In enterprise software implementation, an embedded engineer works closely with a customer to make a software product fit that organization’s systems, data, workflows, and operating constraints. Depending on the employer and project, the job can include technical discovery, configuration, integration, coding, testing, deployment, documentation, training, and early support. Here, “embedded” means working alongside a customer—not building software for a hardware device.
The plain answer to “What do embedded engineers do in enterprise software implementation?” is that they help bridge the gap between a vendor’s product and a customer’s real operating environment. That can mean interpreting requirements, shaping a solution, delivering technical changes, and helping customer teams use what has been implemented. The title is not standardized, however, so the particular job description matters more than the label.
What does an embedded engineer do?
The engineer connects a software vendor’s product and technical teams with the customer’s people and environment. They learn how the customer operates, determine how the software can support those needs, and help put the solution into use. Zuora’s enterprise implementation description includes requirements gathering, configuration, CRM and ERP integrations, testing, troubleshooting, deployment, and customer guidance (Zuora). EY describes forward-deployed engineers working with strategic customers to shape solutions and write production-quality code through deployment and early sustainment (EY).

The engineer helps translate between those perspectives. A requirement that sounds straightforward to a business stakeholder may depend on existing systems, data, or workflow choices; conversely, a product capability may need to be explained in terms of how it can serve the customer’s operation. The engineer’s contribution is to help make that fit technically feasible and usable.

The exact scope is employer- and engagement-specific. One role may focus on installation, migration, training, and advice; another may also involve substantial software development. “Embedded engineer” is not a standardized job title with one fixed set of duties. A role can span several stages of an implementation, or be assigned only a portion of the work. It is therefore safer to describe the likely responsibilities as a range than to assume every person with the title owns the whole project.
First, distinguish customer-embedded work from embedded systems
The phrase “embedded engineer” has two different meanings. In enterprise implementation, it often describes an engineer embedded with or closely assigned to a customer team. The work is about adapting and delivering enterprise software in that customer’s environment.
In embedded-systems engineering, the engineer builds software for computing platforms close to hardware. That work can involve operating-system components, device drivers, middleware, and hardware interaction. Cognizant describes this hardware-adjacent platform engineering scope (Cognizant). If a job description mentions firmware, drivers, microcontrollers, or device hardware, it may mean embedded-systems work rather than customer implementation.
The distinction is useful when reading job postings and searching for career information. A customer-embedded implementation role is defined by proximity to a customer and responsibility for software delivery in that customer’s environment. A hardware-adjacent embedded-systems role is defined by the computing platform and its interaction with hardware. The shared word does not mean the day-to-day work, technical focus, or deliverables are the same.
Typical responsibilities across an implementation
A project may divide these tasks among several specialists, so the list describes possible areas of responsibility rather than a universal checklist for one engineer. A given engagement may also put more weight on some tasks than others: for example, an implementation role can center on configuration and customer guidance, while a forward-deployed engineering position may include writing production code. The sources describe different employer-specific scopes, not a single standard sequence or staffing model.
Discover requirements and constraints
The engineer talks with customer stakeholders and technical teams to understand desired outcomes, existing systems, data, workflows, and operating limits. They translate those findings into a feasible technical approach. Discovery matters because a solution that works in isolation may fail if it conflicts with a customer’s processes, integrations, or deployment requirements.
This stage is also where an engineer helps make the scope concrete. Customer teams may describe a desired outcome, while implementation work requires a clear understanding of what the software should do in the customer’s setting. The engineer’s role is to connect those needs to a workable approach, while recognizing that the approach must fit the product and the environment. Discovery methods, stakeholders, and constraints will differ across customers and projects.
Configure the product around business processes
Where the software supports configuration, the engineer helps align settings and workflows with how the customer needs to operate. This can mean deciding how a product’s capabilities should be applied in the specific environment, rather than assuming the same setup will work for every organization.

Configuration is distinct from building a new product feature. The implementation goal is to use the available product capabilities in a way that supports the customer’s processes. The right choices depend on what the customer needs and on the product being implemented; the sources do not establish one configuration checklist that applies to every enterprise system. A candidate should therefore ask whether a role expects mainly configuration, or whether it also includes development of custom workflows or code.
Integrate enterprise systems
Enterprise software may need to exchange information with systems already in use, including CRM and ERP platforms. The engineer helps plan and implement those connections, taking account of the customer’s data and surrounding environment. The precise integration work varies with the product and project; the sources do not establish a standard technology stack for the role.
Integration is an important part of making software useful within an organization rather than leaving it isolated. The work may involve understanding which systems are in scope and how the new implementation relates to the customer’s existing setup. The cited implementation description names CRM and ERP integrations, but does not specify protocols, middleware, vendors, or a universal architecture. Those details must come from the particular product and engagement, not from the job title alone.

Some roles emphasize configuration and implementation; others also involve creating or adapting workflows in code. EY’s description of forward-deployed engineering includes shaping solutions and writing production-quality code. Wipro’s role descriptions also associate customer delivery with building or adapting workflows (Wipro). Ask what “coding” means in a particular posting: it may be central to the job, or only one part of a broader implementation assignment.
It is worth distinguishing code contribution from code ownership. A posting may describe solution shaping or workflow adaptation without making clear how much production development the engineer personally owns. EY’s example specifically reaches production-quality code and continues through deployment and early sustainment; that is evidence of one role’s scope, not a requirement for all implementation engineers. If coding is a key reason to pursue a position, clarify what is built, how much of the role is development, and whether responsibility continues once code is deployed.
Test, troubleshoot, and prepare deployment
The engineer helps validate the solution, identify problems, and resolve issues before or during deployment. Testing can reveal whether the configured product and its integrations behave as intended in the customer’s environment. The implementation descriptions identify testing, troubleshooting, and deployment as common work, but do not prescribe one test method or release process.
These tasks connect the solution design to what the customer will actually receive. An implementation that has been configured or integrated still needs to be checked and issues addressed before it is ready for use. The exact validation responsibilities may be shared with customer teams or other specialists, and no single handoff point is established. Job descriptions should be read for whether the engineer is expected to prepare deployments, participate in them, or own them.

Document, train, and guide customer teams
Implementation work does not end with a working technical setup. Engineers may document decisions and provide customer guidance, training, or enablement so users and administrators can operate the delivered solution. GitLab’s Professional Services Engineer handbook summarizes one such scope: “Professional Services Engineers engage with customers to provide installation, migration, training, and advisory services” (GitLab Professional Services Engineer handbook).

Documentation and enablement are practical parts of delivery: customer teams need guidance about the implementation and how to work with it after deployment. The precise audience and format are not fixed by the sources. Some roles may emphasize training or advisory work, while another may focus more heavily on technical implementation. This is one reason professional-services work can overlap with engineering without being identical to a software-development role.
Relay recurring issues and support early operation
Because the engineer sees how the product behaves in real customer environments, they can report repeated problems and implementation lessons to product and engineering teams. GitLab and Wipro describe this feedback as part of customer-facing delivery. Depending on the engagement, the engineer may also help the customer through the period after launch; EY includes early sustainment in its forward-deployed description.
Feedback can concern recurring customer problems or lessons about how implementation is carried out. The purpose is to bring relevant observations from delivery back to internal teams, rather than treating every customer issue as isolated. The sources support this feedback loop but do not claim that an individual engineer controls product priorities or guarantees that a reported issue will lead to a change. Similarly, early support may be part of one engagement’s scope and absent from another.

Job titles overlap. “Embedded engineer,” “implementation engineer,” “professional-services engineer,” “customer-delivery engineer,” and “forward-deployed engineer” may describe related work, but the labels alone do not tell you who owns what. Compare the actual duties along four dimensions:
| Dimension | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Customer proximity | Whether the engineer works directly with customer teams and their operational constraints. |
| Production coding | Whether the work is mainly configuration and implementation, or includes building and owning production code. |
| Lifecycle scope | Whether responsibility ends with installation or extends through design, deployment, enablement, and early sustainment. |
| Technical domain | Whether “embedded” means customer-embedded delivery or hardware-adjacent software engineering. |
For example, GitLab’s professional-services description emphasizes installation, migration, training, and advisory services, while EY’s forward-deployed description includes solution design and production code through deployment and early sustainment. These examples illustrate differences in scope; they do not define universal boundaries between the job families.
The same comparison helps explain why job titles can be misleading. “Professional services” may signal customer-facing implementation and advisory work, but the specific duties still need checking. “Forward-deployed” can indicate close work with a strategic customer and, in EY’s example, production-quality coding. Neither label guarantees a particular amount of coding, level of customer access, or length of post-deployment support at another employer.
There is no universal line separating implementation consulting, professional services, customer delivery, and forward-deployed engineering in the sources reviewed. Compare the scope the employer actually states, rather than treating one title as an industry-wide definition. The most useful comparison is concrete: what does the engineer deliver, who is the customer-facing partner, and which stages are included?

- Customer work: Which customer stakeholders will the engineer work with, and how directly?
- Technical delivery: Is success based on configuration, integrations, custom workflows, production code, or a mix?
- Project stages: Does the role cover discovery, deployment, customer enablement, or post-launch support?
- Feedback duties: Is the engineer expected to carry recurring product issues and implementation insights back to internal teams?
- Hardware context: Do the requirements mention firmware or device-level components, indicating embedded-systems engineering instead?
These questions help expose mismatches between a broad title and the job’s actual day-to-day work. They also clarify whether the position is primarily customer delivery, hands-on software engineering, or a combination.
For a candidate, it can help to ask where the role’s responsibility starts and ends: does it begin with discovery, or after a solution has already been selected? Does it stop at deployment, or include early sustainment? How much production code is expected compared with configuration, integration, training, and advisory work? These are not questions with one answer for the field; they are ways to uncover the employer’s intended scope.
For a hiring team, the same clarity prevents an overly broad role description from obscuring what the person will own. If the need is primarily installation, migration, training, or advice, say so. If the role must shape a solution and write production-quality code, state that as well. The sources show that both kinds of work can be customer-facing, but do not show that every organization combines them in one position.

What varies from one engagement to another
Responsibility depends on the company, product, customer, seniority, and implementation environment. A vendor may assign installation, migration, training, and advice to a professional-services engineer; a forward-deployed position may add solution shaping and production-code ownership. Some work spans the full path from requirements to early operation, while other roles cover only part of it.
Customer context also affects what is feasible. Systems, data, workflows, and operating constraints are specific to the organization, so the engineer’s technical approach cannot simply be copied from one customer to another without considering the environment. The evidence supports this customer-specific focus, but does not establish universal requirements for a particular industry, regulatory setting, toolset, travel schedule, or project duration. Those are details to verify with the employer or project owner.
Accordingly, neither the title nor one employer’s description establishes an industry-wide standard. The most reliable guide is the specific posting or project scope: what systems the engineer will touch, what deliverables they own, how much production coding is expected, and when their responsibility ends. The available sources do not provide a standard salary, market-size figure, or implementation cost, so those should not be inferred from the role description.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the role matters to enterprise software delivery
Enterprise software has to work within a particular organization’s systems and routines, not just demonstrate features in a generic setup. An engineer who understands both the product and customer environment can help translate requirements into a workable implementation, address integration and configuration issues, and guide customer teams through adoption. When recurring obstacles are fed back to product and engineering teams, those lessons can inform improvements to the product or its delivery approach.
The value is therefore not simply being physically or organizationally close to a customer. It comes from turning customer-specific constraints into a solution that can be implemented, validated, used, and supported within the agreed scope. For some employers that means coordinating configuration, integration, testing, and enablement; for others it may include production coding and early sustainment. The common thread is delivery in the customer’s environment, not one fixed list of tasks.

Frequently asked questions
Is an embedded engineer the same as an embedded-systems engineer?
Not necessarily. In this article, an embedded engineer is embedded with a customer to help implement enterprise software. An embedded-systems engineer works on software close to hardware, potentially including operating-system components, drivers, middleware, and hardware interaction. Check whether the role describes customer delivery or device-level engineering.
Do embedded engineers write code?
Some do, but coding is not universal across these roles. An implementation job may focus on configuration, integrations, testing, training, or advisory services. Some forward-deployed roles also shape solutions and write production-quality code. Check the posting for whether coding is central, occasional, or not part of the stated scope.
Do they stay involved after deployment?
It depends on the engagement. Some descriptions include early sustainment or support after launch; others may focus on installation and implementation tasks. Ask where responsibility ends and whether post-launch support is included.
Are implementation engineer and forward-deployed engineer interchangeable titles?
No universal boundary is established by the sources. The titles can overlap, but employers use them for different combinations of customer proximity, coding, and lifecycle responsibility. Compare the stated duties rather than relying on the title alone.
What does a professional-services engineer do?
One official GitLab handbook describes Professional Services Engineers as providing customers with installation, migration, training, and advisory services. Other employers may define the role differently, so use that description as an example rather than a universal rule.
