Soil level tells a washing machine how dirty you consider the clothes in a load. Choose the cycle for the fabric or item first, then use Light, Normal, or Heavy—if your washer offers those options—to adjust for how much dirt, staining, or odor is present. The exact effect varies by model and cycle.

What “soil level” means

Soil level is your estimate of how soiled the laundry is. It is not a measure of how full the drum is, and it is not the wash cycle itself. The cycle is the main choice for the fabric or item; soil level fine-tunes the wash on machines that offer the setting. Whirlpool’s explanation of soil level and its guide to washer water levels distinguish these controls.

Which soil level should you use?

For typical everyday laundry, start with the cycle’s preset or Normal soil level. Adjust according to visible dirt, stains, or odor, while following garment care labels and the washer’s cycle guide.

  • Light: For lightly worn clothes or loads with little visible soil. On some Whirlpool top-load models, a lower soil setting can also reduce tangling and wrinkling.
  • Normal or preset: For everyday clothes with ordinary soil. If the cycle does not let you change the setting, its preset may be the only available choice.
  • Heavy: For visibly dirtier laundry, such as clothes with food stains or noticeable odors. A higher setting commonly adds wash time, but check your model’s manual for its specific behavior.

These examples are general guidance, not a substitute for selecting a cycle appropriate to the fabric. A delicate item may need a gentler cycle even when it has a stain; pretreating a stained area may be more appropriate than choosing a more aggressive cycle. Whirlpool recommends pretreatment for areas needing extra care in its soil-level guide.

What does changing soil level do?

Many washers use soil level to change how long the wash runs. On the cited Whirlpool top-load models, changing the selection changes the estimated remaining time, and lower settings may help reduce tangling and wrinkling. Whirlpool Product Help says, “For heavily soiled items, select Extra Heavy Soil Level or the Extra Power button for more wash time.” That advice applies to the models covered by that support guidance, not necessarily every washer.

The setting’s other effects are model-specific. Samsung says that on the machines covered by its water-fill guidance, raising soil level uses more water. The older LG WM8000 manual describes soil-level adjustments that modify cycle time and/or wash actions. Whirlpool also notes that some machines with bulk dispensers adjust detergent quantity based on soil level. These manufacturer examples show why a higher setting should not be assumed to change the same things on every washer.

Soil level is not water level or cycle selection

Water level controls how much water the washer uses or fills with; soil level describes how dirty you judge the laundry to be. The available water-level choices may be automatic or user-selectable, depending on the machine. A cycle, meanwhile, determines the main wash program—such as wash action, temperature, spin speed, and overall cycle behavior. On select models, soil level fine-tunes that program. Whirlpool explains the distinction in its water-level guide.

How to choose without overcomplicating it

  1. Check the care label and choose the cycle that suits the fabric or item.
  2. Assess the load’s soil: use Light for lightly worn items, the preset or Normal for routine laundry, and Heavy for more visible dirt, stains, or odor.
  3. Check the washer’s manual if you need to know whether the setting changes time, water use, wash action, detergent dispensing, or which options are available for that cycle.
  4. Pretreat a concentrated stain when appropriate rather than assuming the highest soil level will resolve it. Follow the garment’s care instructions and the stain-treatment product directions.

Some cycles restrict soil-level choices or set the level automatically. If the control is unavailable, use the cycle and options the machine provides rather than trying to override its program. For detergent, follow the washer instructions and detergent label; Whirlpool Product Help advises using HE detergent in applicable machines and considering both soil level and load size when dosing.
