“The next big thing” is a context-dependent label for a trend, technology, product category, or cultural shift attracting broad attention and seeming capable of wider impact. It is not a formal designation or proof that an idea will succeed—and several things can earn the label at once.

What the phrase means

Optics & Photonics News defines the “Next Big Thing” as “the newest and biggest trend that everyone talks about and wants a piece of.” The same article adds: “There can be more than one at the same time, but not every trend is the Next Big Thing.” The phrase is therefore best understood as a judgment about a trend’s attention and potential in a particular field, not as the name of one inevitable, universal winner.

Its meaning shifts with the audience and sector. A technology discussed as a possible breakthrough in media may be unrelated to what an education report calls the next big thing. Those uses are not necessarily rival forecasts; they reflect different questions and contexts.

Why a breakthrough is not automatically a big trend

A scientific or technical advance can be promising without becoming widely used. Tom Hausken’s January 2026 Optics & Photonics News article cautions that a breakthrough alone does not establish a large, expanding market: commercialization, funding, and time to market remain uncertain. Following public and private investment can offer useful evidence, but funding is not a guarantee of adoption.

Foresight has a similarly limited role. It helps decision-makers notice signals and consider possible futures; it does not certify that a signal will become important. The European Commission’s EU Policy Lab put it plainly in June 2024: “Foresight isn’t about prediction and while the EU Policy Lab is not claiming that these technologies are the next big thing, it is important to bring them to policymakers’ attention.”

How to assess a claim that something is the next big thing

There is no validated universal score for deciding which trend deserves the label. Instead, ask what evidence supports the claim, what remains uncertain, and whose sector or time horizon is in view.

Look for behavior, not just publicity

Has anyone changed what they do, or is the idea mainly receiving press attention? Ipsos describes fringe behaviors, departures from norms, gaps, workarounds, and unusual habits as possible early signals. A niche can suggest an opportunity to investigate, but niche activity does not establish mass adoption; some ideas remain niche or fail.

Check investment and the path to market

Ask whether scientific work and public or private funding are sustained, and whether there is a credible route from development to products or services people can use. The World Economic Forum describes combining literature, investment trends, and conversations with researchers and entrepreneurs to form educated estimates. That is a way to inform judgment, not a promise that a candidate will succeed.

Consider scale, barriers, and timing

A development may be technically possible yet difficult to deliver at useful scale. Financial constraints, regulation, commercialization challenges, and a long or uncertain time to market can limit its reach. The WEF frames its estimates around a three-to-five-year horizon; a claim about that period should not be mistaken for a prediction about what will dominate indefinitely.

Include risks in the assessment

A trend’s importance is not measured only by its potential benefits. For example, the OECD’s 2025 education-trends report discusses connected objects such as smart TVs, voice assistants, and manufacturing robots, including privacy concerns, particularly for children. Any assessment of connected technology should weigh those risks alongside possible uses.

Examples show why the label depends on context

Source and context What it calls or considers significant How to interpret it
Optics & Photonics News, January 2026 Military technology, based on following funding A sector-specific, funding-based view—not a global consensus.
Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, 2025 Intelligent agents and conversational interfaces In a survey of publishers’ expectations, 51% expected consumer adoption to be a slow burn and 20% considered it “the next big thing.” These are publisher expectations, not measured consumer adoption.
OECD, 2025 education-report context Connected objects, including smart TVs, voice assistants, and manufacturing robots The phrase appears as a section heading in an education-trends report; it does not establish IoT as the next big thing in every sector.
European Commission EU Policy Lab, June 2024 Signals including engineered-bacteria sustainable aviation fuel, lunar agriculture and infrastructure, and paper food-packaging sensors Examples to bring to policymakers’ attention through foresight, not declarations of future winners.
Ipsos, October 2025 Fringe behavior as a possible source of innovation; examples include plant-based milk and doula services Useful as an approach to finding ideas worth examining. Ipsos’s market-size statements are its claims, and a niche signal alone does not prove mainstream adoption.

How to use the phrase precisely

When you encounter the label, identify the speaker, sector, date, and kind of evidence behind it. A publisher survey measures what publishers expect; a foresight report surfaces possibilities; an investment-based argument tracks funding. None of those, by itself, demonstrates broad adoption. The most useful question is not simply “What is the next big thing?” but “For whom, in which field, over what time horizon, and based on what evidence?”
