A cockatoo’s tablet interactions demonstrate a basic limit of artificial intelligence: a system can only analyze evidence that someone has allowed an interface, dataset or workflow to record. Ellie, a Goffin’s cockatoo in a 2024 study, made patterned selections, persisted when requests were not fulfilled and reacted differently when researchers supplied the wrong outcome. Those behaviors became analyzable because people defined the tablet’s vocabulary, menus, response rules and recording process.
The lesson is not that a parrot speaks human language, or that a retail tablet can reproduce a scientific experiment. It is that measurement design determines what later counts as data—for animal communication and for enterprise AI alike.
What the cockatoo study actually tested
Cunha, Renguette, Stella and Mancini analyzed one Goffin’s cockatoo, Ellie, over three months. The 2024 ACI paper examined more than 2,600 selections on a touch-based speech board, including 477 persistence trials, 30 trials in which menu representations were randomly rearranged, and nine trials where the selected result was deliberately replaced with an unwanted or different item or activity.
The board contained more than 200 representations. Through positive-reinforcement training, Ellie learned associations between symbols and outcomes. Menus could include foods, toys, people, activities, perceptions, emotions, and action or preference terms. Selecting symbols in sequence could produce simple utterances, with the system speaking the associated words.

The researchers reported that Ellie’s interactions corresponded to recognized linguistic and biological communication functions and indicated intentional communication under the tested conditions. Their conclusion was specific: “Our findings suggest that the cockatoo’s interactions with the speech board align with established linguistic and biological communication functions and indicate intentional communication on her part.”
Behavior that counted as evidence
| Test or dataset | What happened | What it can support |
|---|---|---|
| More than 2,600 selections | Selections accumulated across three months of interaction. | Analysis of recurring choices and communication functions in this program. |
| 477 persistence trials | Ellie continued seeking requested outcomes when they were not immediately fulfilled. | Persistence rather than a single accidental touch. |
| 30 randomized-menu trials | Representations were rearranged; Ellie selected “sunflower seed” in 20 trials. | Sensitivity to the representation-to-outcome mapping under a controlled change. |
| 9 substituted-outcome trials | Researchers delivered an unwanted or different item or activity. | A test of whether her response changed when the expected result did not occur. |
| Corroboration rates | The paper reports 76.6% corroboration for selections in the randomized-menu task and 92% for fulfilled selections in the analyzed dataset. | Agreement between a selection and the outcome or interpretation recorded by the researchers. |
“Corroboration” is not a measure of human-language fluency. It describes how often a selection was supported by the observed outcome or the study’s coding. The figures therefore belong to this protocol, bird and interface, not to cockatoos as a species.

Why an interface changes the evidence
Ellie did not present evidence to an interpretation-free machine. Humans selected the available symbols, organized menus, chose touch as the interaction method, decided which outcomes would follow selections, and established what would be logged. Those decisions formed the evidence pipeline before any analysis began.
The same structure appears in AI systems. A model may be highly accurate relative to its inputs while missing events that were never captured, labels that were never created, or signals that the workflow excluded. Adding a human reviewer at the end cannot reliably recover information that was filtered out at the beginning.

Six questions for an evidence-aware AI workflow
- Which signals are admitted? List the records, sensor readings, documents, conversations and interface events the system can receive, then identify important events that remain outside it.
- Who chooses the representations? Examine categories, labels, menu options and data schemas for assumptions that could make some states impossible to record.
- How are outcomes validated? Define what counts as confirmation, disagreement, an unfulfilled request or an ambiguous result before measuring model performance.
- Does behavior persist when expected results change? Test whether a user, process or agent repeats or revises an action when a reward, recommendation or destination is unavailable.
- Can another setting reproduce the finding? Re-run the measurement with different operators, data sources, devices or populations rather than treating one interface as universal.
- What can be generalized? Separate evidence about the tested representation from claims about the underlying person, animal, organization or environment.
These checks do not make a model omniscient. They make the boundary of its knowledge visible.
What “can a cockatoo communicate with a tablet?” really means
Yes, a trained cockatoo can use a tablet-based speech-board interface to make selections associated with requested objects, activities or preferences. Ellie’s persistence and changed responses when outcomes were altered are consistent with purposeful use of that interface.

That answer has important limits. Ellie had access only to the menus and destination options created for her. A different vocabulary, menu layout or response rule could produce different selections. The study does not establish human-like semantics, unrestricted conversation, or generalization to other cockatoos. It is a controlled single-animal case study shaped by Ellie’s training history, environment and repeated interaction with caregivers.

- A tablet is a host for an interface; the device alone does not provide the trained vocabulary, enclosure, app behavior, reinforcement schedule or research controls.
- Any communication setup should be compatible with the bird’s physical access, safety and welfare needs.
- Selections should not be treated as reliable evidence without observing the resulting behavior and recording context.
- A consumer arrangement should not be presented as a replication of the ACI study.
Vocal learning is relevant—but not the same as language
Parrots and cockatoos are established vocal learners, although much of the research literature has historically focused on oscine songbirds. A 2021 PLOS ONE study examined three male cockatiels exposed to a human-whistled 22-note melody. The birds learned to imitate the sequence; under the study’s recording conditions, two synchronized their singing with playback.

The sequence was played up to 30 times per day. Separate recording channels captured the playback and the bird’s vocalization. The imitation developed gradually, and by fewer than 220 days post-hatch, human observers could recognize the vocalizations as imitations of the model melody.
Those findings concern vocal imitation under a specific stimulus and controlled recording setup. The birds were hand-raised, the sample contained three males, and the result should not be generalized to every cockatoo or parrot. Imitating a melody is also not equivalent to using human-like words, syntax or open-ended semantics. Together, the studies show why communication claims need a precise description of the signal, training, interface and test.
How to judge claims about animal interfaces and AI
When a system appears to understand a request, ask what was actually measured. A strong claim should identify the available representations, the training history, the expected outcome, the treatment of errors and the conditions under which the result was reproduced.

| Claim | Evidence needed | Common overreach |
|---|---|---|
| “The selection was intentional.” | Persistence, sensitivity to changed outcomes and controls for accidental contact. | Assuming one successful touch proves a general vocabulary. |
| “The model understands the situation.” | Coverage of relevant signals, tests with missing or conflicting inputs and independent outcome checks. | Confusing accuracy on recorded fields with knowledge of the whole situation. |
| “The result generalizes.” | Replication across animals, operators, interfaces, environments or datasets. | Extending a single interface’s behavior to a species or all users. |
| “The evidence is complete.” | An audit of excluded events, unavailable labels and unrecorded context. | Treating the database as reality rather than a designed sample of it. |
The practical takeaway for AI builders
Improve the evidence pipeline before tuning the model. Add ways to record uncertainty, rejected options, changed outcomes, missing context and user corrections. Preserve the original event and the representation shown to the user, not just the final label. Test the system after menus, schemas, prompts or sensor inputs change. Report which conclusions apply only to the measured interface.
Ellie’s case makes this principle memorable because the interface is visible: someone had to decide which symbols she could press. In many AI deployments, the same decisions are hidden inside forms, database fields, permissions and logging defaults. The unseen choices can determine what the model is able to “know” long before an algorithm produces an answer.
