hides your IP address from NEAR AI.
That protection has a precise boundary. It covers the prompt, shared page text and generated response while they travel through, and are processed inside, the documented E2EE path. It does not secure a compromised computer, prevent screenshots or clipboard copies, automatically cover every Leo model, erase all metadata, or control information you send to another service.
What “end-to-end encryption” means in Leo
In a conventional cloud AI request, the browser sends readable text to a service that decrypts or receives it at a gateway. Leo’s announced GLM 5.3 Flash path is designed differently: encryption starts in the Brave browser, before transmission, and decryption is restricted to a verified TEE running the expected inference code and model. The operators routing or hosting the request are not supposed to see the plaintext.

Brave described the design on October 15, 2026 this way: “Your Brave browser encrypts each prompt on your device, before leaving your device, such that only an attested Trusted Execution Environment (TEE) can decrypt your prompts and run confidential LLM inference on it.” Brave also says, “Neither Brave, NEAR AI, nor the cloud host can read it.” Those statements describe the specific GLM 5.3 Flash implementation, not an unconditional promise for every Leo feature.

How a protected Leo request works
- The browser verifies the execution environment. Before releasing a decryption key, Brave’s client checks an attestation from the TEE. The attestation is intended to prove that the expected hardware, measured code and model state are running.
- The browser encrypts the request locally. Your prompt is sealed on the device. If you use Leo’s contextual feature to share a page or highlighted passage, that selected content is included in the encrypted request.
- Oblivious HTTP carries the ciphertext. The browser uses Oblivious HTTP (OHTTP) so the relay can forward an encrypted request without receiving readable prompt text.
- Brave’s AI Gateway separates the relay from the model provider. The gateway passes along ciphertext and hides your IP address from NEAR AI. IP hiding is a relay and anonymity property; it is separate from encrypting the content itself.
- The attested Nvidia-backed TEE decrypts and runs inference. Inside the hardware-isolated environment, the request is decrypted and GLM 5.3 Flash generates a response. The security claim depends on the attestation matching the expected code and model measurements.
- The response returns through the protected path. The generated answer is intended to remain protected while it travels back to the browser. Once Leo displays it, ordinary endpoint risks apply again.

Can Brave read your Leo chats?
For a GLM 5.3 Flash request that actually uses the announced E2EE route, Brave says it cannot read the plaintext prompt or response. The same statement is made for NEAR AI and the cloud host: they should receive or process ciphertext outside the TEE rather than readable conversation content.
That answer is narrower than “Brave knows nothing about you.” A relay still has to move traffic, and the browser and service have to manage a request. The published design specifically documents IP separation from NEAR AI and content confidentiality in the attested TEE. It does not promise that timing, request volume, account or subscription state, browser version, feature selection or other operational signals disappear. Treat content secrecy and metadata minimization as different properties.
What E2EE does not protect
A compromised device or browser
Encryption begins only after your browser has access to the text. Malware, a hostile browser process, a compromised operating system, a malicious keyboard component or an extension with excessive permissions could capture what you type before encryption. After decryption, the displayed answer is likewise available to the local browser and screen. E2EE cannot stop screenshots, screen recording, clipboard readers, local-history collection or a person looking over your shoulder.

Keep the operating system and browser updated, remove extensions you do not trust, use a separate profile for sensitive work and protect the device with a strong login and disk encryption. Those are endpoint controls, not features supplied by Leo’s E2EE protocol.
Every Leo model and feature
The October 15 announcement names GLM 5.3 Flash. It does not establish that all models in Leo use the same key exchange, OHTTP relay or TEE. Brave’s model documentation records changing hosting arrangements and model-specific privacy behavior. A June 30, 2025 update, for example, described hosting Claude models through Brave infrastructure. Older statements about one model must not be carried over to a different model or to a newly added feature.
Before entering sensitive material, check the model currently selected in Leo and read the current model-specific privacy and hosting description. If the interface offers a model switch, changing models can change the applicable protection boundary.

Information you intentionally send elsewhere
E2EE does not follow text after you disclose it. Copying a Leo answer into an email, document, support ticket or another AI service creates a new transmission governed by that destination’s policies. The same applies when you paste a secret into a webpage form or use a browser extension that can read the page.

Submitting feedback is therefore a separate disclosure from the narrow E2EE inference path. Review the feedback prompt and remove confidential material before sending it.
Accuracy, safety and professional confidentiality
Encryption answers who can read data; it does not make Leo’s output accurate, unbiased or suitable for a high-stakes decision. Verify medical, legal, financial, employment and security advice with a qualified professional and authoritative sources. A TEE can protect a prompt from specified infrastructure operators while the model still misunderstands it or produces unsafe instructions.

All metadata and account relationships
The documented IP protection means NEAR AI should not receive your direct client IP from the AI request. It is not a guarantee of complete unlinkability. Depending on the feature path, service operators may still observe operational details such as when a request arrived, its size, response timing, account or subscription context and the browser session that initiated it. The exact set depends on the current implementation and policy, so do not infer blanket metadata secrecy from the content-encryption claim.

The timeline shows why the model selector matters. A TEE experiment in Nightly, a later E2EE launch for GLM 5.3 Flash and other hosted models are related developments, but they are not interchangeable guarantees.
How to use Leo’s protection responsibly
Confirm the model and channel
- Open Leo in Brave and identify the selected model before starting a sensitive conversation.
- Confirm that the selected model is GLM 5.3 Flash if you require the E2EE behavior described in the October 15, 2026 announcement.
- Check whether you are running Release, Beta or Nightly, and read the current model information shown by Brave. A model change or feature update can alter hosting and privacy behavior.
Minimize what you share
- Send only the passage Leo needs rather than an entire page containing names, account numbers or unrelated confidential material.
- Remove passwords, private keys, health identifiers and customer records before submitting a prompt.
- Remember that highlighting text or sharing a page is an explicit transfer of that content into the Leo request.
Protect the endpoint
- Keep Brave and the operating system patched.
- Audit extensions and revoke those that can read or modify all websites.
- Use device login protection and full-disk encryption, especially on laptops.
- Clear sensitive text from the clipboard and avoid screenshots when the answer contains confidential information.
Handle feedback separately
Do not assume the feedback form has the same narrow E2EE guarantee as inference. Brave’s policy says feedback can include the full current conversation, the selected model, version information and subscription status. Read the confirmation text, redact secrets and submit feedback only when you accept that disclosure.

Bottom line: strong content isolation with a narrow scope
Brave’s announced GLM 5.3 Flash path provides a meaningful confidentiality boundary: the browser encrypts prompts and deliberately shared page content locally, an attested Nvidia-backed TEE decrypts and runs inference, and the gateway keeps the client IP from NEAR AI. Brave says the infrastructure operators cannot read the plaintext in that path.
The guarantee ends at the path’s edges. It does not secure an infected endpoint, prevent local copies, cover every Leo model, hide all metadata or control what you disclose through contextual sharing, feedback or another service. Verify the selected model and current implementation each time the material is sensitive, and combine E2EE with ordinary device, browser and data-minimization practices.
