Palantir Technologies sells enterprise software to government agencies and commercial organizations. Its platforms connect an institution’s data to analysis, decisions and operational workflows, rather than functioning as a consumer app or a simple database. Customers pay under software contracts, usually lasting one to five years, and Palantir generally recognizes the resulting revenue over the contract term.
The company reported $4.5 billion in 2025 revenue, up from $2.9 billion in 2024. Government customers supplied 54% of that revenue and commercial customers 46%, according to Palantir Technologies Inc.’s 2025 Form 10-K.
What Palantir Technologies actually sells
Palantir describes its business plainly in its 2025 Form 10-K: “Our customers pay us to use the software platforms we have built.” Those platforms are designed for organizations with complex, sensitive or constantly changing operations. They help teams combine information from many systems, represent how the organization works, apply rules and analysis, and turn decisions into actions that can be tracked.

Gotham
Gotham supports defense and intelligence missions. Palantir also says it has served disaster-relief organizations. In practical terms, Gotham is positioned as mission software: it brings information and operational context together for teams working on time-sensitive objectives. The filing and company materials describe its intended use; they do not independently establish a particular outcome for every customer.
Foundry
Foundry is Palantir’s foundational data-operations platform. Its capabilities include connecting and managing data, running analytics, developing an Ontology and building workflows. A commercial organization might use those capabilities to give different departments a shared operational view, while a government organization might apply them to a complex program with many data sources and rules.
Apollo
Apollo coordinates delivery of software updates and platform configurations. It is designed to operate across cloud, on-premises and other environments, allowing Palantir software to be maintained where an organization’s data or mission requires it. Apollo is therefore less about a specific business dataset and more about reliably operating the software stack in different deployment conditions.
AIP
AIP, the Artificial Intelligence Platform, connects large language models and other AI capabilities to organizational data and operations. Palantir describes tools for creating AI-backed workflows and agents, alongside controls for security, auditing, evaluation and human review. The 2025 filing says AIP is integrated with offerings such as Foundry, Gotham and Apollo, so it can use the same operational context and deployment controls rather than existing as an isolated chatbot.

How the Ontology fits into the software
Palantir uses the term Ontology for a software architecture that brings an organization’s data, logic and actions into a common representation. It is not simply another name for a database. A database stores records; an Ontology is intended to model the important objects, relationships, rules and permitted actions that make those records meaningful in a particular organization.
For example, an organization could represent assets, locations, work orders, suppliers or mission activities as connected objects. Logic can describe how those objects relate and what rules apply. Actions can then be attached to the model, such as assigning work, changing a status or requesting approval. That structure lets teams build workflows around decisions instead of asking every user to interpret raw tables independently.
The Ontology is a description of Palantir’s architecture, not independent proof that every implementation produces better decisions. The quality of results still depends on the customer’s data, processes, permissions and governance.

How Palantir software turns data into operational work
The platforms are designed to connect a sequence that is often fragmented inside large institutions. A typical implementation can be understood as five linked stages:

- Connect sources. Data from existing systems is brought into the platform. Those sources may be maintained by different departments or run in different technical environments.
- Prepare and govern the data. The organization defines how information is cleaned, related, permissioned and made available to appropriate users. This is where data quality and access controls become practical requirements rather than abstract policies.
- Model the operating context. Using Foundry or related capabilities, teams define the objects, relationships, business logic and actions that matter to their work. This is the Ontology layer.
- Build analysis and workflows. Users create views, analytics, applications or operational processes that help people decide what should happen next. AIP can add model-based assistance or agents, subject to the customer’s controls and review process.
- Deploy and operate. Apollo helps coordinate software versions and configurations across the environments where the customer runs the platform. Results and actions can be monitored, audited and revised as the organization’s needs change.
This sequence explains why Palantir presents its products as more than analytics dashboards. The intended value is a connected path from information to a governed action, with software supporting the steps in between.
How Palantir makes money
Customers pay for access under contracts
Palantir’s revenue comes from contracts that let government and commercial customers use its software platforms. The company generally offers terms of one to five years, although shorter contracts also occur. Many contracts include termination-for-convenience provisions, meaning a customer may have a contractual right to end the agreement under specified conditions.
Palantir’s filing says, “Revenue is generally recognized ratably over the contract term.” In ordinary language, a multiyear contract is not usually recorded as one large sale on the signing date. Instead, the company recognizes revenue over the period in which it provides the contracted software access and services, subject to the accounting terms of the specific agreement.
There is no universal public list price
The reviewed company filings and product materials do not establish a standard per-seat price, a fixed price for each platform or a universal package rate. Enterprise pricing can vary with the customer’s scope, deployment requirements, contract duration and negotiated terms. Any article quoting one “Palantir price” as if it applied to every buyer would overstate what the public information supports.

Why contract duration matters
One-to-five-year agreements can create contracted revenue visibility, but they do not guarantee future growth. Revenue depends on renewals, expansions, new contracts, implementation, customer decisions and the accounting treatment of each arrangement. Termination provisions also mean that a signed contract is not identical to an irrevocable promise to purchase for its full nominal duration.
Palantir’s 2025 revenue and customer mix
The following figures come from Palantir Technologies Inc.’s 2025 Form 10-K and describe the stated periods. They are company-reported historical results, not forecasts.

The 54% government and 46% commercial split shows that Palantir is not solely a government contractor, even though public-sector work remains the larger reported segment. The 74% U.S. share also shows that its revenue is geographically concentrated in the United States. The $93.9 million average for the top twenty customers indicates that a relatively small group of large accounts represents substantial economic activity; it should not be interpreted as the price paid by an ordinary customer or as a forecast of future revenue.
Government and commercial customers use the same architecture differently
Government missions
Government agencies may need to combine intelligence, operational, logistical or emergency-response information while enforcing strict access rules. Gotham is associated with defense and intelligence missions, while the broader platform stack can support data management, workflows, AI controls and software operation in environments selected by the agency. Palantir’s stated disaster-relief use is another example of a mission context, but public materials do not provide a universal template for every agency.

Commercial operations
Commercial customers can use Foundry’s data and workflow capabilities to connect business systems and operational processes. A company may need a shared model of assets, orders, facilities, suppliers or other objects, with permissions and actions defined for different teams. AIP can add AI assistance or agents to those processes when the customer has established suitable security, evaluation and human-review controls.
These are customer-context distinctions, not separate consumer products. Palantir does not publish a complete platform-by-platform revenue breakdown in the cited filing, so the government and commercial percentages should not be treated as sales totals for Gotham, Foundry, Apollo or AIP individually.
Deployment, security and AI controls
Deployment flexibility is a central part of the platform description. Apollo is intended to coordinate updates and configurations across cloud, on-premises and other environments. That matters when an organization cannot place all data in a public cloud, must run systems near an operational edge, or needs different environments for security and availability reasons.
AIP’s advertised controls address a different concern: how AI is used inside an organization. Palantir describes security, audit, evaluation and human review as parts of the platform. Those controls are designed to help an organization know which data an AI system can access, inspect what it did, test its behavior and keep people involved in consequential decisions. Their effectiveness depends on how the customer configures permissions, evaluations and review procedures.
What the public information does not establish
- It does not provide a universal list price or a standard per-user fee.
- It does not break 2025 revenue into separate amounts for Gotham, Foundry, Apollo and AIP.
- It does not prove that product features produce the same business or mission outcomes for every customer.
- It does not make the 2025 revenue increase a guarantee of future growth.
- It does not mean every customer has the same contract length, termination rights or deployment configuration.
Product descriptions explain intended capabilities. Actual implementations can differ by customer, contract, data environment and regulatory requirements, and features or availability can change over time.
How to interpret Palantir’s business model in one view
Palantir is best understood as a contract-based enterprise software company selling an integrated operating layer for data-intensive organizations. Gotham addresses mission work, Foundry addresses data operations and workflow development, Apollo addresses software delivery across environments, and AIP adds governed AI capabilities. The Ontology is the architectural idea that connects data, logic and actions into an organization-specific model.
The company earns money when government agencies and commercial organizations sign contracts to use those platforms. Most contracts run for one to five years, revenue is generally recognized over time, and pricing is negotiated rather than published as a universal menu. Its 2025 results show a $4.5 billion business split between government and commercial customers, with most revenue coming from U.S. customers.
