In quantum computing, parity is the modulo-two property of selected qubits: whether the selected computational-basis bits contain an even or odd number of 1s. A parity operator, usually a product of Pauli operators, has two possible eigenvalues, +1 and −1. The +1 sector is conventionally called even parity; the −1 sector is odd parity.
Parity matters because one collective measurement can reveal whether a group of qubits satisfies a constraint without revealing every individual qubit value. That makes parity checks fundamental to stabilizers, syndrome measurements and quantum-error-correction codes.
What parity means mathematically
Choose a set of qubits and define an operator that acts on them. For a Z-type check, the operator is a tensor product of Pauli Z operators on the selected qubits and identity operators elsewhere. A two-qubit example is Z⊗Z; a three-qubit example that checks only the first two qubits is Z⊗Z⊗I.

Every parity operator has two eigenspaces. If an operator P acts on a state and returns the same state, P|ψ⟩ = |ψ⟩, the state has eigenvalue +1 and is called even parity. If it reverses the sign, P|ψ⟩ = −|ψ⟩, the state has eigenvalue −1 and is called odd parity. Richard Feynman described the same distinction in terms of a parity operator returning a state unchanged or with its sign reversed.

How a Z check counts 1 bits
For computational-basis states, Pauli Z contributes +1 on a |0⟩ and −1 on a |1⟩. The product therefore contributes a sign of (−1)w, where w is the number of 1s among the checked positions.
| Checked bits | Number of 1s | Parity sector | Z-type eigenvalue |
|---|---|---|---|
| 00 | 0 | Even | +1 |
| 01 | 1 | Odd | −1 |
| 10 | 1 | Odd | −1 |
| 11 | 2 | Even | +1 |
Thus, a Z⊗Z check does not identify whether the string was 01 or 10. It reports only that the two bits have odd parity. Likewise, 000, 011, 101 and 110 all belong to the even-parity sector for three selected positions, while 001, 010, 100 and 111 belong to the odd sector.
What is an even-parity state?
An even-parity state is any state in the +1 eigenspace of the chosen parity operator. It does not have to be one basis string. For example, a coherent superposition of |00⟩ and |11⟩ is still entirely even under Z⊗Z, because both components receive eigenvalue +1. Relative amplitudes and phases inside that sector can remain coherent.
The same idea applies to an odd-parity superposition such as a combination of |01⟩ and |10⟩. Both components receive −1 from Z⊗Z, so the whole superposition is an eigenstate with odd parity.
States without definite parity
A state can contain amplitudes from both sectors. A superposition of an even component and an odd component is not an eigenstate of the parity operator. Measuring parity then projects the state onto either the even or odd subspace, with probabilities determined by the component weights. This is analogous to parity in spatial reflection symmetry: some states have definite symmetry, while others do not.

Why parity measurements are useful
A direct measurement of every data qubit reveals the individual bit values and can destroy the encoded superposition. A collective parity measurement answers a narrower question: does the selected group satisfy the even constraint or the odd constraint?
That smaller information gain is exactly what error-correction procedures need. An ancilla can interact with several data qubits, acquire their collective parity, and then be measured. The data qubits are not individually read out. In an ideal stabilizer measurement, coherence between basis states in the same parity sector is preserved while the measurement records the sector label.
Direct readout versus an ancilla-mediated check
| Method | Information obtained | Typical effect on encoded information |
|---|---|---|
| Measure each data qubit | Every selected bit value | Generally collapses the data state in the measurement basis |
| Measure one parity operator | One collective bit: even or odd | Can preserve coherence within a parity sector |
| Measure several commuting checks | A multi-bit syndrome identifying a pattern of constraint violations | Provides diagnostic information while avoiding full data readout |
The ancilla method is not a way to learn nothing about the data; it deliberately learns one stabilizer eigenvalue. Its value is that the information is targeted at error syndromes rather than at the logical amplitudes being protected.
Why does a stabilizer return +1 or −1?
In stabilizer language, a code space is the set of states fixed by a collection of commuting stabilizer generators. A state that satisfies a generator has eigenvalue +1 for that generator. If an error moves the state out of that constraint sector, the same generator can return −1. The sign is therefore a compact record of whether the stabilizer condition is satisfied.
Z-type stabilizers are parity checks
Stabilizer generators containing only Z operators and identity operators are equivalent to parity checks. IBM’s example Z⊗Z⊗I separates the computational-basis strings according to the parity of their leftmost two bits. Its +1 eigenvectors are linear combinations of strings with even parity in those positions; its −1 eigenvectors are linear combinations with odd parity.

The generator does not require the state to be a single basis string. Any linear combination entirely inside one eigenspace has the same stabilizer result. This is why stabilizers can constrain an encoded quantum state without specifying all of its classical bits.

One parity check supplies one binary fact. It can tell you that an odd number of checked flips occurred, but not which qubit was responsible. A code therefore uses multiple commuting checks whose results form a syndrome. The pattern of +1 and −1 results can distinguish error locations that a single check cannot.
In a repetition-code syndrome circuit, overlapping parity checks compare different subsets of the data. An error on one data qubit changes a characteristic subset of check outcomes. The decoder uses that pattern to infer a correction, while the logical state remains encoded rather than being measured bit by bit.
How does a parity check detect a bit flip?
A bit flip is represented by a Pauli X error in the computational basis. A Z-type parity operator and an X error on one of its checked qubits anticommute. Applying the error therefore changes the stabilizer eigenvalue from +1 to −1, or from −1 to +1. The syndrome records that the parity constraint has been violated.
Why one check can miss two flips
If two checked qubits both undergo bit flips, each flip changes the Z-check sign, so the two sign changes multiply to +1. The final parity is the same as it was before the errors. This is not physical cancellation of the errors: both qubits are still wrong relative to the intended state. It is cancellation only in that particular parity measurement.

Consequently, a parity check catches odd-weight error patterns and can miss even-weight patterns. A code counters this limitation with additional checks, different check geometry or a decoder that combines all available syndrome information.
Why some systems report 0 or 1 instead of +1 or −1
These are two encodings of the same two-outcome measurement. The eigenvalue notation uses +1 for even and −1 for odd. A classical measurement bit often uses 0 for the +1 result and 1 for the −1 result.
NVIDIA’s CUDA-QX documentation states the operational convention for a ZZ check as follows: it returns 0 when there are no errors or an even number of errors, and 1 when an odd number of errors has occurred. Under that convention, the conversion is:
- +1 eigenvalue → 0 measurement bit
- −1 eigenvalue → 1 measurement bit
Software, hardware and textbooks may choose the opposite bit labeling, so always check the declared convention before interpreting a syndrome. The underlying parity information is unchanged.

Yes, but they measure parity in a different Pauli frame. A Z-type check tests computational-basis bit parity. An X-type check tests the corresponding relation in the X basis, and a check containing Y operators tests a relation involving the Y axis (or a mixed Pauli frame when several types appear).

The words even and odd still refer to the two eigenvalue sectors of the selected operator. They do not always mean an even or odd count of computational-basis 1 bits, because that classical interpretation applies directly only when the operator is diagonal in the computational basis, as a Z-type check is.
| Check type | What its ±1 result represents | Natural interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Z-only product | Eigenvalue of a computational-basis parity constraint | Even or odd number of selected 1 bits, for basis strings |
| X-containing product | Eigenvalue of a constraint in an X-related frame | Parity of the corresponding X-basis information |
| Y-containing product | Eigenvalue of a constraint involving the Y axis | Parity in a Y or mixed Pauli frame |
Why must stabilizer checks commute?
For a code to impose several parity constraints simultaneously, the corresponding operators must be compatible measurements. Pauli products commute when the number of positions at which they contain different nonidentity Pauli operators is even. They anticommute when that number is odd.
Commuting generators can have a shared set of eigenstates, so a code state can satisfy all of their +1 constraints at once. Anticommuting operators cannot generally be assigned definite eigenvalues simultaneously; measuring one can disturb the result of the other. Stabilizer-code design therefore selects a commuting set.
How to read a parity result in practice
- Identify the operator. Write down which qubits it acts on and whether each position contains X, Y, Z or identity.
- Determine the outcome convention. Confirm whether the device or software reports eigenvalues (+1/−1) or bits (0/1), and which value corresponds to the +1 sector.
- Interpret the sector. For a Z-only operator on a basis string, count the selected 1s modulo two. For an X- or Y-containing operator, interpret the result in its associated Pauli frame.
- Compare with the expected stabilizer value. A code-space state normally has the designated eigenvalue, usually +1. A flipped result is a syndrome event, not automatically proof of a particular single-qubit error.
- Combine all checks. Use the complete syndrome, rather than one parity bit, to distinguish likely error locations or to decide that an even-weight pattern may have escaped a particular check.
Common mistakes about even and odd parity
- Parity is not the same as knowing every bit. An even result cannot distinguish 00 from 11, and an odd result cannot distinguish 01 from 10.
- +1 does not mean “no qubit was acted on” in every context. It means the state lies in the +1 eigenspace. An even number of errors can still produce +1 for one check.
- −1 is not a probability. It is an eigenvalue label. Probabilities describe how often the two outcomes occur when the measurement is repeated on identically prepared states.
- An undetected error is not necessarily absent. Even-weight errors can preserve one check’s sign, which is why codes use multiple stabilizers.
- Parity sectors depend on the operator and selected qubits. Changing the checked subset or replacing Z with X or Y changes the question being asked.
- A state can lack definite parity. If it has support in both eigenspaces, the parity measurement projects it into one sector rather than assigning a pre-existing single parity label.
Why even and odd states matter for quantum error correction
Quantum error correction needs information about errors without exposing the logical information stored in a superposition. Parity checks provide exactly that kind of indirect evidence. Stabilizer measurements reveal whether constraints hold, and a set of syndrome bits supplies enough pattern information for a decoder to infer many correctable error locations.
The distinction between even and odd is therefore both mathematical and operational. Mathematically, it labels the two eigenspaces of a parity operator. Operationally, it is the smallest useful syndrome: one bit that says whether a selected constraint was preserved or violated. Building many compatible checks turns those one-bit answers into the syndrome used to protect a logical qubit.
