The “6” in Wi-Fi 6 marks a generation of Wi-Fi technology: it is the industry name for products and networks based on the IEEE 802.11ax standard. It does not mean the connection uses the 6 GHz frequency band. That extension is identified by the separate label Wi-Fi 6E.
Why Wi-Fi has a generation number
Wi-Fi technology has technical names in the IEEE 802.11 family. The Wi-Fi Alliance introduced generation names to make it easier for people to recognize which generation a device supports and uses when connecting to a network. In its October 2018 announcement, the Alliance designated products and networks based on 802.11ax as Wi-Fi 6: Wi-Fi Alliance’s Wi-Fi 6 announcement.
In short, “6” is a generation number, not a frequency, speed rating, or guarantee that a particular connection will be faster.

No. Wi-Fi 6 identifies the 802.11ax generation; the label alone does not establish that a device supports the 6 GHz band. Wi-Fi 6E is the name for Wi-Fi 6 capabilities extended into 6 GHz.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
| Label | What it identifies | What it says about 6 GHz |
|---|---|---|
| Wi-Fi 6 | The generation associated with IEEE 802.11ax | The label alone does not establish 6 GHz support. |
| Wi-Fi 6E | Wi-Fi 6 capabilities extended into 6 GHz | Identifies the 6 GHz extension. |
The Wi-Fi Alliance introduced the Wi-Fi 6E name in January 2020 to distinguish devices that extend Wi-Fi 6 features and capabilities into 6 GHz: Wi-Fi Alliance’s Wi-Fi 6E announcement. Whether a particular device can use that band, and whether it is available for Wi-Fi in a given place, depends on the equipment and jurisdiction.
What the 6 GHz extension can add
In its 2020 announcement, the Wi-Fi Alliance described 6 GHz as additional spectrum for Wi-Fi 6 capabilities. It cited 14 additional 80 MHz channels and 7 additional 160 MHz channels. Those figures describe channel availability, not measured speed gains; they are not a promise that every location or device will have all those channels available.

- Next-Gen Wi-Fi 6 Technology – The Archer AX10 leverages advanced Wi-Fi 6 features like OFDMA and 1024-QAM to deliver improved efficiency across your entire network. Perfect for high-bandwidth activities like streaming, gaming, and smart home connectivity.
- Next-gen Dual Band router - 300 Mbps on 2. 4 GHz (802. 11n) plus 1201 Mbps on 5 GHz (802. 11ax)
- Connect more devices than ever before - Wi-Fi 6 technology simultaneously communicates more data to more devices using OFDMA and MU-MIMO while reducing lag dramatically
- Powerful Dual-Core 900MHz Processor – Handles multiple data streams simultaneously for reliable performance across your devices. Ensures smooth streaming, online gaming, and video conferencing without buffering or lag.
The Alliance described Wi-Fi 6E as extending Wi-Fi 6 features into 6 GHz, including the potential for higher performance, lower latency, and faster data rates. That is a description of the designation and its intended capabilities, not a guarantee of results for a particular home, internet plan, router, or device.

- If a device says Wi-Fi 6, read that as the 802.11ax generation. Do not infer 6 GHz support from the numeral alone.
- If it says Wi-Fi 6E, the label identifies Wi-Fi 6 capabilities extended into the 6 GHz band.
- For a specific setup, check the device’s specifications and the spectrum rules where it will be used. The generation label by itself does not establish local band availability or the performance you will get.
The IEEE’s 802.11 standard listing provides a standards-family reference; the Wi-Fi Alliance’s announcements explain how the Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 6E consumer-facing names map to that technology.
