Water resistance on a Casio Vintage watch is a pressure classification tested under controlled conditions, not a promise that the watch can safely descend to the number of metres printed on it. The marking on your own dial or caseback—such as WATER RESIST, 5BAR, 10BAR or 20BAR—sets the starting point. Casio’s model-specific manual, the condition of the seals and the activity you plan to do determine whether rain, showering, swimming or diving is appropriate.
Start with the marking on your watch
Casio says its general watch classifications follow DIN 8310 and ISO 22810. Those classifications describe the pressure a watch withstands in a test. They do not make every Casio Vintage model interchangeable, so read the exact text on your watch and then check the matching operation guide.
| Marking | Casio’s general activity guidance | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| No water-resistance indication | Keep the watch away from water. | There is no stated protection for rain, splashes or immersion. |
| WATER RESIST | Rain and accidental splashes. | It is not general permission for bathing, swimming or submersion. |
| WATER RESIST 5 bar or 5BAR | The general table includes bathing, washing and showering. Casio’s care FAQ also describes swimming and water-related work at 5 atmospheres. | The table is general guidance; your model manual controls if it gives a narrower instruction. |
| WATER RESIST 10 bar or 10BAR | The general table adds swimming and snorkelling. Casio’s FAQ also lists windsurfing at this level. | It is not certification for scuba diving with an air tank. |
| WATER RESIST 20 bar or 20BAR | The general table includes free-diving without equipment. Casio’s FAQ lists skin diving among the examples for 10- and 20-atmosphere watches. | It still is not a scuba-diving rating, and the specific manual may restrict use. |
Casio uses both “bar” and “atmospheres” in its explanatory material. They are pressure labels, not instructions to use a watch at the corresponding depth. If the caseback says only WATER RESIST, treat it as the splash-and-rain category unless the model documentation says otherwise.
Why a metre number is not a safe diving depth
A dial or caseback may show a metre equivalent, but Casio describes that figure as a pictorial representation of test pressure. A watch marked for a certain number of metres is not automatically safe at that depth in real water.

The test pressure is static. Your arm and the water are moving when you swim, dive or strike the surface. A forceful stroke, jumping into water or an impact can create dynamic pressure substantially higher than the static pressure used for the classification. That is why “100 metres” should never be read as “safe to wear to 100 metres.”
The marking also says nothing about how long a particular older watch has retained its protection. Gaskets harden, flatten or crack; heat, cold, solvents and cosmetics can accelerate that deterioration. Two watches with the same printed rating can therefore have different real-world risk if one has fresh seals and the other has never been serviced.
Match the activity to the actual rating
Rain, hand-washing and splashes
Rain and incidental splashes are the practical limit for a watch marked WATER RESIST without a bar number. Keep the exposure brief, wipe the watch dry and do not press buttons while it is wet. A watch with no water-resistance indication should be kept away from even routine splashes.
Bathing, showering and washing
Casio’s general Europe table places bathing, washing and showering in the 5-bar category. Water temperature and products still matter: Casio advises against wearing the watch in a bath, heated pool or sauna and warns that soaps and detergents can damage water resistance. A model guide that says “splash resistant only” overrides the general table.

Swimming and snorkelling
The general table adds swimming and snorkelling at 10 bar. Casio’s handling FAQ gives swimming and water-related work as examples at 5 atmospheres and lists windsurfing at 10 atmospheres. These examples are not a universal promise for every Vintage reference; use the narrower instruction when the caseback, manual or service record is more specific.
Free-diving and skin diving
Casio’s general table lists free-diving without equipment for 20 bar. Its FAQ uses “skin diving” for the 10- and 20-atmosphere examples. Those terms describe breath-hold activities, not dives using an air tank. Avoid assuming that a higher number makes a normal digital or analogue Casio Vintage watch suitable for professional or compressed-air diving.
Scuba diving
Casio explicitly says not to use ordinary WATER RESIST or WATER RESISTANT watches for scuba diving or other diving that requires air tanks. A pressure label by itself is not scuba certification. Use equipment specifically designed and identified for that purpose instead.
Keep water out during normal use
- Do not operate buttons, adjusters or a crown while the watch is submerged or wet. Pressing a control can move a seal and provide a path for water.
- Do not use the watch in a bath, heated pool or sauna. Heat changes the dimensions of components and speeds seal aging.
- Keep soaps, shampoos, detergents, solvents and cosmetics away from the case and seals.
- After seawater exposure, rinse the watch with plain fresh water to remove salt and dirt, then dry it with a soft cloth.
- Casio cautions against water exposure for leather bands. A water-resistant case does not make a leather strap waterproof.
- Do not interpret a recently dried exterior as proof that the case is dry internally. Water can remain around buttons, the crystal or the caseback.
Water resistance declines with age
Casio states that water resistance is not permanent because sealing materials wear naturally. Its general recommendation is gasket replacement about every two or three years. That is a maintenance interval, not a guarantee that a seal will fail exactly then or remain sound until then. A watch exposed to heat, cold, chemicals, frequent swimming or heavy impacts may need attention sooner.

Age is especially important with vintage-labelled watches and older examples that have changed owners. A caseback marking records the design classification; it does not prove that the original gasket is still present, correctly lubricated or undamaged. Previous battery work, a scratched or bent caseback and a poorly seated crystal can also affect sealing.
Battery replacement should include a water-resistance check
Casio recommends having battery work performed by a trained technician. Its guidance says the technician should inspect water resistance during battery replacement and recommends an original retailer or an authorised Casio service centre because special tools are required.
Ask what service was performed rather than assuming that a new battery equals a resealed watch. A proper visit may involve opening the case, replacing the gasket, checking the seating surfaces and testing the case after reassembly. Keep the service record; it helps establish when the seals were last inspected.
What to do if you see fogging or moisture
Condensation inside the glass is a warning, not a cosmetic issue. Casio says to stop using the watch and take it to an original retailer or an authorised service centre if moisture appears inside the glass or fogging does not clear. Do not keep pressing buttons to test it, place it in household rice or heat it with a hair dryer. Those actions can spread contamination or damage components while leaving the leak unresolved.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Until it is examined, keep the watch away from additional water and avoid opening the case yourself. A technician can determine whether moisture entered through a control, crystal, caseback or gasket and whether corrosion has begun.
How to verify your particular Casio Vintage watch
- Read the dial and caseback. Look for “WATER RESIST,” a bar value such as “5BAR,” or another water-resistance statement. If there is no indication, treat the watch as non-water-resistant.
- Identify the complete model reference. Caseback codes, dial layout and module numbers can distinguish models that look similar but have different instructions.
- Open the model’s operation guide. Use the activity limits and warnings for that exact reference, not only a generic chart.
- Check service history. Find out when the battery, gasket and water-resistance test were last performed. If the history is unknown and you plan to swim, arrange an inspection first.
- Inspect the physical condition. Look for a loose or damaged caseback, cracked crystal, missing button, deteriorated strap or signs of corrosion. Any of these justify professional assessment before water exposure.
- Choose the conservative interpretation. When the marking and manual differ, follow the more restrictive instruction. When the rating is unreadable or the watch is old and untested, limit it to dry use until it has been checked.
A Casio Vintage example: the A168WG-9VT
Casio’s US water-resistant watches page names the A168WG-9VT as an example of a water-resistant Casio Vintage model. That confirms that at least this reference is presented as water resistant; it does not establish the rating of every A168 watch or every Vintage model. Use the example only as a reminder to locate the marking and manual for the watch in your hand.
Even within a familiar model family, regional references, production years and replacement parts can differ. The reference printed on the caseback is more reliable than a photograph or a seller’s generic description.

| Comparison point | Why it matters | What to record |
|---|---|---|
| Exact marking | The bar category establishes the starting activity guidance. | Every word and number on each dial or caseback. |
| Model-specific manual | General Casio tables do not establish every Vintage reference’s limits. | Permitted activities, button warnings and any regional qualification. |
| Seal and service condition | Water resistance declines as gaskets age or are disturbed. | Last gasket replacement, battery service and test date. |
| Planned activity | Swimming, showering, seawater and diving create different exposure and pressure. | Fresh or salt water, movement, temperature and whether equipment is used. |
| Visible damage | A cracked crystal, loose caseback or damaged button can defeat an otherwise adequate rating. | Any impact marks, corrosion, gaps or missing parts. |
A watch with a lower printed rating but recent documented sealing work may present less uncertainty for its permitted activity than an older watch with a higher number and unknown service history. Neither observation changes the model’s official rating; it changes how much confidence you should place in its current condition.
Common mistakes and the safer correction
“The number is a depth limit.”
Correction: Read the metre or bar value as a static pressure-test classification. Movement and impact can raise pressure, so do not plan an activity by converting the number directly into metres of depth.
“All Casio Vintage watches have the same protection.”
Correction: Check each watch’s marking and manual. Casio’s own example of the A168WG-9VT does not define the rating for every Vintage reference.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →“Water resistant means safe for scuba.”
Correction: Casio excludes ordinary water-resistant watches from scuba and other air-tank diving. Use equipment designed and rated for scuba instead.
“A new battery restores water resistance.”
Correction: Battery replacement and sealing are separate tasks. Have a trained technician inspect the gasket and test water resistance during the service.
“If fogging disappears, the problem is gone.”
Correction: Persistent or internal fogging requires immediate professional attention. Stop using the watch and keep it dry until it has been inspected.
The practical rule
Use the exact marking as a limit, not a challenge: no indication means avoid water; plain WATER RESIST means rain and splashes; bar-rated models may support progressively wetter activities only within Casio’s guidance for that model. Treat the seal’s age and service history as part of the rating’s real-world reliability, and never treat a metre figure as a guaranteed diving depth.
