Pertex is a fabric brand and family name, not a single waterproof rating. The word on a jacket tells you very little until you read the complete fabric name. Pertex Shield is the family associated with waterproof-breathable shells. Pertex Quantum is a lightweight, tightly woven, downproof fabric for insulated garments, while Quantum Air is a softer, water-resistant option for windshells and insulation.
That distinction matters because a jacket labeled “Pertex” may be designed for sustained rain, light showers, wind protection, or simply to keep down insulation from leaking. The exact variant, membrane or weave, face fabric, seam treatment and garment design determine what it can do.
Pertex is a fabric family, not a performance rating
Pertex began as a technical-fabric brand and now covers several fabric families with different jobs. A hangtag that says only “Pertex” is similar to a label that says “synthetic insulation”: it identifies a product category, but not the exact construction or weather protection.

Shield points toward a waterproof-breathable shell. Quantum usually identifies a tightly woven, downproof shell fabric around insulation. Quantum Air is aimed at lightweight wind protection and insulated garments, with water resistance rather than a waterproof membrane. Shield Revolve describes a mono-material design intended to simplify recycling, not a separate waterproofness grade.

Pertex’s own descriptions are therefore more useful than the brand name by itself. The fabric family tells you the intended job; the finished jacket determines how well that job is delivered.
What the main Pertex families mean
| Pertex family | Fabric approach | Weather behavior described by Pertex | Typical garment role | What the label does not prove |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shield | Waterproof-breathable shell family using a membrane construction | Designed for waterproof protection while allowing water vapor to escape | Rain jackets, hiking shells and other weatherproof outer layers | It does not specify the exact variant, layer count, seam sealing or finished-jacket performance |
| Shield Air | Shield variant with an air-permeable membrane structure | Pertex says its open membrane structure lets air pass while retaining effective wind resistance | Higher-output shells where airflow and comfort are priorities | Air permeability is not the same measurement as total waterproofness or vapor-breathability |
| Quantum | Lightweight, tightly woven, downproof fabric | Windproof and water-resistant; DWR is intended to shed light rain and snow | Down jackets, synthetic-insulated jackets and sleeping bags | It is not automatically equivalent to a waterproof rain shell |
| Quantum Air | Light, soft woven fabric optimized for low weight and airflow | Water-resistant rather than a waterproof-breathable membrane shell | Standalone windshells or the outer fabric of insulated garments | It should not be selected as a substitute for a fully waterproof shell in prolonged rain |
| Shield Revolve | Mono-material construction made entirely from recycled polyester | Its distinguishing claim concerns material simplicity and recycling design | Waterproof-breathable garments where end-of-life design is a priority | A design intended to improve recyclability does not guarantee that a particular garment will be collected or recycled |
These are families, not rigid guarantees for every product sold under the name. A jacket maker can change the face fabric, backing, zippers, hood, seam treatment and pattern while using the same Pertex family. Always read the garment-specific specification.
Pertex Shield: the rain-shell direction
Shield is the Pertex family to investigate when you need a waterproof-breathable jacket. A membrane blocks liquid water while providing a route for some water vapor to leave the clothing system. The exact Shield variant and its construction still matter: two jackets can use Shield but differ in durability, weight, ventilation and seam coverage.
Shield Air is a named variant rather than a synonym for every Shield product. Pertex describes it this way: “the open structure of the Shield Air membrane allows air to pass through, whilst still offering effective wind resistance.” That statement applies to Shield Air specifically. It should not be generalized to Quantum, Quantum Air or every other Shield construction.
Pertex Quantum: downproof insulation fabric
Quantum is tightly woven and lightweight so insulation can loft without being held down by a heavy shell. “Downproof” means the weave is designed to keep down clusters from working through the fabric. Pertex describes Quantum as windproof and water-resistant, with a durable water-repellent (DWR) finish intended to shed light rain and snow.

That is useful protection for an insulated jacket, but it is a different task from stopping hours of rain. Once the face fabric wets out, the garment may still block wind and protect insulation, yet it should not be treated as a dedicated waterproof shell unless the jacket’s own specification says so.
Pertex Quantum Air: a wind-shell and insulation fabric
Quantum Air is lighter and softer, with a focus on comfort and airflow. Pertex positions it for standalone windshells and as the shell fabric on insulated garments. Its water resistance can handle brief exposure and light precipitation, but the family is not interchangeable with a waterproof Shield shell.

Pertex Shield Revolve: a construction and recycling choice
Shield Revolve is described by Pertex as a mono-material made entirely from recycled polyester and designed to be easier to recycle than conventional waterproof-breathable fabrics made from several material types. This is a design-for-recycling benefit. It does not establish that every finished jacket will enter a recycling stream, because collection, local facilities, trims and the garment maker’s take-back arrangements still determine the real outcome.
Is a Pertex jacket waterproof?
Sometimes, but the word “Pertex” alone cannot answer the question. A jacket made with a Shield waterproof-breathable variant is the relevant Pertex option for rain protection. A Quantum or Quantum Air jacket is generally water-resistant: its woven face and DWR can shed light rain or snow, but that construction is not the same as a waterproof membrane shell.

- The complete fabric name: Shield, Shield Air, Quantum, Quantum Air or another named variant.
- The garment specification: Look for the maker’s own description of waterproof or water-resistant use, not just a logo on the sleeve.
- The construction details: Examine seam sealing, hood adjustment, front-zipper protection and cuffs. A waterproof fabric cannot compensate for unsealed seams or an exposed zipper.
DWR is a finish on the outer face fabric. It helps droplets bead and run off, reducing the amount of water held by the surface. DWR is not the membrane itself and is not a standalone waterproof rating. Its condition changes with wear, dirt, abrasion and washing, so follow the jacket maker’s care instructions and reassess the garment when water stops beading.
How a shell fabric becomes a working jacket
The face fabric
The face fabric is the outer textile you touch. Cyclingnews’ waterproof-fabric explainer describes it as the layer bonded to a waterproof membrane, with DWR applied to that outer surface. Face-fabric weight and weave influence abrasion resistance, hand feel, noise and packability. A membrane name therefore cannot tell you how tough or comfortable the complete jacket will be.
The membrane or woven barrier
Shield uses a waterproof-breathable membrane construction. Quantum and Quantum Air rely on tightly woven or lightweight woven fabrics whose main benefits are downproofing, wind resistance, low weight and water resistance. These are different mechanisms, so comparing them as though they were interchangeable waterproof ratings leads to the wrong purchase.
Seams, closures and patterning
Water can enter through needle holes, seam joins, pockets, cuffs and zippers even when the fabric panel itself is waterproof. A rain shell needs appropriate seam treatment and a design that directs water away from openings. Hood shape, brim adjustment and the ability to close the collar can matter as much as the fabric in driving rain.

Air permeability versus vapor breathability
Air permeability means air can move through a structure. Vapor breathability refers to the movement of water vapor, such as perspiration, through the clothing system. They are related comfort considerations but not identical tests. Shield Air’s open membrane structure is specifically described as allowing air through while retaining wind resistance; that sentence should not be used to infer a universal property for all Pertex fabrics.
How Pertex compares with other shell fabrics
It is not technically sound to rank “Pertex” against “Gore-Tex,” “eVent” or another brand as if each were one material with one fixed performance level. Every brand has multiple membranes, face fabrics, layer constructions and intended uses. Compare the exact named variant and the finished jacket.
| Comparison question | What to examine in a Pertex jacket | Why it matters when comparing another shell |
|---|---|---|
| What weather is it for? | Shield shell, Quantum insulated jacket or Quantum Air windshell | A waterproof rain layer and a windproof insulation shell solve different problems |
| How is water blocked? | Membrane construction for Shield; woven fabric and DWR for Quantum families | “Water-resistant” and “waterproof-breathable” are not interchangeable descriptions |
| How does moisture move? | Look for the specific variant’s air or vapor claims and the garment’s ventilation features | Two shells can use different approaches to comfort during high-output activity |
| What is the construction? | Layer count, backing, face-fabric weight, seam sealing and zipper design | Construction changes durability, softness, noise, weight and actual rain protection |
| What are the trade-offs? | Packability, abrasion resistance, airflow, insulation compatibility and care needs | A lighter shell may sacrifice toughness; a more protective shell may feel warmer or bulkier |
| Are figures comparable? | Only use numbers tied to the exact fabric, garment, test method and date | A hydrostatic-head, breathability or weight number from one test cannot establish a universal brand ranking |
No common controlled test table establishes a general Pertex-versus-other-brand ranking for hydrostatic head, breathability, durability or weight. If a manufacturer publishes figures, check the test method and whether the number describes fabric in a laboratory or the complete garment in use. Do not transfer a result from one Shield, Quantum or competitor model to every product carrying that brand.
How to identify the right Pertex jacket before buying
- Read the sewn-in label or model page. Record the full fabric name, including words such as Shield Air, Quantum Air or Shield Revolve.
- Define the weather job. Decide whether you need sustained rain protection, a short-shower layer, a wind shell, or an insulated jacket that keeps down contained.
- Verify the manufacturer’s water wording. “Waterproof” indicates a different intended use from “water-resistant” or “DWR-treated.”
- Inspect construction information. Look for seam taping or sealing, hood and cuff adjustments, storm flaps, zipper protection and the number of fabric layers.
- Match comfort to activity. For high-output movement, consider airflow, pit zips or other ventilation; for static warmth, prioritize insulation, wind resistance and weather coverage.
- Check care and repair instructions. Keep the product’s washing, DWR-renewal and repair guidance with the garment rather than assuming all Pertex fabrics should be treated identically.
Which Pertex family fits common use cases?
Sustained rain, mountain weather or commuting in a downpour
Start with a Shield shell and then evaluate the complete garment. Prioritize seam treatment, hood coverage, closure design and the jacket’s stated waterproof use. Shield is the Pertex direction for this job; Quantum and Quantum Air are not substitutes simply because they carry the same brand name.

Cold-weather insulation with occasional light precipitation
Quantum is designed for this role. Its downproof weave protects insulation, while wind resistance and DWR help with light rain or snow. It is a practical outer fabric for an insulated jacket when a separate rain shell can be carried for serious weather.

Fast hiking, running or cycling in changeable wind
Quantum Air can make sense when low weight, softness and water resistance are more important than prolonged rain protection. A Shield Air shell may be the better choice if you need membrane-level rain protection but want to investigate a design that emphasizes air movement.
Minimalist layering
A Quantum Air windshell can serve as a light outer layer over active clothing, while a Shield shell can provide a dedicated weather barrier. Decide whether you would rather carry one waterproof layer or accept a water-resistant wind layer and add protection only when forecasts demand it.
End-of-life considerations
Shield Revolve is the Pertex option whose stated distinction is mono-material, recycled-polyester construction intended to make recycling easier. Treat that as a design objective, then check the jacket maker’s actual repair, take-back and recycling arrangements in your region.

- Assuming every Pertex jacket is waterproof: Identify Shield versus Quantum or Quantum Air.
- Equating DWR with a membrane: DWR helps the face shed droplets; it does not turn a woven insulation fabric into a guaranteed rain shell.
- Comparing logos instead of variants: Compare exact fabric names, layer constructions and garment specifications.
- Ignoring seams and openings: A waterproof panel cannot prevent leakage through an unsealed seam, pocket or zipper.
- Treating air permeability as a single breathability score: Air movement and vapor movement are different properties.
- Assuming recycling is automatic: A mono-material design can make recycling easier, but collection and processing still determine the outcome.
- Using laboratory figures as universal promises: Keep every number attached to its fabric version, test method, garment and conditions.
Bottom line for reading a Pertex label
Read “Pertex” as the beginning of the specification, not the conclusion. Choose Shield when you are looking for a waterproof-breathable shell, investigate Shield Air for its specific air-permeable membrane design, choose Quantum for lightweight downproof insulation fabric with wind and light-weather protection, and consider Quantum Air for a soft, water-resistant windshell or insulated garment. Then judge seams, hood, zippers, layers, care and the intended use of the actual jacket. That process is more reliable than treating any fabric brand as a universal performance guarantee.
