eBay Money Back Guarantee can help eligible buyers when an order never arrives, arrives damaged or faulty, or materially differs from its listing. It is not automatic coverage for every purchase, a product warranty, or a way to override the seller’s policy on a change-of-mind return. Sellers have separate, conditional protections that depend on the transaction, evidence, and policy requirements.
This guide focuses on eBay’s U.S. policies. The rules may differ on other eBay sites, and live deadlines or terms can change. Check the policy applicable to the site where you checked out.
What eBay Money Back Guarantee covers
eBay says its Money Back Guarantee applies to most transactions, subject to eligibility requirements, exclusions, procedures, and deadlines. In general, an eligible buyer may seek a remedy if:
- The item does not arrive.
- The item arrives broken, damaged, or faulty in a way that was not clearly disclosed.
- The seller sends the wrong item or the item materially differs from the listing.
- The seller does not honor the return policy stated in the listing.
Buyers generally need to have checked out and paid on eBay using an eligible payment method, and they must follow the applicable reporting and return steps. A complaint alone does not guarantee a refund: eBay may review the listing, messages, tracking, photographs, and other evidence.

That distinction matters: the guarantee is a transaction remedy, not an automatic finding that the buyer is right whenever they are unhappy. A claim is stronger when it identifies the specific problem, connects it to what the listing said, and follows the process attached to the order. Buyers should use the order’s case or return options rather than relying only on informal messages or a separate route that may affect the eBay request.
Depending on the circumstances, buyer and seller may agree to a different solution, such as a replacement or a partial refund that lets the buyer keep the item. Those are possible resolutions, not outcomes every buyer can demand.
Does eBay buyer protection cover a damaged item?
It may. A damaged, broken, or faulty item can qualify when the condition was not clearly disclosed in the listing. A useful claim explains what was represented, what arrived, and how the two differ. Preserve the packaging and take clear photos of the item and damage before attempting a repair or disposal; evidence can help establish what happened, though it does not guarantee a particular decision.

Likewise, the wrong item being sent is a concrete mismatch; a minor difference that does not materially depart from the listing may be assessed differently. Keep the listing details and relevant messages available so the issue can be described against the actual representation, not just a general expectation.
For suspected counterfeits, eBay may require the buyer to cooperate with disposal. A buyer must not resell an item that eBay determines is counterfeit. Money Back Guarantee also does not cover losses caused by exchange-rate fluctuations imposed by the buyer’s bank, card issuer, or payment service provider.
Can I return an eBay purchase if the seller says “no returns”?
Often, a no-returns setting governs buyer remorse—not an eligible claim that the item is damaged, faulty, wrong, or materially different from the listing. If the item has one of those problems, a buyer may still be entitled to a return or refund under Money Back Guarantee, even when the listing says no returns.

A change-of-mind return is different. If you ordered the wrong size, changed your mind, or simply no longer want the item, the listing’s stated return policy generally controls. For an item that does not match its listing, the seller generally pays return shipping; for a remorse return, shipping responsibility follows the listing’s policy.

If the seller does not resolve it, the buyer may ask eBay to step in. In some cases, eBay may act or issue a refund without requiring the item to be returned. If a return is required, return it in the condition received: when it is used, damaged, or missing parts, the seller may be able to deduct the loss in value under the policy.
For buyers, the practical step is to choose the reason that accurately describes the problem and follow the return instructions provided for that request. Do not treat a damaged-item claim as a remorse return, or the reverse; the reason affects the applicable policy and who may be responsible for return shipping. For sellers, “no returns” is not a substitute for responding to an eligible item-not-as-described request. If the seller does not resolve the request within the applicable process, the buyer can ask eBay to review it.
What happens if an eBay order never arrives?
- Wait until the delivery or collection date passes. You can report the order as not received after the estimated or actual delivery or collection date shown for the order.
- Open the order in eBay and report the problem. Use the item-not-received option associated with the order so the case is tied to its transaction details.
- Allow the seller time to respond. eBay’s policy gives the seller up to three business days to provide tracking, a delivery update, or a refund.
- Ask eBay to step in if the issue remains unresolved. The policy sets a step-in window and says eBay may also step in itself in certain circumstances. In general, the buyer must report the missing item within 30 calendar days after the estimated or actual delivery date.
These are eBay policy time limits recorded in 2026, not general guarantees about how quickly a carrier investigation or refund will finish. Check the live policy and the dates in your order before relying on a deadline.
Before reporting, compare the order’s delivery estimate with the tracking information and make sure the date has passed. If the seller supplies an update or tracking information, review whether it actually shows delivery to the order address or an available collection record. If the matter remains unresolved after the seller’s response period, use the case’s option to ask eBay to step in within the policy window; do not assume that opening a request alone automatically completes the escalation.

Why delivery evidence matters
eBay may consider whether the parcel was delivered to the address in the order details or whether the buyer collected it. A seller should ship to that order address and use tracking integrated with eBay. For local pickup, eBay’s policy recognizes an in-app QR code scan or a six-digit pickup code as collection evidence.

Authenticity Guarantee shipments have additional proof requirements. eBay’s policy lists an integrated tracking number, a delivery scan at the authenticator with the date and matching address, and signature confirmation for orders totaling $750 or more. That $750 threshold is specific to those policy requirements; it is not a universal signature rule for all eBay orders.
For a seller, this is why shipping to a different address requested in a message can create a problem: the relevant delivery evidence is tied to the address in Order details. Tracking that is not integrated may also fail to provide the same policy evidence. For a buyer, a delivery scan does not necessarily answer every question on its own; the question is whether the evidence shows delivery to the relevant order address or collection under the applicable rules.
What does eBay seller protection cover?
Seller protection is not a blanket guarantee that a buyer’s claim, payment dispute, or loss will be rejected. eBay describes conditional protections for qualifying Money Back Guarantee cases and payment disputes, with eligibility that can depend on the seller, listing, shipping method, and facts of the claim.
For example, eBay says sellers who are not Below Standard may be eligible for specified protection on listings that offer free returns. It also describes reimbursing a seller when an item shipped with an eBay label is delivered after the seller has already issued a refund. Whether either provision applies depends on the specific policy conditions and case facts. Shipping an item, having a no-returns setting, or providing tracking alone does not establish that a seller is protected.
Evidence and careful handling matter for sellers. Ship to the address in the order details, retain relevant tracking and delivery records, and follow the instructions and deadlines shown in the case. For a return, document the item’s condition when it comes back and use the policy’s process rather than treating a no-returns setting as a defense to every claim.
Protection can also depend on what kind of dispute is open. A Money Back Guarantee request and a payment-provider dispute are not interchangeable routes, and eBay’s seller guidance describes protections only for qualifying situations. Sellers should read the notice for the specific case and submit the evidence requested there instead of assuming that a general seller-protection page settles the outcome.

How buyer and seller claims differ

This comparison describes the general policy distinctions; category-specific terms and the site used at checkout can change the result.
In other words, start by identifying which problem actually occurred. A buyer who simply changed their mind should check the listing’s return terms; one whose parcel is missing should use the delivery-date and evidence process; and one who received the wrong or damaged item should document the mismatch and follow the return instructions. On the seller side, return settings do not replace the need to respond, while shipping and case records help establish whether a conditional protection applies.
Limits, exclusions, and overlapping claims
- Deadlines and procedure count. Missing a reporting window, failing to respond, or not following return instructions can affect eligibility or the case outcome.
- Category exceptions apply. Some items and transaction types are excluded or handled specially. Authenticity Guarantee final-sale purchases have category-specific rules: some mismatch claims may not qualify, while shipping damage or a seller’s failure to honor a stated return policy may still qualify. Check the live rule for the category rather than assuming the general rule applies.
- It is not a warranty. As eBay puts it, “eBay Money Back Guarantee is not a product warranty.” It addresses qualifying transaction problems; it does not promise that a product will keep working or replace a manufacturer’s warranty.
- Duplicate routes can close an eBay case. If a buyer files a chargeback or a protection claim through the payment provider, eBay may close the corresponding open eBay request. The buyer cannot then open another eBay item-not-received or return request for that transaction.
- Seller protection is conditional. A seller should not assume protection against a chargeback or loss merely because an order was shipped or marked no returns.
These limits make it important to check the category and the payment path before choosing a remedy. In particular, a buyer should not expect to pursue duplicate eBay and payment-provider claims for the same transaction: opening a provider claim can change the status of the open eBay request and prevent a new eBay item-not-received or return request. If the purchase involves an Authenticity Guarantee final-sale category, review its specific terms rather than relying only on the general examples above.
