TSMC earns revenue by manufacturing chips designed by other companies. Its quarterly performance is therefore driven by customer demand for computing platforms, the amount of fab capacity those customers use, the process technologies they order, wafer volume, pricing and costs, and currency movements. The clearest way to read a quarter is to examine revenue, gross and operating margins, wafer shipments, exchange rates, platform mix, process-node mix and management guidance together—while keeping reported results separate from forecasts and unaudited monthly sales.
TSMC is a foundry, not a branded-chip seller
TSMC describes itself as a pure-play semiconductor foundry. It manufactures products designed by customers and does not design, manufacture or market semiconductor products under its own name. That business model changes the question an investor or analyst should ask. There is no single “TSMC chip” whose unit sales explain the income statement. Instead, revenue follows the volume and value of many customer programs produced across TSMC’s factories.
The company’s 2025 report says it manufactured 12,682 products for 534 customers using 305 distinct process technologies. Those products serve high-performance computing (HPC), smartphones, the Internet of Things (IoT), automotive, digital consumer electronics and other applications. TSMC’s annual report explains the strategic logic in one sentence: “By choosing not to design, manufacture or market any semiconductor products under its own name, the Company ensures that it never competes with its customers.” C.C. Wei is identified in that report as chairman and chief executive officer.

For revenue analysis, this means that end-market demand and manufacturing technology matter more than a consumer product launch. A strong quarter can result from more wafers for data-center accelerators, a richer mix of advanced smartphone processors, better factory utilization, or a favorable exchange rate. A weak quarter can reflect the opposite mix even when the company is still producing a large number of chips.

The main revenue drivers
1. Customer demand by platform
TSMC groups customer applications into platform categories. HPC is the largest category and includes computing applications such as data-center processors and accelerators. Smartphones are the second-largest category. The 2025 mix shows how concentrated the business is:
| Platform | Share of 2025 net revenue | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
| High-performance computing | 58% | Computing products, including data-center processors and accelerators |
| Smartphone | 29% | Mobile application processors and related smartphone silicon |
| Internet of Things | 5% | Connected devices and embedded applications |
| Automotive | 5% | Vehicle and automotive-control applications |
| Digital consumer electronics | 1% | Consumer devices outside the smartphone category |
| Other | 2% | Applications not assigned to the named categories |
HPC and smartphones together supplied 87% of 2025 net revenue. That concentration makes platform mix a first-order issue in every quarter: demand in those two categories can outweigh movements in the smaller categories. The mix is not fixed, however. In the fourth quarter, the management report summarized HPC at 55%, smartphones at 32%, IoT at 4%, automotive at 5%, digital consumer electronics at 1% and other applications at 3%.
Platform percentages describe where customers use the chips. They do not say which manufacturing node produced those chips, how many wafers were shipped, or what price TSMC received for each wafer.
2. Process technology and wafer value
Process technology is a separate lens on the same revenue. A platform such as HPC can use several nodes, and a single process node can serve multiple platforms. TSMC reports technology mix as a share of wafer revenue, not as an additional set of end markets to add to the platform percentages.
| Technology grouping | Share of 2025 wafer revenue | How TSMC defines or reports it |
|---|---|---|
| 3nm | 24% | Specific 3nm process generation |
| 5nm | 36% | Specific 5nm process generation |
| 7nm | 14% | Specific 7nm process generation |
| 7nm and below, combined | 74% | TSMC’s definition of advanced technologies |
Because 7nm-and-below technologies generated 74% of 2025 wafer revenue, leading-edge demand is central to the company’s economics. The annual figures establish the importance of that mix, but they do not by themselves prove that a particular change in node mix caused a specific change in gross margin. Capacity costs, ramp expenses, yields, depreciation, pricing and currency can all affect margins at the same time.
3. Wafer shipments, utilization and capacity
Revenue also depends on physical volume. TSMC reported 15.0 million 12-inch-equivalent wafer shipments in 2025, compared with 12.9 million in 2024. “12-inch equivalent” standardizes different wafer sizes into a common measure; it is a shipment-volume indicator, not a count of finished customer chips.

Utilization matters because semiconductor factories carry substantial fixed costs. When customers fill more available capacity, those costs are spread across more wafers. When demand falls and tools sit idle, the same costs can weigh more heavily on each wafer. The quarterly presentation and management commentary should be used to determine whether a margin move reflects utilization, a product or node ramp, cost inflation, or another factor; shipment volume alone cannot identify the cause.
4. Pricing, costs and capital intensity
Each technology generation has different selling prices and manufacturing costs. Advanced nodes generally require costly equipment, complex process integration and long qualification cycles. TSMC’s capital spending and factory-expansion plans therefore matter to future results, but spending is not the same as current revenue. Depreciation from new equipment, start-up costs and yield learning can affect margins before a new facility reaches mature utilization.
Read gross margin and operating margin together with management’s explanation of cost trends. A revenue increase with falling margins can indicate an unfavorable mix, lower utilization, ramp costs, higher expenses or currency effects. Revenue growth accompanied by expanding margins points to a different set of possibilities, such as stronger pricing, better utilization or a richer mix. The financial statements show the outcome; commentary is needed to establish the reason.
5. Foreign-exchange movement
TSMC reports in both New Taiwan dollars (NT dollars) and U.S. dollars in its investor materials. Because the exchange rate changes the translated value, the same operating quarter can show different growth rates in the two currencies. The 1Q26 conference presentation reported an average exchange rate of NT$31.59 per U.S. dollar, revenue growth of 6.4% sequentially in U.S.-dollar terms and 8.4% sequentially in NT-dollar terms. That difference is why a quarter should always be read with its stated currency and exchange-rate assumption.
What the 2025 numbers say about the business
| Measure | Reported figure | Comparison or qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Consolidated revenue | NT$3,809.05 billion | 31.6% above 2024, according to TSMC’s 2025 report |
| Consolidated revenue | US$122.42 billion | 35.9% above 2024 in U.S.-dollar terms |
| HPC platform | 58% of net revenue | Largest 2025 end-market category |
| Smartphone platform | 29% of net revenue | Second-largest 2025 end-market category |
| Advanced technologies | 74% of wafer revenue | 7nm and more advanced, under TSMC’s definition |
| 12-inch-equivalent wafers | 15.0 million | 2025 shipments; 12.9 million in 2024 |
These figures describe scale, concentration and technology exposure. They do not imply that HPC revenue equals 58% of wafer shipments, or that 74% of wafer revenue came from one customer. Platform and process tables classify the business along different axes.
How to read a TSMC quarterly result
Step 1: Identify the period and currency
First check whether every number covers a quarter, a year-to-date period or a full year. Then identify whether it is in NT dollars or U.S. dollars. Do not compare a quarterly U.S.-dollar figure with an NT-dollar annual figure, and do not treat a translated number as if it were a separate operating result.

TSMC’s monthly revenue disclosure is stated in millions of NT dollars and labels the 2026 monthly figures as unaudited. Monthly sales can signal direction, but they are not a substitute for the audited or formally reported quarterly statements.
Step 2: Separate reported actuals from guidance
On TSMC’s results page, actual results and the following quarter’s guidance appear in separate columns. At the October 13, 2026 check reflected in the available official information, 2Q26 actual net revenue was US$40.20 billion. A third-quarter results event was scheduled for October 15, 2026. Any Q3 revenue or margin range shown before that event was a forecast, not a reported result.
Use a clear label for each number: “reported,” “unaudited monthly,” or “guidance.” A forecast can be useful for understanding management’s expectations, but it should never be used to describe what the company already earned.
Step 3: Measure growth in both directions
Calculate sequential growth against the immediately preceding quarter and year-over-year growth against the same quarter a year earlier. Sequential growth shows the current operating trajectory; year-over-year growth controls for seasonal patterns and the prior year’s demand environment. Neither measure explains the cause by itself.
For 1Q26, TSMC reported US$35.90 billion of revenue. The presentation stated that revenue was up 6.4% sequentially in U.S.-dollar terms and 8.4% in NT-dollar terms. Keeping both comparisons visible prevents currency translation from being mistaken for a change in customer demand.
Step 4: Read gross and operating margins with revenue
Gross margin shows what remains after manufacturing costs; operating margin also reflects operating expenses. For 1Q26, TSMC reported a 66.2% gross margin and a 58.1% operating margin. Compare each margin with the prior quarter and the year-ago quarter, then consult management’s explanation before assigning a cause.

- Revenue up, margins up: could reflect favorable mix, pricing, utilization or cost control; confirm which factor management cited.
- Revenue up, margins down: could reflect ramp costs, lower utilization, unfavorable mix, higher expenses or currency; do not choose one without evidence.
- Revenue down, margins stable: may indicate disciplined cost management or a still-favorable technology mix.
- Revenue down, margins down: suggests weaker volume or mix combined with under-absorption or other cost pressure, but the release should identify the actual drivers.
Step 5: Check wafer shipments and the exchange rate
The 1Q26 presentation reported 4.174 million 12-inch-equivalent wafer shipments and the NT$31.59 average exchange rate. Compare shipment movement with revenue movement. Revenue rising faster than shipments can indicate a higher-value technology or platform mix; shipments rising faster than revenue can indicate a less valuable mix or pricing pressure. Those are analytical signals, not proof, so verify them against the mix tables and commentary.

Step 6: Read platform mix as one table
Compare HPC, smartphone, IoT, automotive, digital consumer electronics and other shares with the prior quarter and year-ago quarter. A change in the HPC share can result from HPC demand changing, smartphone seasonality, or both. The percentage is relative: one category can fall in share even while its absolute revenue rises if another category grows faster.
Step 7: Read process mix as a separate table
Next examine 3nm, 5nm, 7nm and the broader 7nm-and-below grouping. Do not add these percentages to platform percentages. Look for changes within the technology table and connect them to utilization, ramp timing, pricing and cost commentary.
Step 8: Finish with guidance and management commentary
Guidance captures management’s expectations at the date of the release. It is useful for testing whether the next quarter is expected to grow or contract, and whether margins are expected to change, but it is not a result. The 2025 annual report described robust AI-related demand entering 2026 while also saying macroeconomic uncertainty persisted. Treat both statements as management outlook rather than a guarantee.

- Start with the stated period and currency: US$35.90 billion of first-quarter revenue.
- Record the sequential comparison in both currencies: 6.4% in U.S. dollars and 8.4% in NT dollars.
- Record profitability: 66.2% gross margin and 58.1% operating margin.
- Check physical output: 4.174 million 12-inch-equivalent wafer shipments.
- Record the translation input: NT$31.59 average per U.S. dollar.
- Review the platform and process tables, then read management’s explanation for mix, utilization, costs and demand.
This sequence prevents a common analytical error: declaring that AI demand, advanced nodes or currency “caused” the quarter after looking at only one number. The figures establish what happened; the company’s commentary and period-to-period comparisons are needed to explain why.

How to compare quarters consistently
| Axis | Question to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue | What are sequential and year-over-year changes, and in which currency? | Establishes growth without confusing translation effects |
| Gross margin | Did manufacturing profitability expand or contract? | Signals mix, utilization, pricing and production-cost effects |
| Operating margin | Did operating expenses change the bottom line beyond gross profit? | Separates factory economics from company-wide expenses |
| Wafer shipments | Did physical volume move with revenue? | Helps distinguish volume from value or mix |
| Exchange rate | What average NT-dollar/U.S.-dollar rate was used? | Explains differences between currency presentations |
| Platform mix | Which end markets gained or lost share? | Shows customer-application concentration and seasonality |
| Process mix | How did 3nm, 5nm, 7nm and advanced-node shares change? | Shows technology exposure without conflating it with end markets |
| Guidance versus outcome | What did management forecast, and what was later reported? | Separates expectation quality from operating performance |
Use the same axes every quarter. Changing the metric set from one release to the next makes it easy to mistake a favorable presentation choice for an operating improvement.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Looking for a TSMC product launch: TSMC manufactures customer-designed products, so follow customer platforms and process technologies instead.
- Adding platform and node percentages: they are different classifications of the same revenue and must not be summed.
- Treating guidance as history: label every forecast and compare it with the later reported result.
- Mixing currencies: keep NT-dollar and U.S.-dollar figures in separate columns and record the exchange rate.
- Using monthly sales as audited earnings: monthly 2026 figures are identified as unaudited and do not provide the full margin, shipment and mix context of a quarter.
- Assuming advanced-node share automatically determines margin: node mix is important, but yields, depreciation, utilization, pricing, ramp costs and currency can change the result.
- Reading percentages as absolute revenue: a platform’s share can fall even when its revenue rises if another platform grows faster.
- Ignoring the comparison base: sequential, year-over-year and full-year comparisons answer different questions and should not be substituted for one another.
What the outlook can—and cannot—tell you
Management outlook is valuable because it ties current orders, capacity plans and expected mix to a forward period. It can indicate whether TSMC expects demand for HPC, smartphones or other platforms to strengthen, and whether margins may be affected by utilization or new-factory costs. It remains an estimate made under the information available at the time.
The annual report’s description of strong AI-related demand entering 2026 is therefore context for the revenue mix, not a promise of a particular quarterly figure. Macroeconomic uncertainty can alter customer inventories, device launches, capital spending and exchange rates before the next release. The proper test is to compare the stated guidance with the subsequent actual result and then examine which assumptions changed.

The 2025 annual-report figures, the 1Q26 conference presentation and the official quarterly-results page do not all have the same status. Annual and quarterly reports provide period results; monthly disclosures can be unaudited; and a results page can display future-quarter ranges before the conference call. In the official information available on October 13, 2026, 2Q26 actual revenue was visible and the Q3 event was scheduled for October 15. A reader using this guide after that event should check the newest official release before calling any Q3 number an actual.
The most reliable practice is simple: write down the period, currency, status (reported, unaudited or guidance), comparison base and source document for every number. Then read revenue, margins, shipments, exchange rate, platform mix, process mix and commentary as one connected set of evidence.
