VeloCloud SD-WAN is Broadcom’s enterprise networking system for connecting branch offices, data centers and cloud applications over multiple WAN links. It combines site-based Edge devices, network Gateways and centralized Orchestrator management. Its Dynamic Multipath Optimization (DMPO) monitors link conditions, steers application traffic and can mitigate some network impairments.
Broadcom currently uses the name “Broadcom SD-WAN by VeloCloud”; readers may also encounter “VeloCloud SD-WAN” and the older “VMware VeloCloud SD-WAN” name in product materials and documentation. This is an enterprise solution, not a consumer router product.

What are the main components of VeloCloud SD-WAN?
The system’s three main parts divide work between the site, the network and the management layer. Broadcom’s materials describe the following roles:
| Component | Role | Where it runs |
|---|---|---|
| Edge | Connects a site to the SD-WAN overlay and uses available WAN transports to reach other sites or applications. | At a branch, data center, campus or headquarters, as an appliance or a virtual network function on a customer-premises platform. |
| Gateway | Provides network services and optimized paths between Edges and applications, branches, data centers or cloud services. | Hosted by Broadcom or a service provider, or deployed on premises. |
| Orchestrator | Provides centralized configuration, provisioning, monitoring, policy and operational visibility. | Cloud-hosted or on premises. |
A useful analogy is that the Edge is the site endpoint, the Gateway is an optimized network on-ramp and service point, and Orchestrator is the central control and visibility layer. The analogy describes their broad roles, not the product’s literal implementation.

How does Dynamic Multipath Optimization work?
DMPO is Broadcom’s name for functions that monitor WAN paths, choose where application traffic should travel and respond to some kinds of path degradation. Broadcom describes three connected operations:
- Monitor: Profile WAN circuits and continuously assess path quality and available capacity.
- Steer: Recognize application traffic and direct it over suitable available links based on business priority, application requirements, current path performance and capacity. The product brief describes per-packet steering and the use of aggregated bandwidth for certain high-bandwidth flows.
- Remediate: If steering cannot avoid degradation, apply techniques such as error correction, jitter buffering and local retransmits. The brief says remediation is applied on demand to priority, network-sensitive applications.
These are vendor-documented capabilities, not independent performance guarantees. Actual latency, throughput and availability depend on the links, configuration, applications and deployment; the materials do not establish a result that every customer will achieve. Broadcom’s solution brief describes DMPO in more detail.

What does VeloCloud SD-WAN do for an organization?
Use multiple WAN transports
An organization can combine private links with broadband connections. Broadcom also names cable, DSL, LTE/5G and satellite as transport examples. Which transports are supported in practice depends on the deployment and product release; SD-WAN does not itself provide an internet connection.
Apply application-aware traffic policies
Traffic can be recognized and directed over suitable links according to policy and changing network conditions. Administrators can set enterprise-wide policies centrally and use specific site overrides where needed.
Manage and troubleshoot sites centrally
Orchestrator provides centralized provisioning and policy management along with monitoring, alerts, reporting, remote diagnostics and packet-capture capabilities described in Broadcom’s product brief. The brief also lists routing and QoS controls, including per-flow visibility. Confirm release and license details before assuming a particular capability is included in a customer’s configuration.
Apply security controls and connect services
Broadcom’s product brief lists encryption, segmentation and firewall features, as well as the ability to insert third-party security services. Those features do not remove the need to check the design, licensing, policies and division of security responsibilities for a specific deployment.
For examples of transports and product positioning, see Broadcom’s 2024 product release. These descriptions are the vendor’s, not independent tests.

VeloCloud SD-WAN is intended for enterprise networks with distributed sites and applications, rather than as a retail router purchase. A useful evaluation starts with the organization’s topology and operational requirements:
- Which sites, data centers and cloud applications need to connect?
- Which WAN transports are available at each site, and what capacity and path quality do they provide?
- How should application priorities, routing, QoS and site-specific exceptions be set?
- Will management be cloud-hosted or on premises, and where will Gateways be hosted or deployed?
- Which security controls and third-party services are required, and who is responsible for each?
- Which features are available for the selected release, license and service-provider arrangement?
SD-WAN is not synonymous with a particular internet service, and it should not be assumed to replace every router, firewall or MPLS deployment. The appropriate design depends on existing infrastructure and business requirements. Current public product information uses “Broadcom SD-WAN by VeloCloud,” while VMware-era references remain useful when identifying older documentation; Broadcom’s developer center uses the current naming.
