Honey Sprite is an equipped Sprite Power in Fortnite. Epic’s v42.40 Fortnite Override notes say it gives you a chance to spawn bees at the hit location when you deal damage with a ranged weapon. The effect is random rather than guaranteed, and Epic has not published the proc rate, bee count, damage, duration, radius, cooldown, or stacking rules in those notes.
That makes Honey Sprite a situational combat helper, not a weapon, ammunition type, or consumable with a fixed effect. Understanding the Sprite system and the published limits is essential if you are trying to decide when it is worth carrying.
What Honey Sprite does
Its trigger is ranged-weapon damage
Honey Sprite checks for damage dealt with a ranged weapon. When the game registers qualifying damage, the Sprite has an opportunity to activate. Epic’s wording does not describe activation from simply aiming, firing without a hit, dealing melee damage, or using an item that is not classified as a ranged weapon.

Use the weapon’s in-game classification rather than assuming that every projectile or thrown item qualifies. The published description only establishes the broad requirement: damage must be dealt with a ranged weapon.

It places bees at the hit location
When the effect activates, bees spawn at the location where the ranged attack hit. That location-based behavior is important. Honey Sprite is not described as placing bees beside the shooter, at the player’s feet, or automatically on a target selected elsewhere. The location is tied to the successful hit.
The activation is chance-based
Epic uses the word “chance,” so a successful ranged hit is not a guaranteed bee spawn. Several hits may produce no bees, while another qualifying hit may activate the power. Treat the effect as an extra opportunity during ranged combat rather than as a reliable every-shot mechanic.
“Honey Sprite (Design A Sprite Winner!): Chance to spawn bees at the hit location upon dealing damage with a ranged weapon.”

That sentence is the complete published effect description in the v42.40 update notes. It confirms the trigger, the location and the random nature of activation, but it does not provide numerical tuning.
How Honey Sprite fits into Fortnite’s Sprite system
Sprites are helpers that grant powers
Epic describes Sprites as little helpers found and equipped during a match. A Sprite is therefore a gameplay power you carry and activate through its defined conditions, not a conventional weapon slot item that you fire manually.
Finding and equipping one
You first need to find a Sprite during the match, then equip it so its Sprite Power is active. Honey Sprite does not operate as a passive account perk that is permanently enabled across every game. Its availability depends on obtaining and equipping the Sprite in the current match.
Leveling the Sprite
Sprites can be leveled through exploration, eliminations and extraction. Leveling is part of the wider Sprite progression system; it is not evidence that Honey Sprite will activate on every hit. The v42.40 description does not explain a Honey Sprite-specific progression curve or say which numerical attribute changes at each level.

Extraction banks a Sprite for later use
A successful extraction banks a Sprite for later use. Sprite Dust can summon previously extracted Sprites and can upgrade their powers and loot. This gives you a way to build access over multiple matches instead of relying solely on finding the same Sprite again during a single game.

What happens if you are eliminated first
If you are eliminated before banking a Sprite, the Sprite remains on the battlefield for another player to pick up. In practical terms, carrying an unbanked Honey Sprite creates a risk: losing the match before extraction can leave that resource available to someone else rather than preserving it for your future inventory.
How to use Honey Sprite in a match
- Find a Sprite. Search the battlefield for a Sprite and confirm that it is Honey Sprite if you specifically want the bee-spawn power.
- Equip it. The Sprite must be equipped for its power to be part of your current loadout. Merely seeing or carrying an unselected Sprite does not establish that Honey Sprite is active.
- Choose a ranged weapon. Use a weapon that the game treats as ranged. The official description does not list every qualifying weapon category, so verify the item’s classification in the current season rather than relying on an old weapon list.
- Deal damage, not just fire. The trigger is tied to dealing damage. A missed shot or a shot that produces no damage should not be treated as a confirmed activation attempt.
- Watch the hit location. If the chance succeeds, bees should appear where the damaging hit landed. Keep track of that location instead of looking only around your own character.
- Extract if you want to bank it. Surviving the extraction process preserves the Sprite for later use. Being eliminated before banking leaves it available on the battlefield.
What the bee effect means tactically
Use it as extra pressure, not core damage
Because activation is random and the numerical tuning is unpublished, Honey Sprite should supplement your ranged strategy rather than replace accurate shooting, positioning or cover. Plan your engagement as though the bees may not appear.
Hit location can influence where pressure appears
The location rule creates a positional element: any effect that occurs is associated with the place your ranged attack hit. That may matter when a fight moves around cover or when opponents are separated from your firing position. However, Epic’s published description does not state how far bees travel, what they target, or how long they remain active, so do not assume a particular area-denial pattern.

Honey Sprite’s published limits and unknown values
The following table separates what Epic confirms from what the v42.40 notes leave unspecified. “Not stated” is intentional; filling these cells with community estimates would turn an unknown into a false specification.
| Property | What is established |
|---|---|
| Power type | Sprite Power, activated while Honey Sprite is equipped. |
| Trigger | Dealing damage with a ranged weapon. |
| Effect location | At the hit location. |
| Activation reliability | A chance; not guaranteed on every qualifying hit. |
| Proc percentage | Not stated in Epic’s v42.40 notes. |
| Bee count per activation | Not stated in Epic’s v42.40 notes. |
| Bee damage | Not stated in Epic’s v42.40 notes. |
| Bee duration | Not stated in Epic’s v42.40 notes. |
| Spawn radius or area | Not stated in Epic’s v42.40 notes. |
| Effective range from the shooter | Not stated in Epic’s v42.40 notes; only the hit-location rule is confirmed. |
| Cooldown | Not stated in Epic’s v42.40 notes. |
| Interaction with structures | Not stated in Epic’s v42.40 notes. |
| Stacking behavior | Not stated in Epic’s v42.40 notes. |
These omissions answer several common questions directly: there is no official published number for how much damage the bees do, how many appear, how long they last or how often the power can activate. If a video, post or guide supplies those values, treat them as player testing or version-specific observation unless Epic publishes matching figures.
Does Honey Sprite work in Ranked or competitive modes?
Epic Support states that Sprites are not available in competitive modes. As a result, Honey Sprite is unavailable where the Sprite system itself is disabled. Do not assume that equipping or banking one in a standard match makes it usable in a competitive playlist.

Why Honey Sprite may appear not to work
You missed or dealt no damage
Firing a ranged weapon is not enough to establish the trigger. Confirm that the attack actually dealt damage before concluding that the Sprite failed.
The random chance did not activate
A qualifying hit can produce no bees because the effect is chance-based. A short test with only a few shots cannot prove that Honey Sprite is broken or guarantee a specific activation rate.
The weapon may not meet the stated class
The official condition is ranged-weapon damage. If an item’s classification is unclear, test with a conventional ranged weapon recognized by the current game build instead of assuming that every damaging item qualifies.

The Sprite may not be equipped
Sprites grant their powers when found and equipped. Verify the active Sprite before testing the effect, particularly after changing inventory or picking up another Sprite.
You are in a competitive mode
Sprites are unavailable in competitive modes according to Epic Support. A missing effect in such a playlist is an availability rule, not evidence that the Honey Sprite trigger is malfunctioning.
You are looking in the wrong place
The bees are described as spawning at the hit location. Check where the damaging shot landed rather than expecting the effect to appear around your character.
How to compare Honey Sprite with another Sprite
Epic’s description of Honey Sprite supplies no numerical ranking against other Sprites, and the relevant values for those powers may differ by update. A useful comparison should therefore focus on function rather than unsupported “best Sprite” claims.
| Comparison axis | Question to ask | Honey Sprite’s established position |
|---|---|---|
| Trigger reliability | Does the power activate every time or only sometimes? | Chance-based; not guaranteed. |
| Required weapon class | What action activates it? | Damage from a ranged weapon. |
| Effect location | Where does the result appear? | At the hit location. |
| Tactical purpose | Does it add pressure, mobility, defense or utility? | It adds a bee-spawn event tied to a damaging ranged hit; the detailed bee behavior is not stated. |
| Mode availability | Can it be used in competitive playlists? | No, because Sprites are unavailable in competitive modes. |
| Numerical tuning | Can you compare damage, duration or cooldown? | Not from the published v42.40 description. |
This framework avoids treating an unknown proc rate or unlisted bee damage value as if it were a verified advantage. If Epic later publishes full statistics, those numbers can support a more precise comparison.
Version and evidence boundaries
The confirmed wording comes from Epic’s Fortnite Override update notes for version 42.40, with the general Sprite rules supplied by Epic’s Sprite overview and Support guidance. Fortnite mechanics can be retuned, renamed or restricted by playlist in later updates. The safest way to interpret Honey Sprite is therefore to preserve the exact confirmed behavior—chance-based bee spawning at a ranged-hit location—while treating every unlisted number as unknown until Epic documents it for the current version.
Quick Recap
Key takeaways
- Honey Sprite is an equipped Sprite Power, not a weapon or consumable.
- It can trigger when you deal damage with a ranged weapon.
- When it triggers, bees spawn at the hit location.
- The effect is a chance, so it will not happen on every qualifying hit.
- Epic’s reviewed v42.40 notes do not publish proc rate, bee count, damage, duration, radius, range, cooldown, structure interaction or stacking rules.
- Sprites are unavailable in competitive modes.
- Extracting successfully banks a Sprite; being eliminated first leaves an unbanked Sprite on the battlefield for another player.
