“No AI” is a product-specific claim, not a standard privacy or security guarantee. It may mean that certain generative features are turned off, that a product does not include large language models (LLMs) by default, or simply that using optional AI is up to you. It does not, by itself, tell you whether the software collects telemetry, syncs data to the cloud, or sends information to other services. Check exactly what the vendor means, which features are covered, and what data continues to be processed.
What “no AI” can—and cannot—mean
Software companies do not use one universal definition of “AI-free.” The label might refer to generative AI or LLM features, while narrower machine-learning (ML) functions remain. It might describe a dedicated mode that disables named features, rather than a product with no AI-related technology anywhere in it.
These terms are not interchangeable. A generative feature produces or transforms content; an LLM is one kind of model that can power such features; ML also includes more constrained tools designed for a specific task. Waterfox, for example, distinguishes general-purpose LLMs from single-purpose ML functions in its LLM Usage Memorandum and related interview. Its memorandum says LLM features are not included by default, while users may choose external services through extensions or their own setup.

So, “no AI” may describe a particular feature boundary or user choice—not the complete technology stack. Look for the product’s definition and covered feature list rather than assuming the label means no ML, no external services, or no data processing.

What it means for privacy and security
Turning off AI does not establish that data stays on your device
An AI control tells you about AI feature availability only to the extent the vendor defines it. It does not establish that sync, cloud storage, analytics, crash reporting, or other processing is disabled. Those data flows need to be checked separately.
Training, retention, and deletion are different questions
A promise not to use customer content to train models does not, on its own, explain whether the content is transmitted to a provider, how long it is retained, who can access it, or how deletion works. Check each commitment separately, along with the plan or account terms that apply.

A policy is not an independent security audit
Vendor documentation can describe safeguards and contractual commitments, but it should be read as the company’s statement about its service. Check whether the stated controls apply to your product tier and whether relevant independent attestations or contractual terms are available. An AI-free label alone does not establish that software is safer.

How to evaluate a “no AI” claim
- Find the definition and feature scope. Does “AI” mean LLMs, generative tools, or all ML? Which named features are disabled, and which remain?
- Check the default and who controls it. Is AI absent, off by default, opt-in, or merely avoidable by not using a feature? Can an individual change the setting, or does an account administrator control it? Is the choice available on your plan?
- Trace the data flow. For each AI feature you might use, identify what content is sent, when it is sent, and whether the recipient is the software vendor or a third-party provider.
- Read the training, retention, and deletion terms. Look for separate answers about model training, storage duration, access, and deletion—not just a general privacy statement.
- Review non-AI processing separately. Check the controls for telemetry, analytics, sync, crash reports, and cloud features. Do not assume an AI-off setting changes them.
- Confirm what still works and whether the choice is reversible. Find out which parts of the core product remain usable, whether AI can be enabled later, and whether you can use your own provider or extensions.
Examples of different “no AI” arrangements

Questions to ask before relying on the label
- Which exact AI or ML features does the claim cover, and what remains enabled?
- Does any feature send my content to the vendor or another provider? When, and for what purpose?
- Are inputs or outputs used for training, retained, or accessible to staff? How can they be deleted?
- Are telemetry, analytics, sync, and cloud storage controlled separately?
- Does the setting apply to my plan, account, and device, and who can change it?
- What still works when AI is off, and can I use a provider or extension of my own?
If the distinction affects a privacy or security decision, ask the vendor which features and data flows its “no AI” promise covers. Then compare that answer with the product’s current privacy policy and account settings.
