On supported DSC systems, the triangle or system-trouble indicator means the alarm has detected an active trouble condition. It does not identify the fault by itself. For the PowerSeries PC1616, PC1832 and PC1864, press [*][2] to view the trouble details; use the manual for your exact keypad and panel because DSC systems can display and navigate trouble information differently.
What the triangle tells you—and what it does not
DSC’s PowerSeries PC1616/PC1832/PC1864 User Manual calls this the “System Trouble” indicator: it signals that a trouble condition is active, not that one particular component has failed. The keypad’s trouble menu provides the information needed to narrow it down.
On those PowerSeries systems, an active trouble turns on the Trouble or System indicator and causes the keypad to beep every 10 seconds. Pressing [#] silences the beeps, but it does not clear or repair the underlying condition. DSC’s PC1832 product documentation and its manuals describe model-specific system behavior; check the documentation matching your installed equipment.

- Identify your system family. Read the keypad or panel model label if it is accessible without opening the controller enclosure. DSC PowerSeries, Neo and Pro systems have distinct documentation and interface behavior.
- Open the trouble menu. For the cited PowerSeries systems, press [*][2]. DSC’s Neo user guide also directs users to [*][2] for trouble details. Read the number or message shown and consult the manual for your exact model.
- Use the displayed detail to choose the next step. The indicator alone cannot tell you whether the issue is power, communication, a sensor, or another condition. Do not select a replacement part based only on the triangle.
- Contact your installer or a qualified service provider when the manual directs you to. The PC1616/PC1832/PC1864 manual cautions users not to service the alarm controller themselves. Do not open the metal cabinet, disconnect wiring, or replace an unspecified battery.
What the trouble details may identify
The PC1616/PC1832/PC1864 manual lists trouble categories that include:
#1 Best Overall
- Service required
- AC power loss
- Telephone-line fault or failure to communicate
- Sensor or zone fault, or tamper
- Low battery in a sensor or module
- Loss of time or date
Some trouble types require professional service. A low-battery message, for example, is not enough to choose a battery: first identify the device and follow its model-specific instructions. The controller’s indicator does not establish that a keypad battery is the cause.
Why the exact DSC model matters
DSC keypad families do not all use the same indicator behavior or troubleshooting instructions. The Neo guide says its Trouble indicator can signal a malfunction or tamper and that a flashing indication can mean low keypad battery in that system. That detail should not be generalized to other DSC generations. Likewise, do not infer a specific cause from the icon’s appearance or color without confirming the model.
Rank #2
Use the manual for your keypad and control panel, not a generic guide for a different DSC family. The PC1616/PC1832/PC1864 manual, Neo user guide and Pro HS3032/HS3128/HS3248 documentation cover separate systems and versions. The [*][2] sequence is documented for the cited PowerSeries and Neo systems, but check your equipment’s manual before relying on it.
When to stop troubleshooting
If the trouble display calls for service, or the cause is not clear from the correct manual, contact the alarm installer or a qualified security professional. The manuals caution against opening or servicing the controller yourself. Silencing a beep acknowledges the sound only; it does not mean the system is back to normal.
