Luxury-market growth is being driven by a combination of consumer spending power, experiences, regional demand, product desirability, pricing, and new discovery channels—not by one universal force. The broad luxury economy is currently more resilient than personal luxury goods because travel, hospitality, dining, and other experiences are growing faster than many tangible categories.
The most useful way to read the market is to separate total luxury spending from personal goods, nominal revenue from unit demand, and observed results from forecasts. Those distinctions explain why one region or category can expand while another contracts.
Start with the right definition of luxury-market growth
“Luxury market” can describe several different measurements. Bain & Company and Altagamma’s worldwide total includes both goods and experiences, while personal luxury goods cover a narrower set of products such as jewelry, watches, fashion, leather goods, beauty, and eyewear. A statement that the luxury market is growing is incomplete unless it identifies the scope, currency basis, geography, period, and channel.
| Measure | What it captures | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Total luxury spending | Goods plus experience categories such as hospitality, travel, dining, private aviation, yachts, and cruises | Shows how consumers allocate their overall luxury budget |
| Personal luxury goods | Branded products purchased for personal use | More directly reflects product demand, but excludes experience-led spending |
| Nominal value | Revenue at prevailing prices | Can rise because of price increases even when units sold do not |
| Constant-currency value | Growth after limiting exchange-rate effects | Improves comparisons between years and regions |
| Volume or customer growth | Units sold or number of active buyers | Indicates whether demand itself is broadening |
These measures should not be mixed. A brand can report higher revenue from a smaller number of customers paying more, while the category’s unit volume is flat. Conversely, a market may add customers while average spending falls.

What the latest market figures actually show
Bain & Company and Altagamma’s 2026 update estimates worldwide luxury spending at €1,443 billion in 2025. Its base-case forecast for total luxury spending in 2026 is €1,440–€1,470 billion, equivalent to 0%–2% growth at constant rates. That range is a scenario, not a settled outcome.
Personal luxury goods were estimated at €358 billion in 2025. The same 2026 update forecasts €365–€373 billion in 2026, or 2%–4% growth. Because personal goods are only one part of the wider total, their projected growth can exceed the broad market’s rate without contradicting it.
| Market measure | 2025 result | 2026 outlook | Qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Worldwide luxury spending | €1,443 billion | €1,440–€1,470 billion | Bain–Altagamma base case; 0%–2% growth at constant rates |
| Personal luxury goods | €358 billion | €365–€373 billion | Bain–Altagamma forecast; 2%–4% growth |
The update describes the market as stabilizing rather than returning to its earlier expansion pattern. Bruno Lannes, senior partner at Bain & Company, characterized the outlook this way: “The luxury market is stabilizing, but this is not a return to the old rhythm, it is the emergence of a new one.”

1. Consumer spending power and the size of the buyer base
Luxury growth ultimately depends on how much discretionary money consumers have and how widely that money is distributed. Employment, asset prices, interest rates, inflation, currency movements, and confidence affect whether people can justify a high-priced purchase. A strong group of wealthy clients can support a brand, but sustained category growth normally requires more than a handful of very large transactions.
Established high spenders
Affluent customers provide repeat purchases, high average order values, and demand for scarce or customized products. Their spending can remain resilient when middle-income shoppers delay purchases. However, even wealthy buyers can redirect budgets toward travel, homes, art, wellness, or other forms of consumption. Retention therefore depends on product novelty, service, trust, and access—not only on income.
Aspirational and occasional buyers
Aspirational consumers expand the addressable market, but they are more sensitive to prices, financing costs, and economic uncertainty. Bain’s 2025 study described a contracting and splintering consumer base and greater emphasis on perceived value. This makes broad-based growth harder: brands must preserve exclusivity while giving occasional buyers a convincing reason to participate.
The practical implication is to track customer count and purchase frequency alongside revenue. If revenue rises while active buyers and units fall, the result is value growth concentrated among a smaller group rather than broad demand expansion.

2. Experiences are supporting the wider luxury economy
Consumer sentiment toward luxury experiences is currently outpacing sentiment toward tangible goods. Luxury hospitality, private jets, yachts, cruises, fine dining, and gourmet food are among the areas identified as comparatively resilient in the 2026 update. Consumers may prefer spending on a memorable trip, a personal service, or a social occasion instead of adding another physical item.
This does not mean ownership has stopped mattering. It means luxury budgets are being allocated across a wider set of choices. A traveler who spends heavily on a hotel and dining itinerary has less discretionary money available for a watch or leather accessory, while the same trip may create opportunities for a brand located in a destination or hospitality setting.
Why experiences can grow faster
- Experiences create memories and social value that are difficult to compare purely by price.
- Travel and hospitality can be purchased as occasions, allowing consumers to justify a premium for service and convenience.
- Services can be refreshed through destinations, menus, itineraries, and personalization without relying on a new physical product every season.
- Affluent customers may view access, privacy, and time savings as more valuable than additional possessions.
For analysts, the key is to include experience categories when assessing the broad luxury economy, but not to use their resilience as evidence that every personal-goods category is healthy.
3. Regional divergence changes the global result
Luxury demand is not moving in one synchronized direction. The 2026 Bain–Altagamma outlook identifies the Americas as a source of strength, Europe and the Middle East as drags on overall performance, and China as recovering cautiously. Altagamma’s June 2026 summary likewise describes the Americas as driving personal-goods growth while Europe and the Middle East decline and China remains in cautious recovery.
Americas
Stronger performance in the Americas can lift global personal-goods figures even when other regions are weaker. The result should still be read as a regional contribution, not proof that every country or customer segment in the region is expanding.
Europe and the Middle East
Pressure in these regions can reflect local confidence, tourism flows, currency effects, and geopolitics. A global brand may see a different result in domestic purchases than in tourist spending, so regional totals can conceal important channel differences.
China
The current description is cautious recovery, not a blanket return to prior growth. Consumer confidence, travel patterns, policy, and the comparison base can all change the pace. Any statement about China should carry the report year and avoid presenting a forecast as a permanent trend.

Regional analysis should therefore report both the location of the sale and the customer’s residence where possible. Tourist purchases can make a market look stronger or weaker than its resident demand.

4. Pricing raises revenue, but it has a ceiling
McKinsey & Company and The Business of Fashion reported in 2025 that price increases accounted for more than 80% of luxury-sector growth between 2019 and 2023. That is a measure of value growth, not proof that more units or customers entered the market.
Price increases can improve revenue per item, reinforce scarcity, and protect gross margin. They can also push aspirational buyers out of the category. McKinsey and Business of Fashion’s January 2025 analysis said repeated increases were reaching a ceiling and weighing on demand, while Bain’s 2025 study found consumers becoming more selective and focused on quality, exclusivity, and practicality.
How to distinguish healthy price power
- Revenue per unit: reveals whether higher prices are doing the work.
- Units sold: shows whether physical demand is expanding or contracting.
- Full-price sell-through: indicates whether customers accept the price without promotion.
- Repeat purchase and retention: tests whether the value proposition survives the initial transaction.
- Customer mix: shows whether growth comes from new buyers, established clients, or a smaller elite group.
A premium is sustainable when customers perceive corresponding quality, design, craftsmanship, service, rarity, or cultural relevance. If price rises faster than perceived value, the brand may protect short-term revenue while weakening future volume.
5. Product desirability and category mix
Categories do not move together. Bain’s 2025 study reported stronger performance in jewelry and eyewear, resilient fragrance demand, pressure on shoes and leather goods, and polarization in watches. Its 2026 update continued to describe differences among categories, with jewelry and several areas holding up better than cosmetics, leather goods, and footwear.

Why jewelry can be resilient
Jewelry can serve as a gift, a marker of personal identity, and a store-of-value narrative, although those motivations vary by market and product. A category may also benefit from a wide ladder of price points, from accessible pieces to exceptional high jewelry.

Why footwear and leather goods can face pressure
These categories are more exposed to discretionary pullback, saturation, and repeated price increases. Consumers can postpone a purchase, buy fewer items, or switch to resale. Inventory decisions also matter because discounting can damage scarcity while excess stock ties up cash.
Why watches can polarize
Demand may split between highly sought-after pieces and products with weaker secondary-market interest. A category total can therefore hide very different results by brand tier, model, price, and distribution channel.
6. Resale is changing how consumers evaluate new goods
Bain’s 2026 update says roughly half of luxury shoppers consult the secondhand market before buying new and describes resale as thriving. Resale gives consumers a way to compare prices, judge durability, assess liquidity, and discover older designs. It also provides an entry route for buyers who cannot or do not want to pay full retail.
For primary-market brands, resale can have two opposite effects. It may introduce new customers to a brand and strengthen confidence in products that retain value. It can also expose large retail-to-resale price gaps or make consumers wait for a used item rather than buy new.
What resale signals
- Observed resale prices can influence a buyer’s perception of quality and investment risk.
- Authentication and condition standards affect trust in the category.
- Scarcity, repairability, and timeless design can support longer product lives.
- Brands must consider how distribution, limited editions, and pricing affect the secondary market.
The figure about secondhand research describes shopping behavior; it does not prove that resale independently causes total luxury-market growth.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. AI and digital discovery are reshaping the purchase journey
About half of luxury consumers already use AI somewhere in their purchase journey, according to Bain’s 2026 update. Consumers may use AI for discovery, comparison, recommendations, translation, product research, or itinerary planning. The statistic indicates changing behavior, not a causal estimate of AI’s contribution to market growth.

Digital tools matter because luxury decisions often involve extensive research before a store visit or purchase. A consumer can compare materials, dimensions, availability, historical pricing, reviews, authentication information, and resale listings before contacting a sales associate.

What brands need to get right
- Accurate, structured product information that systems can interpret.
- Clear provenance, care, sizing, and availability details.
- Consistent service between search, messaging, website, and physical locations.
- Human expertise for high-consideration or highly personalized purchases.
- Privacy and transparency when automated recommendations use customer data.
AI may improve discovery and conversion, but it cannot compensate for weak products, poor service, or an unconvincing value proposition.
How the drivers interact
The strongest growth cases combine several conditions. A desirable product reaches a customer with sufficient spending power, at a price that still feels justified, through a trusted channel, in a region with favorable confidence and tourism. If one element fails, another may partially offset it: a brand can use experiences to deepen relationships, resale visibility to attract new customers, or regional expansion to balance weakness elsewhere.
- Define the market: decide whether the analysis covers total luxury spending or personal goods.
- Choose the growth measure: separate nominal revenue, constant-currency value, units, customers, and spend per customer.
- Map geography: identify where demand originates and whether tourism affects the result.
- Break out categories: compare jewelry, eyewear, beauty, watches, footwear, leather goods, and experiences separately.
- Study the channel: include direct retail, e-commerce, travel retail, resale, and clienteling where data exists.
- Test the value proposition: examine price changes alongside sell-through, retention, and customer feedback.
- Label uncertainty: mark forecasts as scenarios and state the report date.
Constraints that can interrupt growth
Luxury demand is exposed to macroeconomic and operational shocks. Inflation can reduce real purchasing power; higher interest rates can discourage discretionary spending; currency swings change local prices and tourist behavior; and geopolitical events can disrupt travel and confidence. Inventory mistakes create a separate risk: too much product leads to markdowns, while too little product frustrates customers and limits conversion.
Brands also face a strategic tension between exclusivity and reach. Opening more channels can add customers but dilute scarcity or service quality. Raising prices can support margins but alienate aspirational buyers. Entering resale can increase visibility while making full-price purchases harder to justify. These are trade-offs, not automatic growth levers.
How to read the 2026 outlook responsibly
The Bain–Altagamma figures are forecasts and should be updated as conditions change. Compare the 0%–2% base-case range for total luxury spending with the 2%–4% personal-goods range, but do not treat either as a guaranteed result. Check whether a later result is reported at current or constant exchange rates, and whether it includes experiences.
The most informative dashboard combines sales value with units, active customers, average transaction value, full-price sell-through, repeat rate, regional mix, and channel mix. That dashboard can reveal whether growth is broadening, being carried by price, or shifting from goods to experiences.
Bottom line
Luxury-goods growth is driven by the interaction of spending power, consumer confidence, experiences, regional demand, product desirability, pricing discipline, category mix, resale, and digital discovery. The current market is uneven: experiences are supporting the wider luxury economy, the Americas are stronger than several other regions, China is recovering cautiously, and personal goods are expected to grow modestly in the 2026 Bain–Altagamma base case. The durable winners will be those that create enough perceived value to justify premium prices while adapting to more selective consumers and a broader definition of luxury.
