Terafab is a proposed Tesla-and-SpaceX chip-manufacturing system, not an operating semiconductor megafab. Company materials describe one site that would combine chip design, lithography-mask design, logic and memory fabrication, advanced packaging, and rapid test-and-iterate cycles. The long-term headline is a target of 1 terawatt of compute hardware per year; that figure is an ambition expressed in compute or power terms, not a current chip count, wafer-start figure, or verified production rate.

Near term, Tesla has described a much smaller research fab at Giga Texas, costing roughly $3 billion and producing a few thousand wafers per month for production-like process experiments. SpaceX is expected to lead the initial scaled-up phase, while the final deployment, financing, schedule, yields, and operating model remain unsettled.

What Terafab is supposed to be

Terafab is the name used for a proposed in-house semiconductor effort serving Tesla, SpaceX and their affiliated AI projects. Its stated purpose is to bring more of the chip-development chain under one corporate umbrella instead of separating design, mask creation, wafer fabrication, memory, packaging and validation among unrelated suppliers.

The Terafab project site presents an integrated factory covering logic, memory and advanced packaging. A SpaceX filing expands that scope to include chip design, lithography-mask design, fabrication of logic and memory, packaging and fast test-and-iterate loops. In practical terms, the plan is to shorten the path from a workload requirement to a tested chip revision: engineers could alter a design, manufacture samples, package them and evaluate them in the intended vehicle, robot or spacecraft system.

That integration is a proposed operating model, not evidence that all of those capabilities already exist in one facility. The same company documents describe the rationale as reducing exposure to future shortages, improving optimization for internal workloads and potentially lowering costs. Those are objectives and expectations; no source establishes that Terafab has yet delivered lower prices, higher performance or better yields.

What the 1 TW-per-year figure actually means

Terafab’s site displays “Terafab output 1 TW/Year” and compares it with “Current annual U.S. consumption .5 TW.” SpaceX describes 1 terawatt per year as a long-term goal for compute hardware. The wording matters because a terawatt is a unit of power, not a semiconductor production unit.

A fab normally reports capacity through measures such as wafer starts per month, die per wafer, process node, package count or annual revenue. Terafab’s headline instead uses a power or compute-capacity framing. It does not tell readers how many wafers would run, how many chips would be produced, what mix of logic and memory would be made, or how much of the figure would represent delivered hardware rather than design capacity.

The most defensible interpretation is therefore a strategic scale target for the computing hardware needed by Tesla and SpaceX. It is not current annual output, and it should not be converted into a precise chip count without assumptions about architecture, power draw, utilization, packaging and product mix. No independent capacity validation is reported, and the company has not published a production figure showing that the target is close to being met.

Two different projects are being discussed

The Tesla research fab

On Tesla’s FY2026 first-quarter earnings call, Elon Musk said Tesla would build a research fab on the Giga Texas campus. He estimated “probably a $3 billion-ish initiative” and said it would be capable of “a few thousand wafers per month.” He described the facility as a way to test ideas and determine whether processes work under production-like conditions.

This is a pilot and process-development effort, not the same thing as a fully scaled Terafab. A few thousand wafers per month can support experimentation, design validation and early production learning, but it does not establish the output of a future high-volume facility. Musk’s estimate is also a public projection rather than a completed budget or audited capacity.

The planned scaled-up Terafab

Musk said SpaceX would take care of the initial phase of scaled-up Terafab and that later responsibilities were still to be determined. That distinction prevents a common misunderstanding: Tesla’s research fab and the 1-TW ambition are related, but they are not interchangeable milestones. The first is a smaller facility intended to learn; the second is a long-term industrial capacity goal whose site, governance, financing and detailed schedule have not been disclosed.

Intel’s role and the 14A process target

SpaceX’s filing says Intel joined the project in early April 2026 and highlights Intel’s ability to design, fabricate and package high-performance chips. Musk said on Tesla’s earnings call, “We plan to use Intel’s 14A process, which is state-of-the-art and in fact, not yet totally complete.” He added, “By the time TeraFab scales up, 14A will be probably fairly mature or ready for prime time.”

Those statements identify a process target, not a demonstrated production result. Intel 14A was described by Musk as not yet complete at the time of the call, so the eventual schedule would depend on process readiness, design-rule stability, equipment qualification, packaging integration and yield learning. A node name alone does not specify the final transistor configuration, library availability, memory technology, package design or performance achieved in Terafab products.

The available filings and statements do not disclose the commercial terms of Intel’s participation, any licensing arrangement, the division of engineering labor, equipment ownership or the amount of hands-on manufacturing support. On October 7, 2026, Tom’s Hardware reported that Intel chief executive Lip-Bu Tan had reaffirmed Intel’s participation. The same report said Musk described Terafab as building and operating its own fab and suggested that TSMC might sublease part of it. That sublease idea remains a proposal, not a completed agreement, and does not establish that TSMC will operate Terafab or manufacture its chips.

What chips Terafab is intended to make

Vehicle and robot inference chips

The project site associates AI5 with Full Self-Driving and Tesla Optimus, and AI6 with Optimus. SpaceX’s filing groups these products as chips optimized for terrestrial edge computing and inference. Edge inference means processing sensor and control data close to the vehicle or robot rather than sending every decision to a remote data center.

That workload favors predictable latency, power efficiency, safety features, and tight integration with cameras, sensors, actuators and software. A captive design-and-manufacturing loop could let engineers tune memory bandwidth, accelerator blocks, interfaces and package characteristics for those systems. None of the cited materials, however, publishes final AI5 or AI6 specifications, transistor counts, benchmark scores, production volumes or confirmed Terafab manufacturing locations.

Space-computing chips

The site associates a D3 chip with space applications. SpaceX describes a second category of hardware optimized for the space environment and orbital compute infrastructure. Space hardware may require different thermal, radiation, reliability, power-delivery and packaging choices than a terrestrial vehicle or robot.

The filing’s language indicates that Terafab is being designed around internal missions rather than an announced merchant foundry service. There is no disclosed catalog in which outside companies can order wafers or reserve capacity. The project could eventually support multiple internal product families, but the available information does not establish customer commitments or a public chip roadmap beyond the named associations.

How an integrated fab could change Tesla and SpaceX’s hardware work

Shorter design-to-test cycles

Combining design, masks, fabrication, packaging and validation could reduce handoffs between companies. A team could identify a workload bottleneck, revise a chip or package, run a limited wafer lot, and test the result in a representative vehicle, robot or spacecraft system. Faster iteration is especially valuable when software, silicon and mechanical systems must be tuned together.

The benefit depends on execution. Internal ownership does not automatically make each loop faster: mask turnaround, equipment availability, packaging queues, quality controls and yield learning can still dominate schedules. The company has stated the goal of rapid iteration, but no measured cycle-time improvement has been published.

Workload-specific optimization

A captive fab could prioritize the characteristics that matter to Tesla and SpaceX instead of optimizing for a broad commercial market. For terrestrial inference, that might mean balancing accelerator throughput with vehicle power and thermal limits. For orbital systems, it could mean emphasizing radiation tolerance, long service life and efficient operation where maintenance is difficult.

Such specialization can improve system-level results when volumes are large enough to justify custom silicon and packaging. It can also reduce flexibility: a design optimized for one internal workload may have less resale value or be harder to repurpose if product plans change.

Potential supply resilience and cost control

The stated rationale includes reducing exposure to future chip shortages and potentially lowering costs. Owning more of the process could give the companies greater visibility into schedules and allow them to reserve capacity for strategic products. It might also reduce markups or coordination costs if volumes are high.

Those possible benefits must be weighed against the capital cost of cleanrooms, lithography and packaging equipment, specialist staffing, maintenance, process qualification and depreciation. No public figures demonstrate that Terafab will have lower unit costs than purchasing chips from established suppliers. A fab can improve control while increasing fixed costs, particularly during a long ramp when utilization and yields are low.

Terafab will not eliminate outside suppliers

SpaceX says it expects to continue sourcing a significant portion of its compute hardware from third parties. Terafab is therefore best understood as an additional internal source for selected workloads, not a declaration of complete supply-chain independence.

External suppliers can provide technologies or volumes that an internal fab does not yet support, including mature-node components, specialized memories, analog and power devices, sensors, substrates and high-volume products. Maintaining outside relationships also provides a fallback if a Terafab process slips, yields poorly or cannot meet demand.

The likely supply-chain model is mixed: internal design and manufacturing for strategically important chips, combined with third-party sourcing for other components and overflow capacity. That approach preserves optionality but means Terafab’s success cannot be measured simply by asking whether Tesla or SpaceX still buys chips elsewhere.

How Terafab compares with a conventional foundry model

The following framework separates what the project claims from what remains unknown.

Dimension Terafab proposal What is established
Integration scope Logic, memory, advanced packaging, chip design and lithography-mask design These capabilities are described in company materials; integrated operation has not been demonstrated publicly.
Customer model Primarily captive capacity for Tesla, SpaceX and related workloads No merchant-foundry service or outside-customer commitments are disclosed.
Near-term capacity A Tesla research fab at a few thousand wafers per month Musk’s FY2026 Q1 estimate; construction completion and actual operating capacity are not established.
Long-term scale 1 TW per year of compute hardware A company goal expressed in power or compute terms, not verified wafer or chip output.
Process technology Intel 14A is the stated target Musk said the process was not yet totally complete; implementation details are undisclosed.
Economics and yield Potentially lower costs and better control No Terafab cost, yield, performance or utilization results have been published.
External sourcing Internal capacity alongside suppliers SpaceX expects to continue obtaining a significant share of compute hardware from third parties.

What has not been announced

Readers should treat several basic project questions as open:

  • No construction-completion date or initial production date has been established.
  • No wafer capacity for the scaled Terafab has been published.
  • No production yield, defect-density, utilization or cost-per-chip data are available.
  • Final financing, governance and responsibility after SpaceX’s initial scaled-up phase remain undisclosed.
  • No customer commitments or public offer of foundry capacity to unrelated companies has been announced.
  • The terms of Intel’s participation, including licensing and manufacturing assistance, are not public.
  • No independent benchmark or third-party validation confirms the 1-TW capacity ambition.

These gaps are normal for an early industrial proposal, but they prevent a reliable forecast of launch dates, prices or performance. Announced intent should not be described as current manufacturing output.

What to watch as the project develops

  1. Physical construction and equipment orders: Evidence of a completed cleanroom, installed lithography tools and qualified packaging lines would distinguish plans from operating capability.
  2. Process qualification: Look for published information on Intel 14A readiness, design kits, test wafers, yield learning and package qualification.
  3. Product-level disclosures: AI5, AI6 and D3 specifications, tape-out announcements or deployment data would show which chips are actually entering the program.
  4. Capacity definitions: Any future capacity statement should clarify whether it means wafer starts, packaged chips, compute throughput or power-equivalent hardware.
  5. Supplier strategy: Details about continued third-party sourcing will reveal whether Terafab is a supplement, a primary source for selected chips or a broader manufacturing platform.
  6. Independent validation: Audited production figures, customer shipments and external testing would provide stronger evidence than aspirational targets.

When will Terafab start producing chips?

There is no established production start date in the cited announcements. Tesla’s research fab was described as a future facility for process experiments, and the scaled Terafab remains under development. Musk said, “So we’re still working out the details of the Terafab deployment.” Until the companies publish a construction milestone, tape-out, wafer run or shipment announcement, any specific launch year would be speculation.

Bottom line

Terafab could give Tesla and SpaceX tighter control over the complete path from AI-chip design to packaging and workload testing. That could matter for vehicle and robot inference, as well as specialized orbital computing, where power, latency, reliability and system integration are important. The near-term research fab and the long-term 1-TW ambition are very different scales, and Intel 14A is a stated target rather than a proven Terafab production process. The project’s real impact will depend on construction, yields, economics, product qualification and how much hardware the companies still buy from outside suppliers.
