Superintelligence usually means an artificial intellect that greatly exceeds human cognitive performance across virtually all relevant domains. Artificial general intelligence (AGI) usually means an AI that matches or exceeds humans across most or nearly all cognitive tasks. AGI therefore describes broad, human-level-or-better generality; superintelligence adds a much higher performance threshold. Neither term has one universally accepted test, so a careful explanation must state which definition, tasks, human comparison group and performance threshold it uses.
What “superintelligence” means in AI
Superintelligence is a comparative concept. It does not simply mean a system that is fast, has a large model, or performs impressively on one benchmark. The commonly cited formulation, associated with philosopher Nick Bostrom, describes an intellect that greatly exceeds the best human minds in virtually every domain of interest. Nature identifies Bostrom’s 2014 book Superintelligence: Paths, Dangers, Strategies as the work that popularized the term, while also noting that the field still lacks a rigorous shared definition.
NASA states plainly that there is no single simple definition of superintelligence. In practice, writers use the word for a hypothetical or future system whose cognitive abilities are not merely broad but decisively beyond human capability across the areas that matter for the comparison. Those areas could include scientific reasoning, engineering, language, planning, learning, creative problem-solving and social or organizational tasks, but the relevant set must be stated rather than assumed.

The word greatly is important. An AI that performs at approximately human level on a wide range of tasks could fit a broad AGI definition without meeting a superintelligence threshold. Conversely, an AI that is extraordinary in a narrow specialty may be superhuman in that specialty but would not normally be called a general superintelligence.

Why the definition is unsettled
Researchers disagree about which tasks count, how much performance is enough, how to compare machine and human abilities, and whether practical autonomy should be part of the label. A benchmark can show that a system is stronger than people on a particular test without showing that it is broadly superior in the real world. For that reason, “superintelligent” is a conclusion that requires an explicit test design, not a status conferred by marketing language or a single impressive result.
Nature’s 2026 discussion, “The science of superintelligence and why AI is still a useful word”, treats the term as still lacking a rigorous common meaning. That uncertainty does not make the concept useless; it means claims should identify the definition being applied.
What AGI means
AGI generally refers to an AI system with general cognitive competence: it can match or exceed humans on most or nearly all cognitive tasks, rather than being confined to one domain. The UK government’s International scientific report on the safety of advanced AI describes AGI as a possible future system equal to or better than humans on all or almost all cognitive tasks.

That description sets a breadth requirement and a human-relative performance requirement. It does not require the system to be better than humans by a large margin. An AGI could be roughly human-level across a very wide task range, with strengths and weaknesses that differ from those of people. Whether a system qualifies still depends on the chosen task set and comparison standard.

AGI is not the same as “general-purpose AI”
The UK report explicitly warns against confusing AGI with general-purpose AI. “General-purpose” commonly describes technology that can be adapted to many applications. It does not, by itself, establish human-level competence across nearly all cognitive tasks. A tool can be useful in many settings while remaining far below people in reliability, transfer to unfamiliar problems, physical-world understanding or long-horizon planning.
AGI versus superintelligence: the core difference
The cleanest distinction is the performance threshold. Both concepts are broad; superintelligence is intended to be much stronger within that broad range.
| Axis | AGI | Superintelligence |
|---|---|---|
| Breadth | General capability spanning most or nearly all cognitive tasks under the selected definition. | Usually broad capability extending across virtually all domains of interest. |
| Performance threshold | Human-level or better across the selected broad set of tasks. | Greatly beyond human cognitive performance across the relevant broad set. |
| Definition status | Several operational definitions and proposed level frameworks exist. | No single simple or rigorous shared definition exists. |
| What must be specified | Which tasks count as general and which human comparison standard is used. | Which domains are included, how much superiority is required and what evidence supports it. |
OpenAI made this threshold distinction explicit in its 2023 announcement “Introducing Superalignment”: “Here we focus on superintelligence rather than AGI to stress a much higher capability level.” That is an organizational statement explaining terminology, not a universal industry standard.
Separate breadth from depth
Google DeepMind’s framework, “Levels of AGI for Operationalizing Progress on the Path to AGI”, is useful because it treats capability depth and capability breadth as separate dimensions.

Breadth: how many kinds of work?
Breadth asks whether competence transfers across substantially different activities. A broad evaluation might include language understanding, mathematical reasoning, coding, scientific analysis, visual interpretation, planning and learning new tasks. The exact list is a methodological choice. Passing several tests in one narrow family does not establish broad generality.
Depth: how well is each task performed?
Depth asks how capable the system is within each domain. Human-level performance across many tasks points toward an AGI-style threshold. Performance that is consistently and substantially better than the strongest relevant humans points toward the superintelligence idea. A system can therefore be broad but shallow, narrow but exceptionally deep, broad and human-level, or broad and far beyond human performance.
Autonomy and risk are separate deployment questions
DeepMind’s framework also discusses autonomy and risk as considerations when assessing advanced systems. These dimensions should not be silently folded into the definition of intelligence. A system might have very high cognitive scores but require constant human direction, or it might operate with significant autonomy without being superior at every intellectual task. Capability, autonomy and risk should be reported separately so readers know what a claim actually measures.

- Write the definition first. State whether AGI means human-level performance on most cognitive tasks, and whether superintelligence means greatly exceeding humans across virtually all selected domains.
- List the tasks and domains. Identify the actual abilities tested. Include unfamiliar as well as practiced tasks, and explain what is excluded. “All tasks” is not a meaningful claim without boundaries.
- Name the comparison group. Specify whether results are compared with the average adult, trained professionals, top specialists, or another reference population. Human performance varies dramatically by task and expertise.
- Set a performance threshold. “Better” could mean higher accuracy, faster completion, lower cost, more reliable reasoning or better outcomes over a long sequence. A superintelligence claim needs a substantially higher threshold than a small advantage.
- Test transfer and robustness. Check performance on new examples, changed instructions, unfamiliar domains and adversarial conditions. Scores on memorized or heavily optimized tests cannot by themselves establish generality.
- Measure reliability over time. Record error rates, calibration, consistency and the consequences of failure. A system that occasionally produces excellent answers but frequently fails unpredictably may not meet a practical human-level standard.
- Report assistance and operating conditions. Say whether the system used tools, retrieval, human feedback, multiple attempts, special prompts or extensive computing. Those conditions affect what the result demonstrates.
- Keep autonomy distinct. State whether the system can select goals, plan, use tools and act without continuous supervision. Do not infer these properties from a cognitive benchmark.
- Publish enough evidence to reproduce the comparison. A label unsupported by task details, baselines and uncertainty estimates is an assertion, not an established classification.
Common misconceptions
“Superintelligence” does not mean merely very fast computing
Speed can improve productivity, but the term concerns cognitive performance across domains. Faster execution of a narrow algorithm is not evidence of broad intellectual superiority.
One superhuman skill is not general superintelligence
An AI may outperform people in a specialized game, calculation or pattern-recognition task while lacking competence in unrelated areas. Such a result demonstrates domain-specific superiority, not the broad comparison implied by superintelligence.
Broad capability does not automatically mean superhuman capability
A system may handle many kinds of requests yet remain unreliable, shallow or dependent on human correction. DeepMind’s breadth-and-depth distinction explains why generality and performance should be scored separately.
Fluent conversation is not a qualification test
Language fluency can make a system appear versatile, but conversation alone does not measure scientific reasoning, long-horizon planning, physical understanding, reliability or transfer to unfamiliar tasks. Those abilities require separate evaluation.

Neither term requires consciousness
These labels describe observed or proposed cognitive performance. They do not, by themselves, assert that a system is conscious, sentient, self-aware or human-like in its subjective experience.
Why precise wording matters
Calling a system AGI or superintelligent can obscure important differences in capability and risk. Policymakers may need to know whether a system can autonomously conduct research, organizations may care about dependable performance under production constraints, and users may only need a tool that is broadly useful. A single label cannot answer all of those questions.
A precise description is more informative: for example, “outperforms the selected professional baseline on these five task families under these conditions,” or “shows broad competence but remains below the stated human threshold in long-horizon planning.” Such wording lets readers compare systems without pretending that the field has a settled universal scale.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat is and is not established about current AI claims
NASA and Nature both emphasize that superintelligence lacks one agreed definition, while the UK report and OpenAI distinguish AGI’s broad human-level target from a substantially higher superintelligence threshold. The available frameworks therefore support careful classification criteria, not a definitive declaration that any named current system qualifies.
When a claim appears, ask which definition it uses, which tasks were tested, who supplied the human baseline, how far above that baseline the result is, and whether the evidence covers unfamiliar situations. Without those details, “AGI” and “superintelligence” function as broad descriptors rather than verified technical categories.
The practical takeaway
AGI and superintelligence overlap in breadth but differ in degree. AGI is usually the idea of human-level-or-better general cognitive ability; superintelligence is usually general ability that greatly exceeds human performance across virtually all relevant domains. Since neither term has a universally accepted threshold, the responsible way to use either label is to define the task scope, comparison group, performance margin, operating conditions and evidence.
