Density is an enchantment made specifically for the Mace. In Minecraft Java Edition 1.21 and Bedrock Edition 1.21, it increases the damage of a qualifying falling smash attack by 0.5 damage per block fallen for each Density level. It has five levels, so Density V adds 2.5 damage for every block of fall distance. The bonus is useful only when the Mace attack actually qualifies as a falling smash.
What Density changes
Density does not provide a general damage increase for every Mace swing. Its effect is tied to the Mace’s falling-smash attack: the attacker falls, lands the attack, and the enchantment scales the attack’s damage from the distance fallen. Mojang’s Java Edition 1.21 release notes describe the rule as: “Maces enchanted with Density do more damage per fallen block per Density level.” The same mechanic appears in the Bedrock Edition 1.21 release notes.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The official value is 0.5 damage per fallen block per Density level. In practical terms, count the blocks in the fall that leads to the smash, multiply that distance by 0.5, and then multiply by the Density level. That result is Density’s added damage component; it is not a replacement for the Mace’s other damage calculations.
An ordinary attack from the ground, or any attack that does not meet the game’s falling-smash conditions, does not activate this fall-distance bonus. Density therefore rewards deliberate vertical positioning rather than constant close-range swinging.

Density’s damage formula
Using the released 1.21 rule, the bonus can be written as:
Density bonus = fallen blocks × 0.5 × Density level
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe number 0.5 is the increase for one level for each fallen block. The enchantment’s maximum is level V, so the per-block multiplier at the cap is 0.5 × 5 = 2.5 damage per fallen block. These figures describe the Density bonus only. The released 1.21 notes do not specify a universal total smash-damage value, because total damage also depends on the Mace and the attack context.
Worked examples
The following examples apply the official rule directly. They are arithmetic illustrations, not separate in-game measurements.
| Density level | Bonus for a 1-block fall | Bonus for a 4-block fall | Bonus for a 10-block fall |
|---|---|---|---|
| I | 0.5 damage | 2 damage | 5 damage |
| II | 1 damage | 4 damage | 10 damage |
| III | 1.5 damage | 6 damage | 15 damage |
| IV | 2 damage | 8 damage | 20 damage |
| V | 2.5 damage | 10 damage | 25 damage |
For example, a Density III Mace used in a smash after a four-block fall receives a 4 × 0.5 × 3 = 6-damage Density bonus. A Density V Mace after the same fall receives 4 × 0.5 × 5 = 10 bonus damage. Increasing either the fall distance or the enchantment level increases the bonus linearly.

Maximum level: Density V
Density has five levels, from I through V, in both released Java Edition 1.21 and Bedrock Edition 1.21. Density V is the highest level; there is no Density VI in the released rules covered by the 1.21 notes.

- Density I: 0.5 damage per fallen block.
- Density II: 1 damage per fallen block.
- Density III: 1.5 damage per fallen block.
- Density IV: 2 damage per fallen block.
- Density V: 2.5 damage per fallen block.
Because the effect is per block, Density V becomes more valuable when you can repeatedly create longer, reliable smash falls. A short drop still receives the enchantment’s bonus, but the absolute increase is smaller than it would be after a longer fall.
When the bonus applies
The key condition is the attack type, not merely holding an enchanted Mace while standing at a height. Density matters when the attack qualifies as a falling smash attack. The fall must lead into the hit; simply being above an enemy does not turn every attack into a Density attack.
Use this checklist before relying on Density
- You are attacking with a Mace that has Density.
- Your attack is performed as the Mace’s falling smash rather than a normal grounded swing.
- You have a measurable fall before the hit lands.
- The distance is counted in fallen blocks and used with the enchantment level’s 0.5-per-block value.
If the attack is not a qualifying smash, plan as though the Density bonus is unavailable. This distinction is why Density can feel extremely strong in a prepared vertical attack yet provide no special benefit during routine flat-ground combat.

How to choose a fall setup
Density does not prescribe one particular tower, platform, or combat arena. The decision is about whether your environment lets you create smash attacks consistently and safely. A useful setup has a repeatable height difference, a clear line to the target, and enough control that you can land the hit instead of missing or taking an avoidable fall.
Short, repeatable drops
Short drops are easier to perform repeatedly and generally require less construction. Their Density bonus is correspondingly smaller because fewer blocks are fallen. This approach favors consistency over the largest possible single-hit bonus.
Longer drops
Longer falls produce a larger linear bonus. They also demand more planning: the target must remain where the smash can connect, and the landing must still qualify as the attack. The enchantment does not remove the practical risks of arranging a high fall, so a theoretical maximum is not automatically the best combat method.
Moving targets
A moving target can make a high-damage fall difficult to connect. When evaluating Density, consider not only the calculated bonus but also how often your setup produces a successful smash. A lower bonus that lands reliably may be more useful than a larger bonus that frequently misses.
Density compared with other Mace enchantments
In normal released Java and Bedrock 1.21 gameplay, Density is mutually exclusive with Breach, Smite, and Bane of Arthropods. You cannot combine Density with any of those alternatives on the same Mace through ordinary survival enchanting rules. The choice is therefore a specialization decision.

| Enchantment | Primary focus described in the 1.21 notes | Can it share a Mace with Density? | Maximum level stated here |
|---|---|---|---|
| Density | More smash damage per fallen block | No | V |
| Breach | Armor-focused alternative | No | Not stated in the cited release-note material |
| Smite | Mutually exclusive alternative to Density | No | Not stated in the cited release-note material |
| Bane of Arthropods | Mutually exclusive alternative to Density | No | Not stated in the cited release-note material |
| Wind Burst | Launch-and-chain option identified in the release notes | Compatibility with Density is not stated in the cited material | Not stated in the cited release-note material |
Choose Density when your combat plan centers on repeated falling smashes and you want the reward to scale with fall distance. Choose Breach when the armor-focused behavior is more relevant to your targets. Smite and Bane of Arthropods represent different mutually exclusive specialization paths; the material cited for this mechanic does not establish a broader damage comparison for them. Wind Burst is described as a launch-and-chain option, which is a different tactical goal from Density’s direct fall-distance scaling.
How to obtain Density
Mojang’s Java Edition 1.21 release notes classify Density as a common enchantment. They list it as available from the enchanting table and from enchanted books found in random loot chests.

Enchanting-table route
- Use an enchanting table with a Mace and the required experience and lapis-lazuli costs shown by the game.
- Review the offered enchantments and select an offer that grants Density when it appears.
- Check the resulting Mace before committing to it, because Density cannot normally coexist with Breach, Smite, or Bane of Arthropods.
The exact level offered by an individual enchanting-table roll is determined by the game’s normal enchantment selection; the release-note material establishes availability, not a guaranteed level or a fixed cost.
Enchanted-book route
- Acquire a Density enchanted book from a random loot chest in Java Edition 1.21.
- Use an anvil to apply the book to a Mace, provided the displayed combination is compatible.
- Verify the resulting enchantment level and the other enchantments on the Mace before spending additional resources.
The cited release notes specifically document the random-loot-book route for Java Edition. They do not provide a separate Bedrock acquisition table in the material summarized here, so Bedrock availability should be checked against the rules for the exact game version you are playing rather than assumed from the Java wording.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Density versus outdated snapshot information
Some older guides quote a larger value because they describe Java snapshot 24w13a, a pre-release build. That snapshot described Density as adding 1 damage per fallen block per level. The released 1.21 notes changed the value to 0.5 damage per fallen block per level.

For current Java 1.21 and Bedrock 1.21 play, use the released 0.5 value. Treat the 1-per-block figure as historical snapshot behavior, not as the live rule. This version distinction explains why two otherwise similar explanations can show different Density damage calculations.

Practical decision guide
Use the following sequence when deciding whether to spend resources on Density:
- Identify your attack pattern. If most of your Mace attacks occur on level ground, Density’s special effect will not be central to your damage plan.
- Measure your repeatable fall. Count the blocks in the fall that precedes a successful smash, then apply
blocks × 0.5 × level. - Account for reliability. A setup that produces fewer successful smashes can underperform its paper bonus.
- Check incompatibilities. Density excludes Breach, Smite, and Bane of Arthropods in released 1.21 gameplay.
- Compare the tactical goal. Density rewards fall distance, Breach is the armor-focused alternative identified by Mojang, and Wind Burst is presented as a launch-and-chain option.
- Confirm your version. Use the 1.21 released value, not the 24w13a snapshot value.
Common misunderstandings
“Does Density add damage to every hit?”
No. Its documented effect is specifically additional damage per fallen block for a falling smash attack.
“Does Density V add 2.5 damage total?”
It adds 2.5 damage per fallen block. A longer fall multiplies that per-block amount, so the bonus is not capped at a single 2.5-damage addition.
“Can I use Density with Breach, Smite, or Bane of Arthropods?”
Not in the normal released Java and Bedrock 1.21 rules. Those enchantments are mutually exclusive with Density.
“Is the old 1-damage value still correct?”
Only as a description of the 24w13a Java snapshot. Released 1.21 documentation uses 0.5 damage per fallen block per level.
Bottom line
Density turns the Mace into a specialized falling-smash weapon. Each level contributes 0.5 damage for every block you fall before a qualifying hit, and the five-level cap makes Density V worth 2.5 damage per fallen block. Its value depends on your ability to create reliable smash attacks, while its mutually exclusive relationship with Breach, Smite, and Bane of Arthropods forces you to choose a combat role. For current Java 1.21 and Bedrock 1.21 play, calculate with 0.5—not the 1-per-block value from the old 24w13a snapshot.
