El Niño usually makes large parts of the Amazon drier during particular seasons, but it does not affect every subregion in the same way. By shifting tropical atmospheric circulation, it can reduce rainfall, lower rivers and groundwater, and leave soils and vegetation unusually dry. People generally ignite Amazon fires for land clearing or other purposes; El Niño-related dryness makes those fires escape their intended boundaries and spread through forest understory. The severe 2023 drought cannot be assigned to El Niño alone: World Weather Attribution found that El Niño and climate change reduced rainfall by roughly similar amounts, while human-caused warming supplied the extra heat and evaporation that made agricultural drought much worse.
What El Niño does to Amazon rainfall
El Niño is a periodic warming of the tropical Pacific Ocean that reorganizes atmospheric circulation across the tropics. Rising air, descending air, pressure patterns and moisture transport all shift. NASA describes the result as a redistribution of rainfall: some regions become wetter while others experience drought. Much of the Amazon is commonly on the dry side of that redistribution, especially during strong events, but the sign and size of the change depend on location and season.
The Amazon basin covers about 4.6% of global land area yet receives approximately 13% of global continental precipitation. A change in its seasonal rains therefore affects river transport, agriculture, ecosystems and fire conditions over a very large area. “Drier Amazon” is not a single basin-wide reading; rainfall deficits can be concentrated in one part of the basin while another area sees a smaller decline or an increase.

El Niño teleconnections are not uniform across the year. A rainfall response that is clear in the southern or southwestern basin during one season may be weak in northern Amazonia during another. The most useful question is therefore not whether El Niño makes “the Amazon” dry, but which subregion, during which months, compared with its normal seasonal rainfall.

How reduced rain becomes drought
Rainfall is the first link, but drought develops through several connected parts of the water cycle.
Meteorological drought
Meteorological drought means a deficit in precipitation relative to the local climate baseline. El Niño can create this deficit by diverting or weakening moisture-bearing circulation. It is a measurement of what fell from the sky, not yet a complete description of how much water crops, forests or people lost.

When less rain enters the basin, rivers, floodplain lakes and groundwater recharge more slowly. River levels fall, navigation becomes difficult, water intakes can be stranded and fish habitat changes. Lower water tables also reduce the underground moisture available to plants during rain-free periods. NASA’s Douglas Morton described lower rainfall, river levels and water tables as a classic El Niño response that increases the chance of fires escaping into standing rainforest.

Agricultural drought
Agricultural drought combines inadequate rainfall with the atmosphere’s demand for water. Hotter air increases evaporation from soil and transpiration from plants. Even if rainfall reduction is similar to that caused by El Niño, additional heat can turn a moderate rainfall deficit into severe crop and vegetation stress. This distinction is central to understanding 2023: the drought affecting available moisture for agriculture was substantially more severe than rainfall totals alone would suggest.
Soil and fuel drying
Dry soils absorb less water into shallow roots, leaf litter loses moisture and grasses, shrubs and fallen branches become easier to ignite. In intact rainforest, a humid understory normally limits fire spread. During an extended dry season, that natural resistance weakens, allowing flames from a nearby cleared plot or pasture to move into forest.
Why El Niño raises wildfire risk without directly starting most fires
El Niño does not generally provide the ignition for Amazon fires. People usually light fires to clear fields, manage pasture, burn crop residues or dispose of vegetation. The climate signal changes what happens after ignition.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Human ignition: A land manager or another person starts a fire for a specific purpose.
- Drying of fuels: Reduced rain lowers leaf-litter, grass, branch and soil moisture; heat increases evaporation.
- Loss of forest resistance: A drier understory no longer contains flames as effectively as a wet one.
- Escape from the intended area: Wind or a smoldering edge carries fire beyond a field, pasture or burn pile.
- Understory and canopy damage: Flames can spread through standing rainforest, kill trees and leave additional dry debris for later fires.
This is why fire counts and burned area can rise even when the immediate ignition source is unchanged. A person’s decision supplies the spark; drought determines how far that spark can travel and how difficult suppression becomes.

Why repeated fires are especially damaging
Rainforest that has burned once often contains more dead wood, open gaps and fast-drying grasses. A subsequent dry season can therefore produce more severe burning than the first one, even without a proportional increase in cleared area. Fire also removes vegetation that would otherwise shade and humidify the ground, reinforcing the conditions that support later spread.
What happened during the 2023 Amazon drought
The 2023 event combined different rainfall deficits across the basin with exceptional heat and high evaporative demand. Southwestern Amazonia was notably dry from November 2022 to February 2023, while northern Amazonia experienced a major deficit from June to August. During the July–November dry season, fire activity was particularly intense in northern and western areas.
That geography matters. A drought that begins in one part of the basin can lower regional river levels before another area enters its own dry season. Communities may therefore experience transport, fisheries, drinking-water or agricultural impacts at different times, rather than in one simultaneous basin-wide episode.

Attribution findings
World Weather Attribution’s 2024 analysis estimated that human-caused climate change made the 2023 meteorological drought about 10 times more likely. For the agricultural drought, which includes the effect of heat-driven moisture loss, the estimated increase was about 30 times. NOAA Climate.gov summarized the agricultural drought as approximately a one-in-50-year event in today’s climate.

These are likelihood estimates for defined drought metrics, not a claim that climate change supplied every missing millimeter of rain or caused every fire. They show that the event’s probability and severity were far higher in a warmer world.
El Niño versus climate change
Both influences matter, but they operate on different timescales and through different parts of the water balance.
| Factor | Primary mechanism | Typical timescale | Amazon consequence | Fire implication |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| El Niño | Changes tropical circulation and moisture transport | Seasonal to roughly a year, varying by event | Rainfall deficits in particular regions and seasons; lower rivers and water tables | Dries fuels and allows human-ignited fires to spread farther |
| Human-caused warming | Raises air temperature and atmospheric evaporative demand | Persistent, long-term trend | More moisture is removed from soils and vegetation; rainfall deficits become more damaging | Extends or intensifies flammable conditions and increases agricultural drought severity |
El Niño is therefore best understood as a short-lived regional trigger layered onto a warming baseline. Its rainfall signal can be strong in one season and weak in another. Warming continually shifts the background temperature and evaporation conditions, so the same rainfall deficit can now produce greater water stress than it did in a cooler climate.
What the 2023 evidence does and does not say
World Weather Attribution found that El Niño and climate change reduced rainfall by approximately similar amounts in the 2023 analysis. Climate change was especially important for the heat component, which amplified evaporation and agricultural impacts. It would be inaccurate to describe El Niño as the sole cause, just as it would be inaccurate to say El Niño played no role.

Other factors that amplify or reduce the risk
Atlantic Ocean conditions
Conditions in the tropical Atlantic can alter moisture transport into the basin and interact with Pacific-driven circulation. When Atlantic and Pacific influences favor dryness at the same time, rainfall deficits can become larger or last longer than an El Niño-only explanation would imply.
Deforestation and fragmentation
Clearing removes humid forest cover, exposes edges to sun and wind, and creates more land where people use fire. Fragmented forest generally dries faster than an unbroken interior. Deforestation therefore changes the landscape’s sensitivity to a dry season, even when the regional rainfall anomaly is the same.
Fire use and enforcement
The amount, timing and location of human burning determine how many potential ignitions exist. Restrictions, patrols, early detection and safer land-clearing methods can reduce escaped fires during a drought. Conversely, widespread burning during a dry-season rainfall deficit raises the chance that multiple fires escape at once and overwhelm local response capacity.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow to read Amazon drought and fire indicators
No single indicator captures the whole hazard. A practical monitoring picture combines climate, water and human-activity data.
- Rainfall anomaly: Compare recent precipitation with the local seasonal normal to identify meteorological drought.
- Temperature and evaporative demand: Persistent heat reveals whether rainfall losses are being magnified by faster moisture removal.
- River gauges and groundwater: Falling levels show hydrological effects that rainfall maps alone may miss.
- Soil moisture and vegetation stress: These indicate whether crops, grasses and forest fuels are drying.
- Active-fire detections and burned area: Satellite fire signals show where ignition and spread are occurring, but they do not by themselves identify who started a fire.
- Land-cover change: Recent clearing and forest fragmentation help explain why the same weather can produce different fire outcomes in neighboring areas.
Risk managers should examine the indicators together. A rainfall deficit with normal temperatures may have a different near-term fire outlook from the same deficit accompanied by record heat, low rivers and extensive new clearing.
What communities and land managers can do during an El Niño dry season
Reduce ignition opportunities
- Postpone agricultural burning when official conditions indicate high fire danger.
- Create and maintain wider firebreaks before the dry season rather than after a fire escapes.
- Keep burn piles away from forest edges, dry grass and drainage channels.
- Coordinate neighboring properties so one escaped fire cannot move across connected fuel.
Protect water and critical services
- Track river-level forecasts for drinking-water intakes, transport routes and fisheries.
- Prioritize water storage and supply for households, health facilities and livestock when levels fall.
- Plan alternate transport and emergency access for isolated communities during low-water periods.
Use targeted surveillance
Combine satellite fire alerts with local patrols and weather observations. A fire detected near a recently cleared area may require a different response from a remote understory fire inside standing forest. Rapid confirmation helps authorities direct crews before a small escaped burn becomes a landscape-scale event.
Quick Recap
Key takeaways
- El Niño often reduces Amazon rainfall in particular regions and seasons, but it does not impose one identical pattern across the entire basin.
- Lower rain can reduce river levels, groundwater recharge and soil moisture; heat then increases evaporation and agricultural stress.
- People usually ignite Amazon fires. Drought makes those fires more likely to escape fields or pastures and burn into standing rainforest.
- The 2023 drought involved El Niño, long-term warming, Atlantic conditions, deforestation and fire use. Attribution estimates found climate change made the meteorological drought about 10 times more likely and the agricultural drought about 30 times more likely.
- Rainfall, heat, water levels, fuel moisture, land cover and fire activity must be assessed together to estimate wildfire risk.
