Open source describes the license and rights attached to an app’s code; it does not automatically describe the AI model, training data, cloud service, plugins, privacy defaults, or security. Under the Open Source Initiative (OSI) definition, source must be available in a form developers can modify, and the license must allow derived works and redistribution without discrimination. Merely being able to read a repository is not enough.

For an AI note app, evaluate four separate layers: the app license, the AI model and provider, the movement and storage of your notes, and the security evidence for the specific release and configuration. Keeping those layers separate prevents the most common mistake—treating “open source” as a guarantee of private, secure, local AI.

What “open source” actually means

The Open Source Initiative says, “Open source doesn’t just mean access to the source code.” Its Open Source Definition evaluates the software’s distribution license. Among its criteria, the source code must be available in a form developers can modify; the license must permit derived works; and redistribution cannot be restricted by a person, group, or field of use. OSI’s definition page was last modified February 16, 2024.

That distinction matters because an online repository, a public source archive, or a “view source” link does not by itself grant legal permission to change and redistribute the software. Read the license that covers the app, then check whether it covers all of the components you care about. A note app may combine separately licensed libraries, plugins, mobile clients, desktop clients, and hosted services.

Source visibility versus license rights

Source visibility answers, “Can I inspect this code?” An open-source license answers additional questions: “Can I modify it, build a derived version, and redistribute that version under the license’s conditions?” If the license withholds those rights, the app may be source-available or proprietary even when its code is easy to download.

License scope is part of the answer

Look for separate terms for the core app, bundled dependencies, plugins, synchronization servers, web clients, and documentation. A license applying to a desktop client does not automatically apply to a company’s hosted synchronization service or to an AI provider connected through an integration.

Open app code does not make the AI open

An AI note app usually combines at least two software products: the note-taking application and an AI system that summarizes, searches, transcribes, or generates text. The app’s license does not tell you whether the model is open, what data trained it, whether its weights are available, or which terms govern a remote API.

Check the model separately

For each AI feature, identify the model, its license, where it runs, and who operates it. A model may run on your computer, on a server you control, or on a provider’s infrastructure. Training data and model weights can have terms that differ from the note app’s source license. A plugin can also add a provider or data path that is absent from the core application.

Provider choice changes the data path

Joplin’s September 14, 2026 explanation provides a concrete example, not a universal rule. Joplin says its AI features are disabled by default; the user enables them and chooses a provider. It documents connections to local models such as Ollama or LM Studio, where notes remain on the device or private network, and cloud providers, where the relevant request data goes to the selected provider. For AI Chat, Joplin says the request includes the content needed for that action—for example, an open note or selected text—rather than automatically sending the whole notebook. The details are in Joplin’s AI privacy explanation.

Do not transfer that behavior to another app without checking its own documentation. “Local model,” “cloud model,” and “AI enabled” are not interchangeable labels. Confirm which provider is selected, which permissions the feature has, and whether prompts include the current note, linked notes, attachments, metadata, or an entire workspace.

Why open source is not a privacy guarantee

Privacy depends on data flows and defaults, not only on the license. Before enabling an AI feature, answer these questions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Where are notes stored when the app is not syncing?
  • What does synchronization upload, and which company operates the endpoint?
  • What exact text, attachments, metadata, or history does an AI request transmit?
  • Are backups, telemetry, crash reports, voice typing, optical character recognition (OCR), or handwriting recognition separate transfers?
  • Is encryption end to end, who holds the keys, and can the provider decrypt content?
  • Can plugins or integrations read all notes, or only the note you explicitly open?

Joplin describes itself as offline first and says notes can be synchronized with end-to-end encryption through supported services. Its privacy policy says synchronization is disabled by default; if you choose a third-party provider such as OneDrive, notes are sent to that provider and that provider’s privacy policy applies. The policy also lists feature-specific network behavior, including auto-update checks, geolocation, voice-typing model downloads, OCR downloads, crash reports, and handwriting-recognition uploads. Defaults and controls differ by feature, which is why the app’s license cannot substitute for reading its privacy settings.

Local storage still needs a threat model

“Stored locally” limits one category of exposure but does not make a device invulnerable. Malware, another user account, an unlocked computer, an untrusted plugin, or an unencrypted backup can still expose notes. Local AI also consumes processor, memory, and disk resources and may create model caches or logs. Treat local execution as one privacy choice, not as a complete security architecture.

Why open source is not a security certification

Public code can improve review and make independent auditing possible, but it does not prove that every release is secure. Security depends on implementation quality, dependency updates, signing and update controls, plugin permissions, server configuration, and how you configure synchronization and AI providers.

Security disclosures are useful only when you check their scope and date. Obsidian’s security page reports a December 2024 Cure53 audit of its desktop and mobile clients and a December 2025 Trail of Bits audit of the Sync API, server, and cryptography. Those are vendor-reported audit disclosures for named components and dates; they are not a timeless guarantee about every release, plugin, integration, or user setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use an audit as evidence about what was examined, by whom, and when. Ask whether the audit covered the client you run, the synchronization service you use, and the cryptographic paths that protect your notes. A clean result cannot establish that an unrelated plugin or a later version is safe.

Free, local, and open source are different claims

Pricing and storage location are independent of licensing. Obsidian’s license overview says the app is free for personal and commercial use, while also stating that the company owns the app’s text, images, and code. Its terms describe the software as licensed rather than sold and restrict modification and source-code discovery, subject to stated exceptions. The same overview says data is local by default and distinguishes optional Sync and Publish services.

This combination—free use and local files—does not make an app open source. Conversely, an open-source app can offer an optional hosted service with separate commercial terms and separate data handling. Evaluate the app license, storage defaults, and hosted services as three different questions.

Compare AI note apps on separate axes

A single “open” or “private” score hides important differences. Use a side-by-side checklist such as this one, filling it from the current documentation for the version and region you use.

Axis What to verify Documented example
License scope and rights Which source components are covered, and does the license permit modification and redistribution? OSI’s criteria require modifiable source, derived works, and non-discriminatory redistribution: OSI definition.
AI model and provider Can the feature use a local model, a remote provider, or both? What terms govern the model? Joplin documents user-selected local providers such as Ollama or LM Studio and cloud-provider choices: Joplin AI privacy.
Data flow What note text, attachments, metadata, or history leaves the device for AI, sync, telemetry, or plugins? Joplin says AI Chat sends content needed for the request, such as an open note or selected text, and that AI is disabled by default: Joplin AI privacy.
Storage and synchronization Are files local by default, is sync optional, and who operates the endpoint? What encryption is documented? Joplin describes offline-first use and optional encrypted synchronization; its privacy policy says synchronization is disabled by default: Joplin overview and privacy policy.
Security evidence Which components and versions were audited, on what date, and by which firm? Obsidian lists December 2024 Cure53 client audits and a December 2025 Trail of Bits Sync audit: Obsidian security.
Portability Can you export notes to ordinary formats and move them without a proprietary service? Joplin documents Markdown notes plus import and export paths: Joplin overview. Portability is useful but is not proof of open-source licensing.

  1. Read the license. Locate the license for the app code and confirm rights to modify and redistribute. Record any separate terms for clients, plugins, or servers.
  2. Inventory every AI feature. List chat, summaries, semantic search, transcription, OCR, handwriting recognition, and automations. Treat each as a possible data path.
  3. Identify the provider. Note the model name, whether execution is local or remote, the provider’s retention and training terms, and whether you can change providers.
  4. Inspect defaults before entering sensitive text. Check AI enablement, synchronization, telemetry, crash reporting, location, backups, and plugin permissions. Disable features you do not need.
  5. Trace one request. With a test note, determine exactly what is transmitted for a single AI action. Check application logs or the vendor’s documentation, and distinguish selected text from an entire notebook.
  6. Check encryption and key custody. Determine whether encryption is end to end, where keys are generated and stored, and whether a synchronization provider can read note contents.
  7. Review security evidence. Prefer dated audits or advisories that name the tested component, version, methodology, and auditor. Do not extend a result beyond that scope.
  8. Test export and recovery. Export a representative notebook, verify attachments and links, and confirm you can restore it without the original hosted service.
  9. Recheck after updates. Providers, defaults, plugins, and policies can change. Revisit the license, privacy policy, and AI settings after major releases.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

“The repository is public, so it is open source.”

Public visibility is not a license. Verify the rights granted by the actual license and its scope.

“The app is open, so the model is open.”

Model weights, training material, and an inference API can have different owners and terms. Identify them separately.

“Offline first means nothing ever leaves the device.”

Optional synchronization, AI providers, update checks, OCR downloads, crash reports, and plugins can create network traffic. Read feature-specific disclosures and settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“End-to-end encryption solves every privacy problem.”

Encryption may protect synchronized note content while leaving AI prompts, telemetry, metadata, or provider-side processing governed by different controls. Map each transfer independently.

“An audit proves the app is secure.”

An audit is evidence about a defined scope and date. It does not certify every release, extension, server, or configuration.

The decision a reader can make

Choose an app as “open source” only after confirming the license grants the rights you need. Then make a separate decision about AI: local or cloud, which provider, what content is sent, and under what retention terms. Finally, assess storage, synchronization, encryption, plugins, portability, and dated security evidence. This layered approach lets you benefit from inspectable code without assuming guarantees that the license never made.
